        "description":"\n\nAugust 24 - October 18, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It\u2019s a course where, per the syllabus, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying, exploring, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" Each student takes their own path, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end of the semester, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \n\nThe works in this year\u2019s exhibition engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory, identity, materiality, ecology, technology, labor, social relationships, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches.         "description":"There are nearly one million refugees currently living in Poland. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what, in Poland, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*, *The Guardian*, *The Wall Street Journal*, *The Washington Post*, *El Pais*, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-term personal projects, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project \u201cToo Precious to Leave Behind\u201d.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us.         "description":"This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr \u2014 the books that don\u2019t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday, May 14th, 5pm - 6:30pm, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.",

        "description":"Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter, theater stage designer, teacher, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons, these paintings, along with his later nonconformist work, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars, the 1917 revolution, and political terror, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable, neglected, and marginalized people: children, the elderly, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy, dignity, and admiration.  \n\n\u201cFor my father, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else.         "description":"The Institute for the Humanities\u2019 presentation of Cosmo Whyte\u2019s* Ballad for Rodney* (2024) is organized as part of Whyte\u2019s upcoming solo exhibition at the Stamps Gallery entitled *Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet, Beyond the Eye*.\n\nThis \u201ccurtain painting\u201d operates simultaneously as painting and sculpture, inviting the viewer to physically engage with the surface, passing through to another layer underneath. \n\nAbout the artist\nCosmo Whyte (b. 1982, St. Andrew, Jamaica) is an interdisciplinary artist who employs drawing, installation, and sculpture to create conceptual work exploring interstitial subjectivity through an engagement with both intimate and public archives, as well as Black spatiality and forms of resistance. He received his MFA from the University of Michigan. In 2022, he joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture as an assistant professor.\n\n\nWhyte\u2019s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at MOCA Georgia, Atlanta, GA; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; The High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; The Drawing Center, New York, NY; Atlanta Contemporary, Atlanta, GA; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; and the National Gallery of Jamaica, Kingston, Jamaica, among others. His work is in public museum collections including the High Museum, Atlanta, GA; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; International African American Museum, Charlotte, NC; MOCA Georgia, Atlanta, GA; National Gallery of Jamaica; P\u00e9rez Art Museum Miami, among others.         "description":"How Blood Gets to Where It's Needed: Mathematical Modeling of Cardiovascular Regulation\nAbstract:\nOn a daily basis, we experience our cardiovascular system continuously adapting to our environment, whether it be due to exercise, stress, or standing up too quickly. Cardiovascular regulation is driven by complex control mechanisms acting in concert at both systemic (such as neurohormonal control) and organ levels (such as local autoregulation) to dynamically govern tissue perfusion. However, our understanding of cardiovascular regulation remains largely phenomenological due to the challenges associated with unraveling the systemic and local control mechanisms operating simultaneously across vastly different spatial and temporal scales. Our research group aims to provide a better quantitative understanding of cardiovascular regulation by leveraging state-of-the-art animal models to develop novel mathematical models. \n\nIn this seminar, I will first present our work on modeling dynamic cardiovascular adaptations during varying degrees of hemorrhage. We developed a closed-loop, lumped-parameter model to simulate both systemic and organ-specific control mechanisms that compensate for blood loss and redistribute blood flow towards vital organs (e.g., the brain). I will then discuss our efforts to develop a microstructurally motivated model of autoregulation in the coronary circulation, which integrates principles of coronary physiology into a vascular biomechanical framework. We show how a microstructurally motivated model can be used to investigate coronary circulation autoregulation in both health and disease. Collectively, this seminar will demonstrate how mathematical modeling deepens our understanding of cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology, and how it can be leveraged to engineer next-generation treatment strategies..     \nBio:\nMatthew Eden is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Computational Vascular Biomechanics Laboratory within the University of Michigan\u2019s Department of Surgery, Section of Vascular Surgery. His research focuses on developing multi-scale physiological models of cardiovascular hemodynamics and regulation, including coronary autoregulation and hemodynamic responses to hemorrhage. He earned his Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Northeastern University, where he leveraged experiments and computation to investigate the cardiopulmonary health consequences of inhaling wildfire smoke and e-cigarette aerosols. He holds B.S. degrees from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in mechanical engineering and applied mathematics.",

        "description":"David Zerkel and Liz Ames will present a recital of original works written for tuba and piano. The program will begin with the outstanding Tuba Sonata written by Norwegian composer Trygve Madsen. The Madsen will be followed by a very expressionistic work, Lamento, by the great Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina. The first half will close with John Harmon's Silhouette for tuba and piano. The main feature of the second half is the Tuba Concerto written by the American Trombonist Raymond Premru. The piece was composed in memory of the late John Fletcher, a British tubist who has served as David's inspiration throughout his professional career. It is an unusually touching piece. The second half also includes a hauntingly beautiful work by the Japanese-Canadian composer, Cait Nishimura.\n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS\n\nDAVID ZERKEL is Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at the University of Michigan, leading an active career as both a performer and educator. Before his arrival at Michigan, he taught in a similar position at the University of Georgia. His students have distinguished themselves by winning international and national competitions and attaining positions with professional performing organizations. He is a Past President of the International Tuba Euphonium Association and was selected as the inaugural recipient of the ITEA Teaching Award.\n\nDavid began his performing career as a member of the United States Army Field Band and The United States Army Band, both located in Washington, DC. He has had the good fortune to perform with many orchestras, to include the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the St. Louis Symphony, the Utah Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the National Symphony, and the Baltimore Symphony. He was a founding member of the Washington Symphonic Brass, and has performed in concert with the Burning River Brass and the Brass Band of Battle Creek.\n\nDavid has performed as a featured soloist at many workshops and symposia, including the Leonard Falcone Festival, several International Tuba Euphonium Conferences, and the United States Army Band Tuba Euphonium Workshop. In addition, he has performed as a solo recitalist at many of the leading colleges and conservatories in the United States. He has released three solo CDs: *American Music for Tuba*, *Tuba Helper*, and his latest CD, *Journey*, which features the music of John Stevens.\n\nDavid has served as the President of the International Tuba Euphonium Association. He lives in Dexter, Michigan with his lovely bride, Kristin.\n\nLIZ AMES is a celebrated pianist who is passionate about performing and working with instrumentalists, vocalists and composers. She has concertized worldwide, including in Belgium, the United Kingdom, Canada, Spain, Peru and France. Ames has served as a staff pianist for the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference and the United States Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium. Her publications and projects include piano reductions of large-scale works, including Wynton Marsalis\u2019s Tuba Concerto, Henry Brant\u2019s *Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra*, and concertos and oratorios by Steven Bryant, Joel Puckett, Donald Grantham, David Biedenbender, and John Mackey. Ames completed her doctorate in collaborative piano at Arizona State University and is currently living in Ann Arbor, Michigan, performing with musicians throughout the Midwest and serving on the collaborative piano staff at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. She has recorded for Neuma Records, XAS Records, and Naxos Records, among others.",
