Culture facilitates human interaction by providing meaning to lived experience. Accounting for culture in both theories and methods potentially advances the study of health by connecting the macro and micro levels of human experience. Yet\, culture should be understood as dynamic and complex. It fundamentally shapes individuals and simultaneously is shaped by individuals. The importance of systematically attending to culture includes topics of values\, language\, immigration\, and society.\n\nTheories and methods that incorporate culture hold great potential for advancing the understanding of health outcomes and health trajectories in various global contexts.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on various aspects of culture and diverse groups living in the U.S. and across the globe to address the ways in which attending to culture helps clarify and overcome challenges to good health.\n\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. DESCRIPTION:\n\nAugust 24 - October 18\, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1\, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" \n\nStamps Lecturer & Student Exhibitions Coordinator Sally Clegg notes\, \"Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now?\" At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. The pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path: experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\n\nAs Course Coordinator\, Stamps Assistant Professor Pedram Baldari both teaches and works directly with all the faculty overseeing each section to collaboratively support the entire class. He offers this reflection on the diverse collection of work on view in this year’s exhibition.\n\nThese works engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory\, identity\, materiality\, ecology\, technology\, labor\, social relationships\, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches. While these subjects recur across the exhibition\, what stands out most is not a dominant thematic direction\, but a shared commitment to sustained inquiry.\n\nSYS is intentionally structured around a different learning model than project-based courses. Rather than responding to predetermined assignments\, students identify their own questions and spend an entire semester developing them through research\, experimentation\, critique\, and multiple iterations. The emphasis is not on arriving quickly at a resolved outcome\, but on cultivating the capacity to work independently\, remain responsive to new discoveries\, and allow the project itself to evolve through sustained engagement.\n\nAs a result\, the exhibition presents more than a collection of finished works. It documents different ways of investigating\, testing\, and refining ideas. Some students advance through material experimentation\, others through drawing\, installation\, performance\, digital media\, social engagement\, or speculative approaches. Each project reflects a distinct methodology that has developed through repeated cycles of making\, reflection\, critique\, and revision. In a sense\, the dialectical process generated by the nature of this course is the most significant thread connecting this year’s exhibition. DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan.  Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.  \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space.  In patterns that support the artwork’s theme\, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.

DESCRIPTION:There are nearly one million refugees currently living in Poland. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine\, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia\, Latin America\, Africa\, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different\, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*\, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)\, Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what\, in Poland\, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw\, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*\, *The Guardian*\, *The Wall Street Journal*\, *The Washington Post*\, *El Pais*\, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR\, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-term personal projects\, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss\, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion\, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project “Too Precious to Leave Behind”.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women\, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. DESCRIPTION:Lila Kadaj received her MFA from Wayne State University. Her work has been shown at numerous institutions\, including the Detroit Institute of Arts\, the Cranbrook Art Museum\, and the Arab American National Museum.  She spent nearly 27 years teaching art at Detroit Public schools.\n\nArtist statement: “When looking at a beautiful flower.  It’s just itself.  Just there......no .....it does not proclaim its purpose for blooming is to make people happy. It just is. Like standing in front of an easel and painting........just is.......no matter......what proclamations may be concluded to sway the viewer. Same thing goes for fine art.  It’s not about I am a woman....it’s not about I am a first generation Arab American.....it’s not about being a child of trauma....it’s not about a member of my family being gunned down on the street....it’s about being born a painter.....standing in front of my easel and working to create a \"Piece of Fine Art\". Not standing on some soap box and expecting my words to somehow qualify my painting. It’s the painting\, drawing or sculpture that must speak on its own.......on how the artist......via the intellect and muse uses the elements to create something distinct and first rate.   It can be quiet or loud. I see so much very weak work uplifted not for its quality but because it’s in fashion.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Art Exhibit: Hands on Fire
DESCRIPTION:Jim Cogswell: Hands on Fire\n\n**August 31 to October 9\, 2026**\n**Public Reception: Friday\, September 18\, 4:30 to 6:30 pm**\n\nJim Cogswell’s Hands on Fire is a solo exhibition of mixed media drawings at the Residential College Gallery at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The exhibition features sixty works on paper completed between 2024 and 2026.\n\nThis body of work responds to Greek Cypriot filmmaker Michael Cacoyannis’ cinematic adaptations of three tragedies by Euripides dealing with the Trojan War and its aftermath: Electra (1962)\, The Trojan Women (1971)\, and Iphigenia (1977). The work is in close conversation with Vinyl Euripides (2022)\, Cogswell’s adhesive vinyl installation on three floors of the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in Athens\, Greece\, which also responded to the cinematic trilogy. By following Cacoyannis’ adaptations\, Cogswell builds on a cross-cultural history of restaging these tragedies to examine the human suffering caused by war\, imperial overreach\, and abuse of power\; and the dehumanizing consequences of revenge as a course of justice.\n\nWithin each drawing multiple scenes from the three narratives are overlaid within single frames\, suggesting the unseen entanglements that bind these ancient stories into such a persistent vision of our human position.\n\nThe grid of paintings encircling the gallery proposes a linear narrative but delivers instead a sequence that loops and turns on itself\, a stuck frame that stutters until bursting in flames. The grid also evokes the net that is a central feature of the series--the web of fate and circumstance that governs each of our lives\, that determines who we are and what is possible for us at any given moment in history.\n\nThe drawings are also characterized by a repeated motif of hands as consuming flames. Hands have unlimited expressive and narrative potential. They testify to the centrality of making in the development of human cognition. They are reminders of the constructed world and the laborers responsible for bringing it into being. We use hands as a form of communication to shape and express our inner states. Hands teach us to feel and to reason\, to count and to indicate. They give us agency\, as creators but also as destroyers. DESCRIPTION:The Institute for the Humanities’ presentation of Cosmo Whyte’s* Ballad for Rodney* (2024) is organized as part of Whyte’s upcoming solo exhibition at the Stamps Gallery entitled *Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye*.\n\nThis “curtain painting” operates simultaneously as painting and sculpture\, inviting the viewer to physically engage with the surface\, passing through to another layer underneath. \n\nAbout the artist\nCosmo Whyte (b. 1982\, St. Andrew\, Jamaica) is an interdisciplinary artist who employs drawing\, installation\, and sculpture to create conceptual work exploring interstitial subjectivity through an engagement with both intimate and public archives\, as well as Black spatiality and forms of resistance. He received his MFA from the University of Michigan. In 2022\, he joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture as an assistant professor.\n\n\nWhyte’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, including at MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; The High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA\; The Drawing Center\, New York\, NY\; Atlanta Contemporary\, Atlanta\, GA\; Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France\; and the National Gallery of Jamaica\, Kingston\, Jamaica\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Visiting artist Olayami Dabls is a storyteller\, curator\, educator\, and mentor. He is the founder of the MBAD African Bead Museum in Detroit. Through material culture\, Dabls presents commentary on the past\, present\, and future from African and African-American perspectives\, with the understanding that generations of African ancestors used visual materials to convey information about their identity as well as send messages for healing and protection. Dabls is a luminary\; for decades he has re-imagined what a museum space can be\, accessible to everyone\, free from the underpinnings of colonialism and the Western\, often white\, frame. *Grand Vision* includes a conceptual installation in the Gallery\, presenting Dabls’s own work in visual conversation with African beads and artifacts from Dabls’s Bead Museum collections. \n\nAdditionally\, Dabls’s iconic outdoor sculpture *Iron Teaching Rocks Table Manners* will be installed on the U-M campus grounds near UMMA\, at the intersection of State Street and South University from September 17- October 11\, 2026. The project’s range intends to more fully articulate the many facets of Dabls’ creative practice\, and the overlay of art\, history\, identity\, community\, and healing.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Applied Physics | Bioinspired Materials Design for Adaptation to Extreme Environments
DESCRIPTION:Engineering materials deployed in realistic environments (e.g.\, extreme cold weather\, marine environments\, biologically active fluids\, complex mechanical loads\, etc.) routinely fail not from a single dominant stressor but from the compounding effects of environmental extremes in real-world applications. However\, many organisms in Nature have evolved hierarchical\, multiscale surface architectures and passive self-regulating mechanisms to resist icing\, deter biological attachment\, and self-repair their structure after mechanical damage. In this talk\, I will present two active projects in our research group where we are studying bioinspired physical and chemical mechanisms for adaptation to extreme cold weather and to marine environments. We have developed a large library of natural biomolecules and bioinspired surfaces that inhibit the nucleation of ice (either by depressing the freezing point of aqueous solutions or by inhibiting ice recrystallization) and/or reduce the adhesion of ice to surfaces\, and have developed automated high-throughput instrumentation to screen synergistic combinations of natural and bioinspired compounds and accelerate the discovery of new anti-icing materials and strategies. Translating these strategies into synthetic materials design provides new opportunities for climate resilience\, energy efficiency\, and protection from extreme cold environments across industries\, including healthcare\, transportation\, space heating\, and defense.\n\n\nBio: Abdon Pena-Francesch is an assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Michigan. He leads the BioInspired Materials Lab\, an interdisciplinary research group working on materials science\, polymer chemistry\, and soft matter engineering to develop solutions for healthcare\, robotics\, and the environment. He obtained his PhD from Penn State University and was a Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Germany. His work has been recognized by multiple awards including the AFOSR Young Investigator Program Award\, ACS PMSE Early Investigator Award\, ACS PRF New Investigator Award\, Materials Today Rising Star Award\, MRS Sustainability in Action Award\, and the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers.

How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? DESCRIPTION:Dark matter has so far revealed itself in exactly one way: through gravity. In this talk\, I will argue that this makes the distribution of dark matter our only positive signal — and that mapping it precisely may be our most direct route to understanding what dark matter is. Galactic dynamics is no longer data-limited but model-limited\, and the assumption most in need of revision\, underlying nearly all of our models\, is that galaxies are in equilibrium. I will present recent work leveraging Gaia DR3 that reveals a declining stellar rotation curve\, show how underestimated errors in Jeans modeling bias these results\, and how simulations let us build a more robust treatment that avoids tensions with other probes of the density profile. I will then turn to dwarf galaxies\, where the kinematic data will not substantially improve and only better inference can extract the physics: I will present GraphNPE\, a graph neural network method that recovers dark matter density profiles from sparse stellar kinematics\, revealing a hint of a core in Boötes I\, consistent with self-interacting dark matter. Finally\, I will turn to the local velocity distribution\, where the Milky Way's merger history imprints substructure that the Standard Halo Model does not capture\, and use mutual information to show that this history is itself progressively erased from stellar dynamics — setting a fundamental limit on what the Galaxy can ever tell us. Together\, these results outline a program of inference that assumes no more than the data supports and extracts no less than it contains\, arriving just as Gaia DR4 and the next generation of spectroscopic surveys come online.

Unlike the standard Benjamin-Ono equation\, the modified version is not known to be completely integrable\, so we cannot rely on integrable systems tools. First\, to manage the nonlocal Hilbert transform in the linear part of the equation\, we split it using positive and negative frequency projections. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Ottoman Greek Settlement in the Mitten State
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Topalidis will present the historical events surrounding the migration and settlement of Ottoman Greeks in Michigan. The lecture will contextualize these events through the lens of Social Memory Theory and emphasize the erasure of migrant and refugee identity writ large. To achieve this\, the lecture will combine macro-level findings from extant scholarship with micro-level novel evidence from the Ottoman Greeks of the United States Digital History Project at Flagler College. \n\nThe lecture will cover the following subjects:\n•	The displacement of Ottoman Greek migrants from their communities during World War I and the Greco-Turkish War.\n• Experiences of Ottoman Greek migrants fleeing from the cities of Izmir\, Ordu\, Şarköy\, Semendire\, and Ürgüp.\n• Experiences of Ottoman Greeks during their settlement in Michigan.\n• Experiences of second- and third-generation descendants of Ottoman Greeks during their formative years in Michigan.\n\nDr. Yiorgo Topalidis received a doctorate in Sociology from the University of Florida in 2022. Yiorgo’s research interests are emigration from the Ottoman Empire to the US and White identity construction\, contestation\, and transgenerational memory transfer. He is currently working on a monograph that explores the social construction of Ottoman Greek migrant identity in an early-20th-century U.S. context as a case study for decoupling Whiteness from White supremacist Whiteness.

DESCRIPTION:In 1987\, Gelfand and Serganova introduced Coxeter matroids. The type-A Coxeter matroid recovers the definition of matroids that we know and love. In this talk\, we'll look at the type-C Coxeter matroid and its relation to the type-A matroid. In the type-A case\, one of the notable (and very useful!) properties of matroids is their collection of cryptomorphic definitions. Interestingly\, though type-C versions of the cryptomorphic definitions have been conjectured\, proving their equivalence continues to be a work-in-progress.

DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the contradictions of transparency\, as a concept\, practice\, and aesthetic within the public sphere. Drawing on insights from her recently published monograph\, Nath offers a vision of document transparency located in social history\, American militarism\, and formations of power and difference. In this talk\, Nath traces the Cold War rhetoric that inspired the 1966 Freedom of Information Act through the contested world of transparency activism. By drawing on wide-ranging examples from antiracist organizing\, environmental initiatives\, investigative journalism\, and document diplomacy\, she offers a portrait of transparency as both an inscription of and challenge to power. \n\nAnjali Nath is Assistant Professor in Institute of Communication\, Culture\, Information\, and Technology at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Her work focuses on the visual culture of American militarism and the archives of state violence. Her book A Thousand Paper Cuts: US Empire and the Bureaucratic Life of War (Duke University Press\, 2025)\, is a critical reckoning with the racial and imperial work of paper.

DESCRIPTION:The Department of Winds & Percussion presents a tuba master class by guest artist Andy Smith.\n\nABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST\n\nANDY SMITH was appointed to the Lyric Opera of Chicago orchestra by Sir Andrew Davis in January of 2012. He began performing with the group in September of that same year. \n\nSmith\, from Amarillo\, Texas\, received his Bachelor of Music degree from Texas Tech University\, where he studied with Kevin Wass. He has also studied at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music with Dan Perantoni. \n\nPrior to winning the Lyric Opera position\, Smith was a highly sought after tubist in Texas\, where he performed regularly with the Lubbock and Big Spring Symphonies. In addition to his duties in the pit\, Smith has served as the principal tubist for the Grant Park Orchestra since 2018. Smith has also performed with many different orchestras in the Midwest including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra\, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra\, and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Smith is a Buffet Performing Artist.

DESCRIPTION:Jazz influenced indie pop\n\nOn the night of the Fourth of July\, fireworks over Mei Semones' Brooklyn block were competing with something more primal. Up and down the street\, dogs answered each burst with a long\, ragged howl of their own. Semones\, alone in her apartment with her guitar while the rest of the city celebrated outside\, found she didn't mind the solitude. The howling struck her less as a cry for help than as a kind of greeting: proof that she was never really by herself\, not with music always keeping her company. By morning\, she had the seed of the title track for her sophomore album\, Howl.\n \n\"Sometimes making music feels like howling into the universe\,\" Semones says. \"I make music because I like it\, because it feels instinctual — but it also connects me to people close and far. I like to think of this music as my howl.\"\n \nAt 26\, the Brooklyn-based Japanese American guitarist and singer-songwriter — already named an Artist to Watch by The New York Times and Stereogum\, and Artist You Need to Know by Rolling Stone and The FADER — has developed a sound that brings together jazz\, bossa nova\, samba and grungy math rock without treating any of them as separate worlds. Her bilingual songwriting works in much the same way. \n \nGrowing up in Ann Arbor\, Semones began playing piano at age four on an instrument gifted by her Japanese grandmother before picking up electric guitar at 11\, inspired in part by Marty McFly's performance of \"Johnny B. Goode\" in Back to the Future. Semones also spent summers as a child in Yokosuka\, Japan — where her grandmother lived — attending a local elementary school for two weeks each year and spending long afternoons catching cicadas\, playing soccer\, building things with mud\, and searching for rhinoceros beetles. Those unhurried childhood experiences would later shape her 2024 EP\, Kabutomushi\, named after the very beetles she would catch with her school friends in Yokosuka.\n \nIn high school\, she was introduced to jazz through greats like Charlie Parker\, John Coltrane\, Bud Powell\, Thelonious Monk and Wes Montgomery\, and around the same time she discovered bossa nova through João Gilberto's recordings.
