Our detailed blended learning training includes both testing of hands-on skills as well as comprehension on written tests. The certification\, which includes First Aid\, CPR and AED training\, is valid for two years upon completion and is accepted nationwide. DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan.  Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.  \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space.  In patterns that support the artwork’s theme\, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.

DESCRIPTION:There are nearly one million refugees currently living in Poland. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine\, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia\, Latin America\, Africa\, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different\, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*\, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)\, Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what\, in Poland\, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw\, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*\, *The Guardian*\, *The Wall Street Journal*\, *The Washington Post*\, *El Pais*\, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR\, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-term personal projects\, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss\, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion\, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project “Too Precious to Leave Behind”.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Comics Beyond Sight
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

DESCRIPTION:Lila Kadaj received her MFA from Wayne State University. Her work has been shown at numerous institutions\, including the Detroit Institute of Arts\, the Cranbrook Art Museum\, and the Arab American National Museum.  She spent nearly 27 years teaching art at Detroit Public schools.\n\nArtist statement: “When looking at a beautiful flower.  It’s just itself.  Just there......no .....it does not proclaim its purpose for blooming is to make people happy. It just is. Like standing in front of an easel and painting........just is.......no matter......what proclamations may be concluded to sway the viewer. Same thing goes for fine art.  It’s not about I am a woman....it’s not about I am a first generation Arab American.....it’s not about being a child of trauma....it’s not about a member of my family being gunned down on the street....it’s about being born a painter.....standing in front of my easel and working to create a \"Piece of Fine Art\". Not standing on some soap box and expecting my words to somehow qualify my painting. It’s the painting\, drawing or sculpture that must speak on its own.......on how the artist......via the intellect and muse uses the elements to create something distinct and first rate.   It can be quiet or loud. I see so much very weak work uplifted not for its quality but because it’s in fashion.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Black Birth Joy
DESCRIPTION:Black Birth Joy by Tiana Lashae documents birth as a deeply personal story of connection\, courage\, tenderness\, and joy. The photographs and stories in the exhibit challenge mainstream narratives that reduce Black birth to statistics and only amplify Black pregnant women's anxiety and hesitancy about navigating the maternal health care system. Instead\, the exhibit offers evidence of joy\, reminders of possibility\, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard\, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers\, babies\, partners\, families\, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care\, respectful treatment\, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity\, dignity\, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae\, a doula and birth/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine\, an international publication. DESCRIPTION:Visiting artist Olayami Dabls is a storyteller\, curator\, educator\, and mentor. He is the founder of the MBAD African Bead Museum in Detroit. Through material culture\, Dabls presents commentary on the past\, present\, and future from African and African-American perspectives\, with the understanding that generations of African ancestors used visual materials to convey information about their identity as well as send messages for healing and protection. Dabls is a luminary\; for decades he has re-imagined what a museum space can be\, accessible to everyone\, free from the underpinnings of colonialism and the Western\, often white\, frame. *Grand Vision* includes a conceptual installation in the Gallery\, presenting Dabls’s own work in visual conversation with African beads and artifacts from Dabls’s Bead Museum collections. \n\nAdditionally\, Dabls’s iconic outdoor sculpture *Iron Teaching Rocks Table Manners* will be installed on the U-M campus grounds near UMMA\, at the intersection of State Street and South University from September 17- October 11\, 2026. The project’s range intends to more fully articulate the many facets of Dabls’ creative practice\, and the overlay of art\, history\, identity\, community\, and healing.

DESCRIPTION:The Student Life Facilitation Committee and Student Life Professional Development are proud to announce that we are offering a staff-oriented facilitation training opportunity once again! A similar training has been offered to students and we have adapted the curriculum to provide staff with the skills and knowledge necessary to build confidence and ability in facilitation.The training will take place on Monday\, October 19 & Tuesday\, October 20\, 9:00am-4:30pm in the Connector Multipurpose Room. Attendance is required for the full training. A light breakfast & lunch will be provided.The training is comprised of a 16-hour training curriculum designed to: 1) prepare participants to facilitate dialogues\, meetings\, and workshops involving two or more individuals\; 2) be available to staff within Student Life\; 3) supplement unit-specific trainings\; 4) maximize divisional resources\; and 5) be module-based and repeatable.We encourage you to register\, participate\, and gain invaluable skills throughout the training. This training is free to Student Life staff and $100 for staff in other departments. We have a minimum cap of 10 and a maximum cap of 16 participants. If we do not meet the minimum we will need to cancel the training. DESCRIPTION:Pictured Rocks Fall Break is a five-day expedition from October 16–20\, 2026.  to one of Michigan's most breathtaking landscapes during the peak of fall color.\n\nThroughout the long weekend\, you'll hike through colorful autumn forests\, discover hidden coves\, and take in sweeping views from cliffs rising nearly 200 feet above the crystal-clear waters of Lake Superior. Register by October 6\, 2026 to secure your spot! Cost: $755\n\nThis expedition offers two ways to experience Pictured Rocks. Approximately 8–10 participants will backpack a section of the lakeshore trail\, carrying everything needed for several days in the backcountry while camping at remote sites. \n\nThe remaining participants will establish a comfortable tent basecamp\, explore the region through day hikes and scenic destinations\, and support the backpacking team with transportation and logistics. \n\nThe program takes place October 16–20\, 2026. Participants will spend four nights tent camping throughout Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore before returning to the Adventure Leadership Resource Center located on Central Campus during the evening on Tuesday\, October 20.\nThe program includes transportation\, meals during the expedition\, campsite reservations\, all group camping equipment\, and the opportunity to borrow personal camping gear — including a backpack\, sleeping bag\, sleeping pad\, and headlamp — at no additional cost. DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

As part of that work\, he hosts “Boundless Moments\,” a storytelling podcast in which sacred moments come to life through the voices of those who lived them. He also serves as the Acting Chief of Medicine at the Veterans Affairs Ann Arbor Healthcare System and the Director of the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Learning Program for the Internal Medicine Residency. \n\nDr. Houchens has a wealth of experience in facilitating communication skills training at the local\, regional and national levels. His research and interests revolve around interpersonal relationships\, connection and communication in healthcare settings. He emphasizes the role communication plays in patient and provider satisfaction\, education\, professionalism and humanism. He has found that sacred moments in healthcare tie many of these together. He has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications\, one book (\"Teaching Inpatient Medicine: Connecting\, Coaching\, and Communicating in the Hospital\, 2nd Edition\") and three book chapters.

DESCRIPTION:This project develops a novel dataset of federally-insured mortgages from 1935 to 1975 by digitizing local land records from county recorders of deeds across a geographically diverse set of U.S. counties. Despite the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) and Veterans Administration (VA) programs accounting for up to 50% of all mortgages for some years during this period\, systematic borrower-level data has been unavailable due to a lack of federal records and decentralized county recording systems. Using a new pipeline that deploys large language models to digitize scanned mortgages\, we identify and extract information from FHA-insured and VA-guaranteed mortgages\, geolocate properties\, and link borrowers to full-count Census data from 1940 and 1950. This produces the first comprehensive address- and borrower-level dataset beyond 1940. We investigate the share of Black borrowers among FHA and VA mortgage recipients\, characterize the spatial distribution of mortgages across neighborhoods that vary in racial composition and HOLC ratings\, and examine the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of borrowers. The analysis enhances our understanding of how federal housing policy shaped metropolitan development and racial inequality during the New Deal and Civil Rights eras.

And who benefits from the official and unofficial narratives constructed about the nation’s collective history? \n\nIn 2026\, as the country celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, the current presidential administration has taken concerted steps to shape and disseminate a very specific version of the nation’s history. Notably\, their efforts involve limiting the stories that are told about our past to conceal difficult truths\, ignoring real complexities from the historical record\, undermining the difficult work of historical research\, and seeking to avoid the processes of interpreting and discussing the meaning of our past. But we can also see the resistance to this rewriting and its erasures in the persistence of existing histories\, as well as the continued proliferation of alternate histories in a variety of spheres and locations that are not subject to governmental control.\n\nThis webinar accompanies the publication of Spark Magazine’s upcoming series\, “History in a Time of Forgetting\,” which grapples with what it means to engage in and uplift historical research amid the present national climate. The online webinar will feature series curators Jennifer Brady and Camron Michael Amin\, from the University of Michigan's Inclusive History Project\, in conversation with series contributors Elisa Alfonso\, David Porter\, S. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Mechanistic Insights into Metal-Protein Interactions: Implications for Neurodegenerative Disease Progression and Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Elevated levels of protein expression and aberrant metal exposure have been reported in many neurodegenerative diseases\, including Huntington’s Disease (HD). While there is currently no cure for HD\, metal chelation therapies have been shown to assuage disease symptoms including chorea. These observations underscore the critical need to understand how metal-protein interactions are involved in disease pathogenesis. Our objective in this work is to elucidate the role of copper (Cu) and other biorelevant metals in HD and\, more specifically\, their interactions with the huntingtin protein (htt). We aimed to characterize the Cu-htt interaction and speciation trends in our in vitro HD system\, as well as the influence of disease-relevant Cu concentrations on protein oligomerization/aggregation both in vitro and in vivo. We utilized multiple spectroscopic techniques (circular dichroism\, electron paramagnetic resonance\, UV-Vis absorption\, dynamic light scattering\, and mass spectrometry) that cover a broad range of energy scales\, allowing us to characterize protein structure at the molecular\, secondary structure\, and quaternary structure levels. Additionally\, site-directed mutagenesis of several putative metal binding residues was used to define the roles of specific amino acids in mediating oligomerization/aggregation\, metal binding\, and redox chemistry. Taken together\, our work has led to the first report of multiple copper binding sites in non-pathological htt and provides insight into one pathway for depletion of native htt pools that may contribute to HD.
