Join this workshop to learn how to build accessibility into your Adobe InDesign documents from the start, shifting from retroactive remediation to a “born accessible” workflow. We’ll briefly discuss key accessibility regulations and what they mean for your documents, then cover design decisions that make a big impact, such as color contrast, font choice, layout, and content organization.

The core of this session will be a guided demonstration of InDesign features that support an accessible output, including text box threading, image anchors and alt text, paragraph styles export options, and much more. We’ll also show you how to export your content to a tagged PDF and provide resources for doing final checks and clean up in Acrobat.

As a participant, you’ll receive access to a sample InDesign file to practice applying accessibility features along with additional resources for continued learning. There will also be time for Q&A.

American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services and Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) captioning services will be provided. If you need additional accommodations to participate in this webinar, please email the ADA Coordinator at ADAcoordinator@umich.edu.
Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit, Michigan. Through the process of textile construction, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.

The artwork is built with time-period paper maps, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory; along with paper-collaged images of people, places and things, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space. In patterns that support the artwork’s theme, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.
There are nearly one million refugees currently living in Poland. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.
In *This Is The Place*, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what, in Poland, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.
Anna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*, *The Guardian*, *The Wall Street Journal*, *The Washington Post*, *El Pais*, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR, Liminowicz divides her time between assignments and long-term personal projects, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project “Too Precious to Leave Behind”.

If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us.
This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing, haptics, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals.

Emily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!), and prior to that, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability.

Nick Sousanis (SFSU), the lead creative organizer of the exhibit, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.

View the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday, October 2nd, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.
Celebrate the centennial of the iconic 1926 “Down in Ann Arbor Town” map by exploring the colorful history, campus traditions, and detailed artistry that made it possible. Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. Through three distinct exhibit sections, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.

While enjoying the exhibit, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. Return your scavenger hunt at the desk for a small prize, while supplies last.

Join the curators — Ava Pustulka (’28) and Anna Rohl, map curator at Clark Library — for a presentation on September 24 (https://myumi.ch/X8y3r), where they will share the research that went into creating the exhibit.",

Just there......no .....it does not proclaim its purpose for blooming is to make people happy. It just is. Like standing in front of an easel and painting........just is.......no matter......what proclamations may be concluded to sway the viewer. Same thing goes for fine art. It’s not about I am a woman....it’s not about I am a first generation Arab American.....it’s not about being a child of trauma....it’s not about a member of my family being gunned down on the street....it’s about being born a painter.....standing in front of my easel and working to create a "Piece of Fine Art". Not standing on some soap box and expecting my words to somehow qualify my painting. It’s the painting, drawing or sculpture that must speak on its own.......on how the artist......via the intellect and muse uses the elements to create something distinct and first rate.
Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter, theater stage designer, teacher, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons, these paintings, along with his later nonconformist work, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.

Having witnessed two world wars, the 1917 revolution, and political terror, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable, neglected, and marginalized people: children, the elderly, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy, dignity, and admiration.

“For my father, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. Art was an expression of freedom, individuality, and personalized creativity, without which it ceased to be art.”
— Galina Lembersky, daughter

Exhibit curated by Yelena Lembersky, granddaughter of Felix Lembersky, and Geneviève Zubrzycki, WCEE Director.

Works on loan from the private collection of Yelena Lembersky.

Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.

If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
Visit the Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room to see historical materials that illustrate women’s changing relationship with food, cooking, and technology during the heady decade of the 1920s, sandwiched between WWI and the Great Depression. This exhibit features materials from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive, as well as select items from the Art, Architecture, and Engineering Special Collections and the Transportation History Collection.

As America rang in a new decade in the 1920s, cookbook authors and appliance manufacturers stood ready to offer the newly emancipated and forward-thinking American woman a vision for her future, a vision that would be scientifically grounded, speedy enough to make time for leisure as well as housework, and guaranteed to bring fun to that most humdrum of chores: planning and preparing meals for a family three times a day, 365 days a year.",

Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.b. You will not be notified of your score automatically. c. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.
Important information about the test* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* Students who are currently taking an Arabic course will not be allowed to take the placement test. * Students who took or are currently enrolled in an Arabic course are not eligible to take the Arabic placement test. They should register for the next course level.* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), NOT colloquial Arabic. * If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. * Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101, 201, 401, 501 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester, and Arabic 102, 202, 402, 504, 511 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 & 102, combined) AND Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202, combined) are offered in the Spring-Summer terms.
UM’s Arabic curriculum is a dual register curriculum in which students learn to speak and understand the Levantine dialect (the dialect of Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Lebanon) in addition to developing the four language skills of formal Arabic (fuSHa).
If you have questions regarding the placement test, please contact the program director at, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu.
Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances. The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings. The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them, name potential barriers to intervention, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session. If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop, or are in need of an exemption, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. The Program Manager will communicate with students requesting exemptions via email and/or meet with students via zoom meetings to discuss their need for exemptions and provide any relevant and necessary resources.

From September 2025 through December 2026, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Southeast Michigan-based, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20); and Sometimes Space, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions, performances, and events, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project, Byrne, Clegg, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:

Phase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)
Phase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)
Phase 3 (September 11 - December 11) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)
Phase 3

Curated by Sometimes Space: Abhishek Narula (entry pillar)
Curated by CYNK Studios: Nathan Byrne (courtyard pillar)

Artist Statements/Bios

Abhishek Narula, Compressions
Compressions is an installation comprised of 416 industrial-grade zip ties, cinched around the entry pillar of the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie, typically used to hang and bind other material, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell, to slow down, and to simply see the pillar.

Abhishek Narula is an artist, designer, and educator who works across sculpture, installation, sound, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry, exploring themes of labor, precarity, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology, Science Gallery Detroit, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia, New Media Caucus (NMC), WaveFarm, The Boulder Public Library, The Hyde Park Art Center, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI), International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA), among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram

Nathan Byrne, Equally To Be Loved
Equally To Be Loved is an image / object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist’s interest in embodied experience of space, archival and site responsiveness, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.

Nathan Byrne is an artist / educator / curator currently based in Detroit, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects, he reimagines, and explores within frameworks such as language, the passage of time, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal, transformative, and emotive states through materiality, process, and placement, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer’s encounters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lecturer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. He has been awarded numerous artist residencies including Anderson Ranch Arts Center, I-Park, KHN Center for the Arts, Prairie Ronde, Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program, and Rockland Woods.

Curated by Srimoyee Mitra

Stamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture, UCLA.

This exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive, both personal and public, as a site of disturbance; and migration as a lived experience of refuge, refusal, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory, inheritance, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory, movement, and belonging.

Presented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and the U-M Library.
The University of Michigan is an institution with diverse communities, interests and opinions. In Fall 2024, the Faculty Senate Office launched this series – Political Speech and the Public Square – to provide a forum for members of the U-M community to present informed, fact-based perspectives, and to listen to and learn from each other. In his essay, “Education as a Space to Change Your Mind,” philosopher Troy Jollimore reminds us of Socrates’ commitment to open-mindedness: “It requires that we work toward developing a sense of the world as a vast and complex place that we can, and ought to, continue to learn about for the rest of our lives.”

Offered in this spirit of intellectual humility, to support the principles of academic freedom, and to develop a campus climate comfortable with hearing different well-informed points of view, even those counter to one’s own views, the lunchtime series will take place on the Diag throughout the Fall. U-M Students, staff, and faculty can sign up in advance to request an opportunity to speak on select topics for 3-5 minutes. Or they can simply come to listen and learn. These events are co-sponsored by the Faculty Senate Office, the Center for Democracy & Civic Empowerment, Open Inquiry: Talking Maize & Blue, and Central Student Government.
Abstract:
The interaction between power systems and wildfires can be dangerous and costly. Distribution grids can be liable for the outbreak of wildfires during extreme weather. In wildfire-prone areas, investment planning should consider the impact of operational actions on wildfire-related uncertainties affecting line failure likelihood. To address this planning exercise, we propose two decision-dependent uncertainty (DDU) aware frameworks to optimize the combination of upgrades to improve the system’s ability to deal with wildfires. The first one is two-stage distributionally robust planning optimization problem with DDU, where the first stage determines optimal switching actions and line investments, and the second stage evaluates the worst-case expected operational cost under a DDU framework designed to account for the endogenous impact of power-flow levels and hardening investment decisions in the line failure probabilities. The second one is a multi-horizon planning framework that integrates these timescales within a single distributionally robust stochastic optimization model to capture both long-term and short-term uncertainties. We develop an exact decomposition algorithm that produces coordinated investment and operational policies across both horizons.

Biography:
Alexandre Moreira is a research scientist in the Energy Technologies Area at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His research applies mathematical programming techniques to critical questions in power systems planning, operations, and economics, with a particular focus on novel methodologies for transmission expansion planning that account for reliability and resilience. At Berkeley Lab, he leads and collaborates on projects that develop foundational modeling frameworks and tools to (i) formulate risk-based optimization and decision-making models to propose transparent, well-informed "cost vs. risk" tradeoffs for infrastructure planning, and (ii) support the valuation of emerging technologies. He holds BSc and MSc degrees from PUC-Rio, Brazil, and a PhD from Imperial College London.

For the most up to date information on the location, please check the related link the week of this event
University of Michigan’s Philosophy, Politics, and Economics speaker for Fall 2026 is Dart Lindsley, CEO of the work design company 11fold and host of Work for Humans.

October 29, 2026 | 4-6 p.m.
FREE, but registration is required.
Rackham Assembly Hall

About Dart
Dart spent 25 years in transformation roles at Fortune 100 high-tech companies, serving as a Strategic Advisor and Head of Global Process Excellence for People Operations at Google, and previously as a Head of Business Architecture at Cisco Systems. He speaks on why we need to radically transform where we position employees in our business models — from inputs to customers. His 2024 HBR article "Reimagining Work as a Product" was nominated as best-of-issue and has gone on to multiple reprints. Work for Humans has 200 episodes on which Dart speaks with diverse thinkers about how we might design better work. The show ranks in the top 3% among all podcasts and routinely peaks in the top 50 in the management category. Dart earned a 2024 Mira Fellowship for thinkers with radical reframes that can improve the world.

About the Talk

Early management theorists committed a category error when they classified employees as inputs to production: assets, resources, human capital. Dart argues that error haunts work today and offers a reframe. Employees are customers. Work is a product they choose to buy with their labor. Like any subscription product, it has to be designed well enough that working customers choose to buy it each day. Building on his HBR article "Reimagining Work as a Product" (with co-author Eric Anicich), Dart shows how this reframe overturns norms, power structures, and how resources are allocated. For researchers it changes the questions, the units of analysis, the standards of evidence. He shares examples from organizations already living in the new world. He'll then use the reframe as a case study in something larger: what it takes to lead a paradigm shift, and the tools that serve anyone striving to redesign institutions to solve the problems of living and working together.

Registration required.
In her upcoming talk, Virginia Krause proposes to fill in a missing chapter in our History of the Novel, which has long overlooked sixteenth-century France in its rush to identify the birth of the modern novel (for modernists) or the demise of medieval romance (for medievalists). In the experimental fictions of mid-sixteenth-century France, ancient rhetorical culture and new print technologies converged, Krause argues, shedding new light on a rapidly evolving genre—its lifelike personas or “person-fictions”; its immersive powers over readers; and, amidst all its experimental properties and “new” technologies, the enduring place occupied by ancient rhetorical culture and medieval adventure, core principles for this genre-in-the-making.

*Biography:*

Professor of French and Francophone Studies at Brown University, Virginia Krause is the author of Witchcraft, Demonology, and Confession in Early Modern France (Cambridge, 2015) and Idle Pursuits (Delaware, 2003). Her talk will be drawn from her new book, The Early Novel in French: Poetics of a Genre in the Making (Northwestern, forthcoming).
As people working in the humanities and the arts, we know our work matters–to our fields, to our disciplines, and to society. We have seen how the arts and humanities transform perception, provide expertise, and help people grapple with the biggest questions about what it means to be human and to live in an increasingly interconnected, yet often divided world. And, in both the arts and humanities, we know UM faculty are contributing to their disciplines in deeply meaningful ways.

Yet, for all we know about these positive effects, arts and humanities research is often imagined to be at odds with the metric-driven language of “impact”--a term often seen as imposed from fields outside the arts and humanities. At the same time, “impact” has become the dominant framework for measuring the value of academic research. As a result, arts and humanities faculty are often called upon to describe our “impact” in ways that are legible to University leadership and funding imperatives, even as we feel uneasy about how to answer such calls in ways that are authentic to our work. How do we avoid finding ourselves outside terms that are increasingly important in the fight for the continued growth and resilience of higher education in the U.S?

“What’s Our Impact?: Understanding how the Arts & Humanities Matter” is a series of events slated for October 29 & 30 on UM’s Ann Arbor campus. A joint initiative of the UM Arts Initiative, Office of Vice President of Research (OVPR), and the Institute for Humanities, the gathering will serve arts and humanities faculty seeking more ways to discuss their work in terms that are legible within the ascendant impact paradigm, while also ensuring that those terms are authentic to our disciplines, methods, and creative practice. Through a public conversation, facilitated workshop, keynote from UM leadership, and a panel with funders, the 1.5 day long event will bring together experts–those engaging “impact” in their research, those in leadership, and those community partners with whom we work–and put them in conversation with arts and humanities leadership and researchers at the University of Michigan. In addition to allowing our communities to come together to elaborate what “impact” means on our terms, this event is also designed to help humanities and arts faculty recognize how they could become more competitive in University grant opportunities, including the Strategic Initiative Fund, the Arts Research: Incubation and Acceleration (ARIA) program, Humanities Institute Fellowship, and a range of other internal and external funding initiatives.

Thursday, October 29, 4:30-6:30
What Works Now: arts and humanities advocacy in the impact paradigm
Pendleton Room, Michigan Union (2nd floor)
a public discussion about making the best case for the arts and humanities with leading voices, including
Professor Jill Dolan, Annan Professor Emeritus of English, Princeton University
Artist, Curator, and Organizer Ryan Myers-Johnson, Executive Director and Founder of Sidewalk Detroit
Professor Shelome Gooden, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research in the Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences and Related Fields, University of Pittsburgh
Jennifer Rupp, President & CEO, Michigan Humanities

Friday, October 30
Michigan Room, Michigan Union (2nd floor)

9-11:30
“Impact” in Our Own Words: a workshop for arts and humanities faculty
Arts and humanities faculty bring current project ideas and experiment with ways of discussing “impact”

11:30: Lunch served

12-12:45: Keynote lunch talk with Vice Provost for Arts & Humanities Sara Blair
Michigan Room, Michigan Union (2nd floor)

1-2:30
Making the Case: Funders on Arts and Humanities Impact
Michigan Room, Michigan Union (2nd floor)
Hear from internal and external funders on how “impact” plays a role in their granting process
If you are only seeing one workshop, please SIGN-IN and refresh the Sessions page! If still having issues, click this link.
First-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required, in-person, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:
“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”
You only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training.
“I see that there is more than one session, does it matter which one I sign up for?”
It generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops.
“Is this workshop required?”
This workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.
“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.”
Our team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment, communication, and boundary setting. However, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.
“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”
Our workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles, including time for self-reflection, small group sharing, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive.
“Can I request accommodations?”
We considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. These workshops also will have a presentation (other workshops we do not) and are a good fit for those who might need a large font. Please sign up for those if you feel that accommodations would assist you and reach out to SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu if you are concerned or have questions.
“I missed my workshop, what should I do ?”
Our team tracks attendance at each workshop by having participants swipe in with their MCard. If you are not able to attend the workshop you signed up for, our team will continue to send reminder emails until you have completed a workshop. In this case, please sign up for another workshop as soon as you can as the workshop is required and may fill up especially near the end of the semester. No need to contact SAPAC unless you are not able to reschedule.
“I have had gender-based violence training before, can I get this requirement waived?”
As this workshop was designed with University of Michigan student feedback in mind, our workshop is unique to the UM community. Our curriculum focuses on individualized reflection and because of its interactive nature, each workshop will be unique to the people attending. Although we are excited you already have familiarity with the subject, this workshop is required for every first year and transfer student.
“I’m a commuter/non-traditional student, do I still have to attend?"
Yes, this workshop is required for every first-year and transfer student - not only do we want every student to benefit from having this time to connect with peers, but we also want to make sure your peers benefit from what you bring to our community. If you have any concerns or questions about being able to participate, please contact SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.
“I still have questions! Who should I contact?"
Please contact us at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.
Please contact us at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.",

This long-awaited, expertly percolated record couldn’t be more timely, giving voice to the memories, desires, rages, joys, and insights of a deeply grounded woman who has found the one place she won’t be talked over.

Phillips will be celebrating her album release with a full band release show, bringing her songs to their intended sonic depth with dense guitar, drum, and synth arrangements. Fans of her beloved, vulnerable listening room performances will finally get a taste of Phillips at her full potential, full power and full volume.",
