DESCRIPTION:\n\nAugust 24 - October 18\, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1\, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \n\nThe works in this year’s exhibition engage a wide range of questions and concerns. DESCRIPTION:There are nearly one million refugees currently living in Poland. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine\, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia\, Latin America\, Africa\, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different\, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*\, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)\, Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what\, in Poland\, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw\, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*\, *The Guardian*\, *The Wall Street Journal*\, *The Washington Post*\, *El Pais*\, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR\, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-term personal projects\, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss\, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion\, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project “Too Precious to Leave Behind”.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Muted Volumes: Book-Objects\, Patterned Papers\, and the Closed Stacks of Buhr
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:The Institute for the Humanities’ presentation of Cosmo Whyte’s* Ballad for Rodney* (2024) is organized as part of Whyte’s upcoming solo exhibition at the Stamps Gallery entitled *Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye*.\n\nThis “curtain painting” operates simultaneously as painting and sculpture\, inviting the viewer to physically engage with the surface\, passing through to another layer underneath. \n\nAbout the artist\nCosmo Whyte (b. 1982\, St. Andrew\, Jamaica) is an interdisciplinary artist who employs drawing\, installation\, and sculpture to create conceptual work exploring interstitial subjectivity through an engagement with both intimate and public archives\, as well as Black spatiality and forms of resistance. He received his MFA from the University of Michigan. In 2022\, he joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture as an assistant professor.\n\n\nWhyte’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, including at MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; The High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA\; The Drawing Center\, New York\, NY\; Atlanta Contemporary\, Atlanta\, GA\; Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France\; and the National Gallery of Jamaica\, Kingston\, Jamaica\, among others. His work is in public museum collections including the High Museum\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; International African American Museum\, Charlotte\, NC\; MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; National Gallery of Jamaica\; Pérez Art Museum Miami\, among others. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCDB Dissertation Defense Seminar> Ether Lipids Regulate Lysosomal Homeostasis
DESCRIPTION:Lysosomes are essential degradative and metabolic organelles that maintain cellular homeostasis through macromolecular turnover\, nutrient sensing\, and signaling. Lysosomal dysfunction underlies numerous human diseases\, including lysosomal storage disorders\, neurodegenerative diseases\, and cancers. However\, how lipid metabolism regulates lysosomal homeostasis remains poorly understood.\n\nHere\, we performed a genome-wide CRISPR screen in Mucolipidosis V (LYSET-deficient) cells and identified ether lipid synthesis as a key regulator of lysosomal homeostasis. Genetic or pharmacological inhibition of ether lipid synthesis reduced lysosome accumulation and partially restored lysosomal degradative capacity. Mechanistically\, ether lipid reduction partially restored the maturation of a subset of lysosomal hydrolases and enhanced lysosomal exocytosis\, thereby promoting lysosomal substrate clearance. These findings uncover a previously unrecognized mechanism by which lipid metabolism regulates lysosomal homeostasis and suggest new therapeutic opportunities for lysosomal storage disorders.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Theory and Methods for Conditional Diffusion Models
DESCRIPTION:will study conditional sampling with diffusion models under linear constraints\, with a focus on understanding how a pre-trained unconditional diffusion model can be used to sample from a conditional distribution. I will present a normal–tangent decomposition of the conditional score that separates the effect of the observed constraints from the remaining uncertainty in the distribution. This decomposition provides a way to characterize the discrepancy between the unconditional and conditional diffusion dynamics\, and to relate this discrepancy to information-theoretic quantities.\n\nBased on this perspective\, I will introduce a sampling method that combines projected Langevin initialization on the constraint set with guided reverse diffusion. I will discuss theoretical and information-theoretic guarantees for the resulting sampler\, as well as numerical results illustrating its behavior on linear inverse problems. At the end\, I will also briefly discuss related results showing how the information content and structural properties of a target distribution can reduce the dependence of diffusion sampling on the ambient dimension.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us as Professor Kim Scheppele delivers the 2026 Law & Ethics Lecture\, co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Law School and the U-M Department of Philosophy. \n\nSince Donald Trump returned to the presidency\, his administration has operated with lightning speed to upend many certainties of law and politics. How can we understand these changes? In this lecture\, Prof. Scheppele will argue that we need to deconstruct attacks on the rule of law into different streams\, each run by different people with different legal logics. Some policies stretch preexisting law in unrecognizable ways\, while other policies seek to destroy law without replacement. Some policies enforce the law selectively\, putting the president and his inner circle above the law even as they subject others to harsh enforcement of that same law. In perhaps the most revolutionary aspect of the Trump presidency\, some within his administration have launched a counter-constitutional revolution to remake the US Constitution as we knew it\, replacing the prior system of checks and balances with a super-presidency\, thus destroying democracy by law. By disentangling these different strands\, we can see that Trump is not a “he” but a “they.” Given the multiplicity of attacks on the rule of law\, we may need a multipronged effort to restore the rule of law when the Trump era is over.
