DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan.  Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.  \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space.  In patterns that support the artwork’s theme\, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Comics Beyond Sight
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the centennial of the iconic 1926 “Down in Ann Arbor Town” map by exploring the colorful history\, campus traditions\, and detailed artistry that made it possible. Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women\, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. Through three distinct exhibit sections\, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.\n\nWhile enjoying the exhibit\, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. DESCRIPTION:Lila Kadaj received her MFA from Wayne State University. Her work has been shown at numerous institutions\, including the Detroit Institute of Arts\, the Cranbrook Art Museum\, and the Arab American National Museum.  She spent nearly 27 years teaching art at Detroit Public schools.\n\nArtist statement: “When looking at a beautiful flower.  It’s just itself.  Just there......no .....it does not proclaim its purpose for blooming is to make people happy. It just is. Like standing in front of an easel and painting........just is.......no matter......what proclamations may be concluded to sway the viewer. Same thing goes for fine art.  It’s not about I am a woman....it’s not about I am a first generation Arab American.....it’s not about being a child of trauma....it’s not about a member of my family being gunned down on the street....it’s about being born a painter.....standing in front of my easel and working to create a \"Piece of Fine Art\". Not standing on some soap box and expecting my words to somehow qualify my painting. It’s the painting\, drawing or sculpture that must speak on its own.......on how the artist......via the intellect and muse uses the elements to create something distinct and first rate.   It can be quiet or loud. I see so much very weak work uplifted not for its quality but because it’s in fashion.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Black Birth Joy
DESCRIPTION:Black Birth Joy by Tiana Lashae documents birth as a deeply personal story of connection\, courage\, tenderness\, and joy. The photographs and stories in the exhibit challenge mainstream narratives that reduce Black birth to statistics and only amplify Black pregnant women's anxiety and hesitancy about navigating the maternal health care system. Instead\, the exhibit offers evidence of joy\, reminders of possibility\, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard\, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers\, babies\, partners\, families\, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care\, respectful treatment\, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity\, dignity\, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae\, a doula and birth/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine\, an international publication. This exhibit features materials from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive\, as well as select items from the Art\, Architecture\, and Engineering Special Collections and the Transportation History Collection.\n\nAs America rang in a new decade in the 1920s\, cookbook authors and appliance manufacturers stood ready to offer the newly emancipated and forward-thinking American woman a vision for her future\, a vision that would be scientifically  grounded\, speedy enough to make time for leisure as well as housework\, and guaranteed to bring fun to that most humdrum of chores: planning and preparing meals for a family three times a day\, 365 days a year.

DESCRIPTION:Small Works\nPrints & Book Objects from Detroit 2020–2026\n\nOctober 27 - November 19 \nPublic Reception: Friday\, November 13 from 4:30-6pm.\n\nSmall Works was a print shop ran by Li Chen & Gerald Schulze\, in Detroit\, MI\, from 2020–2026. Mariana Matos joined as the studio assistant\, and later studio manager\, in 2024. Over those six years\, the business grew from an extension of their design practice to a community space that hosts more than 70 classes a year\, open studio for the public\, and year long funded fellowships that investigate practice in art and design related to the Book Arts. In 2026\, they decided to expand community programming\, and to accommodate this expansion closed Small Works\, and formed Center for the Book Arts Detroit (BAD) which operates in the same space.\n\nThis exhibition is a eulogy for the former Small Works shop\, and a celebration of all the people who made work here. It also serves to show what is possible as a community\, when they share space and create work together. \n\nThe work featured is a collection of things printed by Small Works\, by their studiomates Diskette Press\, the publisher Maamoul Press\, and by the community that uses the space.

DESCRIPTION:Gift of Life is a national bone marrow and stem cell registry that connects patients battling blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma with donors who can save their lives. Most patients don't have a match in their family\, so they rely on strangers joining the registry. Our University of Michigan chapter has added over 2\,700 Wolverines to the registry\, leading to 18 confirmed matches and 3 life-saving transplants. This fall's Swab Week runs November 2 to 6 on the Diag\, and this week we are going up against Ohio State in registrations. Joining takes about five minutes: fill out a quick form and swab your cheek. If you're between 18 and 35 and in good health\, stop by\, bring your friends\, and you could be the match that gives someone a second chance at life. If your interested in volunteering please reach out we would love to have you help out. Go Blue!

DESCRIPTION:In species that use sex chromosomes to differentiate between its sexes\, there is a difference in sex chromosome number and the number of gene copies which results in unequal gene dosage. In species that cannot tolerate this imbalance in gene dosage\, the dosage compensation process is applied in which the gene expression levels between the two sexes are made equal. In mammals\, female somatic cells (XX) have one X chromosome inactivated to equalize to the single X chromosome in male somatic cells (XY). In C. elegans\, hermaphrodites (XX) downregulate both X chromosomes by half to equalize to the single X chromosome in their male counterparts (XO). \n\nDosage compensation in C. elegans is conducted primarily by the Dosage Compensation Complex (DCC)\, a multimeric set of proteins including a CondensinIDC complex and several additional proteins that bind\, compact and downregulate the X chromosomes in hermaphrodites. One of the non-condensin proteins in the DCC is DPY-21\, a Histone 4 Lysine 20 (H4K20)- specific demethylase. DPY-21 binds to the hermaphroditic X chromosomes and converts H4K20 di-methylation (H4K20me2) into mono-methylation (H4K20me1). This results in the enrichment of the repressive H4K20me1 mark on the X and the transcriptional downregulation of the X chromosomes. Although DPY-21 is part of the DCC\, it localizes to the X chromosomes at a later stage of embryogenesis and does not bind mitotic chromosomes\, contrasting to the other DCC components. Additionally\, DPY-21 has been shown to have a DCC-independent role in the germline where dosage compensation in unrequired. This drives the question of the regulation of DPY-21 and its interactors in addition to the DCC. \n\nThe first part of my thesis is the characterization of DPY-21 regulation through phosphorylation. Using CRISPR/Cas9 site-directed mutagenesis\, I generated a dpy-21 phosphomutant C.elegans strain by mutating the phosphosites of DPY-21 into Alanines to render them non-phosphorylatable. Through physiological assays\, I found that the dpy-21 phosphomutant C. elegans strain has defects in embryogenesis and larval stages. In embryogenesis\, the phosphomutations disrupts DPY-21’s localization to the X chromosomes and delays the enrichment of H4K20me1 to the X chromosomes. Through biochemical and imaging analysis\, I demonstrate that the global levels of 4K20me1 is increased in the phosphomutant strain\, suggesting that the mutant protein may be hyperactive. At the larval stages\, the dpy-21 phosphomutant strain exhibits developmental delay and increased propensity to form dauers. These defects are resolved by  adulthood which implies that DPY-21’s activity is most critical in the embryonic and larval stages.\n\nThe second part of my work revealed novel interactors  of DPY-21. I conducted an immunoprecipitation-mass spectrometry (IP-MS  ) on DPY-21 to establish its interacting partners and found the kinase SPK-1 to be a top interactor of DPY-21. In spk-1 mutants\, there is delayed H4K20me1 enrichment on the X chromosomes in embryogenesis which ultimately results in disrupted H4K20me1 enrichment on the X chromosomes in adults. This shows that SPK-1 may regulate DPY-21 although this may be indirect. Taken together\, my work has characterized a novel dpy-21 mutant for the field that leads to its hyperactivity in generating H4K20me1 globally as well as the novel interactor SPK-1 that may regulate DPY-21.

DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

DESCRIPTION:Seminar Summary - The number of beneficial substitutions (N) required for an adapting population to reach a fitness peak is a fundamental but unknown parameter of evolution. We find that N increases linearly with the number of variable sites in empirical fitness landscapes\, regardless of prior adaptation in another environment. Extrapolation suggests a minimal N of 10⁵ for typical prokaryotes and 10⁷ for mammals. In contrast\, in highly rugged shuffled landscapes\, N is markedly reduced\, while fitness gains also shrink. The relatively smooth empirical landscapes therefore enable greater fitness gains while lengthening adaptive walks\, rendering even local fitness peaks effectively unreachable because natural environments inevitably change. These results explain the persistence of fitness gains in long-term evolution experiments under constant environments and the widespread occurrence of beneficial mutations across species. They suggest that populations continuously adapt while remaining far from fitness optima\, challenging the long-held view that adaptation culminates at fitness peaks.

Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/gk19J\n\nIn the early years of the People’s Republic of China\, state tourism officials saw sightseeing as a form of public diplomacy\, but noted also that they could earn as much from hosting just one Soviet tourist as they could from exporting a ton of steel. At the same time\, the vast majority of visitors to China during the Mao years came from China’s diaspora\, which officials referred to as “another province overseas” that could contribute to the economic and political foundations of the new nation. This talk will examine the challenges faced by China’s state tourism officials in promoting foreign and diaspora tourism as a form of public diplomacy and economic development from the founding of the PRC to the Cultural Revolution.\n\nGavin Healy is a center associate of the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan and has taught Chinese history at Columbia University and the State University of New York. He is the author of *A Guide to Mao’s China: Showing the Nation to Foreign Guests* (Cornell University Press\, 2026). His work appears in *20th Century China*\, *Modern China*\, and the *Journal of Contemporary History*.

DESCRIPTION:Leveraging the nature of quantum phenomena\, quantum technologies are advancing rapidly in computing\, communication\, and sensing. Quantum inertial sensors based on light-pulse atom interferometry are powerful tools for precision measurements\, navigation\, geoscience\, and civil engineering. By contrast to classical sensors\, atom interferometers use photon momentum to coherently split and recombine matter waves. Since the laser wavelength precisely determines photon momentum\, atom interferometers are highly accurate and have demonstrated unprecedented sensitivity and stability. In this talk\, I will present compact and versatile atom interferometers for measuring the local gravity field and sensing multi-axis accelerations and rotations. With simplicity and sensitivity\, our technology paves the way for deploying quantum sensors in field applications.\n\nBio: Dr. Xuejian Wu joined the Physics Department at Rutgers University-Newark in January 2021. From 2015 to 2020\, he was a postdoctoral scholar in the Physics Department at the University of California\, Berkeley. In January 2015\, Dr. Wu received his PhD from Tsinghua University\, China. Dr. Wu serves as an associate editor for Optics Express and an editorial board member for Atoms.

DESCRIPTION:Gibbs measures were first introduced in statistical mechanics\, where they have been used to describe statistical equilibria of physical systems. In recent years\, there has been significant interest in the dynamics of Gibbs measures under heat\, wave\, and Schrödinger equations. In the first part of the talk\, we will discuss the invariance of Gibbs measures under the cubic nonlinear wave equation. In the second part of the talk\, we will then discuss the global well-posedness of the stochastic Yang--Mills heat flow. \n\nThe talk is based on joint works with Y. Deng\, A. Nahmod\, and H. Yue\, and separately with S. Cao\, M. Hairer\, and W. Zhao.

Older adults are typically set in their ways\, so AI agents should adapt to their ways of doing things\, rather than the other way around.  To that end\, we are exploring various approaches to learning to personalize assistive agents\, including the use of bandit algorithms\, foundational models\, neuro-symbolic architectures\, and theory of mind.  This talk will present our approaches and results in several assistive areas\, including meal preparation and exercise coaching\, as well as work in learning policies from humans.  Much of the research is being supported by AI-CARING\, an NSF-sponsored Institute devoted to developing AI technologies to help older adults with cognitive and physical decline remain in their homes.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Dr. Reid Simmons is a Research Professor in the Robotics Institute and Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University.  He received his PhD from MIT in Artificial Intelligence\, and since coming to CMU in 1988\, his research has focused on developing self-reliant robots that can autonomously operate over extended periods of time in unknown\, unstructured environments\, and on human-robot social interaction\, especially non-verbal communication through affect\, proxemics\, motion\, and gesture.  He is co-PI and Research Director for the NSF-sponsored AI-CARING Institute.  Dr. Simmons is an author of over 250 publications on AI\, Robotics\, and Human-Robot Interaction and has graduated 25 PhD students.  He previously served as a Program Director at the National Science Foundation\, where he oversaw the National Robotics Initiative and initiated the Smart and Autonomous Systems program.  In 2018\, Dr. Simmons helped found the first-in-the-nation standalone undergraduate major in Artificial Intelligence and currently serves as its program director.  He is a Fulbright Scholar\, a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence\, a Senior Member of IEEE\, and was an ONR Summer Faculty Fellow in 2022.

If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment\, communication\, and boundary setting. However\, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming\, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”\nOur workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles\, including time for self-reflection\, small group sharing\, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! DESCRIPTION:“Buoyant\, soulful” –Billboard \n\nBeloved London-born\, Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Teddy Thompson has returned with the exquisitely crafted Never Be The Same\, his first collection of original material since 2020. Across ten tracks\, Thompson refines his craft via an exploration of music’s enduring preoccupations — love\, longing\, and the uneasy passage of time.\n\nThis album wasn’t built upon a grand narrative. There was no self-imposed exile\, no forced reinvention. Instead\, it is centered around an exhortation that is threaded through the songs like a refrain: “Never Be The Same\,” its title only revealing itself to Thompson after he’d completed the recording.\n\n“It’s a phrase that\, unconsciously\, I used twice. And when I saw it on the page\, I realized\, this is the message of this album\,” says Thompson. “Don’t ever be the same. Change. Grow! Even when the sentiment is\, woe is me\, I’ll never recover after that love or loss. The message is still\, change. Don’t get too comfortable. Everything is temporary\, so evolve or perish!”\n\nThis pull and tension between comfort and change runs quietly throughout Never Be The Same\, Thompson’s 11th album\, which was produced by renowned Grammy Award–winning musician/producer David Mansfield. At the core is Thompson’s longstanding commitment to songwriting as a form\, inspired by early influences like Chuck Berry\, Hank Williams\, and Crowded House\, as well as the towering figures of the craft — Bob Dylan\, Leonard Cohen\, The Beatles\, and\, certainly\, his parents\, British folk icons Richard and Linda Thompson.\n\nUltimately\, Never Be The Same is an album about steady evolution\, a suite of deeply considered\, carefully constructed songs rooted in lived experience.
