DESCRIPTION:\n\nAugust 24 - October 18\, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1\, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \n\nThe works in this year’s exhibition engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory\, identity\, materiality\, ecology\, technology\, labor\, social relationships\, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches. DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan.  Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.  \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space.  In patterns that support the artwork’s theme\, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.

DESCRIPTION:There are nearly one million refugees currently living in Poland. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine\, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia\, Latin America\, Africa\, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different\, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*\, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)\, Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what\, in Poland\, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw\, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*\, *The Guardian*\, *The Wall Street Journal*\, *The Washington Post*\, *El Pais*\, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR\, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-term personal projects\, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss\, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion\, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project “Too Precious to Leave Behind”.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women\, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. Through three distinct exhibit sections\, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.\n\nWhile enjoying the exhibit\, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. DESCRIPTION:Lila Kadaj received her MFA from Wayne State University. Her work has been shown at numerous institutions\, including the Detroit Institute of Arts\, the Cranbrook Art Museum\, and the Arab American National Museum.  She spent nearly 27 years teaching art at Detroit Public schools.\n\nArtist statement: “When looking at a beautiful flower.  It’s just itself.  Just there......no .....it does not proclaim its purpose for blooming is to make people happy. It just is. Like standing in front of an easel and painting........just is.......no matter......what proclamations may be concluded to sway the viewer. Same thing goes for fine art.  It’s not about I am a woman....it’s not about I am a first generation Arab American.....it’s not about being a child of trauma....it’s not about a member of my family being gunned down on the street....it’s about being born a painter.....standing in front of my easel and working to create a \"Piece of Fine Art\". Not standing on some soap box and expecting my words to somehow qualify my painting. It’s the painting\, drawing or sculpture that must speak on its own.......on how the artist......via the intellect and muse uses the elements to create something distinct and first rate.   It can be quiet or loud. I see so much very weak work uplifted not for its quality but because it’s in fashion.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:Visit the Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room to see historical materials that illustrate women’s changing relationship with food\, cooking\, and technology during the heady decade of the 1920s\, sandwiched between WWI and the Great Depression. This exhibit features materials from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive\, as well as select items from the Art\, Architecture\, and Engineering Special Collections and the Transportation History Collection.\n\nAs America rang in a new decade in the 1920s\, cookbook authors and appliance manufacturers stood ready to offer the newly emancipated and forward-thinking American woman a vision for her future\, a vision that would be scientifically  grounded\, speedy enough to make time for leisure as well as housework\, and guaranteed to bring fun to that most humdrum of chores: planning and preparing meals for a family three times a day\, 365 days a year.

DESCRIPTION:Visiting artist Olayami Dabls is a storyteller\, curator\, educator\, and mentor. He is the founder of the MBAD African Bead Museum in Detroit. Through material culture\, Dabls presents commentary on the past\, present\, and future from African and African-American perspectives\, with the understanding that generations of African ancestors used visual materials to convey information about their identity as well as send messages for healing and protection. Dabls is a luminary\; for decades he has re-imagined what a museum space can be\, accessible to everyone\, free from the underpinnings of colonialism and the Western\, often white\, frame. *Grand Vision* includes a conceptual installation in the Gallery\, presenting Dabls’s own work in visual conversation with African beads and artifacts from Dabls’s Bead Museum collections. \n\nAdditionally\, Dabls’s iconic outdoor sculpture *Iron Teaching Rocks Table Manners* will be installed on the U-M campus grounds near UMMA\, at the intersection of State Street and South University from September 17- October 11\, 2026. The project’s range intends to more fully articulate the many facets of Dabls’ creative practice\, and the overlay of art\, history\, identity\, community\, and healing.

Uhlmann\, Department of Human Genetics\n___\nStephanie Malia Fullerton\, DPhil\, is Professor of Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She is also Adjunct Professor in the UW Departments of Epidemiology\, Genome Sciences\, and Medicine (Medical Genetics)\, as well as an affiliate investigator with the Public Health Sciences division of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. She received a PhD in Human Population Genetics from the University of Oxford and later re-trained in Ethical\, Legal\, and Social Implications (ELSI) research with a fellowship from the NIH National Human Genome Research Institute.\n\nDr. Fullerton’s work focuses on the ethical and social implications of genomic research and its equitable and safe translation for clinical and public health benefit. She serves as the ELSI lead for the Clinical Sequencing Evidence-Generating Research (CSER2) Consortium coordinating center\, co-chairs the TOPMed Consortium ELSI Committee\, and chairs the Bioethics Advisory Board of the Kaiser Permanente national Research Bank. She contributes to a range of empirical projects focused on clinical genomics translation and precision medicine approaches to the treatment and prevention of cancer and kidney disease in diverse patient populations.

DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.

DESCRIPTION:RCGD Fall 2026 Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture & Health\, meets Mondays 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 6050.\n\nGlobal Perspectives on Culture and Health explores fundamental aspects of human life. Culture facilitates human interaction by providing meaning to lived experience. Accounting for culture in both theories and methods potentially advances the study of health by connecting the macro and micro levels of human experience. Yet\, culture should be understood as dynamic and complex. It fundamentally shapes individuals and simultaneously is shaped by individuals. The importance of systematically attending to culture includes topics of values\, language\, immigration\, and society.\n\nTheories and methods that incorporate culture hold great potential for advancing the understanding of health outcomes and health trajectories in various global contexts.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on various aspects of culture and diverse groups living in the U.S. and across the globe to address the ways in which attending to culture helps clarify and overcome challenges to good health.\n\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Τhe Greek Poet of the 21st Century between Melancholic Rupture and Insurgent Utopia
DESCRIPTION:3rd Vakalo Family Visiting Artist/Scholar Lecture\n\nThis lecture examines the poet of the twenty-first century as a social and political subject\, focusing on contemporary Greek poetry as it emerges through the interviews included in the online ten-year project Reading Greece implemented by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Drawing on poets’ own reflections\, it explores how today’s poets position themselves not as a detached aesthetic figure\, but as an engaged agent\, deeply implicated in the historical\, political\, and affective landscapes of their time. Contemporary Greek poets articulate a dynamic dialogue with the past\, engaging with personal and collective histories\, past traumas\, and the longue durée of Greek cultural memory. In their work\, poetry becomes a site where language registers the immediate pressures of socio-political reality: austerity\, precarity\, migration\, gendered and racialized violence\, and the restructuring of public space. The poet of the twenty-first century emerges as a figure who inhabits contradiction\, between private vulnerability and public intervention\, historical burden and utopian projection. This lecture argues that contemporary Greek poetry offers not only aesthetic innovation but also a form of political thinking: a practice that interrogates reality\, reclaims history\, and reimagines the collective horizon.\n\nAthina Rossoglou is a graduate of the Department of Foreign Languages\, Translation and Interpreting at the Ionian University. She has pursued studies in European Civilization and holds a postgraduate degree in Public History. She is currently a doctoral candidate at the Ionian University. Her research examines Greek poetry of the 21st century\, with particular emphasis on the ways in which it engages with the concepts of history\, nationhood\, public space\, and identity formation. She serves as a Press Attaché at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, where she was responsible for the “Reading Greece” project for a period of ten years\, an initiative aimed at the promotion and international dissemination of contemporary Greek literature.

DESCRIPTION:\n\nTrapped in museum archives\, Ancestors bend time and space to find their way home. History\, spirituality\, and the law collide as tribal repatriation specialists fight to return and rebury Indigenous human remains\, offering a revealing look at the still-pervasive worldviews that justified collecting them in the first place.\nThe film Aanikoobijigan [ancestor/great-grandparent/great-grandchild] documents the emotional and vital work of MACPRA (Michigan Anishinaabek Cultural Preservation and Repatriation Alliance). This alliance\, made up of repatriation specialists representing all Michigan tribes\, fights to bring their Ancestors and funerary objects home from settler colonial institutions like museums\, libraries\, and archives. Adam and Zack Khalil’s monumental and formally daring film follows the pressing struggle to rebury Indigenous human remains that have been held in sterile storage\, laying bare the history of Indigenous collections and the battle to recognize and enforce the laws intended to facilitate their repatriation to the communities they were originally stolen from. Using an essayistic approach alongside vérité portraits\, the film celebrates the courageous individuals who carry out this hard and emotionally draining labor of return. \n\n—Sundance Film Festival\n\nAanikoobijigan [ancestor/great-grandparent/great-grandchild] directors Adam and Zack Khalil are members of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. They are co-directors and co-editors of the feature documentary INAATE/SE/ [it shines a certain way. to a certain place./ it flies. falls./] (2016) which premiered as the closing night film of the Museum of Modern Art’s Doc Fortnight Film Festival\, and the experimental documentary short The Violence of a Civilization without Secrets (2017) which premiered at Sundance. The Khalils are core contributors to New Red Order\, a public-secret society which calls attraction toward indigeneity into question\, yet promotes this desire\, and enjoins potential non-Indigenous accomplices to participate in the co-examination and expansion of Indigenous agency. \n\nAdam Khalil is an artist whose practice attempts to subvert traditional forms of image-making through humor\, relation\, and transgression. A co-founder of COUSINS Collective\, Khalil’s work has been exhibited or screened at the Museum of Modern Art\, Sundance Film Festival\, New York Film Festival\, Tate Modern\, HKW\, Walker Arts Center\, Lincoln Center\, Palais de Tokyo\, Kunsthal Charlottenborg\, Creative Time\, Toronto Biennial 2019\, Whitney Biennial 2019\, Sharjah Biennial 15\, Counterpublic Triennial 2023\, among other institutions. Khalil is the recipient of various fellowships and grants\, including a 2021 Creative Capital Award\, a 2020 Herb Alpert Award\, a Jerome Artist Fellowship\, the Gates Millennium Scholarship\, and honors from Sundance Art of Nonfiction and Cinereach.\n\nZack Khalil is a filmmaker and artist whose work centers Indigenous narratives in the present—and looks towards the future—through the use of innovative nonfiction forms. Khalil also works professionally as a video editor\, most recently co-editing Alison O’Daniels feature film The Tuba Thieves (2023)\, which premiered at Sundance. Filmmakers and special guests will be in attendance. Light refreshments will be served.\n\nAbout the Film\nIn the sterile storage of museums and archives our ancestor’s remains struggle to find their way home. Aanikoobijigan follows eleven indigenous repatriation specialists that make up MACPRA (Michigan Anishinaabek Cultural Preservation & Repatriation Alliance) fighting to rebury and return ancestors from settler-colonial libraries\, archives\, and museums. Through an essayistic approach the film lays bare the history of indigenous collections\, the laws passed to ensure return of human remains and funerary objects\, and vérité portraits of the righteous and courageous individuals doing the hard and emotionally draining work of bringing our ancestors back home.\n\nPresented in partnership with the U-M Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Office\; U-M Museum of Anthropological Archeology\; U-M Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum\; U-M Department of Film\, Television\, and Media\; the U-M Department of American Culture\; the U-M Inclusive History Project\; the U-M Department of Anthropology\; U-M Museum Studies Program\; and the U-M Stamps Gallery.\n

DESCRIPTION:Alash are masters of traditional Tuvan instruments as well as the ancient art of throat singing\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. Believing that traditional music must constantly evolve\, the musicians subtly infuse their songs with western elements\, creating their own unique style that is fresh and new\, yet true to their Tuvan musical heritage.\n\nAlash first toured the U.S. under the sponsorship of the OpenWorld Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then they have returned many times\, to the delight of American audiences. The Washington Post described their music as “utterly stunning\,” quipping that after the performance“audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.”\n\nAlash enjoys collaborating with musicians of all stripes. Since their early partnership with the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra\, they have joined forces with musicians across the spectrum—from country to classical to jazz to beatboxing. Alash appeared as guest artists on Béla Fleck & the Flecktones’ Grammy-winning holiday CD Jingle All the Way (2008). They joined Chicago’s innovative Fifth House Ensemble in a groundbreaking concert series called Sonic Meditations\, and later were part of a “global jam band” which recorded the soundtrack for the video game The Pathless. Most recently\, Bady-Dorzhu Ondar teamed up with beatboxer Shodekeh in a live recording of original Tuvan songs filtered through the creative artistry of hip hop musicians.
