SUMMARY:Exhibition:'Redefining the Crown' Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you? DESCRIPTION:Making Armenian Americans  \nCurators: Michael Pifer (U-M| MES) and Kathryn Babayan (U-M|History)\nProject Save Photograph Archive/Archive Alive Project\n\nMaking Armenian Americans invites viewers into a moment of possibility in the early 20th century\, when Armenians fleeing violence at the end of the Ottoman Empire came to reinvent themselves in the promise of America. Drawn from the archives of Project Save\, these photographs capture different valences of American life\, as experienced\, performed\, and imagined by Armenian immigrants. From naturalization classes to festivals of nations\, from breaking new ground for churches to mundane tableaus of Thanksgiving and Christmas\, this range of photographs offers a glimpse of a community in the making\, one that sought to preserve a memory of its Ottoman past even while anticipating an American future.

Featuring handcrafted pieces from cities such as Hama\, Aleppo\, Homs\, and Saraqib\, the exhibit highlights textile practices that reflect identity\, memory\, and cultural continuity. Many of these traditions are increasingly at risk of disappearing\, making preservation efforts especially urgent. \n\nThis exhibit\, on display in the rotunda of the Clark Library\, follows a live presentation held on March 30 and offers you an opportunity to engage with Syrian textile heritage as both an artistic and historical narrative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World
DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. There are also activities for young visitors.\n\nThe museum is open to the public every Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.\n\nFull details about the exhibit\, including parking instructions and how to book a free private group tour on a weekday\, are available at http://michmed.org/museum\n\nThe museum has an accessible entrance at the rear of the building.

Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. DESCRIPTION:Danielle Belen\, professor in the Department of Strings\, is the recipient of the 2025 Harold Haugh Award for excellence in studio teaching. This award is named in honor of Haugh\, former professor of music and leading oratorio soloist. Belen has an extraordinary record of student success and in the spirit of this award\, her musical program will celebrate the shared joy of artistry\, performance\, and pedagogy. Free and open to the public.\n\nDREAMING IN DOUBLE STOPS\n\nThe title of this lecture recital reflects Professor Belen’s passionate dedication to the intersection of violin technique and elite musicianship through teaching and research. Double stops are a foundational violin technique in which two strings are bowed simultaneously\, creating a rich resonance and blend of sound. While technically demanding\, they can unlock freedom on the instrument and enable the highest levels of intonation and expression.\n\nEtudes and exercises focused on double stops have existed for centuries\, and etude collections from the 1800’s remain central to violin pedagogy today. This raises an intriguing question: could there be a new etude book written in the compositional language of our time?\n\nThe centerpiece of this evening will be the presentation of a multi-phase collaborative etude project between Professor Belen\, her studio of SMTD violinists\, and Grammy Award–winning composer Jessie Montgomery. Through performances and discussion of the creative process behind these works\, the project explores what modern technical studies might look – and sound – like today.\n\nFACULTY BIO\n\nProfessor of Violin at the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance in Ann Arbor\, DANIELLE BELEN is already making a name for herself as a seasoned pedagogue with a strong studio of young artists. Her students have won major prizes in national and international competitions including the Menuhin\, Stulberg and Klein competitions\, as well as being accepted into major conservatories and universities. Alumni from her studio play in symphonies across the country\, including the Colorado\, Cincinnati\, Detroit and San Francisco Symphonies\, the LA Opera and San Francisco Ballet Orchestras\, and internationally in Norway and Finland. \n\nWinner of the 2008 Sphinx Competition\, Ms. Belen has appeared as a soloist with the Pittsburgh\, Atlanta\, Nashville and San Francisco Symphonies\, the Boston Pops\, and the Florida and Cleveland Orchestras. Zachary Lewis from the Cleveland *Plain Dealer* wrote \"Violinist Danielle Belen... captivated every ear with an assured\, impassioned performance of Ravel's 'Tzigane\,' knocking off the daunting showpiece as if it were a trifle.\"\n\nMs. Belen released her debut Naxos recording of works by living composer Lawrence Dillon in 2009 to much acclaim. Soon after\, she commissioned \"Multiplicity\"\, a piece by Dillon for six virtuoso violins which she premiered along with her students.\n\nA graduate of the USC Thornton School of Music and the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles\, Ms. Belen joined the faculty of the Colburn School in 2008. In addition to maintaining her own violin studio\, she was the teaching assistant to renowned pedagogue Robert Lipsett. During that time\, Ms. Belen also served as the Director of the Ed and Mari Chamber Music Institute at the Colburn School of Performing Arts. \n\nIn 2010\, Ms. Belen founded Center Stage Strings\, a summer camp and performance festival for gifted young musicians in central California. After gaining national attention\, CSS moved to the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor as part of MPulse\, a summer program at the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance. As the Artistic Director and head of the violin faculty\, she has attracted students and seasoned artists from around the world. Lynn Harrell\, James Ehnes\, Arnold Steinhardt\, Sarah Chang\, William Hagen\, Rohan de Silva and Stefan Jackiw have joined to perform in support of the program.\n\nAs the winner of the 2014 Sphinx Medal of Excellence\, Ms. Belen performed for Justice Sonia Sotomayor and her guests at the Supreme Court in Washington DC\, where she was awarded a $50\,000 career grant. In turn\, she used that money towards a matching campaign for Center Stage Strings\, doubling the amount into $100\,000 for student scholarships.\n\nHer passion for pedagogy can be seen in her vibrant and unique teaching style\, made accessible through a host of videos available to the public through her YouTube Channel and Social Media. Ms. Belen plays on a violin made in Mantua\, Italy by Stefano Scarampella.
