The institute was established because faculty members believed that research on women\, gender\, and sexuality required an institutional commitment to thrive. That belief was itself a form of resistance—to disciplinary silos\, to marginalization\, to the idea that such scholarship was peripheral.\n\nThis theme reminds us that resistance is not merely reactive\; it is constructive. When rooted in collaboration and sustained through infrastructure\, it produces knowledge that reshapes disciplines\, institutions\, and public life.\n\nThis exhibit celebrates 30 years of IRWG—its history\, its programs\, and the people whose vision and labor built it into what it is today. Through archival materials\, milestones\, and stories\, we trace the evolution of an institute that has continually expanded the boundaries of research in women\, gender\, and sexuality.\n\nThis exhibit centers growth\, collaboration\, and intellectual creativity—honoring the sustained efforts\, bold ideas\, and collective care that have shaped IRWG’s legacy and continue to guide its future.\n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Up\, Up\, And Away: A History of Ballooning in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the history of balloon flight in the United States from Blanchard’s first ascension to the early twentieth century. In the age of bird’s-eye views\, which imagined a perspective on American cities and towns from high in the air\, balloonists were the only people who actually had the opportunity to see what the growing nation looked like from above. As the nineteenth century progressed\, ballooning became a lucrative (if dangerous) business\, as crowds gathered to watch balloons launch\, and to see aeronauts risk their lives high in the air. Over time\, the image of the hot air balloon proliferated in American print culture\, being used to sell goods ranging from thread to canned beef. We hope that this exhibit conveys some of the thrill that would have come from seeing people fly for the first time.\n\nOn view May 22-August 28\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Muted Volumes: Book-Objects\, Patterned Papers\, and the Closed Stacks of Buhr
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

DESCRIPTION:“One of Americana’s great up-and-coming secrets.” –Rolling Stone\n\nOn her new album Still + Bright\, Tennessee-bred singer/songwriter Amythyst Kiah explores the vast expanse of her inner world: her deep-rooted affinity for Eastern philosophies and spiritual traditions\, a near-mystical connection with the natural environment\, the life lessons learned in her formative years as a self-described “anime-nerd mall goth\,” and much more. Produced by Butch Walker (Taylor Swift\, Green Day\, Weezer) and recorded at his Nashville studio\, Kiah’s second full-length for Rounder Records merges her revelatory storytelling with a darkly cinematic twist on the rootsy alt-rock of her 2021 breakthrough Wary + Strange—an LP that landed on Rolling Stone’s list of the 25 Best Country and Americana Albums of 2021 and drew acclaim from major outlets like Pitchfork. With its sonic palette encompassing everything from fuzzed-out guitars and industrial-leaning beats to gilded pedal steel and Kiah’s exquisitely graceful banjo work\, Still + Bright makes for a vital new addition to a body of work largely dedicated to exploring the struggle and joy of true self-discovery.\n\nThe latest turn in a dynamic career that’s included joining Our Native Daughters (an all-women-of-color supergroup also featuring Rhiannon Giddens\, Leyla McCalla\, and Allison Russell)\, Still + Bright emerged from a deliberate transformation of the songwriting process Kiah adopted after composing her first song on a Fender acoustic at age 13. SUMMARY:Performance:An Acoustic Christmas
DESCRIPTION:A holiday show and more\n\n2026 Christmas Tour Thoughts\n\nOne December\, not long after Over the Rhine began recording and touring\, we were invited to perform some seasonal songs on a public radio station. We worked up a few carols and traditional tunes. \n\n\nIt actually felt really good and conjured up an unusual mix of feelings from childhood: innocence\, loss\, wonder\, joy\, sadness. I think we were surprised.\n\nPeople must have tuned into the radio broadcast\, because we began receiving inquiries as to whether we had recorded any of our Christmas songs. \n\nIn December of 1996 – can it really be 30 years ago? – we recorded and released our first song cycle of some of the Christmas carols that still haunted us. We included a few original tunes and called our wintry mix The Darkest Night Of The Year. Folks began snatching up copies and seemed to agree that they hadn’t heard anything quite like it.\n\nWe began playing concerts around the Midwest every December and found that the rooms were usually packed full of people who had bundled in out of the cold. If you stepped outside during intermission\, you could make ghosts with your breath in the crisp night air. And it was dark – oh so dark: a time of year with its own music.\n\nA decade later\, in 2006\, we released our first full collection of original Christmas/holiday songs called Snow Angels. What is it about Christmas music and the undeniable gravitational pull it exerts on some songwriters? So many Christmas songs have already been written. I think we remain genuinely curious about the ones that haven't yet been written.\n\nWe continued to tour every December and these special year-winding-down concerts began to feel like an annual tradition – gatherings of extended musical family\, without whom\, we’d be homeless.\n\nWe released our third holiday album of original songs\, Blood Oranges In The Snow\, in December of 2014. One enthusiastic fan wrote to us\, I just love your new Christmas album\, Blood On The Oranges. We’re dark but not that dark.\n\nOn our 2026 tour\, we will be leaning into some harmonies and making an intimate but hopefully holy ruckus. It won’t be all Christmas music: we’ll certainly mix in tunes from many of our records along the way.
