SUMMARY:Exhibition:'Redefining the Crown' Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you? SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World
DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. DESCRIPTION:Step into an intimate journey through the evocative world of Korean art song\, where memories of home\, love\, longing\, and hope come to life — revealing the inner landscapes of the human heart and the emotions that connect us all.\n\nThe Korean Performing Arts Initiative presents a guest recital featuring international concert\, stage and recording vocalist Yooncho Cho\, performing with SMTD professor Matthew Thompson.\n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS\n\nYOONCHO CHO is internationally recognized for her luminous tone\, refined expressivity\, and remarkable artistic freedom – praised by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and *Sächsische Zeitung*. A prizewinner of several international competitions\, including the Musica Sacra\, Strauss\, Rheinsberg\, and Darclée Competitions\, she served as a principal soloist at Theater Münster and has appeared in leading roles at major German opera houses\, including Essen\, Freiburg\, and Wiesbaden. Her operatic repertoire includes roles such as Blonde (*Die Entführung aus dem Serail*) and Musetta (*La Bohème*).\n \nAs a concert artist\, she has performed at the Berlin Philharmonie and in major venues across Europe\, collaborating with distinguished conductors such as Wolfgang Sawallisch and Christian Thielemann. Her repertoire includes Bach’s Passions\, Mozart’s *Requiem*\, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9\, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. She has also been featured at major international festivals\, including the Leipzig Bach Festival\, and has performed with leading orchestras across Asia.\n\nDeeply committed to Korean art song\, she shares its beauty and emotional depth with audiences worldwide. She has introduced Korean art songs – including “Arirang” – to European audiences and regularly leads masterclasses in Korea on this repertoire.\n\nHer recording of Handel’s *Dixit Dominus*\, conducted by Winfried Toll\, was released by Sony Classical. She has also appeared with the Seoul Metropolitan Opera and the Korea National Opera.\nShe studied at Seoul National University\, earned her master’s degree from the Berlin University of the Arts\, and completed the Konzertexamen with highest honors at the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig. She is currently Professor of Voice at Gongju National University of Education.\n\nMATTHEW THOMPSON DMA (collaborative piano) joined the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance faculty in 2011 and was recently described by a former student as “giving one of the most wholesome\, nerdy\, epic-but-modest unicorn professor experiences you’ll ever find at U-M.” As a collaborative pianist\, Dr. Thompson has performed with operatic celebrities including Thomas Hampson\, Golden Mask winner Vince Yi\, and even musical theater gurus like Tony Award winner\, Gavin Creel. \n\nA lifelong gamer\, Dr. Thompson’s interests in video game music have become a major component of his teaching and research.  His upcoming book\, *The Video Game Piano Phenomenon: Press Ab to Play* will release in Spring 2027 as part of Intellect Publishing’s Studies in Game Sound and Music book series. \n\nIn 2022\, Thompson published a database of Korean Art Song\, koreanartsongresource.com\, currently containing thousands of song entries. The same year\, he organized and performed “K-ArtSong: a Korean Art Song Recital\,” excerpts of which went viral in Korean news media accumulating more than 10 million views. In 2024\, Thompson traveled to Korea and performed with U-M student\, Jack Morin\, on a Korean reality show\, *KoreaInvitesU*.\n\nThompson received masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan in collaborative piano\, studying with his long time mentor\, Martin Katz.

DESCRIPTION:PlayFest is a reading festival highlighting the work of 4 student playwrights whose work was selected from multiple submissions. Selected playwrights have worked the entire semester developing their work with student directors and dramaturgs. DESCRIPTION:Amy Chavasse (faculty\, Dance)\, Malcolm Tulip (faculty\, Theatre & Drama)\, and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance major\, Anna Bodescu join together for an evening of storytelling\, movement\, and dance. Careening from acts boisterous and absurd to tributes reverent and tender\, the three works promise an unflinching examination of the human condition.\n\nPROGRAM\n\n*Little Charlotte the Round Ray* (premiered at the Disguise Festival\, Northampton\, MA\, May 2025)\n\nA cautionary tale\, told as speculative fiction in kaleidoscopic movement\, song and storytelling. It examines the desperation that can emerge from belief systems that elevate hysteria\, and wishful thinking. At its core\, this is a heartfelt homage to Charlotte.\n\n*Low Light* (premiered at the Beijing Dance Festival\, 2014)\n\nIn 1956\, Rachel Carson wrote a script for the popular TV show *Omnibus* called *Something About the Sky*. She hoped to challenge the \"sterile preoccupation with things artificial\" and question our \"alienation from our source of strength.” Our absolute and essential humanness calls out for a re-imagined vocabulary of encounters. This dance seeks to uncover how this looks and feels across an expanse of emotional latitude – the imaginary line that connects points across the surface of the earth. Geographical imagery provides a framework as the dancer moves inside a quivering\, episodic narrative.\n\n*deux dogtooth* (premiered at the Arthur Miller Theatre\, 2017)\n\nA duet for Tulip and Chavasse that uses misappropriation and agitprop in a tightly structured improvisation that relies on intricately timed textural layering\, gestures and humor. Obliquely referencing the 2009 film\, *Dogtooth* by Yorgos Lanthimos\, the action unfolds on and around a table\, two chairs and a thick shag rug.

Can they use their skills in other ways\, and still make music?\n\nMusician Minus Instrument both breaks and expands what it means to be a musician and a performer. The “instruments” run the gamut from a loose jack cable to an IKEA desk lamp to simple bodies and voices. Beyond This Point\, composed of Chicago-based collaborative percussion/arts trio Adam Rosenblatt\, John Corkill\, and AJ Morrissey straddles the disciplines of music\, theater\, and science through gesture and ingenuity.

DESCRIPTION:A tapestry of sound - intricate and expansive\n\nIn an era of precision-crafted playlists and algorithmic recommendations\, Pajamas is a refreshing anomaly. Hailing from Ann Arbor\, MI\, Pajamas' style has been described as “exploratory rock\" - a good descriptor for Pajamas’ sound which contains a smorgasbord of influences from across almost the whole canon of American music tradition. This four man group is redefining the live music experience\, standing on the shoulders of giants and crafting performances that are as much about the journey as the destination. \n\nThe band’s rocky overall sound is nuanced\, feeling almost like each song is an interesting\, in-depth conversation between the band and audience. The band's four members - Nicholas Orr\, Graham Low\, Owen Kellenberger\, and Liam Gallegos - weave together a tapestry of sound that is both intricate and expansive. Songs blend seamlessly into one another\, creating a sense of flow and continuity that is all too rare in modern music.\n\nPajamas draws influence from the likes of Pink Floyd\, Phish\, Chick Corea\, Grateful Dead\, Jaco Pastorius\, David Bowie\, Brian Blade\, Radiohead\, Victor Wooten\, Allman Brothers and many others. Since 2018\, Pajamas has played hundreds of shows across the Midwest and beyond. From festivals like Summer Camp and big stages like Frederik Meijer Garden Amphitheater they’ve shared the stage with nationally touring acts including Goose\, Aqueous\, Thornetta Davis\, Karina Rykman and many others.
