SUMMARY:Exhibition:Camille Ann Brewer\, MFA\, MLIS
DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan. Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work. \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space. In patterns that support the artwork’s theme\, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Comics Beyond Sight
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Down in Ann Arbor Town: Pictorial Maps\, Campus Traditions\, and the Women Who Made Them
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the centennial of the iconic 1926 “Down in Ann Arbor Town” map by exploring the colorful history\, campus traditions\, and detailed artistry that made it possible. Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women\, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. Through three distinct exhibit sections\, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.\n\nWhile enjoying the exhibit\, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. Return your scavenger hunt at the desk for a small prize\, while supplies last.\n\nJoin the curators — Ava Pustulka (’28) and Anna Rohl\, map curator at Clark Library — for a presentation on September 24 (https://myumi.ch/X8y3r)\, where they will share the research that went into creating the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Lila Kadaj Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lila Kadaj received her MFA from Wayne State University. Her work has been shown at numerous institutions\, including the Detroit Institute of Arts\, the Cranbrook Art Museum\, and the Arab American National Museum. She spent nearly 27 years teaching art at Detroit Public schools.\n\nArtist statement: “When looking at a beautiful flower. It’s just itself. Just there......no .....it does not proclaim its purpose for blooming is to make people happy. It just is. Like standing in front of an easel and painting........just is.......no matter......what proclamations may be concluded to sway the viewer. Same thing goes for fine art. It’s not about I am a woman....it’s not about I am a first generation Arab American.....it’s not about being a child of trauma....it’s not about a member of my family being gunned down on the street....it’s about being born a painter.....standing in front of my easel and working to create a \"Piece of Fine Art\". Not standing on some soap box and expecting my words to somehow qualify my painting. It’s the painting\, drawing or sculpture that must speak on its own.......on how the artist......via the intellect and muse uses the elements to create something distinct and first rate. It can be quiet or loud. I see so much very weak work uplifted not for its quality but because it’s in fashion.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration. \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. Art was an expression of freedom\, individuality\, and personalized creativity\, without which it ceased to be art.”\n— Galina Lembersky\, daughter\n\nExhibit curated by Yelena Lembersky\, granddaughter of Felix Lembersky\, and Geneviève Zubrzycki\, WCEE Director.\n\nWorks on loan from the private collection of Yelena Lembersky.\n\nContact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Black Birth Joy
DESCRIPTION:Black Birth Joy by Tiana Lashae documents birth as a deeply personal story of connection\, courage\, tenderness\, and joy. The photographs and stories in the exhibit challenge mainstream narratives that reduce Black birth to statistics and only amplify Black pregnant women's anxiety and hesitancy about navigating the maternal health care system. Instead\, the exhibit offers evidence of joy\, reminders of possibility\, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard\, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers\, babies\, partners\, families\, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care\, respectful treatment\, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity\, dignity\, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae\, a doula and birth/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine\, an international publication. The physical exhibit is accompanied by a virtual component that encourages audiences to engage with each mother's birth story.\n\nThe Lane Hall Exhibit Space is sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) at the University of Michigan. \n\nBlack Birth Joy\nThursday\, October 1\, 2026 – Friday\, January 15\, 2027\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\, 204 S State St.\, Ann Arbor\, MI\nOpen M–F\, 9AM–5PM

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Faster and More Fun: American Home Cooking in the 1920s
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room to see historical materials that illustrate women’s changing relationship with food\, cooking\, and technology during the heady decade of the 1920s\, sandwiched between WWI and the Great Depression. This exhibit features materials from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive\, as well as select items from the Art\, Architecture\, and Engineering Special Collections and the Transportation History Collection.\n\nAs America rang in a new decade in the 1920s\, cookbook authors and appliance manufacturers stood ready to offer the newly emancipated and forward-thinking American woman a vision for her future\, a vision that would be scientifically grounded\, speedy enough to make time for leisure as well as housework\, and guaranteed to bring fun to that most humdrum of chores: planning and preparing meals for a family three times a day\, 365 days a year.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Small Works: Prints & Book Objects from Detroit\, 2020–2026
DESCRIPTION:Small Works\nPrints & Book Objects from Detroit 2020–2026\n\nOctober 27 - November 19 \nPublic Reception: Friday\, November 13 from 4:30-6pm.\n\nSmall Works was a print shop ran by Li Chen & Gerald Schulze\, in Detroit\, MI\, from 2020–2026. Mariana Matos joined as the studio assistant\, and later studio manager\, in 2024. Over those six years\, the business grew from an extension of their design practice to a community space that hosts more than 70 classes a year\, open studio for the public\, and year long funded fellowships that investigate practice in art and design related to the Book Arts. In 2026\, they decided to expand community programming\, and to accommodate this expansion closed Small Works\, and formed Center for the Book Arts Detroit (BAD) which operates in the same space.\n\nThis exhibition is a eulogy for the former Small Works shop\, and a celebration of all the people who made work here. It also serves to show what is possible as a community\, when they share space and create work together. \n\nThe work featured is a collection of things printed by Small Works\, by their studiomates Diskette Press\, the publisher Maamoul Press\, and by the community that uses the space.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Applied Physics | Active and living solids
DESCRIPTION:From cytoskeletal networks to cells and tissues\, numerous biological systems behave as elastically coupled active materials. Yet little is known about the emergent properties of active solids and their implications for biology. I will highlight recent and ongoing work on exploring dynamics\, energetics\, failure\, growth\, etc.\, in active solids and discuss functional consequences for physiology and morphogenesis.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Woll Family Speaker Series Presents: Dr. Tyler Johnson
DESCRIPTION:About the Talk:\nDr. Tyler Johnson is a clinical associate professor of medicine and oncology at the Stanford University School of Medicine\, where he leads the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program and is a principal medical school faculty member. A prolific author and podcaster\, Dr. Johnson explores the place of religion in a post-modern and often secular world through his writing at the \"On The Road to Jericho\" Substack and through recorded conversations at the \"The Doctor's Art\" podcast. Dr. Johnson's lecture will examine what nearly 200 hours of discussion with philosophers\, clerics\, theologians\, doctors\, nurses\, patients\, and authors have taught him about the role of the sacred in the practice of modern medicine and the need for mystery in a realm usually ruled by a devotion to science.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture and Health (Emily M. Briceño)
DESCRIPTION:RCGD Fall 2026 Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture & Health\, meets Mondays 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 6050.\n\nGlobal Perspectives on Culture and Health explores fundamental aspects of human life. Culture facilitates human interaction by providing meaning to lived experience. Accounting for culture in both theories and methods potentially advances the study of health by connecting the macro and micro levels of human experience. Yet\, culture should be understood as dynamic and complex. It fundamentally shapes individuals and simultaneously is shaped by individuals. The importance of systematically attending to culture includes topics of values\, language\, immigration\, and society.\n\nTheories and methods that incorporate culture hold great potential for advancing the understanding of health outcomes and health trajectories in various global contexts.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on various aspects of culture and diverse groups living in the U.S. and across the globe to address the ways in which attending to culture helps clarify and overcome challenges to good health.\n\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included political polarization\, evolution and human behavior\, and cultural psychology.\n\nIn person: ISR Thompson 6050\, unless otherwise specified.\nOrganized by Kristine Ajrouch and Sela Panapasa\nEvents are not recorded.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Depressed Mothers and Rebellious Sons: Relationships in the History of American Mood Disorders
DESCRIPTION:The formal diagnosis of adult major depressive disorder emerged in the 1970s in the context of research with medication\, though disagreement about whether children could experience depression was not resolved until the 1980s and 1990s. Many critics and scholars have interrogated the construction of psychiatric diagnosis in the United States. This talk will attend to the relationships that formed the backdrop in depression research\, especially between depressed mothers and their rebellious sons. In the process of creating purportedly objective categories of illness\, relationship dynamics were redefined as genetic propensity\, while the brain was located as a value-neutral site\, away from social context.\n\nLaura Hirshbein\, MD\, PhD is the George E Wantz MD Distinguished Professor of the History of Medicine at the University of Michigan. She is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and director of the Program of the History of Medicine and Public Health within the Center for History\, Humanities\, the Arts\, Social Sciences\, and Ethics of Medicine (CHHASSEM).\n\nShe has published two books (American Melancholy in 2009 and Smoking Privileges in 2013)\, and her third book is forthcoming from Columbia University Press (Troubled). She is editor-in-chief of the Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Dynamics Seminar: Yet another unstabilizable rational surface map
DESCRIPTION:I will discuss a newly identified example of a plane rational map that has constant Jacobian determinant relative to the natural holomorphic volume form on the algebraic torus. A distinguishing feature is that it `tropicalizes' as a self-map of the circle that is topologically conjugate to angle doubling. Using this and post-composing with an appropriate monomial map we get a new and rather different example of a rational surface map that is not birationally conjugate to any algebraically stable map. This work\, joint with Chase Bender and Holly Krieger\, relies on some AI input\, but maybe not where you'd guess it does.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Easy to Collect\, Costly to Bear: Mobile Money Taxation and Network Spillovers in Tanzania
DESCRIPTION:This paper provides evidence that a tax on mobile money transactions shrinks its base by an order of magnitude more than taxes on income or turnover do\, that the base responds to whether it is taxed rather than to how much\, and that the damage spreads through the payment network to users and payments the law never taxed. First\, using the complete transaction records of Tanzania’s three largest providers around the introduction of a notched levy on person-to-person transfers and cash withdrawals in July 2021\, we show that the levy reduces the volume of taxed transactions by 23 percent and their average value by 13 percent relative to untaxed transactions on the same platform\, an elasticity with respect to the net-of-tax price of about 10. Second\, we show that a cut of about 30 percent seven weeks later brings none of it back\, nor do two further cuts\, while the removal of the levy on transfers in 2023 does\, slowly. Third\, we document that relationships between senders and receivers survive at two-thirds the normal rate\, that new ones form at less than half the pre-levy pace\, and that senders stop rerouting activity around recipients who go quiet\; none of these margins recovers when the tax rate falls. Fourth\, we find that the levy reaches activity it does not tax\, as wages paid into wallets fall by a fifth\, and that senders of every size cut back by a similar share\, whether or not they have a bank account. Fifth\, we estimate that the levy destroys 47 cents of surplus for every shilling it raises\, several times the cost of a value-added tax in comparable settings.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: Modular Character Sheaves and Monodromic Hecke Categories
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Character sheaves provide a geometric framework for studying characters of finite groups of Lie type. Introduced by Lusztig in the 1980s\, they played a central role in the classification of irreducible complex representations of these groups and in the computation of their characters. Although the definition of character sheaves can be formulated with modular coefficients\, much of Lusztig's characteristic-zero machinery breaks down in this setting.\n\nIn this talk\, I will give a streamlined overview of the theory of character sheaves using modern language from categorical representation theory. From this perspective\, categorical traces allow one to study character sheaves through monodromic Hecke categories. I will describe two models for these categories: a geometric categorification in terms of parity sheaves and an algebraic categorification in terms of Soergel bimodules. A key advantage of these models is that they are tightly controlled by p-Kazhdan–Lusztig combinatorics. This paves the way for a more algebraic study of modular character sheaves.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:How plabic graphs describe weakly separated collections
DESCRIPTION:Two k-element subsets I\,J of {1\,2\,…\,n} are weakly separated if the sets I\J and J\I (when drawn on a circle with vertices 1\,2\,…\,n) can be separated by a chord. A maximal weakly separated collection is a set of pairwise weakly-separated k-element subsets of {1\,2\,…\,n} that is not contained in any larger set with this property. This definition gives rise to natural combinatorial questions: How big is a maximal weakly separated collection? How many are there? How are they related to each other?\n\nI will outline how Oh\, Posknikov\, Speyer answered most of these questions via a bijection between maximal weakly separated collections in a positroid and move-equivalent plabic graphs. Along the way\, we’ll meet some fun combinatorial objects related to plabic graphs including bounded affine permutations\, Grassmann necklaces\, positroids\, and plabic tilings.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ISRMT Seminar: On Hirota's discrete KP equation - from geometry to multiple bi-orthogonal polynomials
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We generalize the well known connection between the Toda lattice equation\, Pade approximants and orthogonal polynomials to the level of the Hirota system. We first present incidence geometric meaning of the multidimensional consistency of the system and its relation to Zamoldchikov's tetrahedron equation. Then we show how Hermite-Pade approximants and multiple orthogonal polynomials provide certain solutions to the Hirota system and its linear problem. Finally\, we extend the construction to the case of bi-moments and quasi-determinants.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Teresa Poggi Lecture on Italy and the Mediterranean World. “Signor Presidente:\" Giorgia Meloni and the Italian Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni became the first far-right leader of Italy since Fascism and the first woman to ever lead the country. Four years later\, Meloni has proven resilient\, despite challenging economic indicators and after losing a referendum to limit the independence of the judiciary. A skillful politician\, Meloni has deftly navigated between Italy’s commitments to the European Union and the country’s longtime strategic alliance with the United States\, even as the Trump Administration has pushed to scale back NATO in Europe\, causing confusion and distress in Europe’s halls of power.\n\n From Fascism to the personality-driven phenomenon of Silvio Berlusconi to the anti-system Five Star Movement\, Italy has always been a political laboratory\, a harbinger of political trends to come. With this lens\, what larger lessons can we draw from Meloni’s leadership about the direction of Italy and Europe? Has Meloni normalized the far right or transformed it into a mainstream conservative movement? What are her most concrete accomplishments? As a study in power\, what do we make of this small\, blonde\, fierce woman who insists on using the masculine form of address\, “Signor Presidente”?\n \nThe annual Teresa Poggi Lecture on Italy and the Mediterranean World focuses on contemporary and historical issues related to the region. It is made possible by a generous gift from Stephanie and Sue Augustyniak in honor of their mother.\n \nRachel Donadio is a Paris-based writer\, a contributing writer for *The Atlantic*\, and a former Rome Bureau Chief and European Culture Correspondent for *The New York Times*. She regularly publishes textured profiles and features at the intersection of culture and politics\, as well as literary criticism\, and is a frequent contributor to *The New York Review of Books*. Donadio has reported from more than two dozen countries and interviewed heads of state and major cultural figures\, including four Nobel Laureates in literature.\n \nIn her many years covering Italy\, she has written on Giorgia Meloni’s culture wars\, Curzio Malaparte\, Nicola Gratteri when he was a leading Italian anti-Mafia prosecutor\, former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi\, Gina Lollobrigida\, Paolo Sorrentino\, a rare book theft in Naples\, why Italians gesticulate\, Amalfi lemons\, a family of centenarians in Sardinia\, a Bangladeshi Cricket league in Rome\, and the first non-Italian director of the Uffizi. She has also covered the Vatican and led *The New York Times* coverage of the conclave in which Pope Francis was elected.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact gosiak@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Film Screening:The Chinese Mayor
DESCRIPTION:Watch the documentary The Chinese Mayor (2015\, 86 mins.)\, followed by discussion with Hao Zhou\, the film's director\, and Lan Deng\, professor and chair of the Urban and Regional Planning Program in the U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Light refreshments provided.\n\nOnce the thriving capital of Imperial China\, the city of Datong is now among the country’s most polluted cities\, burdened by aging infrastructure and uncertain economic prospects. Mayor Geng Yanbo announces an ambitious plan to restore Datong to the cultural center it was 1\,600 years ago. The plan comes at a devastating cost: thousands of homes will be demolished\, and half a million residents — 30 percent of Datong’s population — will be relocated. The Chinese Mayor offers remarkable access to a leader\, and to a country\, moving urgently toward an increasingly unstable future. It also allows audiences to draw their own conclusions about the promises and costs of the mayor’s project\, while raising questions that continue to echo today.\n\nThe CHOP (China Ongoing Perspectives) film series is sponsored by the U-M Library (Asia Library) and the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Exploring the Mind | Pleasure\, Desire\, and Addiction in the Brain
DESCRIPTION:How is pleasure (‘liking’) different from desire (‘wanting’)\, and how are they generated by the brain? Answering those questions is crucial to understanding addiction\, compulsivity\, and many other aspects of human behavior. Our work at Michigan helped show that the brain’s mesolimbic dopamine system is not a pleasure ‘liking’ mechanism as was once thought\, but rather only a motivational ‘wanting’ mechanism. Separate brain opioid hedonic hotspots generate feelings of ‘liking’.\n\nIn addiction\, drug-induced sensitization of dopamine systems in vulnerable individuals can amplify ‘wanting’ to arguably compulsive levels\, even when what is desired does not provide pleasure once obtained. A recent animal laboratory demonstration is ‘wanting what hurts:’ desiring experiences that give no pleasure at all\, as a prototype of how addictive compulsion works. Incentive sensitization helps explain how addiction can create a vulnerability to relapse that persists despite sincere desire to quit\, even long after drugs are no longer taken.\n\nAbout the speaker: Kent Berridge is James Olds Distinguished University Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Michigan. Research in Berridge’s lab has aimed for better answers to questions such as: How is pleasure (‘liking’) generated by the brain? How is desire (‘wanting’) generated by the brain? How does wanting something differ from liking it? And how does addiction become compulsive?

SUMMARY:Performance:John Splithoff Stripped Tour
DESCRIPTION:John Splithoff is a songwriter\, singer\, and multi-instrumentalist who splices together throwback soul\, modern production\, and laid-back pop. A native of Chicago\, Splithoff began gaining momentum following the independent release of his breakout single\, \"Sing to You.” Driven by a hypnotic howl\, breezy guitar\, and an unbreakable bounce\, the track generated over 100 million streams\, occupied coveted real estate on noted Spotify playlists and reached the top 8 at AC Radio\, paving the way for Splithoff to continue to release music to a growing fanbase. \n\nSplithoff has toured globally as a headliner with appearances at renowned festivals from Lollapalooza to Bonnaroo\, building a reputation for shows that are equal parts intimate and electric. \n\nFollowing the release of his sophomore album Far From Here\, Splithoff is at work on his next studio album while revisiting his catalogue with fresh\, stripped-back arrangements of fan-favorite songs.

SUMMARY:Performance:Matt Nathanson - To The Point Solo Tour 2027
DESCRIPTION:Over three decades\, Matt Nathanson has built a career on sharp songwriting\, disarming honesty\, and a live show that feels more like group therapy than a concert. He broke through with Some Mad Hope\, which launched the RIAA multi-platinum hit “Come On Get Higher” and introduced his gift for pairing intimacy with arena-sized hooks. His catalog has since generated more than 2.27 billion streams worldwide\, and in 2026\, he was inducted into Pandora’s Billionaire Club. \n\nHe followed with Modern Love\, hailed by PopMatters as “the closest a pop album comes to perfection\,” producing the Gold-certified singles “Faster” and “Run” (featuring Sugarland). 2013’s Last of the Great Pretenders debuted at #16 on the Billboard 200 and hit #1 on iTunes’ Alternative chart\, cementing Nathanson as one of the most consistent voices in modern pop-rock. Later releases\, including Sings His Sad Heart\, continued his exploration of romantic idealism and self-interrogation\, producing the Adult Top 40 hit “Used To Be.” \n\nBut Nathanson’s longevity isn’t built on chart stats alone. It’s built on connection. His songs carry a restless self-awareness\, questioning his own patterns as much as anyone else’s\, delivered with a humor that keeps the heaviest moments grounded. That balance between emotional depth and self-aware commentary has earned him a fiercely loyal audience that has grown up alongside him. \n\nA devoted music obsessive\, Nathanson has also built a reputation for reimagining the albums that shaped him. His Def Leppard–approved tribute to Pyromania\, titled Pyromattia\, topped the iTunes Alternative chart and earned praise from Joe Elliott for its “heart & soul.” He later revisited U2’s Achtung Baby with Achtung Matty\, honoring one of his formative influences while making the material distinctly his own. In 2026\, he turned to another enduring influence\, Billy Joel\, performing at the celebrated Carnegie Hall tribute to the songwriter and releasing Songs In The (M)Attic\, an EP featuring his interpretations of Joel’s songs. \n\nOnstage\, he’s as quick with a punchline as he is with a confessional lyric\, a combination that has taken him from intimate theaters to amphitheaters and onto national platforms including The Howard Stern Show\, Late Night with Conan O’Brien\, Jimmy Kimmel Live!\, Ellen\, Dancing with the Stars\, Rachael Ray\, and The CMA Awards. He’s also been featured on NPR’s World Cafe\, Mountain Stage\, and Acoustic Café\, a rare artist equally at home in listening rooms and the broader cultural spotlight. \n\nThree decades in\, Matt Nathanson remains what he’s always been: a songwriter unafraid of vulnerability\, still chasing the perfect line\, and still willing to laugh at himself along the way.
