For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. Galbreath’s work has been showcased locally\, nationally and internationally in over 20 solo/two person and over 100 group exhibitions.\n\nGalbreath has an M.F.A. from the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art\, Art History\, & Design\, Wayne State University\, Detroit\, MI\; and a B.F.A. with Permanent K-12 Certification from The Gwen Frostic School of Art\, Western MI University\, Kalamazoo\, MI. Galbreath has chaperoned eleven intensive\, immersive art experiences to Italy\, Spain\, France\, Belgium\, England\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, Austria\, and the Czech Republic. Lynn is a retired Adjunct Associate Professor of Studio Art from Oakland University\, where she has been on the faculty of the Department of Art & Art History since 2000. By portraying these self-employed individuals\, often operating within informal economies\, Galbreath draws attention to the unique challenges they face. These individuals frequently contend with low\, inconsistent incomes\, long hours\, and sometimes exploitative conditions\, fostering a sense of solidarity with those who labor under such circumstances.\n\nFurthermore\, the series invites viewers to confront the broader societal structures that contribute to these inequities. Galbreath's work serves not only as a tribute but also as a call to action to consider how our consumer habits and economic policies affect the livelihoods of others. This approach\, born of a direct engagement with the subject and the fleeting nature of the scene\, along with his wet-on-wet technique\, keeps the work fresh and immediate. By immersing himself in the environment\, Swafford captures the diverse textures and vibrant colors that characterize Detroit’s landscape\, imbuing his work with a sense of urgency and spontaneity. Each brushstroke conveys a commitment not only to visual accuracy but also to emotional resonance\, as he strives to encapsulate the spirit of a place that is both loved and contested.\n\nIn addition to these works\, the artist constantly sketches ideas both for paintings and for designing projects in his business. These sketches serve as visual language\, helping him clarify and refine his concepts before bringing them to life. They become a means to communicate ideas to clients and his crew and become an extension of his voice—an academic exercise rooted in artistic practice that fosters collaboration and innovation. The act of sketching also reflects his evolving relationship with the city\, as each drawing encapsulates fleeting moments of inspiration drawn directly from his surroundings. This duality of function—creating art for exhibition and conceptualizing designs for projects—demonstrates Swafford’s versatility and adaptability as an artist.\n\nSwafford received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design\, and while at RISD\, he was part of the European Honors Program. His education not only honed his technical skills but also broadened his artistic perspective through exposure to varied artistic traditions. The Wagnon laboratory is interested in understanding genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying DEE and identifying new treatment strategies for these severe disorders. Our current studies focus on DEE caused by variants in the neuronal voltage-gated sodium channel gene SCN8A. We are developing mouse models of SCN8A encephalopathy to study pathogenesis of seizures and related comorbidities. A second focus of the lab is to investigate the role of regulation of gene expression in seizure pathology. Changes in mRNA and microRNA levels represent a general transcriptional response to seizures that may implicate new therapeutic targets. However\, the idea that literacy development in two languages may be related for bilingual children learning to read and write is in accordance with the indisputable evidence that the bilingual’s two languages are simultaneously active during language acquisition and use even in situations in which individuals intend to produce or comprehend one language alone (e.g.\, Kroll et al.\, 2015). In this talk\, I will argue that both the development of literacy and the processes leading to fluent biliteracy can be examined through the Four Levels of Literacy Model (Alves & Finger\, 2023)\, which consists of a continuum of four complementary levels\, referred to as Sociometalinguistic Skills\, Alphabetic Literacy\, Textual Literacy\, and Social Literacy. I will also discuss the research that we are currently developing in my lab which investigates the developmental trajectories of phonological awareness and reading and writing skills in bilingual learners\, connecting these findings with some of my previous work that suggests the existence of an interrelated development of both receptive and productive skills in contexts of biliteracy instruction (Finger\, Lemke\, et al.\, 2024\; Finger & Weissheimer 2024\; Lemke et al.\, 2023\; Oliveira et al.\, 2025).\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Ingrid Finger is a Full Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and the Graduate Program in Languages and Literature at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)\, Brazil\, where she runs the Bilingualism and Cognition Lab – LABICO since 2006. Her research explores the cognitive and linguistic underpinnings of literacy development in monolingual and bilingual children\, with a particular focus on how phonological awareness contributes to biliteracy acquisition across distinct bilingual education contexts. Through this work\, she addresses the universal\, language-specific\, and bilingual influences on child reading development and dyslexia She is the author of several books\, including Literacy in Monolingual and Bilingual Contexts\, co-authored with Ubiratã Kickhöfel Alves (Vozes\, 2023) and Literacy and Biliteracy: From Theory to Practice (Pontes\, 2025). She is a member of the Brazilian National Science for Education Network. Like the mammalian prostate\, the fly AG consists of two types of secretory epithelial cells\, an extracellular matrix\, and a surrounding innervated muscle sheath. The secretory epithelium is composed of large\, postmitotic cells that are binucleated and polyploid\, revealing that the differentiation process for the development of this tissue involves extensive cell cycle remodeling\, such as skipping cytokinesis to result in bi-nucleation and skipping M-phases to result in polyploidy. Following eclosion\, the tissue goes through a pronounced growth phase during the first 10 days of adult life. However because this tissue remains post mitotic in the adult\, cell cycle activity during the first 4 hours after adult emergence\, drives growth through a further increase in cell ploidy (chromosome content) during organ maturation. We have also observed that damage to this tissue induces compensatory cellular enlargement through increases in polyploidy\, a response analogous to hypertrophic growth observed in the mammalian liver following a partial hepatectomy. In this study\, RNA sequencing was used to characterize transcriptional dynamics during the first five days post-eclosion to identify gene expression changes underlying early AG growth. In parallel\, tissue wound healing capabilities were assessed using a novel acute puncture model. Recovery following damage was evaluated through fluorescent staining and a damage responsive GFP reporter line\, enabling visualization of cellular responses and identification of candidate pathways in damage induced growth. Together\, these findings provide insight into the molecular mechanisms involved in growth and tissue plasticity in the AG and establish a framework for studying epithelial regeneration in a system that allows for direct genetic analysis. For instance\, the vast majority of the cost of a data breach is not borne by the firm suffering the breach\, but by the users and consumers whose data were stolen\; similarly\, the harm caused by software problems is\, by and large\, shouldered by consumers\, not developers. Over the past decade\, an overarching goal of my research group has been to develop innovative data analytics methodologies and policy ideas to help realign these incentives. Within this context\, I will present our recent work in new approaches to quantifying cyber risk at an organizational level\, quantifying the social cost of data breaches\, and in developing mathematical models that capture the strategic interactions and decision making among parties driven by different incentives.\nBio: \nMingyan Liu is a leading expert in sequential decision and learning theory\, game theory and incentive mechanisms\, all within the context of large-scale networked systems and with applications to cybersecurity. Technologies she developed in this space have been successfully transitioned. She co-founded the start-up company\, QuadMetrics\, Inc.\, commercializing predictive data analytics her team developed for cyber risk quantification that resulted in the first global enterprise cybersecurity ratings system\; it was acquired by the analytics software company Fair Isaac (FICO) in 2016. This technology has been used for enterprise risk management\, vendor management\, cyber insurance underwriting\, and most recently\, in augmenting Environmental\, Social\, and Governance (ESG) ratings. For this she received the “Crossing the Valley of Death” PI Excellence Award from the Department of Homeland Security in 2016.\nProf. Liu joined the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, in September 2000\, as an assistant professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. She was the Peter and Evelyn Fuss Chair of ECE from 2018 to 2023\, and has been the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs since 2023. She is the recipient of the 2002 NSF CAREER Award\, the University of Michigan Elizabeth C. This is a foundational and controversial issue in clinical science that has strong implications for clinical practice and everyday life. I discuss current criteria that are used to define psychopathology in children and adolescents\, highlighting the importance of developmental issues and the child’s lived experiences in different environmental settings\, including diverse cultures. I give brief examples from my own research\, which has focused on early developmental contributions to psychopathology\, and more recently\, how parents in different cultural settings define\, explain\, and manage challenging behaviors in their young children. Finally\, I show how current practices fail to incorporate developmental and contextual issues into their diagnostic criteria\, with potentially adverse consequences for children\, families\, and their broader communities.\n\nAbout the speaker: Dr. Sheryl Olson is Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan. Her research has focused on the early childhood origins of disruptive behavior problems\, highlighting complex transactions between self-regulation and social-cognitive difficulties experienced by the child and adverse relationships among family and peers. She has a long history of conducting studies that trace children’s early behavioral development over time\, most notably a 19-year prospective study of the development of aggressive and impulsive behavior (the Michigan Longitudinal Study). Dr. Olson also has examined early emotion regulation difficulties in different cultural settings (U.S.\, China\, and Japan)\, integrating biological\, behavioral\, and social assessments of preschool-age children and their functioning.
