For Black women in particular, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination, social justice, and survival. Thus, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the \u2018crown\u2019: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer\u201d started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. \u201cRedefining the Crown\u201d then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman, Tanisha Kennedy, Felecia McDaniel, Shantell Elaine McCoy, Tamara Lynn Myles, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. Galbreath has chaperoned eleven intensive, immersive art experiences to Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, and the Czech Republic. Lynn is a retired Adjunct Associate Professor of Studio Art from Oakland University, where she has been on the faculty of the Department of Art & Art History since 2000. Lynn has also instructed studio art and design at the College For Creative Studies, University of Detroit Mercy \u2014 School of Architecture, Macomb Community College, Wayne State University, and Bloomfield University School. Her work can be seen in the collections of Oakland University, Wayne State University, Detroit Receiving Hospital, Children\u2019s Hospital of Michigan, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and numerous private collections.\r\n\r\nThis exhibition consists of works from a variety of series created by Galbreath over the years: Telegraph, Storyboard, and Working Hard for a Living. Each series represents a unique exploration of themes, techniques, and social commentaries that reflect Galbreath\u2019s artistic journey and concerns for the world.\r\n\r\nTelegraph explores the aesthetic visual weights and balances between harmony and content, diving deep into how visual elements can convey messages and emotions. By portraying these self-employed individuals, often operating within informal economies, Galbreath draws attention to the unique challenges they face. These individuals frequently contend with low, inconsistent incomes, long hours, and sometimes exploitative conditions, fostering a sense of solidarity with those who labor under such circumstances.\r\n\r\nFurthermore, the series invites viewers to confront the broader societal structures that contribute to these inequities. On the Courtyard pillar, Karlsrud scales up photographs of objects found in liminal spaces surrounding campus buildings on Green Road, which the artist has encrusted in road salt. On the entryway pillar, Clegg zooms in on tiny fragments of found material from UMich\u2019s famous \u201crock\u201d to celebrate nearly seven decades of student art and activism. Both artists uplift aggregate of local human activity to reveal tiny worlds of found form. \n\nSally Clegg: Sentimentary Rock\nSentimentary Rock is a composition of paint slag collected from the UMich rock monument at the corner of Washtenaw Avenue and Hill Street. This colorful composite material has been accumulating at the base of the iconic limestone boulder since the mid 1950\u2019s, when students began a tradition of painting it in acts of protest, creativity, and ritual, sometimes multiple times per week. Akin to byproducts of industry such as \u201cFordite\u201d (collectable chunks of automotive overspray sometimes called \u2018Detroit agate\u2019), Sentimentary Rock includes thousands of layers, each dripped from a palimpsestic public proclamation. When processed, sculpted, sealed, assembled, and macro-photographed, the result is this enlarged array of tiny gems, intended to celebrate the indissoluble student voice. \n\nKim Karlsrud: What Amasses\nWhat Amasses is an assemblage of everyday found objects collected within the Miller Creek watershed, an urbanized drainage system that encompasses much of the city of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan campus. Selected objects were immersed in a road salt solution, allowing delicate crystalline formations to emerge. Road salt is a common material input into these hydrological networks during the winter months and exists in multiple states of refinement, expression, coherence, and fragmentation. Each object was then arranged, photographed, and enlarged to recontextualize these materials in ways that invite deeper reflections on how infrastructure and human agency blur notions of the natural and the artificial. \nArtist Statements\/Bios\n\nSally Clegg \nSally Clegg is an artist and educator from Pelham, Massachusetts. Her studio practice is rooted in sculpture and expanded printmaking, stemming from a fascination with human efforts to make meaning from our relationships to objects. Clegg integrates history, popular culture, literature and philosophy as material for artmaking, leveraging personal anecdote and humor to reveal the complexity, absurdity, and theoretical richness at play in our connections to things and to ourselves. \n\nClegg holds an MFA in Art from The University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design, and a BA in Art & English from Goucher College. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work can be found in permanent collections at Yale University, The New York Public Library, and elsewhere. It seemed to go by in a blur, pounding the road, seeing the world, raising babies and sending them to college, mowing lawns, romances, marriages, high school drama, endless airports, the nights at the Hollywood Bowl, the night at the Red Barn in Louisville dodging various barroom projectiles, frozen diesel lines, blast furnace desert heat, hours of practice, late nights and early mornings, and lots and lots and lots of laughter.\n \n40 years ago. No laptops, no cellular phones, no Google, no downloads, no Skype, no Tweets, no Apple, no Microsoft, no texting, no electric cars, no Uber. A different world. But there were three young men with drive and wit who wanted to keep a special music alive. They believed in preserving the heritage of Western Music and presenting it to a new generation. They believed in entertaining, and they did so\u2026 entertaining themselves as well as the audience! And they believed in creating original Western Music to continue the tradition, not just seal it in amber as a museum piece. What they did not realize at the time was that they would be doing the same thing 40 years later.\n \n40 years ago, Ranger Doug, Too Slim and the late Windy Bill Collins played that first date on the bitter cold evening of November 11th, 1977 at Herr Harry\u2019s Frank N\u2019 Stein Rathskeller in Nashville, and small listening room dates followed. By August of the following year demand was building, and while Windy Bill left, Woody Paul joined, and the true professional beginnings of the band began at the Kentucky State Fair, where the trio played 10 days for $2500- and bought their own rooms and meals out of that!\n \nA first wave followed, including appearances on Austin City Limits; recording contracts with Rounder, then MCA, then Columbia; guest appearances on the Grand Ole Opry leading to membership in 1982; and a three-year run on The Nashville Network with a TV show called \u201cTumbleweed Theater,\u201d which yet in turn led to a seven-year run on public radio with \u201cRiders Radio Theater. People Magazine, interested in the Riders phenomenon, ran a story which happily caught the eye of a Hollywood producer.\n \nAnd so the second wave broke, sending the boys to Hollywood to star in \u201cRiders In The Sky\u201d on CBS for a year on Saturday mornings, introducing them to yet another generation. More recordings, endless show dates, and television appearances followed for a decade before the fine folks at Pixar called and asked the quartet \u2013 by this time they had been joined by Joey the Cowpolka King \u2013 to sing a tune called \u201cWoody\u2019s Roundup\u201d in the movie \u201cToy Story 2.\u201d Thus, the third wave began, highlighted by a number of projects for Disney, including two albums, both of which won GRAMMY Awards!\n \nThe creation of satellite radio has recently given them a new platform, as they continue to produce episodes of the award winning \u201cClassic Cowboy Corral\u201d on Sirius\/XM.\n \nStill more road dates and recordings (several on their own Riders Radio Records label) and other film and television projects have filled the days and weeks and years, and since the quartet has slowed up very little, the numbers begin to add up: an astonishing 7,200+ appearances, 35 years on the Grand Ole Opry, 40 records albums (well, now CDs,) and tours of all 50 states and all over the world. Honors accumulated as well. In addition to the two Grammy Awards, Riders received numerous awards from the Western Music Association, including the highest: membership in the Western Music Hall of Fame; numerous Wrangler awards from the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum; awards from the Academy of Western Artists; enshrinement in the Walkway of Western Stars, and more.
