For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. As a child and young adult\, Chen attended and worked at Futurelink School\, a buxiban and her parents’ business. Located in the San Gabriel Valley\, CA\, Futurelink served hundreds of primarily East Asian students\, providing them with homework help and supplemental English and math lessons. We implement a large-scale field experiment among 50\,000 likely unemployed individuals to study the causes and labor supply implications of incomplete UI take-up. Informational letters increased applications and receipt\, with effects concentrated among low-wage workers. Rejection rates among treated applicants also increased: this suggests that the letters primarily reduced learning costs rather than improved eligibility beliefs. Randomized messages aimed at reducing free-rider stigma induced more applications\, primarily among high-wage job seekers. Although prior work finds that more generous UI slows job finding\, our take-up intervention modestly increased reemployment\, as work-search requirements hastened job finding among recipients but also screened out applicants who were unwilling or unable to verify their search. We develop and estimate a structural job search model calibrated to the reduced form-experimental results to quantify these frictions and show that lower search-compliance costs yield the largest welfare gains for unemployed workers. Many scholars have argued that Finley’s economic model was too simplistic and ultimately incorrect\, or they demonstrated just how much technological development did\, in fact\, take place across the ancient Mediterranean (Greene 2000\, Oleson 2008). Nevertheless\, even with his thesis significantly undermined\, the specific interactions of slavery and technology have been lost. Working from recent scholarship that has emphasized the huge variety of slaving systems in Classical Greece\, the Hellenistic Kingdoms\, and the Roman Empire (Porter 2025\, Larsen and Letteney 2025\, Vlassopoulos 2023)\, as well as frameworks that conceptualize technology beyond tools for accelerating efficiency\, this talk examines how different types of technology rose and fell with the expansion of various types of enslavement\, including in the fields of mining\, manufacturing\, farming\, infrastructure\, and medicine. Moreover\, by treating enslaved peoples as technologically proficient individuals\, who came from different regional traditions\, it acknowledges how enslavement distributed expertise across the ancient world. Overall\, it outlines how we might conceptualize the question of technology and freedom\, even in our current era\, where the future seems to hinge on this debate.\n\nDr. Webster investigates science\, technology\, medicine\, and philosophy in the ancient world. For the Willard Lectureship in Analytical Chemistry\, my presentation will focus on the chemistry and impacts of atmospheric aerosols as well as larger aqueous microdroplets found in clouds and fog. Aerosol and microdroplet surfaces represent important components of the Earth’s atmosphere where chemical reactions can occur. Poland’s Socialist Globalisation DESCRIPTION:Between the political thaw of 1955 and the collapse of the socialist project in 1989\, the Polish People's Republic developed close\, equal relations with many decolonizing countries in Asia\, Africa\, and the Middle East. This was not solely the result of Cold War expansion and competition between political camps. However\, socialist globalization\, although based on the ideals of left-wing internationalism\, also brought tangible benefits to the country rebuilding itself after the war. It was both a long and difficult process of establishing institutions and of Poles developing and learning a new\, anti-colonial\, non-racist language of international cooperation. Cegielski will illustrate this through three artistic exhibitions he is curating. They arose and are being developed based on scholarly work with forgotten archives from Poland\, India\, Ghana\, and Iraq.\n \n Max Cegielski is a writer\, curator\, and researcher\, who has authored several novels and works of non-fiction. As a curator\, he developed *Sklep Polsko-Indyjski/Prince Polonia* (co-curated with Janek Simon)\, which has been presented at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw\, Clark House Initiative in Mumbai\, and TRAFO Center for Contemporary Art in Szczecin (2017–2018).
