DESCRIPTION:Making Armenian Americans \nCurators: Michael Pifer (U-M| MES) and Kathryn Babayan (U-M|History)\nProject Save Photograph Archive/Archive Alive Project\n\nMaking Armenian Americans invites viewers into a moment of possibility in the early 20th century\, when Armenians fleeing violence at the end of the Ottoman Empire came to reinvent themselves in the promise of America. Drawn from the archives of Project Save\, these photographs capture different valences of American life\, as experienced\, performed\, and imagined by Armenian immigrants. From naturalization classes to festivals of nations\, from breaking new ground for churches to mundane tableaus of Thanksgiving and Christmas\, this range of photographs offers a glimpse of a community in the making\, one that sought to preserve a memory of its Ottoman past even while anticipating an American future.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Lynn Galbreath Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lynn Galbreath\, a Detroit based artist who grew up in Argentina\, is a former recipient of the Creative Artists’ Grant from the Arts Foundation of Michigan and the Michigan Individual Artist Grant from Michigan Council For The Arts. Galbreath’s work has been showcased locally\, nationally and internationally in over 20 solo/two person and over 100 group exhibitions.\n\nGalbreath has an M.F.A. from the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art\, Art History\, & Design\, Wayne State University\, Detroit\, MI\; and a B.F.A. with Permanent K-12 Certification from The Gwen Frostic School of Art\, Western MI University\, Kalamazoo\, MI. Galbreath has chaperoned eleven intensive\, immersive art experiences to Italy\, Spain\, France\, Belgium\, England\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, Austria\, and the Czech Republic. Lynn is a retired Adjunct Associate Professor of Studio Art from Oakland University\, where she has been on the faculty of the Department of Art & Art History since 2000. Lynn has also instructed studio art and design at the College For Creative Studies\, University of Detroit Mercy — School of Architecture\, Macomb Community College\, Wayne State University\, and Bloomfield University School. Her work can be seen in the collections of Oakland University\, Wayne State University\, Detroit Receiving Hospital\, Children’s Hospital of Michigan\, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and numerous private collections.\n\nThis exhibition consists of works from a variety of series created by Galbreath over the years: Telegraph\, Storyboard\, and Working Hard for a Living. Each series represents a unique exploration of themes\, techniques\, and social commentaries that reflect Galbreath’s artistic journey and concerns for the world.\n\nTelegraph explores the aesthetic visual weights and balances between harmony and content\, diving deep into how visual elements can convey messages and emotions. This series invites viewers to reflect on the way art communicates through its formal qualities\, as well as its narrative possibilities. The careful interplay of shapes\, colors\, and textures in these works prompts an examination of the viewer's perception and emotional response. By utilizing abstract forms\, Galbreath encourages an engagement that goes beyond mere observation\, seeking to provoke thought about how aesthetic choices influence understanding and meaning.\n\nOn the other hand\, Storyboard is a series of image-driven installation paintings that vary greatly in size\, showcasing Galbreath’s versatility and creative ingenuity. The titles of the works draw inspiration from the years spent creating visuals for TV commercials and public service announcements\, illustrating how commercial art often intertwines with societal messages. This series emphasizes the profound impact visual narratives have on consumer culture and public perception\, underscoring the artist's belief in the potency of imagery to shape narratives. The installations weave a complex fabric of storytelling that challenges viewers to reconsider their relationship with media and the messages they consume daily.\n\nWorking Hard for a Living pays tribute to our sustainable and unsustainable resources\, shedding light on the individuals who toil diligently within these economic frameworks. This series highlights the hard-working suppliers of essential products\, including Farm Market Managers\, Fishmongers\, and Beach Vendors. By portraying these self-employed individuals\, often operating within informal economies\, Galbreath draws attention to the unique challenges they face. These individuals frequently contend with low\, inconsistent incomes\, long hours\, and sometimes exploitative conditions\, fostering a sense of solidarity with those who labor under such circumstances.\n\nFurthermore\, the series invites viewers to confront the broader societal structures that contribute to these inequities. Galbreath's work serves not only as a tribute but also as a call to action to consider how our consumer habits and economic policies affect the livelihoods of others. The layered narratives present in this series open a dialogue about the value we place on labor and the often unseen struggles that support our day-to-day lives. Through these explorations\, Galbreath establishes a multifaceted narrative that intertwines art with activism\, compelling audiences to engage both aesthetically and ethically with the realities depicted in the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World
DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. It was curated by Abigail Staub\, PhD Candidate\, Interdepartmental Program in Mediterranean Art & Archaeology.\n\nAnna Bonnell Freidin\, U-M associate professor of history\, will talk about \"Healing the Womb: Uterine Amulets in the Roman World\" (https://events.umich.edu/event/142418) on January 16.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Terence Swafford Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition showcases a decade of artist Terry Swafford’s work in Detroit\, marking the culmination of years spent composing scenes from the untamed edges of urban communities. These paintings serve as a visual record of Detroit’s transformation\, capturing humanity’s impact on the environment alongside nature’s persistent efforts to reclaim these spaces. As the city continues to change\, many of these depicted scenes are vanishing\, no longer visible in the landscape today. The significance of this documentation goes beyond mere nostalgia\; it invites viewers to reflect on the dynamic interplay between urban development and ecological restoration\, prompting a deeper understanding of how cities evolve while retaining traces of their history.\n\nSwafford’s paintings are created on location and in one session. The natural conditions\, including light\, shadow\, and atmosphere\, change dramatically from hour to hour and day to day\, forcing the artist to respond quickly and decisively. This approach\, born of a direct engagement with the subject and the fleeting nature of the scene\, along with his wet-on-wet technique\, keeps the work fresh and immediate. By immersing himself in the environment\, Swafford captures the diverse textures and vibrant colors that characterize Detroit’s landscape\, imbuing his work with a sense of urgency and spontaneity. Each brushstroke conveys a commitment not only to visual accuracy but also to emotional resonance\, as he strives to encapsulate the spirit of a place that is both loved and contested.\n\nIn addition to these works\, the artist constantly sketches ideas both for paintings and for designing projects in his business. These sketches serve as visual language\, helping him clarify and refine his concepts before bringing them to life. They become a means to communicate ideas to clients and his crew and become an extension of his voice—an academic exercise rooted in artistic practice that fosters collaboration and innovation. The act of sketching also reflects his evolving relationship with the city\, as each drawing encapsulates fleeting moments of inspiration drawn directly from his surroundings. This duality of function—creating art for exhibition and conceptualizing designs for projects—demonstrates Swafford’s versatility and adaptability as an artist.\n\nSwafford received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design\, and while at RISD\, he was part of the European Honors Program. His education not only honed his technical skills but also broadened his artistic perspective through exposure to varied artistic traditions. He has shown his work in both solo and group exhibitions in Chicago\, Kansas City\, and New York State. Each exhibition serves as a testament to his commitment to his craft and his ability to engage diverse audiences\, offering them an opportunity to explore the complex narratives woven into each landscape.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Tukilile Vaa
DESCRIPTION:Kaloki Nyamai is a multidisciplinary artist based in Nairobi. His practice explores Kenya's histories and collective memory\, blending Kamba traditions with contemporary narratives. Using acrylic paint\, rope\, photo transfers\, and stitched yarn\, his free-hanging immersive works blur the boundaries between painting\, sculpture\, and installation. For his U-M project\, Nyamai will present one large unstretched piece and two framed paintings at the Institute for the Humanities\, as well as a second free-hanging work at the U-M Museum of Art.\n\nThe physicality of his complex constructions inspire wonder in the viewer. The works are vast in scale\, embedded with stories\, where past and future merge both poetically and conceptually. In each composition\, the artist proposes a powerful alternative to the flatness of singular narratives of Kenyan history and identity presented as the definitive postcolonial account. He likens the formal act of stitching to symbolically unifying a wounded or fractured community.\n\nNyamai founded the Kamene Cultural & Research Center in Nairobi\, a creative and collaborative hub dedicated to the preservation\, promotion\, and innovation of African cultural practices.\n\nAbout the artist:\nKaloki Nyamai (*1985 in Kitui\, Kenya) is a multidisciplinary artist working with installation\, painting\, and sculpture based in Nairobi. From an early age\, his mother introduced him to painting and taught him to draw\, fostering an ever-lasting interest in art throughout his life. He often finds inspiration in his grandmother’s stories of the Kamba people\, a Bantu ethnic group of eastern Kenya. Using materials like acrylic paint\, sisal rope\, photo transfers\, and stitched yarn\, Nyamai’s free-hanging pieces evoke the healing of historical wounds and a collective yearning for renewal. His works blur the boundaries between painting\, sculpture\, and installation\, creating cohesive\, immersive experiences where past\, present\, and future converge poetically.\n\nNyamai studied Interior Design at the Buruburu Institute Of Fine Arts (BIFA) and then pursued painting after working in other creative fields. His large-scale paintings and mixed-media installations intricately explore historical narratives\, examining their resonance in the present. Nyamai has shown his work across the globe in solo exhibitions at the Norval Foundation\, Cape Town (2024)\; James Cohan Gallery\, New York (2024)\; Galerie Barbara Thumm\, Berlin (2023 and 2022)\; SEPTIEME Gallery\, Paris (2019)\, and other venues. In 2023\, he featured part of his series Dining in Chaos in the “Unlimited” section at Art Basel in Basel. He has participated in group exhibitions and biennials\, most recently at the Sharjah Biennial 16\, Sharjah (2025)\; The Völklinger Hütte\, Völklingen (2024)\; the Kenyan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale\, Venice (2022)\; and the Dakar Biennale (2022). His works are part of numerous private and institutional collections around the world\, such as the Dallas Art Museum\, the Southern African Foundation for Contemporary Art\, and the Arthur Primas Museum.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Wealth Taxation and Portfolio Allocation”
DESCRIPTION:Join the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host Ségal Le Guern Herry\, Assistant Professor at the Aix-Marseille School of Economics and senior economist at the EU Tax Observatory. He is a visiting researcher at UC Berkeley during Spring 2026. Ségal will present\, “Wealth Taxation and Portfolio Allocation.”\n\nAbstract: “Should governments tax different assets at different rates? The answer depends crucially on the cross-elasticities between asset classes\, of which few estimates exist. This paper estimates the cross-elasticity between the two main components of household wealth: financial and real estate assets. In 2017\, France transformed its wealth tax into a real estate tax\, thereby eliminating wealth taxation on financial assets. Using comprehensive linked administrative income and wealth data from France\, I study the effect of this unique reform by contrasting the responses of French residents to non-residents\, who remained subject to the wealth tax but were unaffected by the reform. Five years after the reform\, French taxpayers have reallocated on average 5% of their real estate holdings toward financial assets. These responses translate into a quite modest cross-elasticity: a one percentage point differential increase in the tax rate on real estate causes taxpayers to reallocate 4.7% of their real estate assets to financial assets. This reallocation is driven by reduced ownership in investment properties rather than owner-occupied housing\, and coincides with a surge in dividend incomes. Overall\, I estimate that behavioral responses account for approximately 7% of the revenue loss due the reform\, indicating that the mechanical impact dominates. These findings have two key implications. First\, from an equity perspective\, exempting financial assets from wealth taxation primarily served as a tax cut for wealthy households in France. Second\, the efficiency cost of taxing real estate more heavily than other assets appears limited.”

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A Theory of Endogenous Degrowth and Environmental Sustainability (with Philippe Aghion\, Timo Boppart\, Michael Peters\, and Matthew Schwartzman)
DESCRIPTION:We develop and quantify a novel growth theory in which economic activity endogenously shifts from material production to quality improvements. Consumers derive utility from goods with differing environmental footprints: necessities are material-intensive and polluting\, while luxuries are more service-based and emit less. Innovation can be directed toward either material productivity or product~quality. Because demand for luxuries is more sensitive to quality\, the economy gradually becomes “weightless”: growth is driven by quality improvements\, services become the dominant employment sector\, and material production stabilizes at a finite level. This structural transformation enables rising living standards with declining environmental intensity\, providing an endogenous path to degrowth in material output without compromising economic progress. Policy can accelerate the transition\, but its burden is uneven\, falling more heavily on the poor than on the rich.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Seminar Series - Speakers: Abbey Soule and Patricia Torres Pineda
DESCRIPTION:Speaker 1: Abbey Soule\, PhD Candidate\, Weber Lab\n\nTitle: Beyond Science Communication: Why Engaging with 'Non-Traditional' Audiences Makes Great Scientists\n\nDescription: Public engagement and outreach activities help scientists strengthen their communication skills while (ideally) improving public understanding of and trust in the research process. Science communication is considered an important part of professional development\, yet the opportunities for engaging in outreach activities often favor certain venues (e.g.\, museums) and audiences (e.g.\, K-12). As a result\, public reach is biased towards more mobile and/or affluent communities with easier access to engagement opportunities\, leaving many populations out of the conversation entirely. In my talk\, I will share my experiences participating in and organizing outreach efforts aimed at bringing underrepresented\, 'non-traditional' audiences into scientific conversations including scientist and audience testimonials as well as the logistical challenges of working in certain venues.\n----------\nSpeaker 2: Patricia Torres Pineda\, PhD candidate\nMuseo Nacional de Historia Natural \"Prof. Eugenio de Jesús Marcano\"\, Santo Domingo\, R.D\n\nTitle: The colonial legacies of natural history collections: specimens from the Caribbean as a case study\n\nDescription: It has been estimated that at least 1.1 billion zoological specimens are housed in natural history museums and collections around the world. These specimens comprise the foundation of a plethora of biological and environmental research\, including studies on wildlife biology\, ecology\, and conservation\, habitat restoration\, predictive investigations related to climate change and public health\, as well as education and public engagement. In the last decades\, museum and collections professionals have started important conversations regarding the colonial legacies that have shaped and\, in many cases\, still inform the practices\, access\, and use (or lack thereof) of collections. Regrettably\, these debates are still not as prevalent in the field of natural history collections and museums. Despite the Caribbean being one of the top Biodiversity hotspots of the planet (geographic areas that concentrate a large number of unique species)\, this diversity is not being fairly represented in Caribbean-based museums and collections. Here\, I present preliminary results of an exploratory study on the geopolitical distribution patterns of zoological natural history specimens from the Caribbean in collections around the world\, where striking disparities in quantity and quality of collections housed locally\, in comparison with those in Global North institutions\, become evident. In order to address the causes and implications of these biases and open a dialogue that moves us towards more inclusive and fairer practices in zoological collecting and curating\, we must understand the extent and magnitude of the disparities.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Elliot S. Valenstein Distinguished Lecture | Thinking and Doing
DESCRIPTION:The brain has the remarkable ability to self-generate meaningful and distributed activity patterns (“thoughts”). Thoughts make it possible to simulate possible futures and alternative pasts\, and to use those simulations to inform choices. Here we focus on two key features of thoughts. First\, thoughts can be controlled: subjects can typically decide what to think about and then generate related mental representations. Second\, thoughts are behaviorally accessible: subjects can act based on their representational content. The neural activity patterns that underlie thoughts are poorly understood\, but we do know that there are specific activity patterns in the brain that are consistent with mental simulations. These include non-local spatial representations in the hippocampus that are consistent with possible futures and alternative pasts. Whether these representations are controllable and accessible remains unclear. We therefore developed two tasks that where we delivered real-time feedback contingent on the decoded content of non-local hippocampal representations. These tasks allowed us to determine 1) whether animals can control the content of non-local hippocampal representations and 2) whether they can access that content to guide an upcoming choice. If you are interested in knowing what we found\, please come to the talk.\n\nAbout the speaker: Loren Frank is Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and a Professor in the Department of Physiology at the University of California\, San Francisco (UCSF). He received his B.A. in Psychology and Cognitive studies from Carleton College\, his Ph.D. in Systems Neuroscience and Computation from M.I.T. and did post-doctoral research at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University. His laboratory uses a combination of techniques to study the neural bases of learning\, memory and decision-making. is work focuses on the hippocampus and related structures\, brain areas critical for both forming and retrieving memories for the events of daily life and for generating representations of possibilities that go beyond immediate experience. He also works in close collaboration with colleagues from multiple institutions to develop new technologies to understand how the brain works and how to fix it when it is not working properly. These technologies include flexible polymer electrodes that make it possible to record from large numbers of neurons for months at a time and real-time feedback systems that enable manipulations of specific patterns of brain activity. Dr. Frank has received numerous awards for his scientific discoveries and his mentoring\, including fellowships from the Sloan\, McKnight and Merck Foundations as well as the Society for Neuroscience Young Investigator Award\, the University of Indiana Gill Young Investigator Award\, the UCSF Faculty Mentoring Award\, and the College Mentors for Kids Inspire Award.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Commutative Algebra: Openness of the Splinter Locus in Positive Characteristic
DESCRIPTION:A splinter is a ring R for which all finite ring extensions R -> S split as a map of R-modules. While this is a characteristic free property\, it exhibits wildly different behavior in various characteristics. In this talk\, we prove that under mild hypotheses\, the locus of primes p in R with the local ring R_p a splinter is Zariski-open. In particular\, we define a splinter test ideal\, and show that this construction behaves well under localization to conclude that the vanishing set of this ideal is exactly the non-splinter locus.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Bartell Lecture \"Chelator Design Strategies and Applications for Biology and Critical Minerals\"
DESCRIPTION:Metal ions are essential both in biological systems\, where they function as nutrients and therapeutic agents\, and in the global economy\, where they enable advanced technologies. Purposefully designed chelators bridge these domains by enhancing the biological performance of metal ions and by enabling the enrichment\, isolation\, and separation of technologically critical metals. This presentation highlights our group’s recent efforts in chelator design for these two areas. In the first part\, we survey how expanded macrocyclic chelators can be engineered for nuclear medicine. Our studies show that introducing controlled flexibility into these ligands allows them to adjust their binding conformations to accommodate metal ions of varying sizes\, increasing their versatility for radiometal-based applications. The second part focuses on applying this chelator class to the extraction and separation of rare earth elements\, critical minerals central to modern technologies. We demonstrate how rationally tailored chelators can selectively remove and enrich rare earths from complex matrices and enable efficient interelement separations. Together\, these studies illustrate how fundamental principles of coordination chemistry can be leveraged to meet distinct challenges in nuclear medicine and critical mineral processing.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium: Automorphic representations and optimal quantum logic gates
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will describe a surprising connection between the Langlands program and designing efficient architectures for quantum computing. Constructions of quantum computers require finding finite sets of 2^n-by-2^n unitary matrices that efficiently and computably approximate arbitrary unitary matrices through short products. Extending ideas first used in Lubotzky-Phillips-Sarnak's construction of expander graphs\, such an \"optimal covering\" property can be translated into a bound in the theory of automorphic representations. I will explain this translation and then broadly sketch how recent progress in automorphic theory and the Langlands program can be applied to prove the resulting bound in the cases most relevant to quantum computing.

How does art furnish humanity with the means to mourn\, mitigate\, overcome\, and bring solace and healing to the world’s deep antagonisms and conflicts?\n\nIn this lecture\, Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires Director Victoria Noorthoorn will describe the values-driven transformation of this vibrant museum of modern and contemporary art in Buenos Aires throughout her leadership over the past 12 years. Noorthoorn has persistently worked towards creating a new model for a public museum in Argentina – and in doing so\, she has created a new museum model – that positions art and artists as drivers of educational\, social\, economic\, and civic development.

SUMMARY:Performance:Jake Xerxes Fussell
DESCRIPTION:“…maybe the leading interpreter of American folk music right now.” –Ann Powers\, NPR\n\nReared in Georgia and now settled in North Carolina\, Jake Xerxes Fussell has established himself as a devoted listener and contemplative interpreter of a vast array of so-called folk songs\, lovingly sourced from a personal store of favorites. On his latest album\, When I’m Called—his first LP for Fat Possum\, and his first as a parent—Fussell returns to a well of music that holds lifelong sentimental meaning\, loosely contemplating the passage of time and the procession of life’s unexpected offerings.\n\nThe album was produced by James Elkington and mixed by Tucker Martine. In addition to Elkington\, it features the playing of Ben Whiteley (The Weather Station)\, Joe Westerlund (Bon Iver\, Califone)\, and others. Blake Mills contributes guitars on several tracks. Joan Shelley and Robin Holcomb provide backing vocals.\n\n“…Fussell is the rare contemporary to approach folk in its pure form\, shunning self-penned compositions about bummer relationships to concentrate on material handed down from bygone\, hardened times.” – The New Yorker\n\n“(Fussell) is one of the great magpies of American song\, collecting forgotten\, tarnished gems with a folklorist’s zeal… his renditions aren’t so much cover versions as composites…” – The Guardian

Kleiman\, M.D.\, recounts the profound career moments that define the doctor-patient partnership\, illuminating the path toward preventing physician burnout. \n\nHOW DO I GET THE BOOK?\n\nBook copies are available on Amazon for $10\, in both paperback and Kindle versions (and free for students with Kindle Unlimited).  If you need financial assistance purchasing the book\, complete this GoogleForm (myumi.ch/z98zn) by Tuesday\, February 17 to have a copy provided for you. \n\nWHAT CAN I EXPECT AT THE BOOK DISCUSSION EVENT?\n\nA virtual Book Discussion will be held on Wednesday\, March 11 from 5 - 6 PM with the author\, Jay H. Kleiman\, M.D.\, and his wife\, Georgi.  This will provide you the opportunity to directly engage with the author and his spouse to learn from their lived experiences.  A set of discussion prompts and questions is available to view in advance\; however\, live questions from participants are highly encouraged.

SUMMARY:Performance:Leo Kottke
DESCRIPTION:\"an American legend in the guitar world\" –Los Angeles Times \n\nAcoustic guitarist Leo Kottke was born in Athens\, Georgia\, but left town after a year and a half. Raised in 12 different states\, he absorbed a variety of musical influences as a child\, flirting with both violin and trombone\, before abandoning Stravinsky for the guitar at age 11. After adding a love for the country-blues of Mississippi John Hurt to the music of John Phillip Sousa and Preston Epps\, Kottke joined the Navy underage\, to be underwater\, and eventually lost some hearing shooting at lightbulbs in the Atlantic while serving on the USS Halfbeak\, a diesel submarine. \n\nKottke had previously entered college at the U of Missouri\, dropping out after a year to hitchhike across the country to South Carolina\, then to New London and into the Navy\, with his twelve string. \"The trip was not something I enjoyed\,\" he has said\, \"I was broke and met too many interesting people.\" Discharged in 1964\, he settled in the Twin Cities area and became a fixture at Minneapolis' Scholar Coffeehouse\, which had been home to Bob Dylan and John Koerner. He issued his 1968 recording debut LP Twelve String Blues\, recorded on a Viking quarter-inch tape recorder\, for the Scholar's tiny Oblivion label. (The label released one other LP by The Langston Hughes Memorial Eclectic Jazz Band.) \n\nAfter sending tapes to guitarist John Fahey\, Kottke was signed to Fahey's Takoma label\, releasing what has come to be called the Armadillo record. Fahey and his manager Denny Bruce soon secured a production deal for Kottke with Capitol Records. \n\nKottke's 1971 major-label debut\, \"Mudlark\,\" positioned him somewhat uneasily in the singer/songwriter vein\, despite his own wishes to remain an instrumental performer. Still\, despite arguments with label heads as well as with Bruce\, Kottke flourished during his tenure on Capitol\, as records like 1972's \"Greenhouse\" and 1973's live \"My Feet Are Smiling\" and \"Ice Water\" found him branching out with guest musicians and honing his guitar technique. \n\nHis collaboration with Phish bassist Mike Gordon\, \"Clone\,\" caught audiences' attention in 2002. Kottke and Gordon followed with a recording in the Bahamas called \"Sixty Six Steps\,\" produced by Leo's old friend and Prince producer David Z. \n\nKottke has been awarded two Grammy nominations\; a Doctorate in Music Performance by the Peck School of Music at the U of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee\; and a Certificate of Significant Achievement in Not Playing the Trombone from the U of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College.
