        "description":"\n\nAugust 24 - October 18, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It\u2019s a course where, per the syllabus, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying, exploring, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" Each student takes their own path, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end of the semester, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \n\nThe works in this year\u2019s exhibition engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory, identity, materiality, ecology, technology, labor, social relationships, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches.         "description":"There are nearly one million refugees currently living in Poland. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what, in Poland, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*, *The Guardian*, *The Wall Street Journal*, *The Washington Post*, *El Pais*, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-term personal projects, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project \u201cToo Precious to Leave Behind\u201d.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us.         "description":"Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter, theater stage designer, teacher, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons, these paintings, along with his later nonconformist work, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars, the 1917 revolution, and political terror, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable, neglected, and marginalized people: children, the elderly, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy, dignity, and admiration.  \n\n\u201cFor my father, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. As Spanish American nations declared independence and new canals intensified US expansion and British industrialization, many imagined the construction of an interoceanic canal as predestined.\n\nAlthough the idea of literally changing the world by connecting the oceans proved too revolutionary for the Age of Revolution, the quest itself changed history. Canal dreams prompted political transformations, financial crisis, recognition of new countries, concern about climate change, and more.         "description":"\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte\u2019s artistic practice: the archive, both personal and public, as a site of disturbance; and migration as a lived experience of refuge, refusal, and reinvention. In Whyte\u2019s work, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory, inheritance, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity, Whyte\u2019s work offers a timely meditation on memory, movement, and belonging.\n",

        "description":"Abstract:  In this seminar we discuss a unified framework that combines explainable deep learning, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) and foundation models to advance both understanding and control of turbulence, with direct implications for accelerated design and discovery. First, we will show how explainable deep learning techniques can be used to identify the flow features that are truly responsible for key turbulent processes in wall-bounded flows. By systematically interrogating trained neural networks, we uncover the most influential coherent structures driving momentum transport and drag. Our results reveal that classically studied structures (while important) provide only a partial and sometimes misleading perspective, motivating a more data-driven and physics-aware view of turbulence organization. Building on these insights, we will demonstrate how deep reinforcement learning can be used to actively control turbulent flows by targeting the dynamically relevant structures identified through explainability. This approach achieves over 30% drag reduction in canonical wall-bounded turbulence and extends naturally to more complex configurations, including turbulent wings, highlighting the scalability of learning-based control strategies. Finally, we will introduce a foundation-model-based framework for accelerated design, optimization and scientific discovery. By learning compact, interpretable latent representations of high-dimensional flow physics, these models (combined with agentic-AI systems) enable rapid exploration of design spaces, causal reasoning and closed-loop optimization, bridging the gap between expensive simulations, control and engineering decision making.         "description":"Hailing from Kennett, Missouri, David Nail is well-respected up and down Music Row. Some might even call him a \u201ctour de force\u201d as his songs pull no punches in evoking the demons with which he has wrestled through much of his life. \n\nThe GRAMMY-nominated multi-platinum singer\/songwriter\u2019s early releases, I\u2019m About To Come Alive, The Sound Of A Million Dreams, I\u2019m A Fire and Fighter, ignited his reputation as an innovator and creative risk-taker yet left Nail feeling restless. This led to the departure of the only record company home he\u2019d ever known, MCA Nashville, where he\u2019d formed friendships that endure even now. Through dealing with his own journey of mental health and the feeling of needing to \u201crebel against what people expect you to be,\u201d Nail began making his most \u201corganic\u201d work to date, David Nail & The Well Ravens, with Jason Hall and Andrew Petroff. That project liberated Nail and propelled him into his next adventure. Writing solo for the next few months led to his debut solo independent EP Oh, Mother, a reflective piece of work. Of the title track, Rolling Stone noted that \u201cthe song creeps in like a sunrise \u2014 quiet, restrained cello and keys are the only underpinning for Nail\u2019s powerful vocals at first. But then it slowly builds to something more massive and majestic.\u201d That release was followed by Bootheel 2020 and Bootheel 2021, projects dedicated to the singer\/songwriter\u2019s hometown in the \u201cbootheel\u201d of Missouri. Nail released an EP titled Best of Me in 2023 and the title track has seen heavy press support and country radio airplay. 2024 brought more touring than ever, two great single releases \u201cIf I Could Call\u201d and \u201cWhy\u201d featuring Aubrie Sellers. \n\nNail plans on releasing the start of an excitingly different and elevated album project this year leaving behind any self-imposed restrictions. In Nail\u2019s own words, \u201cMy philosophy has always been, I just hope to have a good enough year that I can have a next year while staying as true to myself as I possibly can.\u201d",

Robert Reynolds served as the 6th Director of Bands at the University of Michigan from 1975 to 2001, and then as the conductor of the University of Southern California's Wind Ensemble for another two decades after his retirement from U-M. He led the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings for much of its history and became known around the world for his expressive interpretations and as a champion of music for wind band.
