SUMMARY:Exhibition:Debbie Thompson Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Debbie Thompson works predominantly in clay and draws inspiration from the natural world\, which she frequently references in her work. Her interest in ceramics began in high school when she took classes at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills\, Michigan. She later pursued her passion at the University of Michigan School of Art and Design\, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She also holds a Master of Arts from Eastern Michigan University and has completed post-graduate studio coursework at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, Maryland Institute College of Art\, Rhode Island School of Design\, and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.\n\nThompson taught visual art in the Ann Arbor Public Schools for 34 years and has also taught at the University of Michigan School of Education and Washtenaw Community College. She exhibits her work both locally and nationally and was a member of the Clay Gallery. She continues her practice in her home studio and at the Potters Guild in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. She is a member of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts and the Michigan Ceramic Art Association. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the International Dinnerware Museum.\n\nThompson’s work has been inspired by the natural world since childhood. Although she initially studied biology in college\, she later shifted her focus to visual art. The textures\, colors\, and forms in her pieces are drawn directly from nature.\nSeeds—structures that have enabled plants to move through space and time for over 600 million years—are central to her recent work. They are vital to the continuation of plant life\, and therefore to human survival.\n\nIn this exhibition\, Thompson explores the unseen structures of seeds as revealed through electron microscopy. These images highlight the intricate beauty and ingenuity of nature\, which she interprets through her wall-mounted ceramic sculptures.\n\nAt a time when our planet and its ecosystems face increasing threats\, Thompson’s work serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world. Recognizing the beauty and significance of these often-unseen forms is a crucial first step toward protecting the life systems on which we all depend.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:MEEHubs2026
DESCRIPTION:Science is a global endeavor\, but traveling across the planet for conferences is a resource intensive activity\, producing a large amount of CO2 emissions. In addition\, international scientific conferences are often organized in the Global North\, making it expensive and bureaucratically difficult for people in the Global South to attend\, reducing democratic access to science. Virtual conferences offer a viable alternative: they reduce environmental impact\, broaden participation across countries\, and improve accessibility for researchers with disabilities or caregiving responsibilities. At the same time\, in-person interactions remain essential for building community and fostering collaboration.\n\nMEEHubs offers a hybrid model that combines the strengths of both approaches: remote content for global accessibility and in-person interactions through local hubs worldwide. Building on the success of MEEHubs2024 (link to paper)\, we are thrilled to announce that MEEHubs2026 will take place from August 3–5\, 2026\, at seven local hubs and online.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Melissa Jones Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Melissa Jones works across multiple mediums\, consistently centering the human figure\, texture\, and elements of the natural world—such as weathered surfaces\, bones\, and rust. These recurring interests create a unifying thread throughout her work\, regardless of medium.\nShe creates in both two and three dimensions\, including sculpture\, painting\, and assemblage. Oil painting is her preferred medium\, allowing her to work slowly in layered processes and achieve a wide range of nuanced effects.\n\nJones’ work is primarily figurative\, often narrative and autobiographical—though not strictly self-portraiture. Her figures are intended to evoke emotional responses that are less commonly found in landscape or other painting genres. She draws inspiration from the visual poetry of the human form\, finding beauty in subtle details: the turn of a wrist\, the curve of a spine\, or the shadow along a collarbone. She is captivated by how light illuminates the skin and how shadow defines form\, embracing the challenge of capturing this complexity in paint. Beyond physical representation\, her work also explores psychological dimensions\, aiming to convey mood and emotional depth.\n\nHer technique\, in both painting and sculpture\, is highly detailed\, realistic\, and developed gradually over time through layered processes. At times\, her work enters the realm of magical realism. While deeply personal\, her narratives remain intentionally ambiguous\, inviting viewers to interpret the imagery through their own perspectives and experiences.\n\nBorn and raised in Detroit\, Jones studied at Wayne State University\, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education and a Master’s degree in Art Therapy. She previously worked as an art educator in the West Bloomfield School District and has exhibited professionally throughout the Detroit area since 2006\, receiving numerous awards. In addition\, she served as a board member and exhibition committee member for the Detroit Artists Market.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Resistance is Fertile: Celebrating 30 Years of Cultivating Change
DESCRIPTION:Resistance Is Fertile honors the founding moment of the Institute for Research on Women & Gender\, while speaking to the present. The institute was established because faculty members believed that research on women\, gender\, and sexuality required an institutional commitment to thrive. That belief was itself a form of resistance—to disciplinary silos\, to marginalization\, to the idea that such scholarship was peripheral.\n\nThis theme reminds us that resistance is not merely reactive\; it is constructive. When rooted in collaboration and sustained through infrastructure\, it produces knowledge that reshapes disciplines\, institutions\, and public life.\n\nThis exhibit celebrates 30 years of IRWG—its history\, its programs\, and the people whose vision and labor built it into what it is today. Through archival materials\, milestones\, and stories\, we trace the evolution of an institute that has continually expanded the boundaries of research in women\, gender\, and sexuality.\n\nThis exhibit centers growth\, collaboration\, and intellectual creativity—honoring the sustained efforts\, bold ideas\, and collective care that have shaped IRWG’s legacy and continue to guide its future.\n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Tara Lonsdorf Dissertation Defense
DESCRIPTION:Stable isotope paleoaltimetry relies on the predictable relationship between topography and δ18O of meteoric waters\, under assumptions that simple orographic lifting is the primary control on isotopic fractionation. However\, in continental interiors\, teleconnections between topography and hydroclimate may also affect meteoric δ18O\, complicating interpretations of paleotopography. This uncertainty is particularly problematic for paleotopographic reconstructions of the North American Cordillera (NAC)\, where paleoelevation estimates underpin hypotheses in geodynamics\, evolutionary biology and paleoclimatology. To improve stable isotope paleoaltimetry reconstructions of the NAC from the Cretaceous to the present\, this dissertation reevaluates three fundamental components of stable isotope paleoaltimetry.\n\nFirst\, Chapter 2 addresses challenges to defining surface water isotopic lapse rates (‰/km)\, which translate isotopic shifts to elevation change. Using ~6\,000 published surface water isotopic measurements\, I empirically characterize the spatial variability of >400 local surface water isotopic lapse rates in the NAC. Lapse rate magnitudes generally correlate with regional (Basin and Range\; Rocky Mountains) aridity\, but the underlying processes (elevation-dependent precipitation\; snowpack sublimation) are not generalizable between regions. Rather\, processes governing lapse rate magnitudes are sensitive to regional physiography\, including the rain shadow cast by Sierra Nevadas and the relief between the Front Range and the Great Plains. Problematically\, these relationships suggest that defining surface water isotopic lapse rates requires a priori knowledge of paleotopography\, challenging applications of stable isotopes to paleoelevation reconstructions in arid continental interiors.\n\nNext\, Chapter 3 investigates how evolving mountains route and block air masses\, producing or removing rain shadows. Specifically\, I focus on resolving the timing and magnitude of hydroclimate transitions coincident with orographic collapse of the central Sevier hinterland across the Eocene-Oligocene transition. To reconstruct hydroclimate change\, I report isotopic measurements (δ18O\, δ13C) of fossil tooth enamel and revise sedimentation rates of Eocene through-Miocene-aged strata from Sage Creek Basin\, southwestern Montana. Coupled isotopic depletion and decreasing grain size at ~32 Ma coincided with high-magnitude extension of metamorphic core complexes and associated surface lowering. This result is surprising\, because negative isotopic shifts are typically associated with orographic uplift\, rather than\norographic collapse. I infer that surface lowering removed a rain shadow between the Pacific Ocean and southwestern Montana\, quadrupling contributions of cold\, isotopically-depleted precipitation in the foreland. This hypothesis suggests that isotopic shifts in evolving orogens may be complex and unintuitive\, requiring interpretations using multiple hydroclimate proxies and uplift records.\n\nFinally\, Chapter 4 investigates whether estimates of carbonate formation temperatures\, necessary for reconstructing meteoric water δ18O\, may be biased by cryptic hydrothermal origins in active orogenic belts. I evaluate the formation temperatures of the McKnight Canyon\nlimestone unit — an unusual synorogenic oncolite precipitated at the onset of Laramide uplift (~73.3 Ma) in southwestern Montana — using geochemical indicators of carbonate formation temperatures\, including dual-clumped isotope thermometry. Extreme Δ48 disequilibrium suggests precipitation as a sulfate-reducing microbialite from hydrothermal spring waters at ~35–45 °C\, which may reasonably be misinterpreted as reflecting ambient temperature under a hothouse climate in the Cretaceous. Accurately reconstructing δ18O in uplifting mountain belts\, where hydrothermal springs are common\, may thus require calibrating the “dual-clumped isotope thermometer” for hydrothermal travertines. Collectively\, these studies suggest that stable isotope paleoaltimetry in the NAC and other continental interiors is more complicated than previously recognized. Nonetheless\, δ18O in conjunction with other paleoenvironmental proxy records may yield rich insights into the causes and consequences of topographic change through geologic time.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Up\, Up\, And Away: A History of Ballooning in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the history of balloon flight in the United States from Blanchard’s first ascension to the early twentieth century. In the age of bird’s-eye views\, which imagined a perspective on American cities and towns from high in the air\, balloonists were the only people who actually had the opportunity to see what the growing nation looked like from above. As the nineteenth century progressed\, ballooning became a lucrative (if dangerous) business\, as crowds gathered to watch balloons launch\, and to see aeronauts risk their lives high in the air. Over time\, the image of the hot air balloon proliferated in American print culture\, being used to sell goods ranging from thread to canned beef. We hope that this exhibit conveys some of the thrill that would have come from seeing people fly for the first time.\n\nOn view May 22-August 28\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

Having opened for Erykah Badu\, Reggie Watts\, and CeCe Peniston\, Ki5 represents himself as a seasoned Michigan artist who continues to spread his unique style of vocal-driven music to the masses. His vibrant\, harmonic composition style explores the human voice meshed with beatboxing and delivers familiar genres such as R&B\, pop\, soul\, and more. His honest\, empathetic\, and freeing style has been influenced by Bobby McFerrin\, Reggie Watts\, and Bon Iver and his latest passion other has been improvising full sets of music that make people want to move.\n\nVoices is a series of artist-cultivated concerts at The Ark conceived and created by Ann Arbor musician Kyler Wilkins\, AKA vocal looping artist Ki5. The series seeks to expand the representation of Michigan BIPOC artists and audiences at The Ark. Each show\, intentional time will be taken to get to know each artist in the form of brief interviews and musical breaks to have them speak about their journey as musicians and performers with the hope that people in the audience are more connected to and inspired by those voices.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Verve Pipe
DESCRIPTION:Pop hooks\, alt-rock guitars\, and sharp songwriting\n\nWith a reputation for spectacular live performances\, the genesis of multi-platinum artist The Verve Pipe can be traced back to the early 90s when the principal members of two rival Michigan bands joined forces. After releasing two independent albums\, I’ve Suffered A Head Injury and Pop Smear\, the group quickly garnered a regional following for its textured rock songs distinguished by innovative arrangements\, soul-searching lyrics and layered vocals.\n\nThe success of both albums attracted the attention of RCA Records\, which released their platinum major label debut Villains in 1996. The album featured the radio hit ‘Photograph’ and the #1 single ‘The Freshmen\,’ one of the most successful multi-format tracks of 1997 and winner of an ASCAP Pop Award. Their follow-up release\, the critically acclaimed self-titled LP The Verve Pipe\, featured ‘Hero\,’ a Top 15 hit at Modern Rock radio.\nIn 2001\, RCA released Underneath\, which produced the singles ‘Happiness Is’ and ‘Never Let You Down\,’ one of the most played songs for Adult Top 40 and Modern A/C radio that year. The album also included ‘Colorful\,’ the emotive ballad featured in the film and soundtrack Rock Star\, starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston and also co-starring lead singer Brian Vander Ark in his first major film role.\n\nIn addition to their success on radio\, TV and film\, sold-out concert dates throughout the U.S.\, Canada\, Europe and Australia\, features in Spin and Rolling Stone and videos on MTV and VH1\, the band have made numerous television appearances\, including ‘The Tonight Show With Jay Leno’ and ‘Late Night With David Letterman.’\nAfter an eight year hiatus\, The Verve Pipe were approached to submit an original song for a compilation album of children’s music. That session inspired A Family Album\, their critically acclaimed introduction to the world of children’s music\, as well as their follow up release\, Are We There Yet? Both albums contain music intended for the entire family\, with fun and inventive lyrics set to the memorable melodies the band is known for.\nIn 2014\, The Verve Pipe released their first rock album in over 13 years with Overboard\, a collection of ten new songs including ‘Crash Landing’\, ‘Hit and Run\,’ and the haunting title track ‘Overboard.’ This long incubating project brought a renewed energy and focus to this self-produced album that resulted in their most inspired writing and recording to date.\n\nThe Verve Pipe continue to tour\, performing both rock and kids shows throughout the U.S.\, including special appearances at Lollapalooza\, Austin City Limits Festival\, Hangout Music Festival\, Summer Stage in Central Park\, and many more.
