Debbie Thompson works predominantly in clay and draws inspiration from the natural world, which she frequently references in her work. Her interest in ceramics began in high school when she took classes at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She later pursued her passion at the University of Michigan School of Art and Design, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She also holds a Master of Arts from Eastern Michigan University and has completed post-graduate studio coursework at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Maryland Institute College of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.

Thompson taught visual art in the Ann Arbor Public Schools for 34 years and has also taught at the University of Michigan School of Education and Washtenaw Community College. She exhibits her work both locally and nationally and was a member of the Clay Gallery. She continues her practice in her home studio and at the Potters Guild in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is a member of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts and the Michigan Ceramic Art Association. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the International Dinnerware Museum.

Thompson’s work has been inspired by the natural world since childhood. Although she initially studied biology in college, she later shifted her focus to visual art. The textures, colors, and forms in her pieces are drawn directly from nature.
Seeds—structures that have enabled plants to move through space and time for over 600 million years—are central to her recent work. They are vital to the continuation of plant life, and therefore to human survival.

In this exhibition, Thompson explores the unseen structures of seeds as revealed through electron microscopy. These images highlight the intricate beauty and ingenuity of nature, which she interprets through her wall-mounted ceramic sculptures.

At a time when our planet and its ecosystems face increasing threats, Thompson’s work serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world. Recognizing the beauty and significance of these often-unseen forms is a crucial first step toward protecting the life systems on which we all depend.
Melissa Jones works across multiple mediums, consistently centering the human figure, texture, and elements of the natural world—such as weathered surfaces, bones, and rust. These recurring interests create a unifying thread throughout her work, regardless of medium.
She creates in both two and three dimensions, including sculpture, painting, and assemblage. Oil painting is her preferred medium, allowing her to work slowly in layered processes and achieve a wide range of nuanced effects.

Jones’ work is primarily figurative, often narrative and autobiographical—though not strictly self-portraiture. Her figures are intended to evoke emotional responses that are less commonly found in landscape or other painting genres. She draws inspiration from the visual poetry of the human form, finding beauty in subtle details: the turn of a wrist, the curve of a spine, or the shadow along a collarbone. She is captivated by how light illuminates the skin and how shadow defines form, embracing the challenge of capturing this complexity in paint. Beyond physical representation, her work also explores psychological dimensions, aiming to convey mood and emotional depth.

Her technique, in both painting and sculpture, is highly detailed, realistic, and developed gradually over time through layered processes. At times, her work enters the realm of magical realism. While deeply personal, her narratives remain intentionally ambiguous, inviting viewers to interpret the imagery through their own perspectives and experiences.

Born and raised in Detroit, Jones studied at Wayne State University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education and a Master’s degree in Art Therapy. She previously worked as an art educator in the West Bloomfield School District and has exhibited professionally throughout the Detroit area since 2006, receiving numerous awards. In addition, she served as a board member and exhibition committee member for the Detroit Artists Market.
Resistance Is Fertile honors the founding moment of the Institute for Research on Women & Gender, while speaking to the present. The institute was established because faculty members believed that research on women, gender, and sexuality required an institutional commitment to thrive. That belief was itself a form of resistance—to disciplinary silos, to marginalization, to the idea that such scholarship was peripheral.

This theme reminds us that resistance is not merely reactive; it is constructive. When rooted in collaboration and sustained through infrastructure, it produces knowledge that reshapes disciplines, institutions, and public life.

This exhibit celebrates 30 years of IRWG—its history, its programs, and the people whose vision and labor built it into what it is today. Through archival materials, milestones, and stories, we trace the evolution of an institute that has continually expanded the boundaries of research in women, gender, and sexuality.

This exhibit centers growth, collaboration, and intellectual creativity—honoring the sustained efforts, bold ideas, and collective care that have shaped IRWG’s legacy and continue to guide its future.

Hosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, U-M.

Located on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street), the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public, M-F, 9am-4pm.
Archives at the University of Michigan have been working to develop new connections and relationships around the state of Michigan in the hopes of re-envisioning and re-connecting collections to communities in engaging and ethical ways. We are working to develop a paradigm of “shared stewardship.” When the Smithsonian adopted a Shared Stewardship and Ethical Returns policy in 2022, Lonnie G. Bunch III, Secretary of the Smithsonian, described the policy as “a cultural shift in our concepts of possession, ownership, and stewardship of collections.” The Smithsonian’s new policy is designed to address the harm caused by the museum’s past extractive practices and engage, consult, and work collaboratively with descendants and communities represented in their collections.

At the University of Michigan, we are building on this approach, which has become increasingly common in museums, to apply it to archival collections and communities of records. In May 2026, we are hosting a symposium on the topic, which will feature contributions from unique archives-community collaborations from around the State and allow for productive conversations about how to build and encourage further shared stewardship among Michigan archives.

Our goals in hosting the symposium are to:

- Create an opportunity for archivists from a variety of institutions across Michigan to share and discuss different ways to document diverse histories and build collaborative relationships between archives and records creators
- Explore new approaches to the archival record, programming and outreach, and teaching and research at archives across the state that will foster and create more diverse and comprehensive histories of life in Michigan
- To build toward a set of best practices that will support and encourage archival professionals across Michigan, and the nation, to foster collaborative relationships with records creators and source communities.

The symposium will feature three panels and will be followed by a keynote panel and a reception. Attendees may also attend the panel and keynote events via webinar, which is free and requires registration.

The symposium will take place online and on the UM-Ann Arbor campus on May 21, 2026, and is part of the Towards Community-Based, Shared Stewardship project. It is free and open to ALL to attend.

The Communities in Conversation: Towards Community-Based Shared Stewardship in Michigan Archives Symposium is co-presented by the Bentley Historical Library, the School of Information, and the Inclusive History Project.

Questions?
June 1-10, 2026 MWF
10:00am - 1:00pm
A live course via Zoom. Registration and payment are required a minimum of two weeks prior to the start of the course.

Founded in 1948, the Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques is designed specifically to meet the needs of professionals and graduate students seeking to deepen their expertise in survey methodology and data collection. Offered through the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science within the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, the program provides a rigorous and flexible curriculum that blends theoretical foundations with practical application — entirely online.

Data Collection Using Wearables, Sensors, and Apps in the Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

The recent proliferation of mobile technology allows researchers to collect objective health and behavioral data at increased intervals, in real time, and may also reduce participant burden. In this course, we will provide examples of the utility of and integration of wearables, sensors, and apps in research settings. Examples will include the use of wearable health devices to measure activity, apps for ecological momentary assessment, and smartphone sensors to measure sound and movement, among others. Additionally, this course will consider the integration of these new technologies into existing surveys and the quality of the data collected from the total survey error perspective. We will discuss considerations for assessing coverage, participation, and measurement error when integrating wearables, sensors, and apps in a research setting as well as the costs and privacy considerations when collecting these types of data. Participants will work in groups to discuss a research study design using new technology and have the opportunity for hands-on practice with sensor data.

Heidi Guyer is Senior Public Health Research Scientist at RTI International. Before joining RTI, she was a Senior Survey Director and oversaw data collection on large national and international health research projects at the University of Michigan. She received a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Michigan and a Master of Public Health from the University of Texas. She has extensive experience in population-based data collection, cross-sectional and longitudinal health surveys, and adapting clinical measures and new technology in health research. Her substantive areas of research have focused on the association between health behaviors, such as sleep and diet quality, and the development of chronic health conditions.",

Registration and payment are required a minimum of two weeks prior to the start of the course.

Introduction to the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) Workshop

The Health and Retirement Study (hrs.isr.umich.edu) workshop is intended to give participants an introduction to the study that will enable them to get started using the data for research. HRS is a large-scale longitudinal study with more than 20 years of data on the labor force participation and health transitions that individuals undergo toward the end of their work lives and in the years that follow. This online workshop is intended for users who have little to no experience using HRS data.

Content lectures delivered by HRS co-investigators and content area experts on basic survey content, sample design, weighting, and restricted data files will be available on the course website for viewing ahead of time. During the week of the workshop, each content lecturer will participate in a Zoom meeting with the class to answer questions about their lecture. The majority of each day will be devoted to data labs in which participants will gain experience using the data, with a strong focus on introductory data management and simple data analysis.

Amanda Sonnega, PhD, is a Research Scientist in the Survey Research Center of the Institute for Social Research (ISR) at the University of Michigan (UM), where she is responsible for integrating communication, outreach, and education efforts for the Health and Retirement Study. She received her doctorate through the Department of Health, Behavior, and Society at the Johns Hopkins University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship within the ISR program in Social Environment and Health. Dr. Sonnega has lectured in the UM School of Public Health on psychosocial factors in health-related behavior. Her research focuses on life course trajectories of physical and mental health; institutional and personal factors associated with vulnerability and resilience in aging individuals; and work transitions and their broad effects on health and well-being.

From September 2025 through November 2026, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20); and Sometimes Space, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions, performances, and events, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project, Byrne, Clegg, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:

Phase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)
Phase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)
Phase 3 (September 12 - November 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)
Phase 2 Curatorial Statement

Curated by Sometimes Space: Sally Clegg (entry pillar)
Curated by CYNK Studios: Kim Karlsrud (courtyard pillar)

Artists Sally Clegg and Kim Karlsrud wrap the Division Street pillars in highly site-specific ornament unearthed from the overlooked margins of Ann Arbor. On the Courtyard pillar, Karlsrud scales up photographs of objects found in liminal spaces surrounding campus buildings on Green Road, which the artist has encrusted in road salt. On the entryway pillar, Clegg zooms in on tiny fragments of found material from UMich’s famous “rock” to celebrate nearly seven decades of student art and activism. Both artists uplift aggregate of local human activity to reveal tiny worlds of found form.

Sally Clegg: Sentimentary Rock
Sentimentary Rock is a composition of paint slag collected from the UMich rock monument at the corner of Washtenaw Avenue and Hill Street. This colorful composite material has been accumulating at the base of the iconic limestone boulder since the mid 1950’s, when students began a tradition of painting it in acts of protest, creativity, and ritual, sometimes multiple times per week. Akin to byproducts of industry such as “Fordite” (collectable chunks of automotive overspray sometimes called ‘Detroit agate’), Sentimentary Rock includes thousands of layers, each dripped from a palimpsestic public proclamation. When processed, sculpted, sealed, assembled, and macro-photographed, the result is this enlarged array of tiny gems, intended to celebrate the indissoluble student voice.

Kim Karlsrud: What Amasses
What Amasses is an assemblage of everyday found objects collected within the Miller Creek watershed, an urbanized drainage system that encompasses much of the city of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan campus. Selected objects were immersed in a road salt solution, allowing delicate crystalline formations to emerge. Road salt is a common material input into these hydrological networks during the winter months and exists in multiple states of refinement, expression, coherence, and fragmentation. Each object was then arranged, photographed, and enlarged to recontextualize these materials in ways that invite deeper reflections on how infrastructure and human agency blur notions of the natural and the artificial.
Artist Statements/Bios

Sally Clegg
Sally Clegg is an artist and educator from Pelham, Massachusetts. Her studio practice is rooted in sculpture and expanded printmaking, stemming from a fascination with human efforts to make meaning from our relationships to objects. Clegg integrates history, popular culture, literature and philosophy as material for artmaking, leveraging personal anecdote and humor to reveal the complexity, absurdity, and theoretical richness at play in our connections to things and to ourselves.

Clegg holds an MFA in Art from The University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design, and a BA in Art & English from Goucher College. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work can be found in permanent collections at Yale University, The New York Public Library, and elsewhere. Her artwork and writing has appeared in ASAP/Journal, BOMB Magazine, Sculpture Magazine, and Hyperallergic. She is a lecturer in Art & Design at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram

Kim Karlsrud
Kim Karlsrud is the co-founder of Commonstudio, a collaborative creative practice that develops socio-ecological and spatial interventions, installations, and initiatives working with and within urban landscapes. Her work explores the space between art and design, and is grounded in the concept of the “commons,” that which is shared, as well as that which is ordinary, banal, and commonplace.

Karlsrud completed her undergraduate degree in Product Design from Otis College of Art and Design and an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan. She is currently an Assistant Visiting Professor in the College of Design at the University of Oregon, teaching across Art and Landscape Architecture departments. She jointly received the 2014-15 Prince Charitable Trust Rome Prize in Landscape Architecture, was a 2017 resident at the Headlands Center for the Arts, and is the 2025-26 Fuller Fieldscape Fellow.
From September 2025 through August 2026, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. In response, they've curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:
Phase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA '23) and Erin McKenna (MFA '20)Phase 2 (January 12 - April 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA '20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA '20)Phase 3 (May 12 - August 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA '20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA '21)
Phase 3
Curated by Sometimes Space: Abhishek Narula (entry pillar)Curated by CYNK Studios: Nathan Byrne (courtyard pillar)
Becoming is the senior thesis project of Stamps School of Art & Design student Elsa Olander. It is a multidisciplinary exhibition that traces her artistic evolution from high school student in Kenya to graduating college senior in the U.S. It explores personal growth through material experimentation, identity formation, and cultural hybridity. The work features 2-D, 3-D, and 4-D work; each piece serving as a visual artifact of transformation.

Becoming isn’t about arriving. It’s about highlighting the moments that get us there. The doubt, discovery, and growth that shape who we are. It’s a reminder to learn from the past and plan for the future, but most importantly to live in the present. We become who we are not just through all the choices we make, but through the people we surround ourselves with, the information we take-in, and what we choose to believe or question.

“This exhibition is about my growth and process, but it’s not singular. Many of my family members, including my mother, aren’t able to attend my graduation due to the ongoing visa ban affecting several African countries. This show is my way of honoring their presence in my life, acknowledging where I’ve come from, and sharing my journey with those who may not be able to witness it in person. My hope is that viewers see these works not just as a portrait of my evolution, but as an invitation to reflect, relate, and reimagine their own paths of becoming.”
-Elsa Olander

Becoming: My Journey Through Stamps
Exhibition Dates: April 30 – May 22, 2026
Opening Reception: Thursday, April 30, 5:30 – 8 p.m. (RSVP Recommended)
Duderstadt Center Gallery
We develop a unified framework for flexible distributional learning based on expectile regression with adaptive basis functions, allowing one to capture heterogeneous covariate effects across different regions of the outcome distribution. Building on this foundation, we introduce a series of methodological contributions that extend expectile regression to increasingly complex data settings.

First, we propose a flexible nonparametric framework for expectile regression using reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHS), motivated by longitudinal studies in human biology in which aspects of the distribution of offspring anthropometry covary with parental characteristics. We develop a computationally efficient algorithm based on over-relaxed alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to estimate expectiles across multiple distributional levels, and establish valid joint inference procedures for a collection of expectiles using both cross-fitting and robust analytic approaches.

Second, we extend expectile regression to event time data subject to right censoring and left truncation, motivated by biomedical and public health studies where outcomes are incompletely observed and covariate effects may vary across the lifespan. Our motivating application is to understand how lifespans in different demographic groups correspond to neighborhood deprivation, allowing for different effects on early and late mortality. To capture such patterns, we estimate conditional expectiles of patient lifespans using weighting to account for censoring and truncation. We then derive asymptotic linear expansions of the estimators and construct robust sandwich variance estimators, enabling valid inference for distributional contrasts, including comparisons across demographic groups and difference-in-difference analyses across expectile levels.

Third, we develop a unified framework for multivariate generalized expectile regression to analyze multi-output longitudinal data, motivated by applications in which multiple related outcomes are measured repeatedly over time and exhibit complex dependence. Examples include biomedical studies where multiple health indicators are tracked for each patient, or demographic data where event counts in geographic strata evolve jointly over time. Such data may exhibit heterogeneous covariate effects that predict different features of the response distribution. We begin by extending expectile regression to have a link function for each response, enabling the specification of models with additive and multiplicative structures. We formulate the problem as a stacked estimating equation system capturing dependence across outcomes, across time, and across distributional levels without requiring specification of a working correlation structure. We develop cluster-robust sandwich covariance estimators that support valid inference for joint hypotheses, enabling simultaneous assessment of distributional effects across outcomes and expectile levels.

Finally, we introduce a new class of interpretable distributional summaries based on expectile L-moments (EL-moments), motivated by the need for robust and informative measures of distributional shape that can be modeled in relation to covariates. Classical measures such as skewness and kurtosis are often sensitive to extreme observations and are not readily adapted to regression settings, while quantile-based summaries lack smoothness and can be difficult to integrate into unified modeling frameworks. By projecting the expectile function onto a shifted Legendre polynomial basis, we obtain EL-moments that provide interpretable summaries of location, scale, asymmetry, and tail behavior. We further extend these summaries to conditional settings via expectile regression, enabling covariate-dependent characterization of distributional features. We develop an influence-function-based framework for inference, yielding consistent covariance estimators for both the EL-moment coefficients and their derived ratios.
Abstract:

This thesis uses the idea of geometrization in two contexts. The first part is devoted to the Cartier transform developed by Ogus and Vologodsky. We strengthen their main result by weakening the assumptions and by allowing certain reasonable stacks as inputs, obtaining, in particular, corollaries in the logarithmic setting. The second part studies the category of F-gauges over the formal spectrum of the Witt vectors of a perfect field of positive characteristic. We identify the full subcategory of F-gauges with Hodge-Tate weights in the range from 0 to p-2 with the category of Fontaine-Laffaille modules satisfying the analogous weight constraint.",

Introduction to Qualitative Research Methods

This introductory course provides students with a strong foundation in qualitative research, covering principles of qualitative research, study design including participant recruitment and sample size estimation. Students also learn how to design and conduct core data collection methods - in-depth interviews, focus groups, and observation – and a range of field tasks such as transcription and field training. Then writing and critiquing qualitative methods for academic work. The course is highly interactive, emphasizing both the principles and skill development through applied activities. The course needs a minimum of 6 registrants and has an enrollment capacity of 10.

Dr. Monique Hennink is Professor in the Hubert Department of Global Health in the Rollins School of Public Health and Associated Faculty in Sociology at Emory University. She is also Visiting Professor at University of Michigan, Department of Epidemiology, and Instructor at the University of Columbia's EPISUMMER program in Epidemiology. She earned her PhD in Demography in the United Kingdom.

Dr Hennink was indicted into Emory’s MilliPub Club in 2023 and 2024 for two research papers. This honors faculty authors of a scientific publication with over 1,000 citations - considered high impact scholarship. She received the 2020 Provost’s Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Education at Emory University. She also received the 'Excellence in Research' Award in 2019 and the 'Excellence in Teaching' Award in 2016 at the Rollins School of Public Health.

She has particular expertise in applying qualitative research to examine public health issues. She has 30 years’ experience in the design, conduct, analysis, and publication of qualitative health research. She has authored five textbooks on qualitative research, including: Qualitative Research Methods 2nd edition (2020); Focus Group Discussions (2014), Qualitative Research Methods (2011) (also translated into Chinese) and International Focus Group Discussions (2007). She teaches graduate-level courses in qualitative research at Emory University. She developed the 'QUAL-WORKS' (https://sph.emory.edu/qual-works) training program in 2013 for public health professionals. Her courses, workshops and books reflect the application of qualitative methods in globally diverse settings and provide guidance on how to balance methodological rigor with the practical realities of global research. She has also published on various methodological aspects of qualitative research, such as using interpreters and translators in qualitative data collection; the effect of using court reporters on data quality; estimating sample size in qualitative studies; and highlighting emerging methodological issues in focus group research. She has served as a board member for SAGE Publications on their ‘Cases in Methodology’ work and on the editorial board of the International Journal of Multiple Research Approaches. She co-chaired a three-year scientific panel for the International Union of the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP), on ‘Qualitative Research in Population Studies’ which had a mandate to promote rigor in the use of qualitative methods in the discipline. She has led scientific sessions on qualitative research at key professional forums, such as: International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry; International Institute for Qualitative Methods; European Association of Population Studies; and the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population.

Textbook Information: Hennink, Hutter & Bailey (2020) 2nd Ed.
Abstract:

This work studies mixing in dynamical systems, focusing on how fast correlations between observables decay. While most previously studied systems have polynomial or exponential rates, we investigate systems with double exponential decay.

We show that all ergodic surjective linear endomorphisms of tori mix at a double exponential rate for analytic observables. In dimension one, we provide a complete classification for finite Blaschke products on the circle: the rate of mixing (no mixing, exponential, or double exponential) is determined by the value of the derivative of the Blaschke product at its fixed point. We extend the result to free semigroup actions generated by Blaschke products.

We also show that double exponential mixing is not rigid: it is not stable under perturbations and does not imply conjugacy to linear models. In higher dimensions, we construct families of examples of nonlinear maps with and without double exponential rate of mixing, and prove that certain partially hyperbolic systems never have this property.

Our approach uses the Koopman precomposition operator acting on spaces of hyperfunctions (the dual space of analytic functions). In this setting, the operator is non-self-adjoint, compact, and quasi-nilpotent, with its spectrum reduced to zero, which can be considered an indicator of double exponential decay.

Finally, we apply mixing rates to the cohomological equation. We prove the analyticity of solutions under suitable conditions and establish existence and uniqueness results in anisotropic spaces.",

He earned three
chemical engineering degrees and a math degree from the University of Michigan. In 2007, Dr. Street was awarded the Department of Chemical Engineering Alumni Society Merit Award.

The James and Judith Street Professorship in Chemical Engineering was established in 2008 by a gift of $1.5M to establish and support an endowed professorship. The holder will be a professor in the department of Chemical Engineering who will be appointed to the professorship for five-year, renewable terms.

ENDOWED PROFESSORSHIPS
Endowed professorships at Michigan Engineering are essential to the University of Michigan. They provide resources to attract, reward and retain outstanding faculty in all areas of engineering. Appointment to an endowed professorship is reserved for a scholar of national and often international stature who has earned a highly distinguished record of teaching, research and publishing.

These professorships, funded and named by donors, bring prestige and recognition to leading members of our faculty and reward their contributions to the institution and to the field. Equally important, endowed professorships attract new teaching and research talent from outside the University and continue in perpetuity to enrich the community of scholars at Michigan.
Queen Elizabeth II met with President Ford at the White House – not to mention with four of his predecessors and eight of his successors. Indeed, she met with more U.S. presidents than any other person in history. What did she do with that unprecedented access? Quite a bit, journalist Susan Page discovered in her new book, being published at the 100th anniversary of Elizabeth’s birth. Her Majesty was more than a stoic figure in a colorful hat, waving from a balcony. She was a deft diplomat, a shrewd judge of character and, by the way, a skilled mimic. She was also the most effective force maintaining Great Britain’s voice in the world even as its empire declined. A look at how she did that during her long reign, and at her sunny encounter with Jerry and Betty Ford during the Bicentennial celebration.
This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.

As a response to these reflections, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.

View the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday, May 14th, 5pm - 6:30pm, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.
“Radiant and transportive” –No Depression

During the creative explosion that was country music in the 1990s Suzy Bogguss sold 4 million records with sparkling radio hits like “Outbound Plane,” “Someday Soon,” “Letting Go,” “Drive South,” and “Hey Cinderella." But you can’t peg Suzy that easily…

In the midst of her country popularity she took time off to make a duets album with the legendary Chet Atkins. In 2003 she made an album of modern swing music with Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel. An album of original music in 2007 landed her at number 4 on the jazz charts. Her folk music roots show through in her frequent appearances on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion, in the Grammy she earned for her work on Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster, and in her critically acclaimed album and book project from 2011, American Folk Songbook. In 2014 she released Lucky, a collection of songs written by Merle Haggard and interpreted through Suzy’s crystal vocals from the female point of view. Her latest offering, Prayin’ For Sunshine, is an Americana tour de force with all songs written by Bogguss.

She continues to tour the world, both on her own and with fellow country radio divas Terri Clark and Pam Tills as “Chicks With Hits” and more recently, with Kathy Mattea on their Together At Last tour. So yes, you can call her a country singer if you want, but really that’s just the beginning.",
