For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. They become a means to communicate ideas to clients and his crew and become an extension of his voice—an academic exercise rooted in artistic practice that fosters collaboration and innovation. The act of sketching also reflects his evolving relationship with the city\, as each drawing encapsulates fleeting moments of inspiration drawn directly from his surroundings. This duality of function—creating art for exhibition and conceptualizing designs for projects—demonstrates Swafford’s versatility and adaptability as an artist.\n\nSwafford received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design\, and while at RISD\, he was part of the European Honors Program. Defendants with greater socioeconomic advantage are more likely to access rehabilitative alternatives and avoid criminal records. We discuss how these outcome differences may reflect not only disparities in options offered by the court\, but also in defendants’ choices among them. These efforts resulted in several significant milestones including the experimental realization of “metalloaromaticity\" (the concept that metallic rings may also display traditional aromatic behavior as exhibited by benzene)\, synthesis of the first molecule containing a boron-boron double bond—the first “diborene”\, and synthesis of the first molecule containing a triple bond between two main group metals (the gallium analog of acetylene). Research efforts have also concerned carbene stabilization of highly reactive main group molecules such diphosphorus (P2)\, diarsenic (As2)\, and disilicon (Si2). We will first present several kernel topologies\, which we classify as weak topologies (which includes weak* (also called Borkar)\, Young\, and kernel mean embedding topologies)\, and strong topologies (in various forms)\, and study their relations. Regularity of optimal cost on models and policies will then be presented with a unified framework.\n\nWe will show that weak topologies are versatile for control policy spaces where the associated compactness/continuity properties result in new existence and approximate optimality results in both discrete-time and continuous-time\, such as (i) discrete-time approximations for controlled diffusions with full\, partial\, and decentralized information\, (ii) near optimality of Lipschitz policies\, and (iii) finite approximations for stochastic control with decentralized information.\n\nStrong kernel topologies\, however\, are needed for a general robustness theory on mismatched models: When an optimal control policy designed for an incorrect model is applied to a true system\, we show that the expected induced mismatch cost is continuous under continuous weak convergence and uniform convergence of transition kernels. Under stronger regularity\, a modulus of continuity is also applicable. As implications we study (i) robustness to finite approximations\, (ii) robustness to empirical or Bayesian model learning\, (iii) near optimality of quantized Q-learning for MDPs with standard Borel spaces\, and (iv) robustness to incorrectly modeled noise or prior distributions. Drawing on in-depth interviews with editors of four queer and feminist academic journals published in Turkey\, I focus on how feminist and queer epistemic ecologies are sustained and expanded within and beyond academia\, as well as on the challenges and vulnerabilities that shape these efforts.\n\nWomen’s and gender studies (WGS) in Turkey—rooted in the 1980s—has long been mutually reinforcing with feminist and queer movements. The political-academic ethos cultivated by WGS within universities constitutes a key dynamic behind its targeting by various anti-gender actors\, mechanisms\, and procedures. I begin by tracing the trajectory through which anti-genderism in Turkish universities has shifted from being framed as a repressive politics to claiming a “constructive” epistemology that nonetheless excludes queer and feminist knowledge. I then analyze how these journals sustain their feminist ethos and intellectual integrity through practices of scholarly community-building\, as well as through financial\, editorial\, and epistemic strategies that strengthen feminist knowledge production and dissemination. Finally\, I reflect on the prospects of gender studies in Turkish universities amid administrative\, epistemic\, and political landscapes reshaped by anti-genderism.
