SUMMARY:Exhibition:Comics Beyond Sight
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women\, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. Through three distinct exhibit sections\, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.\n\nWhile enjoying the exhibit\, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. DESCRIPTION:Visit the Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room to see historical materials that illustrate women’s changing relationship with food\, cooking\, and technology during the heady decade of the 1920s\, sandwiched between WWI and the Great Depression. This exhibit features materials from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive\, as well as select items from the Art\, Architecture\, and Engineering Special Collections and the Transportation History Collection.\n\nAs America rang in a new decade in the 1920s\, cookbook authors and appliance manufacturers stood ready to offer the newly emancipated and forward-thinking American woman a vision for her future\, a vision that would be scientifically  grounded\, speedy enough to make time for leisure as well as housework\, and guaranteed to bring fun to that most humdrum of chores: planning and preparing meals for a family three times a day\, 365 days a year.

If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment\, communication\, and boundary setting. DESCRIPTION:Between Heaven and Earth\, the haunting and deeply personal new album from Alicia Witt\, arrives August 28 via Thirty Tigers. Recorded live in New York City with producer Joe Henry and a band assembled specifically for the project\, the album exists in a space suspended between transcendence and intimacy\, channeling what Witt describes as “eternal unconditional love” and “the place suspended between heaven and earth.”\n\nThe album was profoundly shaped by the influence and memory of David Lynch\, whose impact on Witt stretches back to her first film role as Alia in Dune at age seven. “I can’t imagine who I would be without David Lynch\,” Witt reflects. “He is weaved throughout the fabric of my life.” Throughout Between Heaven and Earth\, Witt explores what she learned from Lynch “regarding love. The eternal nature of it\, the idea that only love is real.” She describes his presence as palpable throughout the making of the record: “David was with us every day in the studio. All six of us in the band felt his presence.”\n\nWhile widely recognized for her acclaimed acting career spanning film\, television\, and stage\, music has remained a constant throughline in Witt’s life. A classically trained pianist who supported herself as a musician when she first moved to Los Angeles\, Witt has long integrated music into her creative identity\, both through her own songwriting and in many of the roles she has portrayed onscreen. She's released multiple full-length albums\, including Revisionary History (2015)\, The Conduit (2021)\, and I Think I'm Spending Christmas With You (2024). Between Heaven and Earth represents the latest chapter in that ongoing musical journey.\n\nTracked live over four days with vocals and instrumentation recorded simultaneously\, the album embraces what Witt calls a “visceral and eternal” energy\, one that “could never be replicated.” Guided by Henry’s vision and the chemistry of the musicians in the room\, the songs were created instinctively and in the moment\, with minimal overdubs and an openness to what Witt repeatedly refers to as “that place” — the transcendent emotional state she connects to through Transcendental Meditation\, prayer\, creativity\, and Lynch’s work itself.\n\nThe songs on Between Heaven and Earth explore themes of longing\, fate\, healing\, surrender\, nostalgia\, gratitude\, and connection through what Witt describes as a lens of “insistent optimism.” The title track embraces “a mystical connection with a brand new person\,” rooted in “childlike faith in the possibility” and the belief that “it does no harm to dream.” On “Artifacts\,” Witt examines “releasing ancient lessons that no longer serve\,” gently excavating old wounds and learning “how to love.” “Kindred” channels the feeling of “walls crumbling” and “barriers evaporating in a fabric made of light and destiny\,” while “Build Me A Dream” reflects on “constructing the reality we wish to exist in” and recognizing “an eternal soul connection.”\n\nElsewhere\, songs like “Freeze Frame\,” “Test Drive\,” and “Blue Moon” meditate on alternate timelines\, nostalgia\, and the peaceful acceptance of connections that were not meant to remain. “Thank You\,” featuring John Paul White\, transforms heartbreak into gratitude\, reflecting on relationships that “cleared the way for new relationships and opportunities to come in.” On “Love Anyway\,” Witt sings about unconditional love that remains even when unreturned: “The love is what’s important. You love and give love without condition or expectation.”\n\nClosing the album is “The Director\,” a bonus track Witt describes as “communication with David” and “a collection of his words to me since he passed away.” The song was completed spontaneously during the album’s final day in the studio\, recorded in a single uninterrupted performance while the microphones continued running during lunch break. “I just knew when I played this one that it had arrived and was complete at last\,” she recalls.\n\nFor Witt\, Between Heaven and Earth is ultimately about connection — to spirit\, to memory\, to other people\, and to something larger than ourselves. “Too often\, it seems to me\, people imagine love in a vacuum\,” she explains. “I know love to be eternal and unconditional.” The result is an album rooted not in bitterness or regret\, but in surrender\, gratitude\, wonder\, and the belief that “only love can change minds and hearts.”\n\n“What all of these songs have in common is that there is no bitterness\, no angst\, no revenge\, nothing resembling hatred or regret\,” Witt says. “This is my offering.
