        "description":"\n\nAugust 24 - October 18, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It\u2019s a course where, per the syllabus, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying, exploring, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" Each student takes their own path, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end of the semester, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \n\nThe works in this year\u2019s exhibition engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory, identity, materiality, ecology, technology, labor, social relationships, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches.         "description":"This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing, haptics, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!), and prior to that, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU), the lead creative organizer of the exhibit, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday, October 2nd, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.",

Documenting the May 18\u201327, 1980 democratization uprising in Gwangju, South Korea, the collection captures the shift from peaceful student protests to military violence and unified citizen resistance, carried out under a complete blackout as civilians and photojournalists risked their lives to photograph atrocities and smuggle film past cordons. Beyond serving as historical artifacts, these preserved visual truths offer a living blueprint for popular resilience against authoritarianism, transforming local trauma into a universal defense of human rights. Displaying these records at Michigan bridges 1980 Gwangju with our present moment, inviting viewers to engage past resistance in the ongoing effort to defend democracy today.\n\n*Exhibition Composition*\nThe exhibit will be composed of a visual narrative comprised of six chronological sections and two additional special sections:\n\n1. Protest (May 5\u201316, 1980): \nFollowing the collapse of Park Chung-hee\u2019s military dictatorship in October, 1979, Gwangju students and citizens held peaceful rallies for campus autonomy and the end of martial law. Photos from this era show orderly marches and hopeful faces, capturing a society on the brink of change before the structural contradictions shifted toward state-led violence. \n\n2. Suppression (May 18\u201319, 1980): \nA new junta government led by Chun Doo-hwan extended martial law to the entire country on May 17. Students at Chonnam National University protested against the new junta government\u2019s decision. State violence escalated as paratroopers, who were deployed to Gwangju, engaged student protesters. Streets became scenes of brutal beatings and kidnappings. Beyond documenting victims, the images on display in this section serve as primary historical evidence and legal proof of the military's methods and the sudden transformation of citizens into targets of control. \n\n3. Uprising (May 20\u201321, 1980): \nThe movement shifted into a popular struggle. Vehicles lined up in Gwangju\u2019s main thoroughfare, Geumnam-ro. This massive vehicle parade symbolized the people becoming active subjects of resistance. The military was given the order to use live ammunition against civilians. In reaction, the city became a space of voluntary mobilization and citizens emerged as historical political actors. \n\n4. Resistance (May 22\u201326, 1980): \nWhile isolated and cut off from communications, Gwangju established an autonomous system of self-governance. Photos in this section testify to the efforts made to establish a sense of order based on solidarity\u2014sharing food and donating blood\u2014rather than chaos. The formation of this \"Daedong (Great Unity) Community\" and the visual documentation thereof serve as foundations of democracy in South Korea. \n\n5. Massacre (May 27, 1980): \nThe uprising was crushed by a dawn military operation. While the armed resistance ended, the resulting photographs of the aftermath reveal the stark reality of the massacre. These images became the catalyst for future truth-seeking movements and the pursuit of historical justice in South Korea. \n\n6. Mourning: \nScenes of coffins, portraits, and silent vigils represent a collective ethical gaze. During this period, mourning was more than a display of grief; it was a communal act used to redefine the city\u2019s identity and establish new moral standards for justice.\n\n7. Special Section A: The Photographers\nThis special section highlights the domestic and international photographers who documented the uprising. This includes Korean journalists alongside US journalists Robin Moyer and Norman Thorpe, French correspondents Patrick Chauvel and Fran\u00e7ois Lochon, and German cinematographer J\u00fcrgen Hinzpeter. Their images transcend simple reporting, reflecting a moral commitment to record and a historical duty to ensure remembrance. Rather than viewing these photos solely as evidence, the exhibition reinterprets them through a lens of photographic history\u2014examining their context, distribution, and how they transformed raw records into social truth and collective memory.\n\n8. Special Section B: The Peace Corps: Americans Who Helped Gwangju\nWhen Gwangju was isolated under martial law in May 1980, four American Peace Corps volunteers\u2014Tim Warnberg, David Lee Dolinger, Judi Chamberlin, and Paul Courtright\u2014refused to leave, choosing instead to assist the wounded, aid foreign journalists, and ultimately expose the truth to the world. Those pivotal ten days reshaped their lives into lifelong commitments to human rights, inspiring decades of memoirs, academic writings, and testimonies. Through photographs, video footage, and personal records, this section traces their journey from eyewitnesses to active defenders of human dignity, inviting us to reflect on what it truly means to take a stand in the face of another\u2019s suffering. \n\nTwo additional events programmed in conjunction with this photo exhibition\n1. If still having issues, click this link.\u00a0\nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required, in-person, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!!\u00a0First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n\u201cHow many workshops do I have to sign up for?\u201d\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training.\u00a0\n\u201cI see that there is more than one session, does it matter which one I sign up for?\u201d\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops.\u00a0\n\u201cIs this workshop required?\u201d\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n\u201cI\u2019ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.\u201d\u00a0\nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment, communication, and boundary setting. However, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n\u201cWhat if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I\u2019m an active learner.\u201d\nOur workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles, including time for self-reflection, small group sharing, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! If still having issues, click this link.\u00a0\nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required, in-person, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!!\u00a0First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n\u201cHow many workshops do I have to sign up for?\u201d\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training.\u00a0\n\u201cI see that there is more than one session, does it matter which one I sign up for?\u201d\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops.\u00a0\n\u201cIs this workshop required?\u201d\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n\u201cI\u2019ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.\u201d\u00a0\nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment, communication, and boundary setting. However, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n\u201cWhat if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? We apologize for any inconvenience.*\n\nJonathan Lehrer performs on the Charles Baird Carillon, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower, for a rededication recital in celebration of renovations over the summer.\n\nThe largest bell, which strikes the hour, weighs 12 tons, while the smallest bell, 4\u00bd octaves above, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nhttps:\/\/record.umich.edu\/articles\/charles-baird-carillon-gets-its-voice-back\/\n\nGUEST ARTIST BIO\n\nJON LEHRER is the sixth University Carillonist of Michigan State University and the second University Carillonist of Grand Valley State University. A laureate of five international competitions for carillon (including the Queen Fabiola, the Nederlandse Klokkenspel Vereniging, and the Alexius Julien Baroque competitions), he is now a prolific soloist on the global stage, with a CV that includes touring overseas on behalf of the Canada Council for the Arts, teaching masterclasses at Universities across the nation, and performing hundreds of shows on the North American renaissance festival circuit. Jon studied carillon with Geert D\u2019Hollander, Eddy Marien, Koen Cosaert, and Ellen Dickenson and holds degrees from Yale University and the Royal Carillon School of Belgium. Having recently retired from data science and cancer research, he is focused on creating moments of beauty for busy university communities, growing the carillon art, and helping to train the next generation of expressive carillon virtuosi. If still having issues, click this link.\u00a0\nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required, in-person, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!!\u00a0First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n\u201cHow many workshops do I have to sign up for?\u201d\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training.\u00a0\n\u201cI see that there is more than one session, does it matter which one I sign up for?\u201d\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops.\u00a0\n\u201cIs this workshop required?\u201d\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n\u201cI\u2019ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.\u201d\u00a0\nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment, communication, and boundary setting.         "description":"\u201cGuided by life experiences, Lindsay Lou's sound and songwriting continues to evolve and intertwine her sturdy Bluegrass roots with progressive Americana and Folk.\u201d \u2013PBS\n\nLindsay Lou is commonly dubbed the Queen of festivals she plays as someone you\u2019re highly likely to see sitting in with other bands and curating All Stars sets in addition to playing her own music. Her roots are in Michigan, where she started making records, including the artist defining Ionia, and touring worldwide with The Flatbellys and The Sweet Water Warblers. Since making Nashville her home, she\u2019s toured with her folk\/rock Queen of Time Band and acoustic\/harmony driven Honey Moon Trio and has celebrated records like Southland and Queen of Time. She\u2019s a bringer together of people and a purveyor of buttery, sweet, meaningful experience.  In whatever ensemble she chooses to deliver her sound, you hear the common thread of her love for traditional music and authentic new songs inspired by it.\n\nCo-produced by Lindsay Lou and Shani Ghandi, Bluegrass Women is a ten song album of Bluegrass classics that were penned by women over the course of the genre\u2019s history. The project honors women in a predominantly male fronted genre while featuring bands made up entirely of some of the best women and pickers in the scene today. Led by Lou, the album features the likes of Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull, Aoife O\u2019Donovan and Sarah Jarosz (of I\u2019m With Her), Laurie Lewis, and many more.\n\n\u201cSome of these songs I sang for many years before realizing they were penned by a wife\/mother\/female artist,\u201d says Lou. \u201cAs a woman, it\u2019s easy to feel like an outsider, or like you don\u2019t belong, in a genre where there is a noticeable lack of representation of women among the forebears. To know that women\u2019s voices made it into the traditional songs feels like a quiet win, and I want to draw more attention to it.\u201d",
