DESCRIPTION:\n\nAugust 24 - October 18\, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1\, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \n\nThe works in this year’s exhibition engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory\, identity\, materiality\, ecology\, technology\, labor\, social relationships\, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Camille Ann Brewer\, MFA\, MLIS
DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan.  Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.  \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space.  In patterns that support the artwork’s theme\, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.

DESCRIPTION:There are nearly one million refugees currently living in Poland. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine\, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia\, Latin America\, Africa\, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different\, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*\, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)\, Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what\, in Poland\, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw\, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*\, *The Guardian*\, *The Wall Street Journal*\, *The Washington Post*\, *El Pais*\, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR\, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-term personal projects\, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss\, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion\, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project “Too Precious to Leave Behind”.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Comics Beyond Sight
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women\, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. Through three distinct exhibit sections\, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.\n\nWhile enjoying the exhibit\, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. DESCRIPTION:Lila Kadaj received her MFA from Wayne State University. Her work has been shown at numerous institutions\, including the Detroit Institute of Arts\, the Cranbrook Art Museum\, and the Arab American National Museum.  She spent nearly 27 years teaching art at Detroit Public schools.\n\nArtist statement: “When looking at a beautiful flower.  It’s just itself.  Just there......no .....it does not proclaim its purpose for blooming is to make people happy. It just is. Like standing in front of an easel and painting........just is.......no matter......what proclamations may be concluded to sway the viewer. Same thing goes for fine art.  It’s not about I am a woman....it’s not about I am a first generation Arab American.....it’s not about being a child of trauma....it’s not about a member of my family being gunned down on the street....it’s about being born a painter.....standing in front of my easel and working to create a \"Piece of Fine Art\". Not standing on some soap box and expecting my words to somehow qualify my painting. It’s the painting\, drawing or sculpture that must speak on its own.......on how the artist......via the intellect and muse uses the elements to create something distinct and first rate.   It can be quiet or loud. I see so much very weak work uplifted not for its quality but because it’s in fashion.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:Visit the Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room to see historical materials that illustrate women’s changing relationship with food\, cooking\, and technology during the heady decade of the 1920s\, sandwiched between WWI and the Great Depression. This exhibit features materials from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive\, as well as select items from the Art\, Architecture\, and Engineering Special Collections and the Transportation History Collection.\n\nAs America rang in a new decade in the 1920s\, cookbook authors and appliance manufacturers stood ready to offer the newly emancipated and forward-thinking American woman a vision for her future\, a vision that would be scientifically  grounded\, speedy enough to make time for leisure as well as housework\, and guaranteed to bring fun to that most humdrum of chores: planning and preparing meals for a family three times a day\, 365 days a year.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Grand Vision
DESCRIPTION:Visiting artist Olayami Dabls is a storyteller\, curator\, educator\, and mentor. He is the founder of the MBAD African Bead Museum in Detroit. Through material culture\, Dabls presents commentary on the past\, present\, and future from African and African-American perspectives\, with the understanding that generations of African ancestors used visual materials to convey information about their identity as well as send messages for healing and protection. Dabls is a luminary\; for decades he has re-imagined what a museum space can be\, accessible to everyone\, free from the underpinnings of colonialism and the Western\, often white\, frame. *Grand Vision* includes a conceptual installation in the Gallery\, presenting Dabls’s own work in visual conversation with African beads and artifacts from Dabls’s Bead Museum collections. \n\nAdditionally\, Dabls’s iconic outdoor sculpture *Iron Teaching Rocks Table Manners* will be installed on the U-M campus grounds near UMMA\, at the intersection of State Street and South University from September 17- October 11\, 2026. The project’s range intends to more fully articulate the many facets of Dabls’ creative practice\, and the overlay of art\, history\, identity\, community\, and healing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 3): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:\n\nFrom September 2025 through December 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Southeast Michigan-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)\nPhase 3 (September 11 - December 11) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)\nPhase 3 \n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Abhishek Narula (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Nathan Byrne (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtist Statements/Bios\n\nAbhishek Narula\, Compressions \nCompressions is an installation comprised of 416 industrial-grade zip ties\, cinched around the entry pillar of the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference\, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it\, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie\, typically used to hang and bind other material\, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation\, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility\, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell\, to slow down\, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist\, designer\, and educator who works across sculpture\, installation\, sound\, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions\, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry\, exploring themes of labor\, precarity\, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology\, Science Gallery Detroit\, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia\, New Media Caucus (NMC)\, WaveFarm\, The Boulder Public Library\, The Hyde Park Art Center\, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press\, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI)\, International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA)\, among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne\, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image / object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne\, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist’s interest in embodied experience of space\, archival and site responsiveness\, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty\, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist / educator / curator currently based in Detroit\, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects\, he reimagines\, and explores within frameworks such as language\, the passage of time\, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal\, transformative\, and emotive states through materiality\, process\, and placement\, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer’s encounters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lecturer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

Documenting the May 18–27\, 1980 democratization uprising in Gwangju\, South Korea\, the collection captures the shift from peaceful student protests to military violence and unified citizen resistance\, carried out under a complete blackout as civilians and photojournalists risked their lives to photograph atrocities and smuggle film past cordons. Beyond serving as historical artifacts\, these preserved visual truths offer a living blueprint for popular resilience against authoritarianism\, transforming local trauma into a universal defense of human rights. Displaying these records at Michigan bridges 1980 Gwangju with our present moment\, inviting viewers to engage past resistance in the ongoing effort to defend democracy today.\n\n*Exhibition Composition*\nThe exhibit will be composed of a visual narrative comprised of six chronological sections and two additional special sections:\n\n1. Protest (May 5–16\, 1980): \nFollowing the collapse of Park Chung-hee’s military dictatorship in October\, 1979\, Gwangju students and citizens held peaceful rallies for campus autonomy and the end of martial law. Photos from this era show orderly marches and hopeful faces\, capturing a society on the brink of change before the structural contradictions shifted toward state-led violence. \n\n2. Suppression (May 18–19\, 1980): \nA new junta government led by Chun Doo-hwan extended martial law to the entire country on May 17. Students at Chonnam National University protested against the new junta government’s decision. State violence escalated as paratroopers\, who were deployed to Gwangju\, engaged student protesters. Streets became scenes of brutal beatings and kidnappings. Beyond documenting victims\, the images on display in this section serve as primary historical evidence and legal proof of the military's methods and the sudden transformation of citizens into targets of control. \n\n3. Uprising (May 20–21\, 1980): \nThe movement shifted into a popular struggle. Vehicles lined up in Gwangju’s main thoroughfare\, Geumnam-ro. This massive vehicle parade symbolized the people becoming active subjects of resistance. The military was given the order to use live ammunition against civilians. In reaction\, the city became a space of voluntary mobilization and citizens emerged as historical political actors. \n\n4. Resistance (May 22–26\, 1980): \nWhile isolated and cut off from communications\, Gwangju established an autonomous system of self-governance. Photos in this section testify to the efforts made to establish a sense of order based on solidarity—sharing food and donating blood—rather than chaos. The formation of this \"Daedong (Great Unity) Community\" and the visual documentation thereof serve as foundations of democracy in South Korea. \n\n5. Massacre (May 27\, 1980): \nThe uprising was crushed by a dawn military operation. While the armed resistance ended\, the resulting photographs of the aftermath reveal the stark reality of the massacre. These images became the catalyst for future truth-seeking movements and the pursuit of historical justice in South Korea. \n\n6. Mourning: \nScenes of coffins\, portraits\, and silent vigils represent a collective ethical gaze. During this period\, mourning was more than a display of grief\; it was a communal act used to redefine the city’s identity and establish new moral standards for justice.\n\n7. Special Section A: The Photographers\nThis special section highlights the domestic and international photographers who documented the uprising. This includes Korean journalists alongside US journalists Robin Moyer and Norman Thorpe\, French correspondents Patrick Chauvel and François Lochon\, and German cinematographer Jürgen Hinzpeter. Their images transcend simple reporting\, reflecting a moral commitment to record and a historical duty to ensure remembrance. Rather than viewing these photos solely as evidence\, the exhibition reinterprets them through a lens of photographic history—examining their context\, distribution\, and how they transformed raw records into social truth and collective memory.\n\n8. Special Section B: The Peace Corps: Americans Who Helped Gwangju\nWhen Gwangju was isolated under martial law in May 1980\, four American Peace Corps volunteers—Tim Warnberg\, David Lee Dolinger\, Judi Chamberlin\, and Paul Courtright—refused to leave\, choosing instead to assist the wounded\, aid foreign journalists\, and ultimately expose the truth to the world. Those pivotal ten days reshaped their lives into lifelong commitments to human rights\, inspiring decades of memoirs\, academic writings\, and testimonies. DESCRIPTION:Economics graduate student Austin Zhu performs on the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.

DESCRIPTION:Reconceiving Merit and Devotion at Work\, with Evidence-Based Illustrations from Academic Careers\n\nThis paper draws on research to argue that the cultural schema of work devotion – the cognitive\, emotional and moral understanding of work as a calling and an ostensible marker of merit– promises a workplace community and a sense of purpose. These rewards are consistent with the biological propensity for social connections\, which can help protect our physical and mental health. However\, the benefits of work devotion are not equally available to all socio-demographic groups. Further\, the work devotion mandate can feel coercive\, justify overwork\, deplete engagement with family and community\, and lead to moral distress. The paper presents evidence from the exemplar case of academic science to illustrate how small\, locally led changes in the department\, framed as consistent with professional values of merit and devotion\, could allow scholars to benefit more equally from the work devotion schema while also mitigating some of its detriments.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS 2026 Kavita Datla Memorial Lecture | Minor Cosmopolitanisms: Islam\, Urdu\, and Secularism in Postcolonial India
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/e73ZQ\n\nThis lecture seeks to build upon Kavita Datla’s work by exploring Urdu as a secular language of Islam. It does so by examining the life and intellectual biography of Syed Abid Husain (1896–1978)\, drawing upon his extensive corpus of works – including translations from German into Urdu\, creative literary writings\, and educational and political activism at Jamia Millia Islamia – to paint a portrait of a nationalist Indian Muslim in colonial and postcolonial India. Moving beyond the framework of nationalist history and adopting a global intellectual history approach\, my lecture aims to expand our geographical and conceptual understanding of ideas by mapping what I call the minor cosmopolitanisms of Husain’s intellectual journeys. I argue that Husain’s engagement with both German majoritarian and minority thought worlds offer valuable insights into the minority not merely as a political category but also as an intellectual and ethical one. Ultimately\, I contend that Husain’s life and writings provide unique insight on both the crises facing democracy and the potential for critical secularism and minority thought in an era dominated by majoritarian nationalism.\n\nDr. Razak Khan is a senior research fellow in global history at the Department of History\, Free University\, Berlin. He is part of the European Research Council funded project “Unfamiliar: Family\, Law\, and Democracy in South Asia.” It looks at the intersection of religion\, gender and sexual minorities\, and family law on the issues of marriage\, adoption\, and inheritance. His monograph *Minority Pasts: Locality\, Emotions\, and Belonging in Rampur* was published by (Oxford University Press\, 2022). He also edited the English translation edition of *The Incomparable Festival* (Penguin Random House India\, 2021) and co-edited *Nodes of Translation: Intellectual History between Modern India and Germany* (De Gruyter\, 2024). If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment\, communication\, and boundary setting. DESCRIPTION:CHHASSEM's co-director of Medicine and Art Professor Daniel Whibley leads a conversation with Vijay Gupta\, author\, classical violinist\, mental health advocate\, and founder of the Street Symphony. Inspired in part by the recent publication of Gupta's memoir *Restrung.* Daniel and Vijay will be joined in conversation by Dr. Lindsey Mortenson\, Executive Director of University Health and Counseling and the co-director of Michigan's Institute for Social Prescribing. Other panelists may be added. The event is free and open to the public. This event is co-presented with the Ann Arbor Symphony and the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SAPAC GROWE: Engendering Respectful Communities Workshops - SY26 - 27
DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. The Program Manager will communicate with students requesting exemptions via email and/or meet with students via zoom meetings to discuss their need for exemptions and provide any relevant and necessary resources.

DESCRIPTION:The Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, in collaboration with the Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory at the University of Michigan\, is pleased to present a special evening honoring the visit of Dr. Edda Fields-Black\, acclaimed historian and winner of the Pulitzer Prize in History for her book COMBEE: Harriet Tubman\, the Combahee River Raid\, and Black Freedom during the Civil War. \n\nDr. Fields-Black is also the executive producer and librettist of “Unburied\, Unmourned\, Unmarked: Requiem for Rice\,” a contemporary classical and multimedia symphonic work and the first symphonic work about slavery on rice plantations.  \n\nThis evening aims to combine the two projects by offering attendees the opportunity to view the night sky Harriet Tubman observed in her lifetime while listening to a portion of the symphony. Austin Edmister\, the Observatory’s Assistant Director of Astronomy\, will offer presentations about the night sky and celestial phenomena that Harriet would have experienced\, while Benedicte Boisseron\, Chair of the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, will provide the context of Harriet’s world from an ecological perspective.\n\nTours of the observatory will run on intervals throughout the evening. The Observatory’s exhibit\, “Fill the Ranks”: The Civil War and the University of Michigan\, will be available for viewing\, and telescope observing will be possible after sunset (weather permitting). \n\n\nOn October 1st at 4 p.m. in the Vandenberg Room of the Michigan League\, Dr. Fields-Black will present the DAAS Zora Neale Hurston Lecture for the Humanities\, participate in a booksigning/reception\, and attend a faculty dinner.

DESCRIPTION:Cast aside any and all expectations.\n\nSolo pianist Holly Bowling is an artist who repeatedly defies convention\, breaks ceilings\, and eludes simplistic labels\, while bringing virtuosic playing\, emotional immersion\, and a thirst for invention to everything that she does. Acclaimed by Rolling Stone and having jammed with a long list of impressive company (Bob Weir\, Jim James\, Warren Haynes\, John Scofield\, Branford Marsalis\, and many more)\, Holly has established herself as a virtuoso pianist with her own musical voice. \n\nHolly has fostered a strong sense of identity while musically shapeshifting to the task at hand\, from joining Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh for extended explorations of “Dark Star\,” to recording dance tracks with LP Giobbi. She is a frequent guest of Greensky Bluegrass\, with whom she recorded The Iceland Sessions EP in 2023 as well as appearing on the previous year’s Stress Dreams. Her solo piano arrangements span across genres\, featuring songs from The National and Nine Inch Nails to Phish and the Grateful Dead\, and have been featured in several independent films in addition to opening the door to performances at storied venues from Carnegie Hall to Red Rocks. \n\nIn 2015\, Holly arrived as an exciting outlier on Distillation Of A Dream: The Music Of Phish Reimagined For Solo Piano. A year later\, Better Left Unsung\, her sophomore release featuring the music of the Grateful Dead\, landed in the top 25 of Billboard’s Classical Album Chart.\n\nHolly co-founded improvisational rock outfit Ghost Light in 2018 with JRAD’s Tom Hamilton with whom she also released an instrumental duo album\, Lacuna\, in 2022. \n\nAfter releasing 2020’s Seeking All That’s Still Unsung (a second reimagining of Grateful Dead staples)\, Holly looks to flip the script once more with an upcoming album of original compositions.\n\nFans can count on her musical shapeshifting adventure continuing to cover new ground as she takes listeners with her into the unknown.
