He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons, these paintings, along with his later nonconformist work, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars, the 1917 revolution, and political terror, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable, neglected, and marginalized people: children, the elderly, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy, dignity, and admiration. \n\n\u201cFor my father, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie, typically used to hang and bind other material, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell, to slow down, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist, designer, and educator who works across sculpture, installation, sound, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry, exploring themes of labor, precarity, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS\/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology, Science Gallery Detroit, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia, New Media Caucus (NMC), WaveFarm, The Boulder Public Library, The Hyde Park Art Center, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI), International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA), among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website \/ Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image \/ object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist\u2019s interest in embodied experience of space, archival and site responsiveness, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist \/ educator \/ curator currently based in Detroit, MI. Through spatial and archive-responsive projects, he reimagines, and explores within frameworks such as language, the passage of time, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal, transformative, and emotive states through materiality, process, and placement, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer\u2019s encounters with objects and environments. An abiding question is: what are the limits of energy focusing that can be realized with sonoluminescence? Our attempt at an answer involves a multiscale simulation of an imploding bubble. The fluid must be described by compressible fluid mechanics as the velocity of implosion exceeds Mach 1. The gas containing fluid cavity is described by molecular dynamics as the gradients of temperature and velocity can be very steep. The available energy per atom matches the measured emissivity and temperature, provided the ionization energy is much lower than current theories. Application of compressed ultrafast photography to laser breakdown of dense gases reveals a consistent requirement on the large reduction of the ionization potential in these plasmas. Our multiscale analysis allows predictions for regions of parameter space where energy density concentration is substantially larger.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nSeth Putterman is a Professor of Physics at UCLA, and President of the Julian Schwinger Foundation for Physics Research. He received a BS from Caltech and a PhD from Rockefeller University with George E. Uhlenbeck. Putterman\u2019s thesis on the macroscopic theory of superfluids was expanded into a monograph. His theoretical research in nonlinear fluid mechanics and acoustics motivated him to set up an experimental lab which probed energy-focusing phenomena such as sonoluminescence, X-ray emission from triboelectrification, and crystal-generated nuclear fusion. Putterman [with Porrati] developed the foundational theory of sequential quantum jumps in a driven system such as intermittency in the fluorescence of a single trapped ion. He has served on the Defense Sciences Research Council. His work on sonoluminescence was featured on BBC2 Horizon, \u201cAn Experiment to Save the World\u201d. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and the American Physical Society and recipient of a Sloan Fellowship. Putterman was named the UCLA 2010\u20132011 Faculty Research Lecturer. Currently he is PI on a phase 2 clinical trial at UCLA hospital aimed at curing chronic wounds. Thayer, at the standard charge of $10\/vehicle.\n\nLonnie G. Bunch III is the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian. He assumed his position June 16, 2019. As Secretary, he oversees 21 museums, 21 libraries, the National Zoo, numerous research centers, and several education units and centers. Two new museums\u2014the National Museum of the American Latino and the Smithsonian American Women\u2019s History Museum\u2014are in development. Bunch was the founding director of the Smithsonian\u2019s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Bunch chronicled the creation of the museum in his book, *A Fool\u2019s Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush, Obama, and Trump*, and is the first historian to be Secretary of the Institution. Since 2024, Bunch has been Honorary Professor of Practice at Queen\u2019s University Belfast. A member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, Bunch received France\u2019s highest award, The Legion of Honor, in 2021.\n\nLynette Clemetson is Director of Wallace House Center for Journalists, home of the Knight-Wallace Fellowships for Journalists and the Livingston Awards for Young Journalists at the University of Michigan. She came to the university from NPR where she was Senior Director of Strategy and Content Initiatives, developing and guiding projects across broadcast, digital and events to develop new audiences. Her career in journalism spans newspapers, magazines and audio across a range of platforms. As a reporter, she was a Washington-based correspondent for *The New York Times *and *Newsweek*, writing about politics, social issues and demographic change. Prior to her domestic correspondent work, she was an international correspondent for *Newsweek *based in Hong Kong, where she covered the former British colony\u2019s return to Chinese rule in 1997. She moved into digital strategy and leadership in 2008 as the founding managing editor of TheRoot.com, launched for The Washington Post Company with Henry Louis Gates Jr. She is also the former Director of Content Strategy at Pew Center on the States.\n\n*This 2026 Marc and Constance Jacobson Lecture is presented by the Institute for the Humanities in partnership with Wallace House Center for Journalists.
