DESCRIPTION:\n\nAugust 24 - October 18\, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1\, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \n\nThe works in this year’s exhibition engage a wide range of questions and concerns. DESCRIPTION:There are nearly one million refugees currently living in Poland. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine\, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia\, Latin America\, Africa\, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different\, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*\, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)\, Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what\, in Poland\, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw\, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*\, *The Guardian*\, *The Wall Street Journal*\, *The Washington Post*\, *El Pais*\, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR\, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-term personal projects\, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss\, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion\, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project “Too Precious to Leave Behind”.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Muted Volumes: Book-Objects\, Patterned Papers\, and the Closed Stacks of Buhr
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:The Institute for the Humanities’ presentation of Cosmo Whyte’s* Ballad for Rodney* (2024) is organized as part of Whyte’s upcoming solo exhibition at the Stamps Gallery entitled *Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye*.\n\nThis “curtain painting” operates simultaneously as painting and sculpture\, inviting the viewer to physically engage with the surface\, passing through to another layer underneath. \n\nAbout the artist\nCosmo Whyte (b. 1982\, St. Andrew\, Jamaica) is an interdisciplinary artist who employs drawing\, installation\, and sculpture to create conceptual work exploring interstitial subjectivity through an engagement with both intimate and public archives\, as well as Black spatiality and forms of resistance. He received his MFA from the University of Michigan. In 2022\, he joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture as an assistant professor.\n\n\nWhyte’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, including at MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; The High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA\; The Drawing Center\, New York\, NY\; Atlanta Contemporary\, Atlanta\, GA\; Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France\; and the National Gallery of Jamaica\, Kingston\, Jamaica\, among others. His work is in public museum collections including the High Museum\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; International African American Museum\, Charlotte\, NC\; MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; National Gallery of Jamaica\; Pérez Art Museum Miami\, among others. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Customers and Retail Growth (with Liran Einav\, Jon Levin\, Raviv Murciano-Goroff\, and Chris Tonetti)
DESCRIPTION:Using Visa debit and credit card transactions in the U.S. from 2017 to 2021\, we document the importance of customers in accounting for sales variation across merchants\, across stores within retail chains\, and over time for individual merchants and stores. The number of unique customers\, as opposed to transactions per customer or dollar sales per transaction\, consistently accounts for about 80% of sales variation. DESCRIPTION:Talk Description: Climate change is not coming. It is here. We have seen it starkly in northern Michigan over the last three years.\n\nIn late March 2025\, a 60-hour freezing rain event coated far northern Michigan in up to an inch of ice\, collapsing the power grid\, cutting running water and communication to rural communities\, and leaving thousands without heat as temperatures then plunged. Ice up to an inch thick built on the Mackinac Bridge\, the most significant icing in its history\, forcing closures as slabs the size of garage doors fell from the cables. In June 2026\, four to seven inches of rain fell within hours across the Lower Peninsula\, triggering a state of emergency in three counties. Weeks later\, wildfire smoke drove July trip cancellations\, contributing to more than $6.6 billion in economic damages statewide\, the highest of any state.\nThis panel focuses on the changing winter behind events like these. Northern Michigan is not simply losing snow. It is losing winter as a season we can count on. Warmer air\, declining lake ice\, shorter snow cover\, and more frequent freeze-thaw cycles are restructuring winter into something more episodic. A December snowstorm\, a January thaw\, rain\, ice\, then another Arctic outbreak.\n\nThe consequences extend across the systems the region relies on. Thinning snowpack can expose soils and roots to freezing\, shift wildlife distributions\, and reduce plant productivity at large spatial scales. Winter recreation\, forestry\, and tourism all depend on cold and snow persisting long enough to plan around. For people\, longer tick activity windows can increase Lyme disease risk\, while the loss of reliable winter changes the traditions that connect families and communities to this place.\n\nOur panelists will explore these ecological\, economic\, and human dimensions together\, because the future of Michigan winters is not one story. DESCRIPTION:Lauren K. Williams received an AB from Harvard University and a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She was a faculty member at the University of California\, Berkeley\, from 2009 to 2018\, prior to returning to Harvard University\, where she is currently the Dwight Parker Robinson Professor of Mathematics. Williams has received various honors\, including a MacArthur fellowship\, a Guggenheim fellowship\, and an NSF Career Grant. While her main research area is algebraic combinatorics (including total positivity and cluster algebras)\, her work is connected to shallow water waves (via soliton solutions of the KP equation)\, traffic flow and protein synthesis (the asymmetric simple exclusion process)\, and scattering amplitudes in high-energy physics. She is one of the editors of First Proof\, which has been benchmarking the ability of AI models to create mathematical proofs.\n\nFirst Proof provides objective\, up-to-date assessments of AI models’ ability to prove specified mathematical statements. This talk will review findings from the project’s first two problem batches and outline plans for its next phase.

You only need to attend one. The first audition is on Tuesday\, September 8th from 9-11pm\, and the second is on Sunday\, September 13th from 2-4pm. DESCRIPTION:Terry is a seasoned professional musician. Starting from a young age in his family band\, Terry’s music career has taken him to all four corners of the country and beyond as a player and band leader\, including a 2-year stint as lead guitarist with surf legends Jan & Dean\, and 3 years of national touring with his original rock & roll band\, The Bead Band. In the 1990’s\, after several years living in Los Angeles\, he spent 6 years studying classical guitar at the University of Denver and the Cleveland Institute of Music. At the turn of the century Terry returned to his roots creating several solo CDs featuring a fusion of styles and players – and all original songs. Terry has been artistic director and musical director for many initiatives including the live radio show\, Radio Free Bacon\, and has toured the US and Canada extensively as part of various groups.
