SUMMARY:Exhibition:2026 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:\n\nAugust 24 - October 18\, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1\, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \n\nThe works in this year’s exhibition engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory\, identity\, materiality\, ecology\, technology\, labor\, social relationships\, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches. While these subjects recur across the exhibition\, what stands out most is not a dominant thematic direction\, but a shared commitment to sustained inquiry.\n\n–Sally Clegg\, Lecturer & Student Exhibitions Coordinator & Pedram Baldari\, Assistant Professor\n\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n<ul class=\"twocol\">\n\nNailah Aguilar\n\nAkylah Archer\n\nZachary Berenbaum\n\nSamantha Blaine\n\nLauren Boyce\n\nKas Brajkovic\n\nAnna Browne\n\nLilah Chow\n\nIsabella Cortes\n\nMagdalena Dimovski\n\nLeah Elliott\n\nAya Fadlelzebair\n\nM. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Building-wide Safety Refresher
DESCRIPTION:Camille Peres (NRC): 9:10 AM - 10:10 AM \nTitle: Human Factors\, Safety\, and Academic Laboratories: The Risks of Really Cool Stuff\nAbstract: Academic laboratories carry a distinctive safety risk profile: the people running the equipment are\, by design\, still learning how to run the equipment. Add to that the fact that they're often working with genuinely novel\, cutting-edge techniques and materials — the \"really cool stuff\" that drew them to the lab in the first place — and you get a combination that human factors research has long flagged as dangerous. Excitement and novelty compete directly with attention to procedure\; safety protocols that can feel like friction on the way to an interesting result get forgotten\, taught in passing\, or quietly set aside. This talk draws on human factors and human systems integration research across high-risk industries — process safety\, disaster response\, nuclear operations — to explain why this combination of undertrained enthusiasm is a predictable\, systemic risk rather than a matter of individual carelessness\, and what that reframing means for how academic labs can approach the design of their procedures\, interfaces\, and supervision. The goal is not to dampen the excitement that makes cutting-edge research worth doing\, but to show how safety can be built into the structure of the work itself\, so it survives contact with a genuinely exciting result.\n\nHan Xia (Eli Lilly and Company): 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM\nTitle: Heat\, Risk\, and Control: Thermal Hazard Management in R&D labs and Manufacturing\nAbstract: Process safety in pharmaceutical development and manufacturing and the wider chemical industry demands rigorous\, systematic approaches to two of the most consequential hazard categories encountered across the development lifecycle: thermal runaway and combustible dust explosions. This presentation reports the findings of a broad survey of pharma industry best practices in thermal hazard management — spanning early-stage laboratory screening through pilot and commercial manufacturing scale — and highlights the key themes\, gaps\, and recommendations that emerge from that survey. This presentation describes these findings in detail and provides a comprehensive framework for integrating thermal hazard assessment into the pharmaceutical development workflow from the earliest stages of chemistry design. In the context of thermal hazard assessment\, we will introduce a novel risk prioritization methodology developed at Eli Lilly\, termed the Lilly Energy Density (LED) function. This approach provides a systematic framework for evaluating the risk associated with thermal decomposition events and for prioritizing the sequence and scope of safety testing and evaluation activities. The LED enables development teams to make more informed\, risk-proportionate decisions about which materials and processes require urgent thermal hazard evaluation\, and which present sufficiently low risk to proceed without additional testing burden. The theoretical basis\, practical implementation\, and illustrative case examples of the LED function are presented and discussed.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Resistance is Fertile: Celebrating 30 Years of Cultivating Change
DESCRIPTION:Resistance Is Fertile honors the founding moment of the Institute for Research on Women & Gender\, while speaking to the present. The institute was established because faculty members believed that research on women\, gender\, and sexuality required an institutional commitment to thrive. That belief was itself a form of resistance—to disciplinary silos\, to marginalization\, to the idea that such scholarship was peripheral.\n\nThis theme reminds us that resistance is not merely reactive\; it is constructive. When rooted in collaboration and sustained through infrastructure\, it produces knowledge that reshapes disciplines\, institutions\, and public life.\n\nThis exhibit celebrates 30 years of IRWG—its history\, its programs\, and the people whose vision and labor built it into what it is today. Through archival materials\, milestones\, and stories\, we trace the evolution of an institute that has continually expanded the boundaries of research in women\, gender\, and sexuality.\n\nThis exhibit centers growth\, collaboration\, and intellectual creativity—honoring the sustained efforts\, bold ideas\, and collective care that have shaped IRWG’s legacy and continue to guide its future.\n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Up\, Up\, And Away: A History of Ballooning in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the history of balloon flight in the United States from Blanchard’s first ascension to the early twentieth century. In the age of bird’s-eye views\, which imagined a perspective on American cities and towns from high in the air\, balloonists were the only people who actually had the opportunity to see what the growing nation looked like from above. As the nineteenth century progressed\, ballooning became a lucrative (if dangerous) business\, as crowds gathered to watch balloons launch\, and to see aeronauts risk their lives high in the air. Over time\, the image of the hot air balloon proliferated in American print culture\, being used to sell goods ranging from thread to canned beef. We hope that this exhibit conveys some of the thrill that would have come from seeing people fly for the first time.\n\nOn view May 22-August 28\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Performance:Marty O'Reilly
DESCRIPTION:“a culmination of blues\, folk\, and soul inflections that altogether develop a sound that’s fresh and cosmic.” –Pop Matters\n\nMarty O’Reilly’s music feels timeless\, like an old story told in a new way. His raw\, soulful voice and gritty guitar playing form the foundation of a sound rooted in Americana. Drawing inspiration from folk icons like Woody Guthrie\, blues legends like Howlin’ Wolf\, gospel pioneers like Sister Rosetta Thorpe\, and storytellers like Tom Waits\, Marty’s music captivates and connects audiences.\n\nHis live performances aren’t just concerts\; they’re cathartic experiences. From soft and haunting moments to wild and electric highs\, his shows linger with you long after the lights come up. Marty’s songs dig deep into the human experience\, exploring themes of loneliness\, connection\, love\, and loss. Whether performing solo or with a full band\, he brings listeners into his world\, making them feel like part of the story.\n\nOver years of relentless touring and self-funded albums\, Marty has built a dedicated following. He’s shared the stage with Shakey Graves\, St. Paul & The Broken Bones\, and Sarah Jarosz and played festivals like Bottlerock and High Sierra Music Festival. Through it all\, he remains focused on creating music that is honest\, meaningful\, and profoundly real.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Muted Volumes: Book-Objects\, Patterned Papers\, and the Closed Stacks of Buhr
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.
