August 24 - October 18, 2026
Exhibition Reception: October 1, 1-2:30 p.m.

In their second year, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where, per the syllabus, students "develop the capacity to work independently by identifying, exploring, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations." Each student takes their own path, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end of the semester, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members.

Installed throughout the Art & Architecture Building, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone.

The works in this year’s exhibition engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory, identity, materiality, ecology, technology, labor, social relationships, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches. While these subjects recur across the exhibition, what stands out most is not a dominant thematic direction, but a shared commitment to sustained inquiry.

–Sally Clegg, Lecturer & Student Exhibitions Coordinator & Pedram Baldari, Assistant Professor

Exhibiting Artists and Designers

Nailah Aguilar

Akylah Archer

Zachary Berenbaum

Samantha Blaine

Lauren Boyce

Kas Brajkovic

Anna Browne

Lilah Chow

Isabella Cortes

Magdalena Dimovski

Leah Elliott

Aya Fadlelzebair

M.
There are nearly one million refugees currently living in Poland. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.
In *This Is The Place*, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what, in Poland, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.
Anna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*, *The Guardian*, *The Wall Street Journal*, *The Washington Post*, *El Pais*, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR, Liminowicz divides her time between assignments and long-term personal projects, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project “Too Precious to Leave Behind”.

If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
October 8-9, 2026 | Institute for Social Research
Register to attend at https://myumi.ch/X8V6A

The challenge: New data and approaches to study complexity in the social world has often been without a concurrent focus on the foundations of scientific inquiry, including complex thinking, broad causal thinking, attention to epistemic lens, and integrating multiple disciplinary approaches. Further, the academic research model, with its resource-segregated networks, discipline-specific training, and short-term productivity metrics, contributes to a fragmented and potentially misleading understanding of the social world. In the second annual ISR Symposium on Complexity in the Social World, we will use ‘place’ as the case study to facilitate discussions on rigorous social science in the public interest.

Using research on place as the case study, discussion topics will include:
- Complex thinking about the social world
- The contribution of the humanities the study of the social world
- Epistemic lens and research transparency
- Theories, frameworks, and the limits of traditional causal inference
- The draw and danger of cool new data
- Addressing the challenges of the academic model of science

Presentations on the science of place will include:
- The relational nature of place in population social inequalities
- The role of history in shaping place
- The racialization of place; the spatialization of race
- Place as a neutral and rational driver of social inequalities
- Approaches to testing (causal) ideas around place

The Institute for Social Research will provide 35 travel awards for early career scholars who are building a career around the interdisciplinary science of place. These awards are intended to reduce financial barriers for those who are not currently affiliated with the University of Michigan. The awards are designed to broaden participation, support scholarly development, and expand the network of scholars engaged with the symposium themes. Travel awards will cover coach class airfare, symposium hotel, and ground airport transportation. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, from July 1, 2026 until September 4, 2026.
Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter, theater stage designer, teacher, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons, these paintings, along with his later nonconformist work, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.

Having witnessed two world wars, the 1917 revolution, and political terror, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable, neglected, and marginalized people: children, the elderly, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy, dignity, and admiration.

“For my father, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. Art was an expression of freedom, individuality, and personalized creativity, without which it ceased to be art.”
— Galina Lembersky, daughter

Exhibit curated by Yelena Lembersky, granddaughter of Felix Lembersky, and Geneviève Zubrzycki, WCEE Director.

Works on loan from the private collection of Yelena Lembersky.

Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.

If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
Visiting artist Olayami Dabls is a storyteller, curator, educator, and mentor. He is the founder of the MBAD African Bead Museum in Detroit. Through material culture, Dabls presents commentary on the past, present, and future from African and African-American perspectives, with the understanding that generations of African ancestors used visual materials to convey information about their identity as well as send messages for healing and protection. Dabls is a luminary; for decades he has re-imagined what a museum space can be, accessible to everyone, free from the underpinnings of colonialism and the Western, often white, frame. *Grand Vision* includes a conceptual installation in the Gallery, presenting Dabls’s own work in visual conversation with African beads and artifacts from Dabls’s Bead Museum collections.

Additionally, Dabls’s iconic outdoor sculpture *Iron Teaching Rocks Table Manners* will be installed on the U-M campus grounds near UMMA, at the intersection of State Street and South University from September 17- October 11, 2026. The project’s range intends to more fully articulate the many facets of Dabls’ creative practice, and the overlay of art, history, identity, community, and healing.

Curated by Srimoyee Mitra

Stamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture, UCLA.

This exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive, both personal and public, as a site of disturbance; and migration as a lived experience of refuge, refusal, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory, inheritance, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory, movement, and belonging.
",

Register for the Zoom webinar at: http://myumi.ch/PbkD4

There is little that connects the Chinese Communist Party, British Conservative Party, Kenyan leadership, Silicon Valley right-wing, and elites in post-Soviet states. But they all exhibit an acute fascination with founding Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, invoking select strands of his political thought and practice to legitimate their own political projects or imaginaries. Yet, while interest in Lee outside of Singapore is consistently growing, within Singaporean society there is a growing sense of exhaustion and indifference in appealing to his figure – especially when it is perceived as a cynical means to derive political profit for his long-ruling People’s Action Party (PAP). Using this observation as a launching pad, this lecture explores the contradictions of Lee’s legacy and develops rudiments to pursue a global history of Lee Kuan Yew, bringing his international reception and footprints within a single frame. This entails treating Lee as a global figure of world-historical importance, situating his political thought, movements, and interventions within global trends and networks. While this global approach magnifies Lee’s stature, it also amplifies the less comfortable aspects of his legacy: his “original sin” is no longer the detention without trial, but his role in legitimizing the bloody Vietnam War. A global history of Lee thereby presents intensified contradictions to grapple with.

Quah Say Jye is a Klarman Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell University.
If you are only seeing one workshop, please SIGN-IN and refresh the Sessions page! If still having issues, click this link.
First-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required, in-person, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:
“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”
You only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training.
“I see that there is more than one session, does it matter which one I sign up for?”
It generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops.
“Is this workshop required?”
This workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.
“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.”
Our team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment, communication, and boundary setting. However, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.
“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”
Our workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles, including time for self-reflection, small group sharing, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive.
“Can I request accommodations?”
We considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. These workshops also will have a presentation (other workshops we do not) and are a good fit for those who might need a large font. Please sign up for those if you feel that accommodations would assist you and reach out to SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu if you are concerned or have questions.
“I missed my workshop, what should I do ?”
Our team tracks attendance at each workshop by having participants swipe in with their MCard. If you are not able to attend the workshop you signed up for, our team will continue to send reminder emails until you have completed a workshop. In this case, please sign up for another workshop as soon as you can as the workshop is required and may fill up especially near the end of the semester. No need to contact SAPAC unless you are not able to reschedule.
“I have had gender-based violence training before, can I get this requirement waived?”
As this workshop was designed with University of Michigan student feedback in mind, our workshop is unique to the UM community. Our curriculum focuses on individualized reflection and because of its interactive nature, each workshop will be unique to the people attending. Although we are excited you already have familiarity with the subject, this workshop is required for every first year and transfer student.
“I’m a commuter/non-traditional student, do I still have to attend?"
Yes, this workshop is required for every first-year and transfer student - not only do we want every student to benefit from having this time to connect with peers, but we also want to make sure your peers benefit from what you bring to our community. If you have any concerns or questions about being able to participate, please contact SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.
“I still have questions! Who should I contact?"
Please contact us at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.
A.I. is inevitable-- at least that is what we would be led to believe from the nonstop media coverage, podcast interviews with tech billionaires, and the advertisements interspersed in our TikTok and Reels doomscrolling sessions. But what does it mean to bring a critical eye to Generative A.I.? Why should the average person care about how their data is used to fuel these systems? Who does the labor that makes them work? And what impact will this push to incorporate A.I. in the classroom, healthcare, politics, and pop culture have on us as a society and on our environment? This panel considers three possibilities: refusal, resistance, and repair as responses to A.I.'s creep into our daily lives.

This event is open to the public, and we encourage all interested faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students to attend.

Advance registration is recommended.

Register to attend on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_LrO1U6J_SrG1h5lh_l0Nxw

Meet the Panelists:

Jenny L. Davis is the Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Chair and Professor of Sociology at Vanderbilt University with a secondary appointment in Vanderbilt's College of Connected Computing (CCC). She is an Honorary Professor of Sociology at The Australian National University, an alumni affiliate at the Center for Democracy and Technology, and Co-Director of Vanderbilt's Computing + Society program. She works at the intersection of social psychology and technology studies, focusing on the ways social forces embed within and are affected by, technological systems. Her first book, How Artifacts Afford: The Power and Politics of Everyday Things (MIT Press 2020) presents an operational framework for the analysis and design of technologies in society. Her second book, The Injustice of Fairness: Algorithmic Reparation and the Case for Redress shifts the foundation of algorithmic ethics, challenging 'fairness' as the default value-standard (co-authored with Apryl Williams) (UC Press, 2026).

Julián Posada is an Assistant Professor of American Studies and co-director of the certificate in Computing, Culture, and Society at Yale University. His research examines the social and cultural dimensions of information, especially the role of labor and infrastructure in the development of artificial intelligence. He is the author of Platform Extractivism: Data Work and The People Powering Artificial Intelligence (University of California Press, 2026). This book argues that the development of datasets for artificial intelligence depends on labor organized through “platform extractivism,” a system that exploits economic instability to capture value from precaritized workers. By reframing AI data work as a continuation of historical extractive relations, the monograph intervenes in debates on the future of work and the hidden costs of AI and digital platforms. Posada’s interests include platform studies, labor studies, digital ethics and policy, social computing, and science and technology studies.

Apryl Williams is a jointly appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication & Media and the Digital Studies Institute at the University of Michigan. She is also a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, a former Senior Fellow in Trustworthy AI at Mozilla, as well as an affiliated researcher at NYU's Center for Critical Race & Digital Studies. She is the author of Not My Type: Automating Sexual Racism in Online Dating, published with Stanford University Press. As a multidisciplinary scholar, Williams studies experiences of gender and race at the intersection of digital spaces and algorithmic technocultures.

Rua M. Williams is an Assistant Professor in the School of Applied and Creative Computing at Purdue University and a former Just Tech Fellow with the Social Science Research Council. As Principal Investigator of the CoLiberation Lab, Dr. Williams’s work explores how disabled people imagine and build their own sociotechnical worlds. Projects in the CoLiberation Lab investigate how technology policy and research practice interact to disrupt disabled people’s bodily autonomy and access to meaningful public life. Dr. Williams's book, Disabling Intelligences: Legacies of Eugenics and How We Are Wrong about AI is forthcoming from Palgrave MacMillan.

Meet the Moderator:

Catherine Knight Steele is an Associate Professor of Communication at the University of Maryland - College Park where she directs the Black Communication and Technology lab (BCaT) as a part of the Digital Inquiry, Speculation, Collaboration, & Optimism (DISCO) Network funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. She is a 2024-26 Just Tech Fellow. Her research focuses on race, gender, and media, with a specific emphasis on Black culture and discourse and digital communication. She examines representations of marginalized communities in the media and how groups resist oppression and practice joy using online technology to create spaces of community.

We want to make our events accessible to all participants. Further, the academic research model, with its resource-segregated networks, discipline-specific training, and short-term productivity metrics, contributes to a fragmented and potentially misleading understanding of the social world. In the second annual ISR Symposium on Complexity in the Social World, we will use ‘place’ as the case study to facilitate discussions on rigorous social science in the public interest.Using research on place as the case study, discussion topics will include:Complex thinking about the social worldThe contribution of the humanities the study of the social worldEpistemic lens and research transparencyTheories, frameworks, and the limits of traditional causal inferenceThe draw and danger of cool new dataAddressing the challenges of the academic model of sciencePresentations on the science of place will include:The relational nature of place in population social inequalitiesThe role of history in shaping placeThe racialization of place; the spatialization of racePlace as a neutral and rational driver of social inequalitiesApproaches to testing (causal) ideas around place
As the country heads into the 2026 midterm elections, the University of Michigan welcomes journalist Osita Nwanevu, contributing editor at The New Republic and columnist at The Guardian, for a public conversation with Elizabeth Anderson, the John Dewey Distinguished University Professor of Philosophy.

The evening centers on Nwanevu's new book, The Right of the People: Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding, which argues that America's democratic troubles run deeper than any single election. The real problem, Nwanevu contends, lies in institutions that were never designed to let majorities govern, and in an economy that keeps power far from ordinary people.

Anderson, one of the country's most influential political philosophers, brings her own work on democracy, equality, and the workplace to the exchange. Together they take up the questions this election season keeps surfacing. Who really holds power in America? Why do so many people feel unheard, and what would it take to build a democracy worthy of the name?

The conversation is free and open to students, faculty, and the broader Ann Arbor community, with time for audience questions.

Schedule

Friday, October 9, 2026 at Ross School of Business, Room TBD

5:30 pm Doors open, light refreshments and Literati book sales in the lobby.
6:00 pm The program begins, including questions and answers at the end.
7:30 pm Refreshments and book signing / sales in the lobby until 8:00 pm.

Sponsors and Partners

U-M Department of Philosophy; Energy Club at Ross; Rackham Graduate School; Poverty Solutions; Business+Impact at Ross; Wallace House; Institute for the Humanities; U-M Department of History; U-M Department of English Language & Literature; Ford School of Public Policy; Center for Positive Organizations; Center for Political Studies; U-M Department of Political Science; Michigan Law; the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Program; Science, Technology & Society; Science, Technology & Public Policy at the Ford School; the Erb Institute; Net Impact; and U-M Department of Sociology.
*Come from Away* is based on the true story of the time when the isolated community of Gander, Newfoundland, played host to the world. What started as an average day in a small town turned into an international sleepover, when 38 planes, carrying thousands of people from around the globe, were diverted to Gander’s airstrip on September 11, 2001. Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers, the people of Gander cheered the stranded travelers with music, an open bar, and the recognition that we’re all part of a global family.

*Come from Away* has earned global success with 37 award nominations and 13 wins, most notably Best New Musical at the 2019 Olivier Awards and Outstanding Musical at the 2017 Drama Desk Awards. The show’s global presence resonates with audiences as an uplifting reminder of humanity’s ability to come together.

Book, Music, and Lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein
Directed by Vincent J.
“When Rock Star Charisma Meets Celtic Dervish Fiddling” –Nashville's Music City Roots

Named after Ukrainian nomads, Scythian (sith-ee-yin) plays roots music from Celtic, Eastern European and Appalachian traditions with thunderous energy, technical prowess, and storytelling songwriting, beckoning crowds into a barn-dance, rock concert experience. The foursome made up of Alexander Fedoryka (Vocals, Fiddle, Mandolin, Harmonica), Danylo Fedoryka (Vocals, Guitar, Accordion), Ethan Dean (Vocals, Upright and Electric Bass, Percussion, Guitar) and Alex Kuldell (Vocals, Drums, Percussion) brings various influences together to create a conglomerate which is technically precise and steeped in various folk traditions. The classically trained Fedoryka brothers grew up on Ukrainian folk music and bluegrass, while Ethan Dean was raised on the greats of 60’s & 70’s folk-rock. World Champion Scottish Drummer, Alex Kuldell, spent 20 years in the US Army Fife and Drum Corps and brings a precision and taste which can only be honed in the highest levels of competition and performance. You have to catch the live show to understand why The Camel City Dispatch said of a MerleFest performance: “[Scythian gives] no quarter in their quest to entertain and bring a joy to their music that gives it an irony-free, wide open feel of manic possibility. The playing is technically brilliant, but it is the energy that carries the day."
Born in colonized Ireland just after the turn of the twentieth century, Samuel Beckett wrote about how power works, and how it works on people -- especially the dispossessed and the destitute. His own experience hiding from the Gestapo in the French countryside surfaces in most famous play, *Waiting for Godot* (1953).

*Time Passes* presents eight short plays written after *Godot*, from the late 1950s to the early 1980s. Showcasing Beckett's verbal play and visual precision, as well as his political imagination, they meet our own moment -- fierce, funny, uncompromising, and compassionate as ever.

Featured plays:
*Act Without Words II*
*Play*
*Come and Go*
*Footfalls*
*Rockaby*
*Catastrophe*
*What Where*
*Quad*

Written by Samuel Beckett

Directed by Malcolm Tulip",
