For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. By paying attention to the level of individuals-- who married whom\, conducted business with whom\, contracted business with\, and sued whom-- I explore how Sephardi Jews operated within a series of overlapping diasporas that intersected at key moments with others of Ottoman or Jewish backgrounds and diverged at others. These migrants often drew on similar tactics to sustain diasporic networks-- hypermobility\, multilinguality\, transnational connections\, strong familial ties\, patronage networks\, and engagement with extralegal practices. The non-independence of trait values is obvious from two common observations: 1) traits function modularly within body plans to create interacting units\, and 2) traits show evolutionary conservatism across closely related taxa\, varying far more in size than in shape along allometric lines. However\, different mechanisms generating covariance can produce the same patterns of trait distribution across species\, so the relative impact of evolutionary\, developmental\, or genetic constraints versus adaptive evolution in phenotypic change is critical for understanding the morphological diversity we observe in the world around us. In this dissertation\, I explored how the evolutionary relationships between traits have shifted across different phylogenetic scales\, with a focus on limb reduction and body elongation as major body plan changes in squamate reptiles (lizards and snakes). Squamates have evolved limb-reduced\, elongate body plans an estimated 26-50 independent times\, making them a powerful system to test hypotheses about trait evolution. First\, I investigated how the multivariate evolutionary process\, as described by the evolutionary variance-covariance matrix\, shifts between and within two clades of scincid lizard. I found that although the two clades had similar covariance matrices\, a genus of Australian lizards (Ctenotus) had a distinct evolutionary covariance structure\, indicating that these evolutionary relationships can change at relatively short timescales. Next\, I tested how limb reduction influences evolutionary integration within and between the limb girdles in lizards. I found that it decreased evolutionary integration\, supporting the hypothesis that reduction and loss of function results in more independent evolution of traits. I suggested that developmental integration may mediate this reduction in evolutionary integration. Finally\, I collected a large dataset of vertebral counts across lizards and snakes to test the relationship between body size and vertebral number (termed pleomerism). I found that non-elongate clades had no pleomerism and although most elongate clades showed pleomerism\, several elongate clades upset the predicted pattern of coupling between body size and vertebral number. This result showed that well-established patterns do not necessarily apply in all groups and that clade heterogeneity must be considered in studies of trait evolution in large groups. Long before the Morrill Act\, institutions such as the University of Michigan relied on land appropriated through treaties to finance operations\, expand campuses\, and diversify educational opportunities for students. At the same time\, public domain land was being used for internal improvements\, with universities serving as part of this larger project of development. The Morrill Act extended and formalized these practices\, redistributing millions of acres of Indigenous land to fund the expansion of higher education across the United States. Historically\, federal officials pressured tribes in Michigan to agree to the extinction of Native title to their lands\, even when there was no immediate demand for those lands. This meant not only that tribes were deprived of a valuable asset\, but also that this asset was able to appreciate in value until such time as it was sold by the state. In order to convince Native peoples to sign these treaties\, the 1836 Washington and 1855 Detroit treaties guaranteed Native peoples the right to hunt\, fish\, and harvest on ceded territory not yet converted into private property. Reinforcing the enduring relevance of treaties across time\, this panel will focus on the protests\, activism\, and legal battles that have emerged over Indigenous resource rights in Michigan\, all of which revolve around differing interpretations of land and treaties. Our approach does not require observing full dynamic state information (as is typically assumed for off-policy evaluation in Markov decision processes)\, and does not incur an exponential curse of horizon (as is typical in non-Markovian off-policy evaluation). We demonstrate practicality and robustness of our approach in a number of simulations\, including one motivated by a dynamic pricing application where people use past prices to form a reference level for current prices. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). On the Courtyard pillar\, Karlsrud scales up photographs of objects found in liminal spaces surrounding campus buildings on Green Road\, which the artist has encrusted in road salt. On the entryway pillar\, Clegg zooms in on tiny fragments of found material from UMich’s famous “rock” to celebrate nearly seven decades of student art and activism. Both artists uplift aggregate of local human activity to reveal tiny worlds of found form. \n\nSally Clegg: Sentimentary Rock\nSentimentary Rock is a composition of paint slag collected from the UMich rock monument at the corner of Washtenaw Avenue and Hill Street. This colorful composite material has been accumulating at the base of the iconic limestone boulder since the mid 1950’s\, when students began a tradition of painting it in acts of protest\, creativity\, and ritual\, sometimes multiple times per week. Akin to byproducts of industry such as “Fordite” (collectable chunks of automotive overspray sometimes called ‘Detroit agate’)\, Sentimentary Rock includes thousands of layers\, each dripped from a palimpsestic public proclamation. When processed\, sculpted\, sealed\, assembled\, and macro-photographed\, the result is this enlarged array of tiny gems\, intended to celebrate the indissoluble student voice. \n\nKim Karlsrud: What Amasses\nWhat Amasses is an assemblage of everyday found objects collected within the Miller Creek watershed\, an urbanized drainage system that encompasses much of the city of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan campus. Selected objects were immersed in a road salt solution\, allowing delicate crystalline formations to emerge. Road salt is a common material input into these hydrological networks during the winter months and exists in multiple states of refinement\, expression\, coherence\, and fragmentation. Each object was then arranged\, photographed\, and enlarged to recontextualize these materials in ways that invite deeper reflections on how infrastructure and human agency blur notions of the natural and the artificial. \nArtist Statements/Bios\n\nSally Clegg \nSally Clegg is an artist and educator from Pelham\, Massachusetts. Her studio practice is rooted in sculpture and expanded printmaking\, stemming from a fascination with human efforts to make meaning from our relationships to objects. Clegg integrates history\, popular culture\, literature and philosophy as material for artmaking\, leveraging personal anecdote and humor to reveal the complexity\, absurdity\, and theoretical richness at play in our connections to things and to ourselves. \n\nClegg holds an MFA in Art from The University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design\, and a BA in Art & English from Goucher College. She has exhibited nationally and internationally\, and her work can be found in permanent collections at Yale University\, The New York Public Library\, and elsewhere. The average loan size in this segment is about $20\,000 USD (5x GDP per capita). 50 bank branches employing 550 lending staff are randomly assigned to one of the following treatments: (1) a monthly multi-category contest\; (2) a piece-rate incentive per loan\; or (3) control. The multi-category contest is inclusive in that it rewards not just the very top performing agents\, but also top performers among new agents (“rookies”) and most improved performers. We find that\, overall\, both interventions cause an increase in WSME lending\, particularly in later periods\, at largely similar magnitudes. In terms of spillovers\, there may be moderate negative impacts on non-WSME lending early in the treatment period\, but over time there is a significant\, positive spillover on non-WSME lending. Our results have the potential to inform policies to promote (W)SME lending through optimizing loan officer incentives. More broadly\, they provide some of the first experimental evidence from a high-stakes\, real-world setting on whether competitive or piece rate incentives better improve the performance of high-skill workers completing uncertain tasks.\n\nMarkus Taussig’s research and teaching focus on international business and strategy\, with a focus on emerging economies—especially those in Southeast Asia. Dewji joined Georgia Tech following three years as faculty at Texas A&M University in the Department of Nuclear Engineering\, and as a Faculty Fellow of the Center for Nuclear Security Science and Policy Initiatives (NSSPI).\n\nIn her prior role at Oak Ridge National Laboratory\, Dewji was Radiological Scientist in the Center for Radiation Protection Knowledge\, where her work included assessment of patient release criteria for nuclear medicine patients\, as well as development of dose coefficients associated with the external exposure and internal uptake of radionuclides associated with the external exposure and internal uptake of radionuclides in applications of emergency response\, defense\, nuclear medicine\, long duration space travel\, and occupational/public safety. Prior\, Dr. Dewji spent five productive years with the Safeguards and Security Technology Group at ORNL as a Nondestructive Assay Systems Engineer\, focusing on nuclear material measurement of uranium enrichment\, holdup (MUF/ID)\, and signature analysis. Dr. Dewji completed her Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Nuclear and Radiological Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta\, GA and was a fellow of the Sam Nunn Security Program. Contradictory theoretical perspectives exist on this seemingly intuitive question. While social role theory and the theory of circumscription and compromise suggest that greater parity in society leads to smaller psychological differences between genders\, gender-essentialist perspectives suggest the opposite. Over the last decade\, a stream of cross-cultural studies supported the latter with paradoxical findings that greater societal gender equality is associated with larger\, not smaller\, gender differences in preferences\, attitudes\, and behavioral patterns at the individual level. In this talk\, I discuss key limitations in previous studies and challenge the so-called “gender equality paradox” by presenting findings from multilevel modeling with data on the career interests of 21 million U.S. individuals across 50 states over a 17-year time span. I demonstrate divergence in the cross-level effects at the within- and between-state levels\, with different gender equality indicators\, and across various interest dimensions. This work helps reconcile conflicting theories and empirical findings and offer new and more nuanced insights into policies and interventions aiming at closing gender gaps. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. To address this question\, we investigate the long-time behavior of optimal mixing in an advection--diffusion equation using a shell model framework\, a reduced model that captures the essential kinematics of advection and diffusion. Our focus is on quantifying the decay of scalar variance\, measured by the shell-model analogue of the $H^{-1}$ mix-norm\, under enstrophy-constrained stirring. We perform long-time computations using both local-in-time (maximizing the instantaneous mixing rate) and global-in-time (maximizing mixedness at a prescribed final time) optimization strategies. For mixing with diffusion ($\kappa>0$)\, the numerical results for both strategies show that the scalar length scale is eventually limited by a generalized Batchelor scale\, in close agreement with theoretical predictions. In this regime\, the shell-model analogue of the $H^{-1}$ mix-norm decays exponentially in time at a rate independent of the diffusivity $\kappa$. Compared with the purely advective case ($\kappa=0$)\, diffusion significantly enhances the long-time mixing rate\; moreover\, increasing diffusivity further improves mixing efficiency by reducing the prefactor. Guided by these numerical observations\, we derive new conditional lower bounds on the decay rate of the $H^{-1}$ norm that are strictly independent of the diffusivity parameter $\kappa$ when $\kappa>0$. Working in the geodesic approximation\, we find analytic continuations that probe the interior of rotating and charged black holes. These generate contributions from timelike geodesics that thread the interior and emerge in a future universe. We implement these continuations on the momentum space two-point function and exemplify this in several black hole backgrounds. We also identify position space analytic continuations achieving the same task that incorporate different continued momentum space correlators. These correspond to non-perturbative corrections to the WKB approximation. We demonstrate this explicitly in the rotating BTZ black hole by showing that the interior geodesics contribute to the continued position space correlator and motivate a picture for how these contributions arise in higher dimensions. For AdS Schwarzschild\, we identify the analytically continued solution that captures the bouncing geodesic. We discuss the possibility of using these continuations to probe the instability of inner horizons from the boundary. However\, the biogenicity of ancient\, laminated structures has remained a persistent subject of debate. Chemical biosignatures offer an additional and independent means of evaluating biogenicity\, but their interpretation requires careful parameterization in well-constrained\, actively accreting microbialite deposits. In this presentation\, I will present our new conceptual model for microbialite growth and accretion and demonstrate how it improves interpretation of the chemical composition of living microbialites from Hamelin Pool in Shark Bay\, Western Australia. Here\, four types of surface mats accrete microbialites with a range of morphologies including microbial sediments\, unlithified sheet mats\, and discrete microbial buildups. New measurements of microbialite elemental composition and stable carbon isotope ratios will be contextualized by complementary analyses of sediment and seawater from Hamelin Pool. Results demonstrate the important roles of microbialite accretion mechanism\, fabric\, and morphology in governing microbialite composition and chemistry\, providing a modern benchmark for interpreting chemical biosignatures in the ancient geological record. Beyond the 10 minutes of performing\, and the 400+ pages of writing\, there is still so much left unwritten…\n\n*Of Something I Left Behind*\, choreographed by Ava Menzel\, investigates time as something felt rather than measured.
