The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. The photographs and stories in the exhibit challenge mainstream narratives that reduce Black birth to statistics and only amplify Black pregnant women's anxiety and hesitancy about navigating the maternal health care system. Instead\, the exhibit offers evidence of joy\, reminders of possibility\, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard\, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers\, babies\, partners\, families\, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care\, respectful treatment\, and patient rights. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference\, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it\, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie\, typically used to hang and bind other material\, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation\, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility\, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell\, to slow down\, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist\, designer\, and educator who works across sculpture\, installation\, sound\, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions\, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry\, exploring themes of labor\, precarity\, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology\, Science Gallery Detroit\, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia\, New Media Caucus (NMC)\, WaveFarm\, The Boulder Public Library\, The Hyde Park Art Center\, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press\, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI)\, International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA)\, among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne\, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image / object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne\, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist’s interest in embodied experience of space\, archival and site responsiveness\, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty\, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist / educator / curator currently based in Detroit\, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects\, he reimagines\, and explores within frameworks such as language\, the passage of time\, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal\, transformative\, and emotive states through materiality\, process\, and placement\, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer’s encounters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from San Francisco State University. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. The DAAS Faculty Forum will be held monthly on Wednesdays at noon.\n\nOctober 21: Justine Davis\, Assistant Professor of Afroamerican and African Studies\; Assistant Professor of Political Science \nDual Citizenship & Dueling Loyalties: Perceptions of Politicians from the Diaspora\n\nAbstract:\n\nHow do citizens perceive and respond to dual citizenship and diaspora policies\, particularly pertaining to politicians who have ties to multiple countries? This project entails a multi-country survey and experimental design in Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia on public opinion about dual citizenship. Given the growing political and economic influence of the African diaspora\, the rights and roles of dual citizens have become increasingly contentious. Using a descriptive survey and a conjoint experiment\, we explore when and why citizens support dual citizenship\, how they respond to diaspora politicians\, and how they view the role dual citizens and the broader diaspora play in the economic and democratic development of their countries.\n\nBio:\n\n​I am an assistant professor jointly appointed in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS) and the Political Science Department at the University of Michigan. Prior to this position\, I was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan and a UC Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California\, San Diego. I received my Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California\, Berkeley. \n\nI study comparative politics and political behavior\, focusing on sub-Saharan Africa. In particular\, I am interested in the challenges of democratization efforts in post-conflict settings and weakly institutionalized democracies.\n\nMy book\, No Neutral Ground\, forthcoming with Cambridge University Press\, examines the role of non-governmental organizations in fostering democracy after civil war.\n\nMy research has been supported by the Carnegie Corporation\; the National Science Foundation\; the West Africa Research Association\; the Human Rights Center at UC Berkeley\; and the Center for African Studies\, the Peder Sather Center for Advanced Study\, and the Institute for International Studies at UC Berkeley. We study how relationship dissolution and property-division rules affect these businesses using Canadian administrative data linking couples\, firm ownership\, individual tax returns\, and corporate balance sheets. A matched event study of couples who jointly own a business shows that separation shifts ownership toward male partners and away from female partners. Firms experience large and persistent declines in assets\, employment\, profits\, and corporate tax liabilities. Male partners' personal income and tax liabilities rise\, while female partners' fall. Comparing jointly owned businesses with solely owned businesses across legal married and common-law couples\, we find larger contractions where partners have stronger claims on business wealth\, consistent with asset division contributing to firm contraction. We then exploit British Columbia's 2013 expansion of equal property-division rights to common-law partners. The reform produces a small but noisy decline in separation rates\, alongside increases in firm size and performance. Together\, our findings suggest that dividing business wealth upon separation can constrain production and shift income across corporate and personal tax bases. Family law therefore has effects that reach beyond the household as it changes not only the allocation of household wealth but also the scale and performance of private businesses. Generalizing this\, Bayer-Macrì-Toda proposed to use a conjectural ch_3 inequality for tilt stable objects to construct stability conditions on threefolds. This inequality found many applications ranging from counting invariants to linear series\, but people were only able to prove it in special cases.\n\nThe recent breakthrough of Chunyi Li provides a different route to construct stability conditions over any projective variety. In my talk\, I will recall this beautiful idea\, and explain that\, via an enhancement of Li’s construction together with some reverse-engineering\, we can produce a series of inequalities on any Chern characters for suitable objects on any variety\, with Bogomolov-Gieseker and Bayer-Macrì-Toda as the first two instances. This is based on joint work in progress with Chunyi Li\, Zhiyu Liu and Benjamin Sung.\n\nIf time permits\, I will also discuss a strengthen of this result for ch_3 inequality using Frobenius method\, based on joint work with Chunyi Li\, Zhiyu Liu and Alex Perry. This research develops an integrated stochastic and optimization framework for modelling financial growth and formulating investment policies by representing a portfolio as a dynamic compartmental system in which risky and non-risky assets undergo stochastic growth\, loss\, transformation\, and migration. Univariate and bivariate birth–death and migration processes\, together with Markov and hidden-state modelling perspectives\, are employed to characterize the probabilistic evolution and interactions of portfolio components.\n\nThe proposed framework systematically connects stochastic process modelling\, probability analysis\, statistical inference\, nonlinear optimization\, computational analysis\, and decision support. Difference and differential equations are developed to describe portfolio dynamics\, while probability-generating functions and moment-based methods are used to derive expectations\, variances\, covariances\, and related measures under transient and steady-state conditions. These statistical characteristics subsequently serve as inputs to stochastic optimization models that address alternative investment objectives\, including risk control\, volatility management\, portfolio diversification\, and the determination of appropriate investment policy parameters.\n\nComputational experimentation and sensitivity analysis are incorporated to examine the effects of growth\, loss\, and transformation parameters on portfolio behavior\, using real-world financial data to ground empirical exploration and model validation. The resulting framework provides a pathway from uncertainty modelling to quantitative risk assessment\, prescriptive optimization\, and intelligent decision support. Boundary integral equation methods are generally good tools in solving fluid problems by reducing degrees of freedom\, but it is less ideal to handle this ill-conditioning due to its non-local representation. A scattering theory has been proposed to address this in 2D by approximating branches in a network as straight channels\, in which the solution flow follow a \"rapid return to Poiseuille flow\" under pressure drop and no-slip wall condition [Wang 2026]. What explains the power of Ukrainian resistance? Sophia Wilson’s talk will be based on her book about the Ukrainian Maidan Revolution of 2013-14\, showing why it is impossible to understand Russia’s invasion of Ukraine without first understanding the Ukrainian pro-democratic grassroots movement and the rooting out of Russian puppet authoritarianism. Her study of the Ukrainian Revolution gives a carefully researched account of the underbelly of the revolutionary process\, investigating how participants self-organized to create the resistance\, why the peaceful movement eventually turned to violence\, and how the revolutionary process changed those who came to change the country. Wilson will discuss how the people resisted the state in multiple arenas – the protest square\, courtrooms\, hospitals\, churches\, and media – to successfully challenge the constitutionality of the state’s actions. She will also explain how the Kremlin propaganda about the Ukrainian democratic movement captures the essence of Russia’s motivation to suppress Ukraine’s sovereignty and democracy. \n\nAbout the speaker: Dr. Sophia Wilson is a Professor of Political Science at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville\, and the President of the American Association for Ukrainian Studies. Wilson received her Ph.D. from the University of Washington and held fellowships at the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute\, Indiana University Law School\, and Weizenbaum Institute in Berlin. She taught at the Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute in 2017\, 2019 and 2025. Wilson's publications on human rights practices in authoritarian regimes are based on extensive fieldwork she conducted in Tajikistan\, Azerbaijan and Ukraine\, including multiple interviews with judges\, journalists and activists. Her book\, Maidan: Ukraine's Democratic Revolution is an extensive analysis of the grassroots 2013–2014 Revolution of Dignity\, which renegotiated the social contract and reaffirmed democracy in Ukraine. She is currently working on her new book\, Fascism vs. Communism: Ukraine under Three Occupations. This presentation examines how technology\, particularly advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated functions\, can serve as a tool to support safe mobility in later life. Results highlight high availability of ADAS among older drivers but also gaps in training and understanding that may limit safety benefits. \n\nDr. Renée St. Louis is the Head of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute's (UMTRI) Behavioral Sciences Group\, studying social and behavioral factors shaping transportation safety and mobility across the lifespan. She leads research with diverse participants and has co-authored a book on older adult mobility. \n\nDr. Arpan Kusari is an UMTRI research faculty focused on robust challenges in vehicle automation. His next book An Oral History of the Flat Earth is forthcoming from Alice James Books in 2027. A recipient of fellowships from Kundiman\, MacDowell\, and the National Endowment for the Arts\, Olzmann’s poems have appeared in the New York Times\, Best American Poetry\, The Pushcart Prizes\, Kenyon Review\, and elsewhere. He is an assistant professor at Dartmouth College in the Department of English and Creative Writing.\n\nVievee Francis is the author of four books of poetry: The Shared World (Northwestern University Press\, 2023)\; Forest Primeval (TriQuarterly Books\, 2015)\, winner of the 2017 Kingsley Tufts Award and the Hurston Wright Legacy Award\; Horse in the Dark (Northwestern University Press\, 2012)\, winner of the Cave Canem Northwestern University Press Poetry Prize\; and Blue-Tail Fly (Wayne State University Press\, 2006). Forthcoming are a memoir\, Ugly\, and her fifth volume of poetry\, Cleaning the Houses of the Dead. Her work has appeared in numerous print and online journals\, textbooks\, and anthologies including Poetry\, Best American Poetry\, spin.com\, and Angles of Ascent: A Norton Anthology of Contemporary African American Poetry. Born in West Texas and raised in Metropolitan Detroit\, Francis\, along with composer Jonathan Berger and artist Enrico Riley\, wrote the libretto for the transdisciplinary opera The Ritual of Breath. She received a 2024 Guggenheim Fellowship and the 2021 Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry. She has also been the recipient of a Rona Jaffe Award and a Kresge Fellowship.
