He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons, these paintings, along with his later nonconformist work, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars, the 1917 revolution, and political terror, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable, neglected, and marginalized people: children, the elderly, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Born and raised in Jamaica, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte\u2019s artistic practice: the archive, both personal and public, as a site of disturbance; and migration as a lived experience of refuge, refusal, and reinvention. In Whyte\u2019s work, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory, inheritance, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. Far from the all-seeing surveillance machine, the system runs on data that are selectively collected and routinely fabricated\u2014and even then, the state struggles to make the score mean anything, facing constant contestation and reinterpretation. This notorious system, Dr. Liu will suggest, is less an authoritarian anomaly than a sharp lens on the contradictions of governing by numbers anywhere.\n\nChuncheng Liu is a sociologist of knowledge and technology who studies the politics of data and classification. An assistant professor of communication and sociology at Northeastern University, he earned his Ph.D. in sociology and science studies at the University of California, San Diego, and was a postdoctoral researcher at Microsoft Research New England. or even find a place to stay at the push of a button have become household names. But, what about an app to fill the pothole on your street, or monitor the flooding risks of local streams, or raise funds to spruce up your local park? This talk will present ideas from a manuscript under preparation for a book telling the story of five civic urban platforms that have matured into new urban infrastructures in the United States in the past decade: municipal 311, city data portals, civic crowdfunding, open stormwater, and the use of crowdsourcing to analyze historical racial exclusion. Although these platforms may use similar technical ingredients as smart cities \u2013 such as data, algorithms, and interfaces \u2013 none aim at creating the automated, optimized city animating the smart city dream. Instead, they pursue a different, more digitally connected city, where technology is fostering new forms of connection, resilience, and civic vitality. The book\u2019s original case studies are developed through interviews with the technologists and public servants who created them, drawing out both the unique stories of each but also identifying generalizable lessons to inspire the next generation of urban technology. The argument of the book is that digital technology isn\u2019t only for building a utopian automated city, but instead a new type of city that fosters new forms of connections between citizens, city government, and the places they share.\n\nRobert Goodspeed, PhD, AICP, is an Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Michigan\u2019s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. He teaches and conducts research in the areas of collaborative planning, urban analytics, and scenario planning theory and methods. He is the author of the book Scenario Planning for Cities and Regions: Managing and Envisioning Uncertain Futures, over 30 articles and book chapters, and an editor of four edited volumes on urban analytics and smart cities. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), and currently serves as the board chair for Computational Urban Planning and Urban Management (CUPUM), a global society that organizes a leading biennial conference.\n\nThis event is in partnership with the Urban Tech Collective (UTC) housed at the University of Michigan\u2019s Digital Studies Institute. UTC convenes U-M faculty and students from various disciplines investigating the imaginaries, design, and use of digital technologies within urban everyday life.
