The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. The photographs and stories in the exhibit challenge mainstream narratives that reduce Black birth to statistics and only amplify Black pregnant women's anxiety and hesitancy about navigating the maternal health care system. Instead\, the exhibit offers evidence of joy\, reminders of possibility\, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard\, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers\, babies\, partners\, families\, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care\, respectful treatment\, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity\, dignity\, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae\, a doula and birth/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine\, an international publication. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. We present hospitraceR\, an R package designed to facilitate such analyses. hospitraceR includes functions for detecting transmission clusters with two different methods\, the standard SNV threshold approach and a threshold-free approach. It also includes functions that can use patient movement information through the facility to suggest potential transmission explanations for the clusters. hospitraceR seeks to enable users to use multiple methods of transmission cluster detection and compare them easily using cluster comparison metrics. Metrics like the adjusted Rand Index (ARI) and adjusted mutual information (AMI) have been included for this purpose\, as has fraction of converts with shared source (FSS)\, a custom metric designed specifically for comparing transmission clusters. A companion package\, hospitraceRvisualize\, also includes opinionated plotting functions for certain commonplace visualizations that aid in epidemiological interpretations. We apply hospitraceR to a dataset consisting of 4 long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) from Chicago sampled for different periods of time as part of an intervention study and evaluate the two different approaches for cluster detection. We find distinct patterns exhibited by the transmission clusters in different locations and also compare the different clusters obtained with different SNV thresholds and linkage criterion for hierarchical clustering. The hospitraceR package proves to be helpful in facilitating such comparisons and makes it easy to use WGS data to aid epidemiological investigation. We have studied several classes of networks containing different polymer backbone\, pendent group\, and crosslinker structure and sought to better understand how chemical and structural parameters of the networks influence their device performance. In one example\, we have introduced high mobility silicone backbones that lower the glass transition temperature and therefore improve conductivity of the materials. Remarkably\, heterojunctions at the interface of polyanionic and polycationic layers of such networks exhibit strongly temperature-dependent rectification\, providing insight into the critical role of interfacial polymer dynamics in the operation of these devices. In another example\, we have introduced a modular route to prepare polyanionic networks that relies on Sulfur (VI) fluoride exchange (SuFEx) ‘click’ chemistry\, enabling a systematic study of how ionic conductivity depends on the length of short perfluorinated pendent groups. A non-monotonic dependence is identified due to the competing effects of ion association and aggregation. Finally\, we have studied a variety of different crosslinking species as a route to tune conductivity\, stiffness\, and toughness of these materials. \n\n*Bio:*\nRyan Hayward is the Department Chair and Hudson Moore Endowed Professor in Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. He received degrees in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University (B.S.E\, 1999) and the University of California\, Santa Barbara (Ph.D.\, 2004)\, and was a post-doctoral fellow in Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University from 2004-2005 prior to joining the faculty of Polymer Science and Engineering at UMass Amherst in 2006\, where he remained until relocating to the University of Colorado in 2020.
