DESCRIPTION:\n\nAugust 24 - October 18\, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1\, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" \n\nStamps Lecturer & Student Exhibitions Coordinator Sally Clegg notes\, \"Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now?\" At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. The pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path: experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\n\nAs Course Coordinator\, Stamps Assistant Professor Pedram Baldari both teaches and works directly with all the faculty overseeing each section to collaboratively support the entire class. He offers this reflection on the diverse collection of work on view in this year’s exhibition.\n\nThese works engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory\, identity\, materiality\, ecology\, technology\, labor\, social relationships\, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches. While these subjects recur across the exhibition\, what stands out most is not a dominant thematic direction\, but a shared commitment to sustained inquiry.\n\nSYS is intentionally structured around a different learning model than project-based courses. Rather than responding to predetermined assignments\, students identify their own questions and spend an entire semester developing them through research\, experimentation\, critique\, and multiple iterations. The emphasis is not on arriving quickly at a resolved outcome\, but on cultivating the capacity to work independently\, remain responsive to new discoveries\, and allow the project itself to evolve through sustained engagement.\n\nAs a result\, the exhibition presents more than a collection of finished works. It documents different ways of investigating\, testing\, and refining ideas. Some students advance through material experimentation\, others through drawing\, installation\, performance\, digital media\, social engagement\, or speculative approaches. Each project reflects a distinct methodology that has developed through repeated cycles of making\, reflection\, critique\, and revision. In a sense\, the dialectical process generated by the nature of this course is the most significant thread connecting this year’s exhibition. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Comics Beyond Sight
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women\, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. Through three distinct exhibit sections\, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.\n\nWhile enjoying the exhibit\, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. This retreat is designed to remove barriers to participation while creating space for reflection\, relaxation\, and authentic community. Through gentle hikes\, camp-cooked meals\, journaling\, mindfulness activities\, and meaningful conversation\, you'll discover the restorative power of spending intentional time outdoors. Register by Tuesday\, September 22\, 2026 to secure your spot! Cost: $400\n\nThe program takes place October 2–4\, 2026. Protest (May 5–16\, 1980): \nFollowing the collapse of Park Chung-hee’s military dictatorship in October\, 1979\, Gwangju students and citizens held peaceful rallies for campus autonomy and the end of martial law. Photos from this era show orderly marches and hopeful faces\, capturing a society on the brink of change before the structural contradictions shifted toward state-led violence. \n\n2. Suppression (May 18–19\, 1980): \nA new junta government led by Chun Doo-hwan extended martial law to the entire country on May 17. Students at Chonnam National University protested against the new junta government’s decision. State violence escalated as paratroopers\, who were deployed to Gwangju\, engaged student protesters. Streets became scenes of brutal beatings and kidnappings. Beyond documenting victims\, the images on display in this section serve as primary historical evidence and legal proof of the military's methods and the sudden transformation of citizens into targets of control. \n\n3. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. Please join us for the Carillon Rededication Recital on October 25 at 3:00 pm.*\n\nJonathan Lehrer performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower\, for a rededication recital in celebration of renovations over the summer.\n\nThe largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nhttps://record.umich.edu/articles/charles-baird-carillon-gets-its-voice-back/\n\nGUEST ARTIST BIO\n\nJON LEHRER is the sixth University Carillonist of Michigan State University and the second University Carillonist of Grand Valley State University. A laureate of five international competitions for carillon (including the Queen Fabiola\, the Nederlandse Klokkenspel Vereniging\, and the Alexius Julien Baroque competitions)\, he is now a prolific soloist on the global stage\, with a CV that includes touring overseas on behalf of the Canada Council for the Arts\, teaching masterclasses at Universities across the nation\, and performing hundreds of shows on the North American renaissance festival circuit. Jon studied carillon with Geert D’Hollander\, Eddy Marien\, Koen Cosaert\, and Ellen Dickenson and holds degrees from Yale University and the Royal Carillon School of Belgium. Having recently retired from data science and cancer research\, he is focused on creating moments of beauty for busy university communities\, growing the carillon art\, and helping to train the next generation of expressive carillon virtuosi. Jon lives in Michigan with his partner Christy and their two cat-café adoptees\, Henry and Juliet.

The ensemble has collaborated with composers such as Michael Gordon\, John Luther Adams\, Emma O'Halloran\, Tristan Perich\, Susanna Hancock\, Finola Merivale\, Robert Maggio\, Ted Babcock\, Lesley Flanigan\, Shruthi Rajeskhar\, Jason Treuting\, and Ivan Trevino.\n\nRecent recordings with Cantaloupe Records include the Grammy nominated *Sila: The Breath of the World* and *An Atlas of Deep Time* by John Luther Adams\, as well as *Field of Vision* by Michael Gordon. DESCRIPTION:“Guided by life experiences\, Lindsay Lou's sound and songwriting continues to evolve and intertwine her sturdy Bluegrass roots with progressive Americana and Folk.” –PBS\n\nLindsay Lou is commonly dubbed the Queen of festivals she plays as someone you’re highly likely to see sitting in with other bands and curating All Stars sets in addition to playing her own music. Her roots are in Michigan\, where she started making records\, including the artist defining Ionia\, and touring worldwide with The Flatbellys and The Sweet Water Warblers. Since making Nashville her home\, she’s toured with her folk/rock Queen of Time Band and acoustic/harmony driven Honey Moon Trio and has celebrated records like Southland and Queen of Time. She’s a bringer together of people and a purveyor of buttery\, sweet\, meaningful experience.  In whatever ensemble she chooses to deliver her sound\, you hear the common thread of her love for traditional music and authentic new songs inspired by it.\n\nCo-produced by Lindsay Lou and Shani Ghandi\, Bluegrass Women is a ten song album of Bluegrass classics that were penned by women over the course of the genre’s history. The project honors women in a predominantly male fronted genre while featuring bands made up entirely of some of the best women and pickers in the scene today. Led by Lou\, the album features the likes of Molly Tuttle\, Sierra Hull\, Aoife O’Donovan and Sarah Jarosz (of I’m With Her)\, Laurie Lewis\, and many more.\n\n“Some of these songs I sang for many years before realizing they were penned by a wife/mother/female artist\,” says Lou. “As a woman\, it’s easy to feel like an outsider\, or like you don’t belong\, in a genre where there is a noticeable lack of representation of women among the forebears. To know that women’s voices made it into the traditional songs feels like a quiet win\, and I want to draw more attention to it.”
