For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. The tableaus—which often include live animals\, props\, even her parents—are then photographed\, documenting the artist’s process. Each photograph becomes a part of Soleimani’s rich visual storytelling. \n\n*Flyways *presents a series of new photographs that include images evocative of her family’s history and migration story in juxtaposition with images of injured birds that are representative of Soleimani’s work as a wildlife rehabilitator. (In 2018\, Soleimani founded Congress of Birds\, a wild bird rehabilitation center in Rhode Island.) In terms of evolutionary time\, these species flocks are incredibly young\, and many instances of diversification appear to have occurred in sympatry rather than allopatry\, leading to incomplete lineage sorting. The difficulty disentangling species relationships in this subfamily has been termed the ‘coregonine problem’ and has severely limited the ability of scientists and managers to draw robust conclusions regarding best practices for their conservation and restoration. This is particularly vital in the Laurentian Great Lakes\, where overfishing\, habitat degradation\, and the introduction of invasive species in the 20th century led to precipitous declines in the largest documented radiation of coregonines in North America\, the Coregonus artedi species complex. Many of these impacts have been mitigated in recent decades\, and interest in restoring lost populations of these important prey fishes is growing\, calling for a better understanding of relationships between members of this species complex. In this talk\, I will discuss how we are leveraging new genomic tools to elucidate historic and contemporary differentiation and to explore the mechanisms of divergence in the Great Lakes C. artedi species complex in support of on-going conservation and restoration efforts.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nAmanda Ackiss is a Fish Biologist at the US Geological Survey’s Great Lakes Science Center in Ann Arbor\, MI. She earned her B.A. in Media Studies at the University of Virginia before pivoting back to the field of science and earning her Ph.D. in Ecological Sciences at Old Dominion University. During her Ph.D. she gained expertise in molecular ecology\, genomics\, and bioinformatics studying the diversity of fishes in the Coral Triangle region of southeast Asia before accepting a postdoctoral research position at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point that introduced her to the cisco species complex of the Great Lakes. This is true even for “non-photonic” quantum systems based on superconductors\, or trapped atoms and ions in vacuum. For example\, new types of spatial light modulators and switches are needed to trap and control atoms and ions\, microwave to optical quantum transducers are needed for networking superconducting processors\, chip-scale laser systems are required for controlling atoms or spin qubits in solids\, and very high efficiency integrated photonics is needed for quantum networks\, sensors\, and chip-based semiconductor quantum systems. Unfortunately\, the desired level of performance and some of the functionalities are not available even in today’s best integrated photonics. We show how this can be addressed by photonics inverse design combined with emerging materials\, new nanofabrication and heterogenous integration approaches. Specific examples include development of miniaturized titanium:sapphire lasers and amplifiers on chip\, quantum network nodes in diamond\, and a quantum simulator with silicon carbide color centers. The period features the advent and rapid di!usion of a major new seeding technique\, zero tillage\, whose use expanded from zero percent of cultivated land in 1986 to 60 percent by 2006. We document substantial technology adoption\, land consolidation\, and productivity growth\, facilitated by an economic environment characterized by relatively high allocative e”ciency\, whereby more productive farms operate at a larger scale. Empirically\, we find that adopting zero-tillage raises farm-level productivity substantially. Through quantitative analysis\, we estimate that zero-tillage adoption accounts for roughly 30 percent of the near doubling of agricultural productivity over the period and 45–70 percent of the observed structural transformation. We show that high allocative e”ciency was crucial for the widespread adoption of technology\, which would have nearly disappeared with correlated distortions commonly documented in developing countries. We also show that technological progress can be a powerful driver of catch-up growth in developing economies with low correlated distortions. In this talk\, I explore how long-term land-use legacies (“press” disturbances) compare to hurricane impacts (“pulse” disturbances) in shaping soil microbial functioning in Puerto Rico. I show that land-use legacies have stronger and more persistent effects on soil conditions\, enzyme activity\, and nutrient cycling than more recent hurricane disturbance. In contrast\, microbial functioning was largely similar between hurricane-disturbed and undisturbed soils\, suggesting resilience to episodic events. These results highlight the lasting impact of human land use and suggest that legacy effects may play a larger role than natural disturbances in shaping ecosystem responses to global change. Yet much research on stratification treats families as unified actors that collectively pass resources to the next generation\, overlooking how parents actually allocate resources among their children. Using family fixed‑effects models and data from the Health and Retirement Study\, we examine how inter vivos transfers and bequests are distributed within families. We find that children who receive more financial support during their parents’ lifetimes are also more likely to receive a bequest and a larger one. Rather than compensating for earlier imbalances\, bequests appear to amplify existing inequalities among siblings. These findings highlight key mechanisms in the reproduction of advantage and offer insights for policies seeking to reduce wealth inequality across generations. \n\nBiography\nAdriana Reyes is an Assistant Professor of Public Policy and Sociology at Cornell University. Leveraging a novel dataset of county-pair transport costs\, we utilize time-\, region-\, and direction-specific freight rates and newly digitized road network to understand how declining transit costs reshaped the agrarian landscape and agricultural production. These data allow for a rigorous evaluation of what we can call an antebellum \"place-based\" transport policies and their heterogeneous effects on antebellum regions. We use minimum spanning tree approach to construct a plausibly exogenous transportation network which is used to assess the causal impact of transportation infrastructure on antebellum agriculture.\n \nOur first set of findings reveal that the impact of canal construction was not uniform\, showing considerable variation across different geographic regions. Notably\, in the Middle Atlantic\, the introduction of canals catalyzed a significant reallocation of resources away from wheat production\, signalling a shift in comparative advantage. While canals laid the groundwork\, railroads exerted the most transformative influence during the 1850s. In the final decade preceding the Civil War\, the expansion of the rail network drove a broad reallocation away from traditional grain production\, as improved connectivity facilitated deeper market integration and specialization. By accounting for the nuances of freight directionality and regional specificity\, this study provides new evidence on how infrastructure-led cost reductions altered land use and productivity patterns in the nineteenth-century U.S. economy. In many cases\, performance can be improved by fine-tuning bulk microporosity\, yet factors affecting this key property remain poorly understood. This seminar describes efforts to identify how synthetic pathways shape microporosity in amorphous porous networks. Using a network disassembly approach\, we show that pathway-dependent porosity is largely driven by defects arising from incomplete cross-linking.
