The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. The photographs and stories in the exhibit challenge mainstream narratives that reduce Black birth to statistics and only amplify Black pregnant women's anxiety and hesitancy about navigating the maternal health care system. Instead\, the exhibit offers evidence of joy\, reminders of possibility\, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard\, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers\, babies\, partners\, families\, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care\, respectful treatment\, and patient rights. Herbivorous eriophyid mites (often referred to as “gall mites”) have long been hypothesized to exploit this mutualism\, yet this hypothesis has remained untested. By combining leaf observations with molecular data\, I investigated whether the gall mite Acalitus ferrugineum acts as an exploiter of the domatia-mediated mutualism in American beech (Fagus grandifolia).\nBut this talk is about more than the scientific findings. I will tell the story of this research twice: first\, as the polished\, seemingly straightforward narrative we typically present at scientific conferences\, and then as the much less predictable journey behind it. From the initial idea to unexpected challenges\, changes in direction\, and the decisions that ultimately shaped our findings\, I will share some of the stories that scientific talks often leave untold. The analysis focuses on lateral tracking accuracy\, run-to-run repeatability\, and vehicle-control response on tangent and curved roadway sections. A real-time framework has been developed to detect pavement-encoded EM strips and estimate lateral offset using an onboard magnetometer array. EM estimates were integrated with GPS-based lateral control through event-triggered source switching. Fifty field runs over 36 strip locations yielded 1\,800 run-strip observations for lateral control performance analysis. A linear 10 mixed-effects model was derived that included localization condition\, roadway section\, and their interaction as fixed effects\, with random intercepts for run and strip. Repeatability was assessed using across-run variability and normalized FastDTW distances between lateral-offset profiles.\n---\nAbout the speakers:\nDr. Jeffery Roesler has been conducting research on a variety of transportation infrastructure topics for the past 25 years. His recent research interest involves passive material sensing for vehicle lateral positioning and construction work zone V2I communication\, micro-scale urban heat island and cool surfaces\, roller compacted concrete pavements\, 3D concrete printing for 1-story structures\, and non-contact ultrasonic sensing system for construction monitoring. He has authored/ co-authored more than 275 publications. But\, what about an app to fill the pothole on your street\, or monitor the flooding risks of local streams\, or raise funds to spruce up your local park? This talk will present ideas from a manuscript under preparation for a book telling the story of five civic urban platforms that have matured into new urban infrastructures in the United States in the past decade: municipal 311\, city data portals\, civic crowdfunding\, open stormwater\, and the use of crowdsourcing to analyze historical racial exclusion. Although these platforms may use similar technical ingredients as smart cities – such as data\, algorithms\, and interfaces – none aim at creating the automated\, optimized city animating the smart city dream. Instead\, they pursue a different\, more digitally connected city\, where technology is fostering new forms of connection\, resilience\, and civic vitality. The book’s original case studies are developed through interviews with the technologists and public servants who created them\, drawing out both the unique stories of each but also identifying generalizable lessons to inspire the next generation of urban technology. The argument of the book is that digital technology isn’t only for building a utopian automated city\, but instead a new type of city that fosters new forms of connections between citizens\, city government\, and the places they share.\n\nRobert Goodspeed\, PhD\, AICP\, is an Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. He teaches and conducts research in the areas of collaborative planning\, urban analytics\, and scenario planning theory and methods. Their coexistence offers a promising route toward realizing Majorana zero modes and fault-tolerant quantum technologies. While studies of topological materials and electron-phonon coupling have largely relied on single particle descriptions\, the role of strong electronic correlations remains unresolved. In particular\, it is unclear (i) how correlations modify electron-phonon coupling [1] and lattice dynamics in determining superconducting transition temperatures and (ii) how electron-electron interactions drive topological systems beyond the single-particle limit. \n\nIn this talk\, I will discuss our efforts to address these questions using parameter tuning-free embedded dynamical mean-field theory (eDMFT) [2]. By combining epitaxial thin-film growth\, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES)\, and scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S). Focusing on FeX (X = Se\, S\, Te) thin films on SrTiO₃ (001)\, we demonstrate a strong dependence of the superconducting transition temperature () on the FeX₄ tetrahedral bond angle\, highlighting the crucial role of lattice geometry in correlated superconductivity [3]. We further present evidence for topological superconductivity and identify a distinct phase that competes with strong electronic correlations[4]. Remarkably\, both the measured superconducting gap and the eDMFT-derived electron-phonon coupling exhibit a dome-shaped dependence on the tetrahedral angle [5]. I will then show how these insights can be extended toward a predictive\, materials-by-design framework for topological superconductivity. Applying a multiscale framework to FeTe₀.₅Se₀.₅ and FeSe/GaAs heterostructures\, we predict multiple topological superconducting phases and identify experimentally viable materials platforms in which topology\, superconductivity\, and strong correlations can be engineered in concert [5\,6]. Together\, these results demonstrate how electronic correlations\, lattice geometry\, and interface engineering can be harnessed to control superconductivity and topology\, providing a pathway toward the rational design of correlated topological quantum materials and future Majorana-based quantum technologies.\n\nReferences:\n[1] S. Street Art and the Performance of Belonging in Tbilisi\, Georgia DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Vandenberg Room (2nd floor) at the Michigan League for a presentation by Greta Uehling\, a 2025-26 Faculty Fellow with the Center for World Performance Studies (CWPS).\n\nStreet art is often understood as a form of cultural resistance in politically constrained societies like Georgia. Professor Greta Uehling will draw on ethnographic fieldwork in Tbilisi\, including interviews with artists\, activists\, and viewers supported to explore the forces that complicate its communicative potential. Uehling extends a Barthian approach that foregrounds the reception of street art and the contested meanings that emerge around it. In this talk\, she will explore the state’s appropriation of street-art aesthetics through government-sponsored projects\, as well as private citizens’ power to veto murals on their buildings. She will then turn to gender as a contested terrain where Georgia’s European aspirations meet enduring social norms. This research was supported by a Faculty Fellowship from the Center for World Performance Studies.\n\nPresented by the Center for World Performance Studies with support from the Center for Russian\, East European\, and Eurasian Studies.\n\nFACULTY BIO\n\nGreta Uehling’s scholarship is broadly concerned with international migration and forced displacement. Major projects have examined the experiences of refugees\, asylum seekers\, and the internally displaced. Her current project explores the subjective experience of military conflict and forced displacement in Ukraine. Based on ethnographic fieldwork\, she documents how the military conflict reconfigured social worlds and how these social worlds became the site of a different\, everyday kind of war.\n\nPrior to teaching in the Program on International and Comparatives Studies\, Uehling consulted with a number of international organizations including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees\, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe\, and the Watson Institute at Brown University.\n\nUehling holds a PhD in cultural anthropology from the University of Michigan. In 2004\, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship with the Solomon Asch Center for the Study of Ethnopolitical Conflict at the University of Pennsylvania. Her first book is *Beyond Memory: The Deportation and Repatriation of the Crimean Tatars*. Her forthcoming book is *Everyday War: The Conflict over Donbas\, Ukraine*. As its title suggests\, it offers the merest hint of an idea\, and its clouds of sound showcase PRISM's flexibility and color. Don Byron's new *Quartet for Saxophones* is a fearless homage to classic film scores of the '50s and '60s\, from the title-sequence swagger of \"Saul Bass\" to a closing \"Fandango.\" Bright Sheng's *Old Tune Renewed* takes its name from a Chinese tradition in which performers reinvent well-known compositions as new works. Sheng builds his piece on a folk song from Northwestern China\, capturing the spirit of singing that rings through open valleys while imbuing it with his own voice. In selections from Chris Potter's epic *Improvisations*\, written for PRISM's Heritage/Evolution series and recorded on *Heritage/Evolution\, Volume 2*\, jazz saxophonist Andrew Bishop improvises over the quartet\, stepping into the solo role first shaped by Potter and Ravi Coltrane on the recording. The program's other two works have deep Michigan roots. Bill Ryan's *Tiny Machines*\, a set of miniatures inspired by the robotic assembly line at Ford's truck plant in Dearborn\, is heard in an arrangement commissioned by the Sinta Quartet.
