DESCRIPTION:\n\nAugust 24 - October 18\, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1\, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \n\nThe works in this year’s exhibition engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory\, identity\, materiality\, ecology\, technology\, labor\, social relationships\, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches. DESCRIPTION:There are nearly one million refugees currently living in Poland. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine\, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia\, Latin America\, Africa\, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different\, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*\, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)\, Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what\, in Poland\, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw\, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*\, *The Guardian*\, *The Wall Street Journal*\, *The Washington Post*\, *El Pais*\, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR\, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-term personal projects\, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss\, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion\, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project “Too Precious to Leave Behind”.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Muted Volumes: Book-Objects\, Patterned Papers\, and the Closed Stacks of Buhr
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:The Institute for the Humanities’ presentation of Cosmo Whyte’s* Ballad for Rodney* (2024) is organized as part of Whyte’s upcoming solo exhibition at the Stamps Gallery entitled *Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye*.\n\nThis “curtain painting” operates simultaneously as painting and sculpture\, inviting the viewer to physically engage with the surface\, passing through to another layer underneath. \n\nAbout the artist\nCosmo Whyte (b. 1982\, St. Andrew\, Jamaica) is an interdisciplinary artist who employs drawing\, installation\, and sculpture to create conceptual work exploring interstitial subjectivity through an engagement with both intimate and public archives\, as well as Black spatiality and forms of resistance. He received his MFA from the University of Michigan. In 2022\, he joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture as an assistant professor.\n\n\nWhyte’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, including at MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; The High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA\; The Drawing Center\, New York\, NY\; Atlanta Contemporary\, Atlanta\, GA\; Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France\; and the National Gallery of Jamaica\, Kingston\, Jamaica\, among others. His work is in public museum collections including the High Museum\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; International African American Museum\, Charlotte\, NC\; MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; National Gallery of Jamaica\; Pérez Art Museum Miami\, among others. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantum Research Institute | Integrated Nonlinear and Quantum Photonics with Heterogeneous III-V-on-Silicon Nitride
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96563776551?jst=2\nIn-Person: West Hall\, Room 411\n\nAbstract: Integrated photonics is revolutionizing how we generate\, manipulate\, and transmit quantum information. In this presentation\, I’ll highlight recent results on heterogeneous integration of III-V nonlinear and quantum photonic components with ultra-low-loss silicon nitride circuits\, including: (1) multiplexing arrays of quantum sources for reconfigurable multi-user quantum networking\, cryptography\, and clock synchronization\, (2) chip-scale squeezed microcombs for quantum-enhanced detectors and sensors\, and (3) low-threshold power optical parametric oscillators and amplifiers for applications requiring high gain with a low-noise figure of merit. I’ll conclude with future directions envisioned for engineering heterogeneous photonic systems in the next 5-10 years.\n\nBio: Galan Moody is a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of California Santa Barbara. Prior to this\, he was a Research Scientist (2015-2019) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder\, Colorado\, and a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow at NIST (2013-2015). He received a PhD in Physics (2013) and a BSc in Engineering Physics (2008) from the University of Colorado Boulder. He is a recipient of a US Air Force Young Investigator Program award (2020)\, an NSF CAREER award (2021)\, an ACS Rising Star in Photonics Award (2024)\, and the UCSB College of Engineering Outstanding Faculty Award (2024). He serves as a thrust co-lead and on the executive committee for UCSB’s NSF Quantum Foundry\, is the Associate Director for UCSB’s Institute for Energy Efficiency\, chairs several conferences including FiOLS and CLEO\, and is on the editorial board for PRX Quantum and IOP’s Journal of Physics: Photonics.

DESCRIPTION:Westphal has served on the faculty since 2004. A Broadway music director\, conductor and keyboard player\, her Broadway credits include The Lion King\, A Christmas Story\, Miss Saigon and The Gershwins’ Fascinating Rhythm. During a 2018–19 sabbatical\, she directed the music for the first national tour of the Tony Award-winning Come From Away. She also conducted the national tour of A Christmas Story\, toured as pianist with Andrea Bocelli\, and has performed as a keyboardist on over a dozen Broadway national tours. Westphal has also developed new musicals with Glenn Frey of The Eagles and Graham Russell of Air Supply.

During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. DESCRIPTION:Dean\, School of Social Work and the Phillip Fellin Collegiate Professor of Social Work at the University of Michigan\n\nDean Angell will describe her background as a social work educator and scholar. She will talk about how U-M\, a leader in social work education for more than a century\, is building on its tradition of excellence through the School of Social Work’s high-impact research\, diverse curriculum options and commitment to strong community collaboration. Founded as a distinct school in 1951\, the school has graduated more than 18\,000 students and has been consistently ranked #1 by U.S. News and World Report since 2012. Prior to becoming a dean\, Angell conducted research and taught courses on behavioral health\, focusing on serious mental illness and its intersection with substance abuse and the criminal justice system. Prior to joining U-M in 2022\, Angell served as dean of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work. DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nMRI brings together physics\, engineering\, and clinical medicine\, creating a wide range of career opportunities. I will share my own path from academic research and industry collaboration to product management and marketing\, including what an MBA added to a technical background. I will also look at where the field is heading through both technical and business lenses: AI throughout the imaging chain\, ultra-high-performance gradients\, and low-helium systems expanding patient access.     \nBio:\nDr. Yuchi Liu is an MR Product Manager at Siemens Healthineers. She earned her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University\, then spent several years at Case Western and Michigan Medicine as a post-doctoral research fellow developing quantitative cardiac MR methods. In 2023 she joined Siemens Healthineers as a collaboration scientist\, supporting Cleveland Clinic on cardiac diffusion imaging. She also holds an MBA from the Ross School of Business at University of Michigan. Earlier this year\, she transitioned to her current role\, leading marketing and product management for the 3T MR scanner portfolio and neurology at Siemens Healthineers.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DE Seminar: Mathematical Analysis of Many-Body Quantum Simulation with Coulomb Potentials
DESCRIPTION:Efficient simulation of many-body quantum dynamics is central to advances in physics\, chemistry\, and quantum computing. A fundamental question is whether the simulation cost can scale polynomially with system size in the presence of realistic interactions. In this talk\, we focus on many-body quantum systems with Coulomb interactions\, which play a central role in electronic and molecular dynamics. We prove that first-order Trotterization for such unbounded Hamiltonians admits a polynomial dependence on the number of particles in the continuum limit\, with a convergence rate of order $1/4$—in contrast to prior Trotter analyses for bounded operators\, which diverge in this limit. The result holds for all initial wavefunctions in the domain of the Hamiltonian. This $1/4$-order rate is optimal\, as previous work shows that it can be saturated by the ground state of the hydrogen atom. Moreover\, higher-order Trotter formulas do not improve the worst-case scaling. We also discuss additional regularity conditions on the initial state under which the original Trotter convergence rate can be recovered. Finally\, we discuss our recent development on the spatial error and algorithm complexities.

DESCRIPTION:Studying the biology of endangered plants can provide insights into what these species need to thrive\, especially in the face of climate change and other human impacts. This talk will focus on more than 30 years of study of an endangered cactus\, Echinocactus horizonthalonius var. nicholii\, as my colleagues and I have worked to understand the biology\, ecology\, and threats to this little-known species. I'll also talk about the value and challenge of long-term ecological research and my experience teaching at a small liberal arts college.

DESCRIPTION:Organ systems are composed of unique cell types that actively coordinate to enable higher order functions. Even slight deviances in the molecular or cellular states of these systems can result in debilitating disorders whose severity\, treatment course\, and overall treatment outcome vary widely from patient to patient. This level of complexity likely contributes to promising therapeutics failing within clinical trials and\, thus\, require further exploration. Thus\, the Neumann lab focuses on developing and applying multimodal imaging and profiling techniques to study complex human diseases\, such as renal cell carcinoma\, Alzheimer’s Disease\, and spina bifida. Beyond disease\, we also develop methods for spatially assessing exogenous agents\, including pharmaceuticals\, toxins\, and plastics\, within organ and whole animal models.

Blues and R&B are laced with punk spirit and film-noir moods to create the band’s singular “garage cabaret” sound. The Claudettes have earned worldwide acclaim with their recordings and concerts that are equal parts heart\, musicianship and theatrical flair. DESCRIPTION:Poetry Night in Ann Arbor is a dynamic poetry variety show that brings together student poets from the campus and community with two spectacular renowned poets—Matthew Olzmann and Vievee Francis—for a lively and entertaining evening of phenomenal poetry.\n\nMatthew Olzmann is the author of Constellation Route as well as two previous collections of poetry. His next book An Oral History of the Flat Earth is forthcoming from Alice James Books in 2027. A recipient of fellowships from Kundiman\, MacDowell\, and the National Endowment for the Arts\, Olzmann’s poems have appeared in the New York Times\, Best American Poetry\, The Pushcart Prizes\, Kenyon Review\, and elsewhere. He is an assistant professor at Dartmouth College in the Department of English and Creative Writing.\n\nVievee Francis is the author of four books of poetry: The Shared World (Northwestern University Press\, 2023)\; Forest Primeval (TriQuarterly Books\, 2015)\, winner of the 2017 Kingsley Tufts Award and the Hurston Wright Legacy Award\; Horse in the Dark (Northwestern University Press\, 2012)\, winner of the Cave Canem Northwestern University Press Poetry Prize\; and Blue-Tail Fly (Wayne State University Press\, 2006). Forthcoming are a memoir\, Ugly\, and her fifth volume of poetry\, Cleaning the Houses of the Dead. Her work has appeared in numerous print and online journals\, textbooks\, and anthologies including Poetry\, Best American Poetry\, spin.com\, and Angles of Ascent: A Norton Anthology of Contemporary African American Poetry. Born in West Texas and raised in Metropolitan Detroit\, Francis\, along with composer Jonathan Berger and artist Enrico Riley\, wrote the libretto for the transdisciplinary opera The Ritual of Breath. She received a 2024 Guggenheim Fellowship and the 2021 Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry. She has also been the recipient of a Rona Jaffe Award and a Kresge Fellowship. She is a Professor of English and Creative Writing at Dartmouth College.\n\nMatthew and Vievee will be joined by outstanding student poets from the University of Michigan and Ann Arbor Public Schools\, with an opportunity for volunteers from the audience to get involved in an on-stage haiku battle.\n\nThis event is organized by Lloyd Scholars for Writing and the Arts (LSWA) with additional support from the Arts Initiative.
