SUMMARY:Exhibition:2026 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:\n\nAugust 24 - October 18\, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1\, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \n\nThe works in this year’s exhibition engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory\, identity\, materiality\, ecology\, technology\, labor\, social relationships\, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches. While these subjects recur across the exhibition\, what stands out most is not a dominant thematic direction\, but a shared commitment to sustained inquiry.\n\n–Sally Clegg\, Lecturer & Student Exhibitions Coordinator & Pedram Baldari\, Assistant Professor\n\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n<ul class=\"twocol\">\n\nNailah Aguilar\n\nAkylah Archer\n\nZachary Berenbaum\n\nSamantha Blaine\n\nLauren Boyce\n\nKas Brajkovic\n\nAnna Browne\n\nLilah Chow\n\nIsabella Cortes\n\nMagdalena Dimovski\n\nLeah Elliott\n\nAya Fadlelzebair\n\nM. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Resistance is Fertile: Celebrating 30 Years of Cultivating Change
DESCRIPTION:Resistance Is Fertile honors the founding moment of the Institute for Research on Women & Gender\, while speaking to the present. The institute was established because faculty members believed that research on women\, gender\, and sexuality required an institutional commitment to thrive. That belief was itself a form of resistance—to disciplinary silos\, to marginalization\, to the idea that such scholarship was peripheral.\n\nThis theme reminds us that resistance is not merely reactive\; it is constructive. When rooted in collaboration and sustained through infrastructure\, it produces knowledge that reshapes disciplines\, institutions\, and public life.\n\nThis exhibit celebrates 30 years of IRWG—its history\, its programs\, and the people whose vision and labor built it into what it is today. Through archival materials\, milestones\, and stories\, we trace the evolution of an institute that has continually expanded the boundaries of research in women\, gender\, and sexuality.\n\nThis exhibit centers growth\, collaboration\, and intellectual creativity—honoring the sustained efforts\, bold ideas\, and collective care that have shaped IRWG’s legacy and continue to guide its future.\n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Up\, Up\, And Away: A History of Ballooning in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the history of balloon flight in the United States from Blanchard’s first ascension to the early twentieth century. In the age of bird’s-eye views\, which imagined a perspective on American cities and towns from high in the air\, balloonists were the only people who actually had the opportunity to see what the growing nation looked like from above. As the nineteenth century progressed\, ballooning became a lucrative (if dangerous) business\, as crowds gathered to watch balloons launch\, and to see aeronauts risk their lives high in the air. Over time\, the image of the hot air balloon proliferated in American print culture\, being used to sell goods ranging from thread to canned beef. We hope that this exhibit conveys some of the thrill that would have come from seeing people fly for the first time.\n\nOn view May 22-August 28\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Other:Water Week: Stewardship and Co-existence with Beaver
DESCRIPTION:For millennia\, beavers have engineered the waterways of the Great Lakes region\, creating wetlands that store and filter water\, recharge groundwater\, and support rich biodiversity. Sydney Lubeck\, Mel Shea & Evyn Ladendorf-Lilly\, MS SEAS graduates\, explore the beaver's role as a keystone species and ecosystem engineer\, then look beyond Michigan to see how other states are successfully coexisting with beaver — drawing on a couple of case studies that offer practical lessons and inspiration for stewardship of our own waterways here in the Great Lakes region.\n\n\nFollowing the presentation\, join us for a guided walk to visit the Gnawsons' territory and look for signs of beaver activity — chewed stumps\, lodges\, dams\, and channels — while observing how their engineering shapes habitat for birds\, amphibians\, fish\, and countless other species that call these waterways home.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Muted Volumes: Book-Objects\, Patterned Papers\, and the Closed Stacks of Buhr
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

SUMMARY:Performance:River Shook
DESCRIPTION:A fiery fusion of outlaw country-punk twang and rock and roll\n\nRiver Shook carries the country-rock torch of Sarah Shook & the Disarmers into an exciting new era. Shook debuts as a solo artist this year\, and continues to deliver everything we’ve come to expect from them: killer songwriting\, a smoking hot band\, and high-energy\, heart-winning live shows. \n\nRiver Shook's galvanizing\, self-titled\, debut solo album (Independent\, June 26\, 2026) is a mythic body of work. Arrow-to-the-heart honest lyrics\, unforgettable characters\, rock-god electric guitar solos\, shimmering pedal steel\, and Shook’s unmistakable voice cut like a ray of light through a great darkness\, coaxing listeners towards a deeper level of awareness and empowerment. \n\nTouring 150 days per year with the Disarmers gave Shook a significant advantage that they did not let go to waste\; they spent a decade developing their stage presence\, honing their storytelling\, and learning how to give audiences across the world an unforgettable\, potentially life-changing experience. Shook’s egalitarian songwriting\, their ability to make fans feel seen\, and their reputation as a wildly exciting front person have led them to be referred to as “punk” and “rock n’ roll” as frequently as they're called country. \n\n“My songwriting\, my music\, they’re country to the bone\, but it’s that rock n’ roll element that makes the whole thing lift off\,” says Shook. “If you want to give fans an unforgettable show every night\, you need that reckless energy and purity of spirit.\"
