DESCRIPTION:Thursdays | 5:30–7:00 PM | February 5 - April 2 What would it look like to pause—really pause—in the middle of a busy semester?\nTo gather with others who are curious about meaning\, purpose\, and what helps us feel grounded and whole?Spiritual Wellness is an 8-week small-group experience for students who want space to reflect\, connect\, and explore their inner lives—no matter their spiritual\, religious\, or secular background. If you’ve been longing for deeper wisdom\, authentic connection\, or a place where your questions are welcome\, this space is for you.In a world that often feels rushed\, isolating\, or divided\, this gathering offers something different: a warm\, welcoming community where you can slow down\, be present\, and engage what truly nourishes you. Each week includes guided practices\, shared reflection\, wisdom traditions\, and meaningful conversation—designed to support spiritual wellness\, genuine relationships\, and a deep sense of belonging.The series is facilitated by Kelsey Lewis\, with support from guest facilitators who bring diverse voices and practices. Because trust and community grow over time\, participants commit to weekly attendance for all 8 weeks\, ending with a closing celebration to honor the journey we’ve shared.$250 stipend for participants who complete the full program\nLimited to 12 students to create an intimate\, supportive group\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:'Redefining the Crown' Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you? DESCRIPTION:Making Armenian Americans  \nCurators: Michael Pifer (U-M| MES) and Kathryn Babayan (U-M|History)\nProject Save Photograph Archive/Archive Alive Project\n\nMaking Armenian Americans invites viewers into a moment of possibility in the early 20th century\, when Armenians fleeing violence at the end of the Ottoman Empire came to reinvent themselves in the promise of America. Drawn from the archives of Project Save\, these photographs capture different valences of American life\, as experienced\, performed\, and imagined by Armenian immigrants. From naturalization classes to festivals of nations\, from breaking new ground for churches to mundane tableaus of Thanksgiving and Christmas\, this range of photographs offers a glimpse of a community in the making\, one that sought to preserve a memory of its Ottoman past even while anticipating an American future.

DESCRIPTION:View \"Threads of Heritage: Syrian Textiles as Living History\,\" a cultural exhibit exploring the artistry\, symbolism\, and regional diversity of traditional Syrian garments. Featuring handcrafted pieces from cities such as Hama\, Aleppo\, Homs\, and Saraqib\, the exhibit highlights textile practices that reflect identity\, memory\, and cultural continuity. Many of these traditions are increasingly at risk of disappearing\, making preservation efforts especially urgent. \n\nThis exhibit\, on display in the rotunda of the Clark Library\, follows a live presentation held on March 30 and offers you an opportunity to engage with Syrian textile heritage as both an artistic and historical narrative.

DESCRIPTION:A special display at the Gerald Ford Presidential Library will feature the Northwest Ordinance of 1787\, on loan from the NARA\, and on display in Michigan for the first time. Drafted by the Confederation Congress at the same time as the Constitution\, the Ordinance outlined a framework for government in the northwest territory\, defined the rights guaranteed in that territory\, and created a process for admitting new states to the United States. The display offers a rare opportunity to view a document that helped shape the ideals and values of the young nation.

DESCRIPTION:March 9-April 3\, 2026\n--\nThe public is cordially invited to an artist's reception on Wednesday\, March 27th at 4:30 pm in the RC Art Gallery.\n--\n\nPublic Workshop: On March 19th from 1 to 3pm\, join exhibiting artist Stamps School of Art & Design Assistant Professor Angela Chen for a collaborative bookmaking workshop! Drawing on the themes from her latest book and exhibition After School 課後\, participants are invited to critique educational systems by cutting up old textbooks and creating new photocopy collages. All materials will be provided\, but participants are welcome to bring their own texts to deconstruct!\n\n--\nAngela Chen - Artist Statement: Angela Chen’s After School brings together collage\, sculpture\, and new and historical photographs to unpack the culture of after school tutoring centers in California. Known as 補習班 (buxiban) in Chinese\, after schools are referred to colloquially as “cram schools” and by scholars as “shadow education.” Operating simultaneously as spaces of community\, care\, and control\, these schools can be demanding and factory-like\; but they also deliver essential childcare services to busy parents\, many of whom are new immigrants. As a child and young adult\, Chen attended and worked at Futurelink School\, a buxiban and her parents’ business. Located in the San Gabriel Valley\, CA\, Futurelink served hundreds of primarily East Asian students\, providing them with homework help and supplemental English and math lessons. Inspired by Futurelink’s vast archive of photographs\, workbooks\, objects\, and advertisements\, After School explores the role of education in Asian American enclaves and challenges stereotypes about Asian American students. Assemblages combine Futurelink photographs with photographs of California Chinese schools during the Chinese Exclusion era to reflect on the ongoing legacies of racism\, segregation\, and US immigration policy within the Asian American experience.\n\nAaron Turner - Artist Statement: Aaron Turner’s Black Alchemy (2014 - Present) speaks to the broad spectrum of identity and speculative aesthetics\, drawing from lived experience\, archives\, American history\, and art history. He uses the light in combination with the Darkroom\, alternative and 19th-century printing processes\, the view camera (4x5 & 8x10)\, geometric abstraction\, assemblage\, and monochromatic pictorial experimentation to respond to internal questions about representation\, the discursive enterprise\, and the artists' role in the studio space.\nBlack Alchemy provides a lens through which he sees the world while simultaneously considering the past\, present\, and future\, translating knowledge and perspective outside the intellectual studio space.\n\nRicky Weaver - Artist Statement: Ricky Weaver’s work co-conspires with the poetics and temporality of Black feminist metaphysics embeded in the Black Quotidian. These images locate a code that can be traced back to the Middle Passage—one that disrupts the paradigmatic ways of archiving Blackness and outsmarts surveillance technologies as such. Her application of scripture\, hymn\, and colloquial passages come together in acts of dark sousveillance to recall language that implies worlds that don’t require an escape. DESCRIPTION:Iranian-American artist Sheida Soleimani explores themes of migration\, political exile\, queerness\, and environmental crisis through the wildly imaginative and intricate scenarios she first stages in her studio. The tableaus—which often include live animals\, props\, even her parents—are then photographed\, documenting the artist’s process. Each photograph becomes a part of Soleimani’s rich visual storytelling.      \n\n*Flyways *presents a series of new photographs that include images evocative of her family’s history and migration story in juxtaposition with images of injured birds that are representative of Soleimani’s work as a wildlife rehabilitator. DESCRIPTION:Lynn Galbreath\, a Detroit based artist who grew up in Argentina\, is a former recipient of the Creative Artists’ Grant from the Arts Foundation of Michigan and the Michigan Individual Artist Grant from Michigan Council For The Arts. Galbreath’s work has been showcased locally\, nationally and internationally in over 20 solo/two person and over 100 group exhibitions.\n\nGalbreath has an M.F.A. from the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art\, Art History\, & Design\, Wayne State University\, Detroit\, MI\; and a B.F.A. with Permanent K-12 Certification from The Gwen Frostic School of Art\, Western MI University\, Kalamazoo\, MI. Galbreath has chaperoned eleven intensive\, immersive art experiences to Italy\, Spain\, France\, Belgium\, England\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, Austria\, and the Czech Republic. Lynn is a retired Adjunct Associate Professor of Studio Art from Oakland University\, where she has been on the faculty of the Department of Art & Art History since 2000. Lynn has also instructed studio art and design at the College For Creative Studies\, University of Detroit Mercy — School of Architecture\, Macomb Community College\, Wayne State University\, and Bloomfield University School. Her work can be seen in the collections of Oakland University\, Wayne State University\, Detroit Receiving Hospital\, Children’s Hospital of Michigan\, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and numerous private collections.\n\nThis exhibition consists of works from a variety of series created by Galbreath over the years: Telegraph\, Storyboard\, and Working Hard for a Living. Each series represents a unique exploration of themes\, techniques\, and social commentaries that reflect Galbreath’s artistic journey and concerns for the world.\n\nTelegraph explores the aesthetic visual weights and balances between harmony and content\, diving deep into how visual elements can convey messages and emotions. This series invites viewers to reflect on the way art communicates through its formal qualities\, as well as its narrative possibilities. The careful interplay of shapes\, colors\, and textures in these works prompts an examination of the viewer's perception and emotional response. By utilizing abstract forms\, Galbreath encourages an engagement that goes beyond mere observation\, seeking to provoke thought about how aesthetic choices influence understanding and meaning.\n\nOn the other hand\, Storyboard is a series of image-driven installation paintings that vary greatly in size\, showcasing Galbreath’s versatility and creative ingenuity. This series highlights the hard-working suppliers of essential products\, including Farm Market Managers\, Fishmongers\, and Beach Vendors. By portraying these self-employed individuals\, often operating within informal economies\, Galbreath draws attention to the unique challenges they face. These individuals frequently contend with low\, inconsistent incomes\, long hours\, and sometimes exploitative conditions\, fostering a sense of solidarity with those who labor under such circumstances.\n\nFurthermore\, the series invites viewers to confront the broader societal structures that contribute to these inequities. Galbreath's work serves not only as a tribute but also as a call to action to consider how our consumer habits and economic policies affect the livelihoods of others. The layered narratives present in this series open a dialogue about the value we place on labor and the often unseen struggles that support our day-to-day lives. DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. Each brushstroke conveys a commitment not only to visual accuracy but also to emotional resonance\, as he strives to encapsulate the spirit of a place that is both loved and contested.\n\nIn addition to these works\, the artist constantly sketches ideas both for paintings and for designing projects in his business. These sketches serve as visual language\, helping him clarify and refine his concepts before bringing them to life. They become a means to communicate ideas to clients and his crew and become an extension of his voice—an academic exercise rooted in artistic practice that fosters collaboration and innovation. The act of sketching also reflects his evolving relationship with the city\, as each drawing encapsulates fleeting moments of inspiration drawn directly from his surroundings. This duality of function—creating art for exhibition and conceptualizing designs for projects—demonstrates Swafford’s versatility and adaptability as an artist.\n\nSwafford received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design\, and while at RISD\, he was part of the European Honors Program. His education not only honed his technical skills but also broadened his artistic perspective through exposure to varied artistic traditions. He has shown his work in both solo and group exhibitions in Chicago\, Kansas City\, and New York State. Each exhibition serves as a testament to his commitment to his craft and his ability to engage diverse audiences\, offering them an opportunity to explore the complex narratives woven into each landscape.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 2): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:\n\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - April 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)\nPhase 3 (May 12 - August 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)\nPhase 2 Curatorial Statement\n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Sally Clegg (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Kim Karlsrud (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtists Sally Clegg and Kim Karlsrud wrap the Division Street pillars in highly site-specific ornament unearthed from the overlooked margins of Ann Arbor. On the Courtyard pillar\, Karlsrud scales up photographs of objects found in liminal spaces surrounding campus buildings on Green Road\, which the artist has encrusted in road salt. On the entryway pillar\, Clegg zooms in on tiny fragments of found material from UMich’s famous “rock” to celebrate nearly seven decades of student art and activism. Both artists uplift aggregate of local human activity to reveal tiny worlds of found form. \n\nSally Clegg: Sentimentary Rock\nSentimentary Rock is a composition of paint slag collected from the UMich rock monument at the corner of Washtenaw Avenue and Hill Street. This colorful composite material has been accumulating at the base of the iconic limestone boulder since the mid 1950’s\, when students began a tradition of painting it in acts of protest\, creativity\, and ritual\, sometimes multiple times per week. Akin to byproducts of industry such as “Fordite” (collectable chunks of automotive overspray sometimes called ‘Detroit agate’)\, Sentimentary Rock includes thousands of layers\, each dripped from a palimpsestic public proclamation. When processed\, sculpted\, sealed\, assembled\, and macro-photographed\, the result is this enlarged array of tiny gems\, intended to celebrate the indissoluble student voice. \n\nKim Karlsrud: What Amasses\nWhat Amasses is an assemblage of everyday found objects collected within the Miller Creek watershed\, an urbanized drainage system that encompasses much of the city of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan campus. Selected objects were immersed in a road salt solution\, allowing delicate crystalline formations to emerge. Road salt is a common material input into these hydrological networks during the winter months and exists in multiple states of refinement\, expression\, coherence\, and fragmentation. Each object was then arranged\, photographed\, and enlarged to recontextualize these materials in ways that invite deeper reflections on how infrastructure and human agency blur notions of the natural and the artificial. \nArtist Statements/Bios\n\nSally Clegg \nSally Clegg is an artist and educator from Pelham\, Massachusetts. Her studio practice is rooted in sculpture and expanded printmaking\, stemming from a fascination with human efforts to make meaning from our relationships to objects. Clegg integrates history\, popular culture\, literature and philosophy as material for artmaking\, leveraging personal anecdote and humor to reveal the complexity\, absurdity\, and theoretical richness at play in our connections to things and to ourselves. \n\nClegg holds an MFA in Art from The University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design\, and a BA in Art & English from Goucher College. She has exhibited nationally and internationally\, and her work can be found in permanent collections at Yale University\, The New York Public Library\, and elsewhere. Her artwork and writing has appeared in ASAP/Journal\, BOMB Magazine\, Sculpture Magazine\, and Hyperallergic. She is a lecturer in Art & Design at the University of Michigan. Through Larry's eyes\, we observe his human family\, and his owner Diana. Larry hides in Diana’s suitcase as she travels to her job on the Moon and experiences weightlessness. Once on the Moon\, Larry observes how the Earth looks a lot like the Moon did from his porch back home.\n\nThe state-of-the-art Planetarium & Dome Theater at the U-M Museum of Natural History transports visitors beyond distant stars and back in time from the comfort of reclining seats. DESCRIPTION:\n\nWhat We Tend: The 2026 MFA Thesis Exhibition is on view at the Stamps Gallery from March 20 — April 11\, 2026. The exhibition presents seven artists whose practices unfold through care—care for land\, for bodies\, for memory\, and for one another. Working across ritual\, non-linear time\, and intersectional inquiries into labor and domestic life\, these artists treat familial\, site-specific\, and sociopolitical histories as living structures rather than sealed archives. What We Tend features the work of MFA students River Forest Berry\, Michelle Cieloszczyk\, Zoë Dong\, Fiona Hoffer\, Michael ​“Modius Modi” King Jr.\, Michaela Nichelle\, and Sujay Saple.\n\nJoin us to celebrate the work of MFA graduate students at the Opening Reception on March 20 from 6 — 8 p.m. Refreshments will be served and artists will be present.\n\nPlease note: \n\nThroughout the exhibition\, visitors are encouraged to bring clean and empty aluminum cans to participate in Michaela Nichelle’s installation. \nThe exhibition will be closed to the public on Friday\, April 10.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nSingapore International shipping underpins the global economy\, moving roughly 90% of world trade by volume across highly integrated global supply chains. At the same time\, the sector emits about 1 Gt CO₂ annually\, or approximately 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions\, with emissions projected to grow alongside trade. Decarbonising shipping is therefore not a peripheral challenge\, but a prerequisite for a net-zero future. Yet shipping’s decarbonisation remains uniquely difficult. Vessels have long operational lifetimes\, energy demand is high\, production of alternatives to fossil fuels remains nascent\, and their deployment must satisfy stringent safety\, operational\, and infrastructure constraints across a global system. In this seminar\, I will discuss the work of the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD)\, an independent action tank based in Singapore established to accelerate progress through large-scale\, pre-competitive pilots. Over the past 4.5 years\, GCMD has worked with more than 130 partners across the maritime value chain to demonstrate the first safe transfer of 2\,700 metric tonnes of ammonia at anchorage in Western Australia\; bunker and trace 3\,400 metric tonnes of biofuels in Singapore and Rotterdam to strengthen supply-chain integrity\; execute the world’s first offloading of onboard-captured and liquefied CO₂ in China\, and subsequently demonstrate its use to recycle steel slag and produce precipitated calcium carbonate\; and launch a US$35 million fund featuring a pay-as-you-save mechanism to accelerate the adoption of energy-efficiency technologies. Insights from these pilots have informed investment decisions\, shaped policy discussions\, and contributed to emerging standards and guidelines. The seminar also reflects on my transition from two decades of nanoscale materials research\, spanning organic semiconductors and perovskite solar cells\, to system-level decarbonisation\, and on how my academic training has shaped my approach to tackling complex\, urgent\, real-world industry challenges.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\nLynn Loo is the Theodora D. ’78 and William H. Walton III ’74 Professor of Engineering at Princeton University and the inaugural CEO of the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD)\, an independent international action tank headquartered in Singapore that is working with industry to accelerate shipping’s transition to low- and zero-carbon solutions.\n\nTrained as a chemical engineer\, Lynn’s work spans fundamental materials science\, technology commercialization\, and systems-scale decarbonization. At Princeton\, her group pioneered see- through solar cells that wirelessly power smart windows to reduce building energy use and improve occupant comfort. This work received the 2020 Thomas Edison Patent Award and is being advanced through Andluca Technologies\, a startup she co-founded.\n\nAt GCMD\, she leads large-scale\, pre-competitive initiatives in real operational and commercial settings\, including the world’s first ship-to-ship transfer of ammonia at anchorage\, biofuel supply-chain trials\, the offloading and utilization of onboard captured and liquefied carbon dioxide\, and the launch of the sector’s first retrofit fund to catalyze uptake of energy-efficiency technologies. GCMD now works with over 130 industry partners globally. A Member of the National Academy of Engineering\, Lynn is a Fellow of AIChE\, APS\, and MRS\, and a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader. She was also featured on Lloyd’s List’s Top 100 People in Shipping list for her influence on the industry’s transition.

Register for the Zoom webinar at https://myumi.ch/79Q63\n   \n   James Marshall Plumer (1899–1960) is remembered as a U-M professor and authority on East Asian ceramics\, best known for identifying the kiln site of Jian (Tenmoku) ware in China. Between 1948 and 1949\, Plumer served as Fine Arts Advisor to the General Headquarters of the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers\, traveling around Japan to assess the condition of cultural properties. During the trips\, he collected Mingei (Folk Art Movement) pottery\, images of folk deities\, and Ainu objects\, which later became part of the University of Michigan Museum of Art’s (UMMA) holdings. Drawing upon these objects and his personal diaries\, this talk examines Plumer’s collecting journey and highlights his legacy as an advocate of Japanese art and influential cultural leader in the immediate postwar period.\n   \n   Natsu Oyobe\, Ph.D.\, is curator of Asian art at the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA). Specializing in modern and contemporary Japanese art\, she has curated numerous art exhibitions\, including *Isamu Noguchi and Qi Baishi: Beijing 1930* (2013) and *Clay as Soft Power: Shigaraki Ware in Postwar America and Japan* (2022). DESCRIPTION:University Carillonist Tiffany Ng performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

DESCRIPTION:In place of a regular recital\, the public is welcome to visit and observe as students take a lesson on the carillon led by Prof. Tiffany Ng.\n\nThe Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon is an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.

DESCRIPTION:Pinar Keskinocak is the H. Milton and Carolyn J. Stewart School Chair and Professor in the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE) at Georgia Tech. She is the co-founder and Director of the Center for Health and Humanitarian Systems (CHHS). Previously\, she served as Associate Chair for Faculty Development in ISyE\, College of Engineering ADVANCE Professor\, and Interim Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Scholarship.\n\nHer research spans supply chain management and applications in health and humanitarian systems\, with a multidisciplinary\, multi-stakeholder perspective. Recent work has focused on disease modeling\, evaluating interventions\, resource allocation\, process improvement for healthcare delivery\, and disaster preparedness\, response\, and recovery. Her research has appeared in leading journals and has been supported by government agencies\, industry\, NGOs\, and foundations.\n\nHer leadership and service within Georgia Tech\, professional communities\, and nationwide have been extensive\, including serving as President of INFORMS.  Dr. Keskinocak is a Fellow of INFORMS and IISE. She is the recipient of the INFORMS President’s Award (2024)\, George E. Kimball Medal (2024)\, Women in Operations Research and Management Science Award.\n\nInfectious diseases continue to affect millions of people around the world.  Pharmaceutical or non-pharmaceutical interventions such as testing\, vaccines\, or treatments help control their spread.   Resources for the deployment of interventions are often limited\, and decisions regarding what\, when\, and how to deploy need to incorporate various short- and long-term considerations\, as well as human behaviors.  In this presentation\, we will illustrate these challenges using a few examples from infectious diseases that are targeted for elimination or eradication\, and share results from modeling studies to help inform these complex decisions.

DESCRIPTION:Convergence of light\, devices\, and molecules to detect and treat cancer\n\nAbstract:\nSurgeons traditionally rely on vision and touch to distinguish cancerous from healthy tissue\, which risks incomplete tumor removal. To enhance precision\, we developed Cancer Viewing Glasses (CVGs) that provide real-time intraoperative visualization of tumors and sentinel lymph nodes without disrupting the surgical workflow. CVGs detect near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) from tumor-targeted molecular probes and project both NIRF and visible light to a head-mounted display\, enabling direct access to the surgical field under normal lighting conditions. In both mouse models and cancer patients\, CVGs enabled real-time image guidance for complete tumor resection\, with ongoing clinical studies demonstrating improved surgical throughput and accuracy.     \n\nBio:\nDr. Samuel Achilefu is the inaugural Chair and Professor of the Biomedical Engineering Department at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas\, Texas\, USA. He also holds the Lyda Hill Distinguished University Chair and is a Professor of Radiology and the Simons Cancer Center. He is an international leader in optical and multimodal imaging\, image-guided cancer surgery\, portable imaging devices\, and nanotechnology. His innovative research and more than 70 U.S. patents have significantly contributed to laboratory and clinical medicine. Dr. Achilefu is a member of the National Academies of Engineering and Medicine. He is also a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors\, AAAS\, AIMBE\, and many other professional societies. He has received over 20 national and international awards\, including the Briton Chance Award.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IES Energy Seminar Series - Global copper demand outstrips supply\, threatening electrification and industrial growth
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nCopper is arguably the most important metal for economic development and energy scenarios because it is essential for manufacture and deployment of low-carbon electricity generation\, transmission and storage\, and vehicle electrification. Copper is also essential for modern economies because it is required for expansion of infrastructure such as wiring for electricity distribution and telecommunications\, air conditioning and space heating\, plumbing\, industrial equipment\, rail and public transportation systems\, and vehicles. Consider that the built environment of the European Union\, United Kingdom\, United States and other high-income countries contains 150-200 kg/capita\, whereas there is less than 10 kg/capita in low-income countries across Africa and India. Hence\, global economic development will require an enormous amount of copper. Our challenge is that this copper demand is significantly greater than projected copper supply. Copper production from existing mines will decrease over the next few decades because due to announced mine closures and decreasing ore grades\, and the discovery of new copper occurrences that can be mined continues to decline. The dearth of discovery of new copper occurrences indicates that available exploration methods are no longer successful. In this presentation I will discuss novel hydrogeochemical methods that use the metal isotopic composition of ground and surface water as a probe for the presence of copper sulfide minerals beneath cover. The technique was developed by collaborating with mining companies around the world. The non-invasive technique can identify and distinguish among chalcopyrite\, chalcocite and bornite and whether chalcocite is hypogene or supergene. The technique can be used for brownfield expansion projects and greenfield exploration. The hydrogeochemical technique can also be used to monitor mineralogy during heap leaching operations\, allowing operators to tailor lixiviant chemistry to increase production rates and total recovery. The technique can also be used to quantitatively determine the source(s) of metals in the environment.\n\nBiography:\nAdam C. Simon is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Mineral Resources at the University of Michigan\, and a co-founder of VectOres Science\, Inc.\, a consulting company that uses patented technology for mineral exploration and processing. His research focuses on mineral exploration\, ore deposit genesis\, the integration of geological and geochemical data to understand ore formation\, and the use of metal isotopes to monitor mineralogy in heap leaching operations and tracing environmental metal sources. He has worked on a range of mineral deposits: porphyry\, epithermal\, Carlin-type\, iron oxide-copper-gold\, iron oxide-apatite\, layered mafic intrusions\, and magmatic sulfide. Adam has led research programs on all seven continents. He co-authored the books Mineral Resources\, Economics and the Environment\, and Earth Materials: Components of a Diverse Planet. He has published 125 scientific articles and has received awards for his transformative approaches to education and. He was the global 2024 Society of Economic Geologists Distinguished Lecturer and regularly gives presentations to general and expert audiences on all aspects of energy and mineral resources.

DESCRIPTION:\"Unraveling hierarchical galaxy formation: the potential of galaxy stellar halos beyond the Milky Way\"\n\nStellar halos are amazingly rich records of their host galaxy’s history. During the hierarchical galaxy formation process smaller galaxies and star clusters are stripped apart in the outskirts of their larger hosts\, leaving their stars as tracers of their origin. This tidal debris survives as stellar streams and substructures and is sensitive to the underlying gravitational potential\, providing constraints on the nature of dark matter and the physics of low-mass galaxy formation. Upcoming large surveys such as those from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory\, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope\, and Euclid will provide an unprecedented deep and wide view of this low-surface brightness discovery space\, detecting stellar halo substructure for numerous galaxies in our nearby universe. Modeling of stellar halo structures has traditionally focused on our own Milky Way\, with limited exploration of diverse galaxy formation histories. In this talk I will highlight how using a variety of modeling techniques can aid in understanding how physical processes in hierarchical galaxy formation link to observational signatures\, facilitating interpretation of observations by the next generation of telescopes. Additionally\, I will briefly discuss ongoing interdisciplinary work\, among other things in AI models for strong lens modeling\, at the Astro-AI Institute for the Sky—the SkAI Institute.

DESCRIPTION:Seminar Summary - Coastal wetlands in the Great Lakes face a suite of interacting stressors\, and understanding the processes that drive plant performance and invasive species dynamics is essential for improving restoration outcomes. My research aims to refine coastal wetland restoration strategies by investigating the mechanistic processes that govern ecosystem health and recovery. I work closely with land managers to incorporate this mechanistic context into decision‑making and on‑the‑ground practice. I will share my work examining the mechanisms underlying invasive plant control—from the physiological responses of Phragmites to treatment through the shifts in soil and microbial communities that follow management—as well as my investigations into how site conditions and microbial interactions influence native plant germination\, vigor\, stress tolerance\, and reestablishment during restoration. This work is tightly linked to partner needs intended to strengthen restoration approaches and enhance the long‑term resilience of Great Lakes wetlands.

DESCRIPTION:Let $q\,Q$ be two integral quadratic forms in $m < n$ variables. One can ask when $q$ can be represented by $Q$ - that is\, whether there exists an $n \times m$-integer matrix $T$ such that $Q \circ T = q$. Naturally\, a necessary condition is that such a representation exists locally\, meaning over the real numbers and modulo $N$ for every positive integer $N$. In the absence of local obstructions\, does a (global) representation of $q$ by $Q$ exist? This question is particularly delicate when the codimension $n-m$ is small\, with codimension $2$ being the most challenging.\n\nIn this second talk\, we discuss joint work with Wooyeon Kim and Pengyu Yang where we establish a local-global principle for representations of binary by quaternary quadratic forms (when $m=2$ and $n=4$) . Our proof uses a recent measure rigidity result of Einsiedler and Lindenstrauss for higher-rank diagonalizable actions on homogeneous spaces combined with soft methods in number theory. Both talks are aimed at a general dynamical audience.\n\nNote that Wieser will give a more introductory talk in the RTG Geometry\, Topology\, Dynamics on Wednesday.

DESCRIPTION:Interfaces play critical roles in governing chemical reactivity across many systems ranging from fuel cells to batteries to atmospheric aerosols\, yet the molecular-level processes occurring at these boundaries remain poorly understood. This talk will highlight how spatially resolved techniques can provide detailed insights into two complex interfacial environments. In the first part of this talk\, I will discuss how combining spatially resolved electrochemistry with complementary scanning probe methods reveals which sites in transition-metal dichalcogenides are electrocatalytically active and why. In the second part\, I will show how confocal fluorescence microscopy can measure how molecules localize\, orient\, and react at gas–liquid interfaces\, providing a molecular picture of interfacial reactivity.

DESCRIPTION:The Annual KASA Culture Show is Happening @ Michigan! \n6:30-9PM April 2nd\, 2026 @ Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre\, Michigan League. \n\nThe Korean American Student Association Culture Show is a highly anticipated annual not-for-profit event that draws an audience of around 300 guests. It showcases various student organizations student organizations and performance groups aiming to promote authentic Korean culture through traditional and modern art forms. Korean drama\, music\, dance\, and food are crucial elements to the representation of Korean culture\, and our culture show provides students with the opportunity to present their culture and passions through different types of performances including traditional and modern Korean dance\, Korean drum performances\, and Taekwondo. \n\nOur Culture Show performers this year include Seoul Juice\, Sinaboro\, KASAmble\, MOLI\, UM Taekwondo\, FunKtion\, DB3\, K-motion\, and Female Gayo. Additionally\, the show will feature this year’s KASA student-produced parody of the iconic South Korean film Oldboy. \n\nThe culture show is the culmination of the hard work and effort of students\, who\, despite coming from diverse backgrounds\, have united through their passion and interest in Korean culture.

DESCRIPTION:TBTN Ann Arbor is our main event and though part of its focus is bringing awareness to the issue of sexual violence to campus and the community\, its primary focus is to support survivors by providing a safe space of healing and empowerment and providing an avenue for organizations to share their resources. \n\nIt will be held on Thursday\, April 2nd\, 2026\, in the Michigan Union Ballroom on the 2nd floor.   Doors will open at 6:30 pm and the rally will start at about 7 pm. It runs approximately 90 minutes. The march will be immediately following through the streets of campus and Ann Arbor. The event is open to the public and free of charge.  This year’s theme is Your Story Matters. \n\nWe are very excited to announce our feature speaker will be Jena-Lisa Jones.  Jena-Lisa is an Epstein survivor and co-founder of the non-profit The Survivor which is a national organization dedicated to helping sexual assault victims by offering resource services and support.
