SUMMARY:Exhibition:'Redefining the Crown' Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you? DESCRIPTION:Making Armenian Americans  \nCurators: Michael Pifer (U-M| MES) and Kathryn Babayan (U-M|History)\nProject Save Photograph Archive/Archive Alive Project\n\nMaking Armenian Americans invites viewers into a moment of possibility in the early 20th century\, when Armenians fleeing violence at the end of the Ottoman Empire came to reinvent themselves in the promise of America. Drawn from the archives of Project Save\, these photographs capture different valences of American life\, as experienced\, performed\, and imagined by Armenian immigrants. From naturalization classes to festivals of nations\, from breaking new ground for churches to mundane tableaus of Thanksgiving and Christmas\, this range of photographs offers a glimpse of a community in the making\, one that sought to preserve a memory of its Ottoman past even while anticipating an American future.

DESCRIPTION:Exhibit Opening: March 12\, 2026\nExhibit Dates: March 12-30\, 2026\, International Institute Gallery\, 547 Weiser Hall\n\nSet within Kafafian's speculative future world Azadistan—a place of magic and spirits beyond a digital collapse\, Հմայարան / Hmayaran is an immersive shrine housing a series of soft-sculptural artifacts reimagining objects Armenians have traditionally crafted for spiritual power and protection.\n \n     Kafafian's focus in this exhibition is on the marks Armenians carve into stone\, clay and wood to imbue meaning\, memory and magic into their lived environments\, particularly as part of folk traditions outside of the realms of church and state.\n   \n     Channeled from the collective Armenian diasporic imaginary\, Kafafian's Portal Fire series depicts a narrative story that emerges from the materials as they are brought into relationship through weaving\, dyeing\, embellishment and thread. In this story world hybrid cultural practices and alternative spiritual modes develop from embodied traditions in response to the changing physical and cultural landscape of Southwest Asia in a future where technological catastrophe has severed global communications and erased digital archives. DESCRIPTION:March 9-April 3\, 2026\n--\nThe public is cordially invited to an artist's reception on Wednesday\, March 27th at 4:30 pm in the RC Art Gallery.\n--\n\nPublic Workshop: On March 19th from 1 to 3pm\, join exhibiting artist Stamps School of Art & Design Assistant Professor Angela Chen for a collaborative bookmaking workshop! Drawing on the themes from her latest book and exhibition After School 課後\, participants are invited to critique educational systems by cutting up old textbooks and creating new photocopy collages. All materials will be provided\, but participants are welcome to bring their own texts to deconstruct!\n\n--\nAngela Chen - Artist Statement: Angela Chen’s After School brings together collage\, sculpture\, and new and historical photographs to unpack the culture of after school tutoring centers in California. Known as 補習班 (buxiban) in Chinese\, after schools are referred to colloquially as “cram schools” and by scholars as “shadow education.” Operating simultaneously as spaces of community\, care\, and control\, these schools can be demanding and factory-like\; but they also deliver essential childcare services to busy parents\, many of whom are new immigrants. As a child and young adult\, Chen attended and worked at Futurelink School\, a buxiban and her parents’ business. Located in the San Gabriel Valley\, CA\, Futurelink served hundreds of primarily East Asian students\, providing them with homework help and supplemental English and math lessons. Inspired by Futurelink’s vast archive of photographs\, workbooks\, objects\, and advertisements\, After School explores the role of education in Asian American enclaves and challenges stereotypes about Asian American students. Assemblages combine Futurelink photographs with photographs of California Chinese schools during the Chinese Exclusion era to reflect on the ongoing legacies of racism\, segregation\, and US immigration policy within the Asian American experience.\n\nAaron Turner - Artist Statement: Aaron Turner’s Black Alchemy (2014 - Present) speaks to the broad spectrum of identity and speculative aesthetics\, drawing from lived experience\, archives\, American history\, and art history. He uses the light in combination with the Darkroom\, alternative and 19th-century printing processes\, the view camera (4x5 & 8x10)\, geometric abstraction\, assemblage\, and monochromatic pictorial experimentation to respond to internal questions about representation\, the discursive enterprise\, and the artists' role in the studio space.\nBlack Alchemy provides a lens through which he sees the world while simultaneously considering the past\, present\, and future\, translating knowledge and perspective outside the intellectual studio space.\n\nRicky Weaver - Artist Statement: Ricky Weaver’s work co-conspires with the poetics and temporality of Black feminist metaphysics embeded in the Black Quotidian. These images locate a code that can be traced back to the Middle Passage—one that disrupts the paradigmatic ways of archiving Blackness and outsmarts surveillance technologies as such. Her application of scripture\, hymn\, and colloquial passages come together in acts of dark sousveillance to recall language that implies worlds that don’t require an escape. She addresses the sonic\, linguistic\, and visual as a way to posture the body as a central apparatus for storing\, downloading\, and transferring archives.

DESCRIPTION:Iranian-American artist Sheida Soleimani explores themes of migration\, political exile\, queerness\, and environmental crisis through the wildly imaginative and intricate scenarios she first stages in her studio. The tableaus—which often include live animals\, props\, even her parents—are then photographed\, documenting the artist’s process. Each photograph becomes a part of Soleimani’s rich visual storytelling.      \n\n*Flyways *presents a series of new photographs that include images evocative of her family’s history and migration story in juxtaposition with images of injured birds that are representative of Soleimani’s work as a wildlife rehabilitator. (In 2018\, Soleimani founded Congress of Birds\, a wild bird rehabilitation center in Rhode Island.) The change in her practice to include bird rescue results in a revolutionary body of work steeped in passion and articulated in a completely original visual language. DESCRIPTION:Lynn Galbreath\, a Detroit based artist who grew up in Argentina\, is a former recipient of the Creative Artists’ Grant from the Arts Foundation of Michigan and the Michigan Individual Artist Grant from Michigan Council For The Arts. Galbreath’s work has been showcased locally\, nationally and internationally in over 20 solo/two person and over 100 group exhibitions.\n\nGalbreath has an M.F.A. from the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art\, Art History\, & Design\, Wayne State University\, Detroit\, MI\; and a B.F.A. with Permanent K-12 Certification from The Gwen Frostic School of Art\, Western MI University\, Kalamazoo\, MI. Galbreath has chaperoned eleven intensive\, immersive art experiences to Italy\, Spain\, France\, Belgium\, England\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, Austria\, and the Czech Republic. Lynn is a retired Adjunct Associate Professor of Studio Art from Oakland University\, where she has been on the faculty of the Department of Art & Art History since 2000. Lynn has also instructed studio art and design at the College For Creative Studies\, University of Detroit Mercy — School of Architecture\, Macomb Community College\, Wayne State University\, and Bloomfield University School. Her work can be seen in the collections of Oakland University\, Wayne State University\, Detroit Receiving Hospital\, Children’s Hospital of Michigan\, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and numerous private collections.\n\nThis exhibition consists of works from a variety of series created by Galbreath over the years: Telegraph\, Storyboard\, and Working Hard for a Living. Each series represents a unique exploration of themes\, techniques\, and social commentaries that reflect Galbreath’s artistic journey and concerns for the world.\n\nTelegraph explores the aesthetic visual weights and balances between harmony and content\, diving deep into how visual elements can convey messages and emotions. This series invites viewers to reflect on the way art communicates through its formal qualities\, as well as its narrative possibilities. The careful interplay of shapes\, colors\, and textures in these works prompts an examination of the viewer's perception and emotional response. By utilizing abstract forms\, Galbreath encourages an engagement that goes beyond mere observation\, seeking to provoke thought about how aesthetic choices influence understanding and meaning.\n\nOn the other hand\, Storyboard is a series of image-driven installation paintings that vary greatly in size\, showcasing Galbreath’s versatility and creative ingenuity. The titles of the works draw inspiration from the years spent creating visuals for TV commercials and public service announcements\, illustrating how commercial art often intertwines with societal messages. This series emphasizes the profound impact visual narratives have on consumer culture and public perception\, underscoring the artist's belief in the potency of imagery to shape narratives. The installations weave a complex fabric of storytelling that challenges viewers to reconsider their relationship with media and the messages they consume daily.\n\nWorking Hard for a Living pays tribute to our sustainable and unsustainable resources\, shedding light on the individuals who toil diligently within these economic frameworks. This series highlights the hard-working suppliers of essential products\, including Farm Market Managers\, Fishmongers\, and Beach Vendors. By portraying these self-employed individuals\, often operating within informal economies\, Galbreath draws attention to the unique challenges they face. These individuals frequently contend with low\, inconsistent incomes\, long hours\, and sometimes exploitative conditions\, fostering a sense of solidarity with those who labor under such circumstances.\n\nFurthermore\, the series invites viewers to confront the broader societal structures that contribute to these inequities. Galbreath's work serves not only as a tribute but also as a call to action to consider how our consumer habits and economic policies affect the livelihoods of others. The layered narratives present in this series open a dialogue about the value we place on labor and the often unseen struggles that support our day-to-day lives. Through these explorations\, Galbreath establishes a multifaceted narrative that intertwines art with activism\, compelling audiences to engage both aesthetically and ethically with the realities depicted in the exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. The natural conditions\, including light\, shadow\, and atmosphere\, change dramatically from hour to hour and day to day\, forcing the artist to respond quickly and decisively. This approach\, born of a direct engagement with the subject and the fleeting nature of the scene\, along with his wet-on-wet technique\, keeps the work fresh and immediate. By immersing himself in the environment\, Swafford captures the diverse textures and vibrant colors that characterize Detroit’s landscape\, imbuing his work with a sense of urgency and spontaneity. Each brushstroke conveys a commitment not only to visual accuracy but also to emotional resonance\, as he strives to encapsulate the spirit of a place that is both loved and contested.\n\nIn addition to these works\, the artist constantly sketches ideas both for paintings and for designing projects in his business. These sketches serve as visual language\, helping him clarify and refine his concepts before bringing them to life. They become a means to communicate ideas to clients and his crew and become an extension of his voice—an academic exercise rooted in artistic practice that fosters collaboration and innovation. The act of sketching also reflects his evolving relationship with the city\, as each drawing encapsulates fleeting moments of inspiration drawn directly from his surroundings. This duality of function—creating art for exhibition and conceptualizing designs for projects—demonstrates Swafford’s versatility and adaptability as an artist.\n\nSwafford received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design\, and while at RISD\, he was part of the European Honors Program. His education not only honed his technical skills but also broadened his artistic perspective through exposure to varied artistic traditions. He has shown his work in both solo and group exhibitions in Chicago\, Kansas City\, and New York State. Each exhibition serves as a testament to his commitment to his craft and his ability to engage diverse audiences\, offering them an opportunity to explore the complex narratives woven into each landscape.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Graphical Description of Biochemical Systems via Reaction Networks
DESCRIPTION:A reaction network is a graphical configuration that can describe many biochemical systems with interactions between species (molecules). If the abundances of the species involved in a reaction network are small\, then the randomness inherent in the molecular interactions is important to the system dynamics\, and hence the abundances are modeled stochastically with a jump-by-jump fashion continuous-time Markov chain. In the first half of this talk\, we discuss classical and recent issues in reaction network literature\, which especially include how the graphical structures of reaction networks are related to stability and mixing times of the associated Markov processes. We will also discuss how the stability and mixing times can be used for practical problems in system biology and biology computing.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Innovation Races: Strategic Complementarities and Global Competition Spillovers
DESCRIPTION:The Innovation Race: Experimental Evidence on Advanced Technologies\nWe present a large-scale field experiment test of strategic complementarities in firms’ technology adoption. Our experiment was embedded in a Bank of Italy survey covering around 3\,000 firms. We elicited firms’ beliefs about competitors’ adoption of two advanced technologies: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics. We randomly provided half of the sample with accurate information about adoption rates. Most firms substantially underestimated competitors’ current adoption\, and when provided with information\, they updated their expectations about competitors’ future adoption. The information increased firms’ own intended future adoption of robotics: a 1 pp increase in the share of competitors expected to adopt advanced technologies causes an increase of 0.704 pp in the firm’s own robotics adoption. We do not observe a significant effect on AI adoption\, but we cannot rule out modest effects either. Our findings provide causal evidence on coordination in innovation and illustrate how information frictions shape technology diffusion.\n\nWe present a large-scale field experiment on the geography of strategic complementarities in firms’ AI investment. Our experiment was embedded in the ECB’s Survey on the Access to Finance of Enterprises (SAFE)\, covering around 3\,300 firms across twelve European countries. We elicited firms’ beliefs about the share of domestic and foreign competitors investing in AI\, and randomly provided half of the sample with accurate information about both groups. Firms substantially underestimated competitors’ current AI investment\, especially for foreign competitors\, and updated both domestic and foreign beliefs in response to the information treatment. The information also increased firms’ own expected AI investment rate. Using a 2SLS framework\, we find that a 1 pp increase in the expected share of domestic competitors investing in AI raises the firm’s own expected AI investment rate by 0.567 pp\, while the corresponding effect of foreign competitors is close to zero and statistically insignificant. Our findings provide causal evidence that information frictions shape the diffusion of innovation and that strate- gic complementarities in AI investment are much stronger at the domestic than at the foreign level.

What would it mean to look at the suburbs as a site of new possibilities rather than a place many have tried to escape? This event will explore the new realities of suburban living and what we can do to work towards greater equity and racial justice.\n\nThis event is free and open to U-M students\, faculty\, staff\, alumni\, and community members.\n\nLunch from Jerusalem Garden provided.\n\nAbout the speakers\n\nR. L'Heureux Lewis-McCoy is a scholar whose work and activism center issues of race\, place\, education\, and opportunity. He is an Associate Professor at New York University in the Sociology of Education program in the School of Culture\, Education and Human Development. He is author of the forthcoming book A Dream Dissolved: How Opportunity Hoarding Bankrupted Education (One Signal – Simon & Shuster/Atria). He is the co-lead investigator of the Black Suburban Experience Project. His first book\, Inequality in the Promised Land (Stanford University Press\, 2014) tackled how inequality persisted in an \"integrated\" school and suburban community. His larger research interests include race and racism\, gender justice\, and community mobilization.\n\nMo Torres (MPP ‘15) is a sociologist interested in urban political economy\, inequality\, the sociology of race/racism\, and the politics of knowledge production. He is a postdoctoral fellow in the Michigan Society of Fellows and an assistant professor of sociology and public policy. His current book project uses mixed and historical methods to explore the politics of post-industrial decline and the production of urban austerity in Michigan from the 1970s to the present. He is a U-M (MPP '15) and Fulbright (Brazil '19) alumnus and received his PhD in sociology from Harvard University in 2023\, where he held fellowships at the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Stone Program in Inequality and Social Policy. A first-generation college graduate\, Mo is a former Detroit Public Schools teacher.\n\nAlexandra K. Murphy is the Associate Director of Social Science Research at Mcity. Murphy is also an Assistant Research Scientist at Poverty Solutions in the Ford School of Public Policy\, and a Faculty Associate of the Population Studies Center at the Institute for Social Research\, all at the University of Michigan. She received her PhD in Sociology and Social Policy from Princeton University. In her research\, she uses ethnographic methods to examine how poverty and inequality are experienced\, structured\, and reproduced across and within multiple domains of social life\, including neighborhoods\, social networks\, and the state. One line of research investigates the new suburban poverty. Murphy's work in this area has focused on variations in social service responses to rising poverty across diverse suburbs\; urban and suburban comparisons in social service capacity\; and the theoretical\, conceptual\, and methodological issues suburban poverty raises for a sociological understanding of geography and inequality.

Using biobank-scale human data\, my dissertation proposal tests important evolutionary hypotheses on sexual antagonism of mitochondrial DNA mutations\, similarity between genetic and phenotypic correlations\, and intersexual selection in humans. In this seminar\, I will focus on a test of the mother's curse hypothesis\, which posits that maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA mutations that exclusively harm males evade purifying selection.

DESCRIPTION:Assistant Professor of Performing Arts Technology Julie Zhu performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

Once you've registered\, https://myumi.ch/79Dp1\n\nWhat happens when Italy’s most “sacred” daily ritual\, an espresso at a coffee bar\, is increasingly performed not by Italians but by Chinese migrants? Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Bologna\, this talk examines how racialized Chinese migrants preserve this distinctive Italian social and cultural tradition by deploying local knowledge and taste\, often gleaned from longtime residents who have come\, sometimes resentfully\, to regard this arrangement as a new normal. In particular\, it highlights how diasporic Chinese entrepreneurs both reproduce Italy's existing racial hierarchies while also forming their own racial categories and understandings that mirror China’s growing geopolitical and economic power.\n   \n   Grazia Deng is a research scholar at Brandeis University. As a sociocultural anthropologist\, she studies global China through the lenses of migration\, race\, and global capitalism. She is the author of the book *Chinese Espresso: Contested Race and Convivial Space in Contemporary Italy* (Princeton University Press\, 2024)\, which is shortlisted for the Gourmand Book Award. She is now working on a new project on Chinese-led racial capitalism in the Made-in-Italy fashion industry.

DESCRIPTION:\n\nTuesday\, March 31\, 1:00 PM (EDT) / 7:00 PM (CET) / 6:00 PM (WET)\n\nNick Tobier + Zagreb based sculptor Vladimir Novak\, winner of the 2025 Radoslav Putar Award\, will discuss Novak’s work that mines our relationships between city space and sculptural space\, both site-specifically and generally. The discussion will focus on a number of his projects\, such as transforming the tall skinny volume of a former light bulb testing facility in Croatia’s capital into a sonic and auditory beacon\, which plays back the tempos of daily life\; or Novak’s installations and objects that challenge our assumptions of weight\, mass\, and the roles of spectators. Through material with specific associations of weight and mass – from monumental steel and straw constructions to working with light and space – Vladimir Novak’s practice engages contemporary dialogues on the roles of performances without performers\, coincidental audiences\, and performances by audiences.\n\nThis program will be streamed online via Zoom at this link. This virtual talk will also be live-streamed at RU’s space at 360 Court Street\, Brooklyn\, NY for visitors who wish to attend in person.\n\nVladimir Novak is the recipient of the 2025 Radoslav Putar Award. Vladimir Novak is a Zagreb-based artist whose practice investigates the limits of sculpture as a medium through the use of objects\, (day)light\, and sound installations\, with a particular focus on space\, media\, and affective intensities. Through iterative processes\, he seeks to dismantle established media boundaries by exploring the visible and the invisible\, engaging with concepts such as body–mass\, object–installation\, stasis–movement\, and light–shadow. His recent projects In Visible\, Calm\, and Day for a Day\, employ radically minimalist and subtle interventions that emphasize processuality and the entanglement of artworks with natural and urban rhythms\, their transformation across media\, and their physical and socio-ecological resonances. Operating at the threshold of perception\, within the ambivalence between malfunction and artistic act\, his work challenges the perceptions of time and attention\, questioning the boundary between aesthetic experience and banal everyday events.\n\nNick Tobier studied history\, sculpture and landscape architecture\, and has worked at The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia\, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and Storefront for Art & Architecture in NYC\, and as a designer with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation/ Bronx Division. Nick’s focus as artist-designer-educator is on the social lives of public places\, both in built structures and events\, from bus stops to kitchens and boulevards. His work is part of the 2025 Venice Biennial\, the 2024 Split Biennial\, and has been seen at the Smithsonian\, The Queens Museum\, NY\, The Mattress Factory\, Pittsburgh\, the Prague Quadrennial\, the London Festival of Games at Somerset House in London\, and upcoming projects at KRAK Center for Contemporary Art in Bihać\, Bosnia. Nick has received support for his work from the NEA \, The Graham Foundation for the Advanced Study of Visual Art and the Harpo Foundation\, and writes for the Trieste-based magazine Juliet on artists\, galleries\, and cultural centers in Bosnia\, Croatia\, and Serbia.

DESCRIPTION:We study optimal estimation when the likelihood may be misspecified.  Building on tools from the theory of decision-making under uncertainty\, we analyze a class of axiomatically grounded optimality criteria which nests several existing misspecification-robust objectives. Within this class\, we introduce the constrained multiplier criterion\, which allows for flexible misspecification attitudes. We prove a local asymptotic minimax theorem for this criterion\, extending a classical efficiency bound to a limit experiment which incorporates both misspecification concerns and moment constraints. We characterize asymptotically optimal estimators as Bayes decision rules under a flat prior and an exponentially tilted likelihood that incorporates the moment constraints\, and show that feasible plug-in analogs are asymptotically optimal.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Aiton Lecture: Señorita Telefonista: Sexual Harassment\, Pregnancy Discrimination\, and Class Identities in Early Twentieth Century Mexico City
DESCRIPTION:At the height of worker mobilization in revolutionary Mexico City some of the most combative workers were telephone operators. In this talk\, Susie S. Porter takes us from switchboards to union halls\, and into the streets as working women fought for better wages and against marriage bans\, pregnancy discrimination\, and sexual harassment.\n\nTelephone operators’ struggles to defend their bodily autonomy were historically contingent and constructed through the material and discursive conditions of class. Countervailing practices of class distinction shaped women’s capacity to speak and informed their activism. As languages of class circulated––by management\, organized labor\, working men\, and working women themselves––working and middle- class identities were made and unmade. The success of organized labor hung in the balance.\n\nSusie S. Porter\, Professor of History and Gender Studies at the University of Utah\, is the author of two award-winning books: Workingwomen in Mexico City: Public Discourses and Material Conditions\, 1879-1931 (University of Arizona Press\, 2003)\; and\, From Angel to Office Worker: Middle-Class Identity and Female Consciousness in Mexico\, 1890-1950 (University of Nebraska Press\, 2018). Spanish-language versions of both books were published by El Colegio de Michoacán Press.\n\nHer forthcoming book is titled: Señorita Telefonista: Sexual Harassment\, Gender Discrimination\, and Class Identities in Early Twentieth-Century Mexico City (University of Nebraska\, 2026)\n\nPorter is also co-editor and contributor to 3 edited volumes and a documents reader in Mexican history. Susie is a Member of the Mexican Academy of History (as Corresponsal Internacional). She has held residential fellowships at the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies (2022-23) and L’Institut d’Études Avancées de Nantes\, France (2023-24).\n\nShe serves as a country conditions expertise for asylum cases\, was a co-founder of the Westside Leadership Institute (Spanish language version) and works as an organizer with the Salt Lake City Latinx community. She served as chair of the Gender Studies Division (2010-2020) and\, since 2021\, as director of the Center for Latin American Studies. For her work in the community\, Porter was designated Distinguished Professor in the Humanities at the University of Utah (2019).\n\nThis lecture is sponsored by the Aiton Lecture Committee.

DESCRIPTION:Maxamed Abu-maye\, assistant professor in the Department of African American and African Studies at Ohio State University\, speaks on his project\, \"Black Muslim Refugee: Militarism\, Policing\, and Somali American Resistance to State Violence.\"\n\nThis multi-sited project\, the first of its kind\, exposes the links between U.S. military violence abroad and police brutality at home through a profound exploration of Somali refugee lives. \"Black Muslim Refugee\" traces the globe-spanning journeys of these refugees\, from civil war–era Somalia to the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya to their eventual arrival in San Diego\, and Abu-maye analyzes their experiences through the dual lenses of anti-Blackness and Islamophobia. He situates their displacement within the larger context of East Africa's colonial history\, as well as the policy consequences of the American-backed war on terror and war on drugs. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Catalysts for Change: Cultivating a Culture for Chemistry Graduate Student Success
DESCRIPTION:This project investigates how departmental culture shapes chemistry graduate students’ belonging\, development\, and access to opportunity. The project responds to documented challenges in doctoral education including unclear success criteria\, inconsistent mentoring\, and hidden cultural norms and seeks to generate actionable\, evidence-based pathways for systemic improvement. We designed and deployed a mixed-methods pilot survey to chemistry graduate students measuring six domains informed by prior graduate-education and equity scholarship: (1) graduate milestones\, (2) research competency\, (3) teaching competency\, (4) advisor support (academic and emotional)\, (5) peer and departmental culture\, and (6) academic and demographic background. This talk will center on the qualitative data which is founded on academic citizenship\, which is a set of behaviors\, responsibilities\, and relational practices through which members of an academic community contribute to its collective functioning\, integrity\, and well-being beyond their individual scholarly outputs. It includes activities such as mentoring\, service\, collaboration\, care work\, and stewardship that sustain learning environments\, support colleagues and students\, and advance the shared mission of the institution and discipline. Findings show that academic citizenship is unevenly distributed across student groups and is most strongly predicted by research competency and access to departmental resources. Advisor emotional support and advisor skill dynamics emerged as significant contributors to academic citizenship. Results informed department-level interventions\, including (1) a redesigned first-year experience course integrating research\, teaching\, communication\, and wellness\, and (2) a multidimensional mentoring model grounded in sociopolitical noticing and disciplinary metaphors (chemist\, family\, coach). The project demonstrates that departmental culture can be surfaced\, measured\, and intentionally reshaped to create conditions where graduate students thrive because of rather than in spite of our systems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Elastic Turbulence in 3D Porous Media
DESCRIPTION:A wide range of environmental\, industrial\, and energy processes rely on transport in disordered 3D porous media. In many of these settings\, transport is limited by strong flow heterogeneities and the steady\, laminar flow imposed by geometric confinement (Re«1). Polymer additives have potential as a key engineering tool for modifying these flows to improve transport. However\, the flow behavior of these rheologically-complex fluids remains poorly understood in these disordered settings—in large part due to imaging limitations. \n\nWe address this gap by fabricating transparent 3D porous media and directly imaging the flow in situ. We find that polymer stretching can give rise to an elastic instability that generates turbulent-like fluctuations under conditions prohibitive for traditional turbulence. Combining microscopic flow measurements with theoretical modeling\, we demonstrate that viscous dissipation associated with this instability is responsible for an anomalous increase in macroscopic flow resistance\, resolving an over-50-year-old puzzle. We then show how these chaotic fluctuations can be harnessed to enhance pore-scale mixing of solutes by 3–6×\, and the rate of chemical reactions by an order of magnitude. This work demonstrates how couplings between complex geometries and complex fluid rheology can give rise to intriguing flow behaviors—providing new avenues to understand\, control\, and engineer transport in confined spaces.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium: Randomized algorithms for very large scale linear algebra
DESCRIPTION:The talk will describe how randomized algorithms can effectively\, accurately\, and reliably solve linear algebraic problems that are omnipresent in scientific computing and in data analysis. We will focus on techniques for low rank approximation\, since these methods are particularly simple and powerful\, and are well understood mathematically. The talk will also briefly survey how randomized techniques can be applied to construct compressed representations of global operators such as solution operators to elliptic PDEs\, boundary-to-boundary operators such as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map\, and time evolution operators of parabolic PDEs.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Analysis Seminar: Hyperbolic systems for the Einstein equations: local well-posedness and energy estimate
DESCRIPTION:This talk continues the discussion of hyperbolic formulations of the vacuum Einstein equations (VEE). The previous talk in Fall 2025\, we introduced the first local well-posedness result\, established by Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat in 1952 using the “wave gauge”. This talk considers alternative approaches when assuming asymptotic flatness. By evolving VEE with a “maximal time foliation”\, one can establish an elliptic-hyperbolic local well-posedness and an electric-magnetic type energy estimate. These are important ingredients in proof of global stability of Minkowski spacetime (Christodoulou–Klainerman\, 1993).

Join us for a dynamic conversation with Lonnie G. Bunch III\, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and Lynette Clemetson\, Director of Wallace House Center for Journalists\, as they reflect on the significance of the 250th anniversary of the United States.  At a moment in which discussions about our shared past and collective future feel especially urgent\, this event offers an opportunity to learn from a leader who has devoted his career to informing and inspiring Americans to strive for the public good. \n\nQ & A will follow and copies of Secretary Bunch's book *A Fool's Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush\, Obama\, and Trump* will be available for purchase. \n\nParking is available at the Thayer Parking Structure\, 216 S. Thayer\, at the standard charge of $10/vehicle.\n\nLonnie G. Bunch III is the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian. He assumed his position June 16\, 2019. As Secretary\, he oversees 21 museums\, 21 libraries\, the National Zoo\, numerous research centers\, and several education units and centers. Two new museums—the National Museum of the American Latino and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum—are in development. Bunch was the founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Bunch chronicled the creation of the museum in his book\, *A Fool’s Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush\, Obama\, and Trump*\, and is the first historian to be Secretary of the Institution. Since 2024\, Bunch has been Honorary Professor of Practice at Queen’s University Belfast. A member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences\, Bunch received France’s highest award\, The Legion of Honor\, in 2021.\n\nLynette Clemetson is Director of Wallace House Center for Journalists\, home of the Knight-Wallace Fellowships for Journalists and the Livingston Awards for Young Journalists at the University of Michigan. She came to the university from NPR where she was Senior Director of Strategy and Content Initiatives\, developing and guiding projects across broadcast\, digital and events to develop new audiences. Her career in journalism spans newspapers\, magazines and audio across a range of platforms. As a reporter\, she was a Washington-based correspondent for *The New York Times *and *Newsweek*\, writing about politics\, social issues and demographic change. Prior to her domestic correspondent work\, she was an international correspondent for *Newsweek *based in Hong Kong\, where she covered the former British colony’s return to Chinese rule in 1997. She moved into digital strategy and leadership in 2008 as the founding managing editor of TheRoot.com\, launched for The Washington Post Company with Henry Louis Gates Jr. She is also the former Director of Content Strategy at Pew Center on the States.\n\n*This 2026 Marc and Constance Jacobson Lecture is presented by the Institute for the Humanities in partnership with Wallace House Center for Journalists.
