He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons, these paintings, along with his later nonconformist work, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars, the 1917 revolution, and political terror, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable, neglected, and marginalized people: children, the elderly, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy, dignity, and admiration. \n\n\u201cFor my father, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie, typically used to hang and bind other material, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell, to slow down, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist, designer, and educator who works across sculpture, installation, sound, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry, exploring themes of labor, precarity, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS\/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology, Science Gallery Detroit, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia, New Media Caucus (NMC), WaveFarm, The Boulder Public Library, The Hyde Park Art Center, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI), International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA), among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website \/ Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image \/ object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist\u2019s interest in embodied experience of space, archival and site responsiveness, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist \/ educator \/ curator currently based in Detroit, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects, he reimagines, and explores within frameworks such as language, the passage of time, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal, transformative, and emotive states through materiality, process, and placement, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer\u2019s encounters with objects and environments. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte\u2019s artistic practice: the archive, both personal and public, as a site of disturbance; and migration as a lived experience of refuge, refusal, and reinvention. In Whyte\u2019s work, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory, inheritance, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. ever-increasing efficiency and speed, of transitions from sail to steam to cargo and futures of automation\u2014of making straight lines. But, for as long as there has been trade (and ships) there have been delays and interruptions\u2014rerouters and rerouting. I argue that disruptions and moments when things appear to be stuck or rerouted are neither aberrations nor failures. Rerouting, far from being an exception, is both the norm and, at times, such as this contemporary moment of wars, sanctions, and tariffs, is a condition desired by many as a mode of profit and possibility.\n\nTo showcase the productive possibilities of rerouting, I focus on one sea route\u2014the Bab-el-Mandeb, a key chokepoint for global trade connecting Europe to Asia and the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean. In 2023, in response to Houthi attacks on merchant ships, this shipping route briefly disappeared, as cargo ships were rerouted through the Cape of Good Hope. I tell this story of this rerouting and its consequences both ephemeral and long-lasting from the perspective of a mobile set of actors in the Red Sea. Locating them within longer histories and wider geographies, I argue for the centrality of interruptions within our understandings of circulation and crossings in the Indian Ocean and beyond.\n\nJatin Dua is an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Michigan (U-M). He also directs the Oceans Lab at U-M, dedicated to collaborative and multimodal ways of engaging oceans as anthropological interlocutors. His research explores maritime mobility, and its perils and possibilities, in the Indian Ocean, focusing on processes and projects of governance, law, and economy. His book, *Captured at Sea: Piracy and Protection in the Indian Ocean, published with the University of California Press* (December 2019) [winner of the 2020 Elliot P. Skinner Book Award; shortlisted for the 2024 Monsoon Book Prize and translated into Italian and Greek] is a multi-sited ethnographic and archival engagement with Somali piracy and contestations over legitimate and illegitimate commerce in the Western Indian Ocean. In addition, he has published several articles on maritime anthropology, captivity, political economy, and sovereignty in *Public Culture*, *American Ethnologist*, *Cultural Anthropology,* *Ethnos*, *Annual Review of Anthropology*, *History and Anthropology* and *Comparative Studies in Society and History*. An abiding question is: what are the limits of energy focusing that can be realized with sonoluminescence? Our attempt at an answer involves a multiscale simulation of an imploding bubble. The fluid must be described by compressible fluid mechanics as the velocity of implosion exceeds Mach 1. The gas containing fluid cavity is described by molecular dynamics as the gradients of temperature and velocity can be very steep. The available energy per atom matches the measured emissivity and temperature, provided the ionization energy is much lower than current theories. Application of compressed ultrafast photography to laser breakdown of dense gases reveals a consistent requirement on the large reduction of the ionization potential in these plasmas. Our multiscale analysis allows predictions for regions of parameter space where energy density concentration is substantially larger.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nSeth Putterman is a Professor of Physics at UCLA, and President of the Julian Schwinger Foundation for Physics Research. He received a BS from Caltech and a PhD from Rockefeller University with George E. Uhlenbeck. Putterman\u2019s thesis on the macroscopic theory of superfluids was expanded into a monograph. His theoretical research in nonlinear fluid mechanics and acoustics motivated him to set up an experimental lab which probed energy-focusing phenomena such as sonoluminescence, X-ray emission from triboelectrification, and crystal-generated nuclear fusion. Putterman [with Porrati] developed the foundational theory of sequential quantum jumps in a driven system such as intermittency in the fluorescence of a single trapped ion. He has served on the Defense Sciences Research Council. His work on sonoluminescence was featured on BBC2 Horizon, \u201cAn Experiment to Save the World\u201d. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and the American Physical Society and recipient of a Sloan Fellowship. Putterman was named the UCLA 2010\u20132011 Faculty Research Lecturer. Currently he is PI on a phase 2 clinical trial at UCLA hospital aimed at curing chronic wounds. Existing convergence analyses typically require uniform regularity assumptions on the policy, viewed as a feedback control function, along the gradient flow; moreover, the resulting convergence rates depend on these regularity bounds. In this work, we significantly strengthen the existing convergence theory. Our key insight is to relate policy gradient descent to a mirror flow on the space of probability measures over controlled trajectories, where the Bregman divergence is induced by the convex control cost. We rigorously prove a JKO-type convergence result showing that the discrete-time mirror flow converges to its continuous-time counterpart, and we identify the limiting dynamics as a preconditioned policy gradient descent flow on the space of control processes. Leveraging this mirror-flow perspective, we establish an exponential convergence rate that is independent of policy regularity. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them, name potential barriers to intervention, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced.
