SUMMARY:Well-being:Medicine Needs Poetry: Reimagining Healthcare\, Healing & Human Connection
DESCRIPTION:Poetry is one of humankind's oldest forms of expression. Expressive writing is an evidence-based strategy for reducing burnout among healthcare workers\, and more broadly for making meaning of experiences that are complex\, uncertain\, and difficult to name. This\n interdisciplinary workshop explores poetry as a modality for improving individual health\, care systems\, and healing\, and explores how poetry invites reflection\, deepens attention\, and nurtures consideration of the full human experience within healthcare. Lead\n by Janna Lopez\, MFA\, Creighton University School of Medicine's Poet in Residence\, this workshop will ask participants to consider how poetic expression can support personal well-being\, strengthen relationships between patients and caregivers\, and contribute\n to more reflective\, compassionate\, and human-centered cultures of care. Participants will be introduced to\nPoetic Intelligence as a framework for cultivating powers of observation\, curiosity\, expression\, self-compassion\, and meaning-making.  Everyone is encouraged to attend - no prior creative writing or poetry experience is required. \n\n\n\nJanna Lopez\, MFA\, is the inaugural Poet-in-Residence at Creighton University School of Medicine\, and the first to hold such a position in the US.  She works with students\, healthcare professionals\, educators\, and healthcare teams to make poetry accessible\n as a tool for navigating complex human experiences. She is the author of Medicine Needs Poetry: An Open Invitation to Cultivate More Self-Care & Compassion Through Words. An award-winning writer\, educator\, and speaker\, Lopez previously served as a Santa\n Fe Poet Laureate. Her work advocates for the humanities as an essential component of health\, education\, and human connection.

DESCRIPTION:Experience a curated experience of the imaginary\, featuring a lightly sci-fi\, magnificent work of art--the LRCCS Fortune and Longevity Dragon\, a 25-ft long\, Asian-inspired full-body dragon sculpture for use in the traditional \"dragon dance\"  crafted by renowned international artist Zhen Guo with U-M faculty arts lecturer Raymond Wetzel\, artist Jeri Rosenberg\, students\,  and volunteers   The exhibition highlights the story of the dragon's fabrication and its impact on community..  An iconic symbol of inclusivity\, strength\, and courage\, this newly imagined U-M dragon\, with its futuristic flair\, technological creativity and sustainable materials\, invites students and the entire community to re-envision a classic cultural symbol for contemporary times.\n\nPresented by the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies. DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan.  Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.  \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space.  In patterns that support the artwork’s theme\, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Comics Beyond Sight
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

DESCRIPTION:Lila Kadaj received her MFA from Wayne State University. Her work has been shown at numerous institutions\, including the Detroit Institute of Arts\, the Cranbrook Art Museum\, and the Arab American National Museum.  She spent nearly 27 years teaching art at Detroit Public schools.\n\nArtist statement: “When looking at a beautiful flower.  It’s just itself.  Just there......no .....it does not proclaim its purpose for blooming is to make people happy. It just is. Like standing in front of an easel and painting........just is.......no matter......what proclamations may be concluded to sway the viewer. Same thing goes for fine art.  It’s not about I am a woman....it’s not about I am a first generation Arab American.....it’s not about being a child of trauma....it’s not about a member of my family being gunned down on the street....it’s about being born a painter.....standing in front of my easel and working to create a \"Piece of Fine Art\". Not standing on some soap box and expecting my words to somehow qualify my painting. It’s the painting\, drawing or sculpture that must speak on its own.......on how the artist......via the intellect and muse uses the elements to create something distinct and first rate.   It can be quiet or loud. I see so much very weak work uplifted not for its quality but because it’s in fashion.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Black Birth Joy
DESCRIPTION:Black Birth Joy by Tiana Lashae documents birth as a deeply personal story of connection\, courage\, tenderness\, and joy. The photographs and stories in the exhibit challenge mainstream narratives that reduce Black birth to statistics and only amplify Black pregnant women's anxiety and hesitancy about navigating the maternal health care system. Instead\, the exhibit offers evidence of joy\, reminders of possibility\, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard\, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers\, babies\, partners\, families\, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care\, respectful treatment\, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity\, dignity\, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae\, a doula and birth/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine\, an international publication. This exhibit features materials from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive\, as well as select items from the Art\, Architecture\, and Engineering Special Collections and the Transportation History Collection.\n\nAs America rang in a new decade in the 1920s\, cookbook authors and appliance manufacturers stood ready to offer the newly emancipated and forward-thinking American woman a vision for her future\, a vision that would be scientifically  grounded\, speedy enough to make time for leisure as well as housework\, and guaranteed to bring fun to that most humdrum of chores: planning and preparing meals for a family three times a day\, 365 days a year.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Like the Flowing River
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tomoyuki Ueno creates individual works and installations where nature appears to be in an endless conversation with form\, one echoing the other\, a repetition. They are a combination of certainty and ephemerality\, as if hinged between living and loss. The specificity of Ueno’s sculptural works reads like poetry. Ueno’s installation offers visitors time away\, for contemplation\, to draw inward\, to come inside\, to ask the question\, “How are art and the everyday intertwined?” Honoring the Buddhist philosophy of impermanence\, one becomes a continuation of the other. The artist intends the space to offer a restorative and meditative experience.\n\nThis exhibition includes artworks created from natural materials foraged by the artist while in artist residency in Ann Arbor.\n\n*The title refers to the opening line of Hōjōki\, written by 13th-century Japanese Buddhist monk Kamo no Chōmei: \"The flow of the river is ceaseless\, and the water is never the same…\"*

DESCRIPTION:Small Works\nPrints & Book Objects from Detroit 2020–2026\n\nOctober 27 - November 19 \nPublic Reception: Friday\, November 13 from 4:30-6pm.\n\nSmall Works was a print shop ran by Li Chen & Gerald Schulze\, in Detroit\, MI\, from 2020–2026. Mariana Matos joined as the studio assistant\, and later studio manager\, in 2024. Over those six years\, the business grew from an extension of their design practice to a community space that hosts more than 70 classes a year\, open studio for the public\, and year long funded fellowships that investigate practice in art and design related to the Book Arts. In 2026\, they decided to expand community programming\, and to accommodate this expansion closed Small Works\, and formed Center for the Book Arts Detroit (BAD) which operates in the same space.\n\nThis exhibition is a eulogy for the former Small Works shop\, and a celebration of all the people who made work here. It also serves to show what is possible as a community\, when they share space and create work together. \n\nThe work featured is a collection of things printed by Small Works\, by their studiomates Diskette Press\, the publisher Maamoul Press\, and by the community that uses the space.

SUMMARY:Community Service:Gift of Life Swab Week
DESCRIPTION:Gift of Life is a national bone marrow and stem cell registry that connects patients battling blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma with donors who can save their lives. Most patients don't have a match in their family\, so they rely on strangers joining the registry. Our University of Michigan chapter has added over 2\,700 Wolverines to the registry\, leading to 18 confirmed matches and 3 life-saving transplants. This fall's Swab Week runs November 2 to 6 on the Diag\, and this week we are going up against Ohio State in registrations. Joining takes about five minutes: fill out a quick form and swab your cheek. If you're between 18 and 35 and in good health\, stop by\, bring your friends\, and you could be the match that gives someone a second chance at life. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 3): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:\n\nFrom September 2025 through December 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Southeast Michigan-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)\nPhase 3 (September 11 - December 11) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)\nPhase 3 \n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Abhishek Narula (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Nathan Byrne (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtist Statements/Bios\n\nAbhishek Narula\, Compressions \nCompressions is an installation comprised of 416 industrial-grade zip ties\, cinched around the entry pillar of the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference\, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it\, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie\, typically used to hang and bind other material\, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation\, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility\, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell\, to slow down\, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist\, designer\, and educator who works across sculpture\, installation\, sound\, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions\, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry\, exploring themes of labor\, precarity\, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology\, Science Gallery Detroit\, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia\, New Media Caucus (NMC)\, WaveFarm\, The Boulder Public Library\, The Hyde Park Art Center\, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press\, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI)\, International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA)\, among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne\, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image / object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne\, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist’s interest in embodied experience of space\, archival and site responsiveness\, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty\, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist / educator / curator currently based in Detroit\, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects\, he reimagines\, and explores within frameworks such as language\, the passage of time\, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal\, transformative\, and emotive states through materiality\, process\, and placement\, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer’s encounters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lecturer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

DESCRIPTION:Searches for axion dark matter and gravitational waves are rapidly expanding\, with new experiments deploying quantum sensing techniques to reach unprecedented precision. But does one need to account for the quantum nature of the axion or GW itself? I will exhibit two severe obstructions. First\, realistic detectors cannot resolve the fundamental modes of a field\; instead they couple to coarse-grained \"effective\" modes\, which often washes out nonclassical effects. Second\, all nonclassical effects are suppressed by extra powers of the weak coupling\, making them much harder to detect than the waves themselves. This suppression applies to all observables\, including quadrature and number statistics\, entanglement\, and decoherence\, and rules out many proposed methods to detect the quantization of gravity.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Pious Politics: Cultural Foundations of the Islamist Movement in Turkey
DESCRIPTION:Respondent: Pauline Jones\, U-M\n\nWhat explains the rise and resilience of religious movements in historically secular contexts? Pious Politics (Cambridge University Press\, 2025) investigates this question through the case of Islamist mobilization in Turkey. Drawing on two years of archival research and ethnographic fieldwork in formal and clandestine religious networks in Turkey\, Ozgen shows that the Turkish Islamists captured the state by developing a popular\, well-organized movement that rallied the masses and built vigorous political parties. But an equally formative\, if not more significant\, factor was the cultural groundwork Islamists laid through a quiet\, gradual\, and remarkably robust model of mobilization. Leveraging this groundwork\, Islamists taught people to act politically in everyday life—situating personal choices about dress\, speech\, comportment\, and social relations against a particular sociopolitical worldview. This presentation introduces two interconnected projects that examine IPV through interdisciplinary perspectives\, including criminology\, sociology\, social work\, gender studies\, psychology\, family studies\, public health\, trauma studies\, and neuroscience.\n\nThe first project focuses on theory development through a cross-national\, multilevel examination of IPV victimization among women and men. It explores how broader structural conditions intersect with individual experiences to shape IPV risk. By integrating macro- and micro-level perspectives\, this work aims to advance a more comprehensive understanding of IPV across diverse global contexts.\n\nThe second project focuses on intervention development and survivor healing. It examines an integrative\, culturally responsive\, trauma-informed\, and mindfulness-based intervention for individuals with histories of IPV. Using a mixed-methods randomized controlled trial design\, the project assesses preliminary indicators of holistic well-being\, empowerment\, and stress regulation through surveys\, interviews\, and biomarkers.\n\nTogether\, these projects reflect an interdisciplinary research agenda that moves from understanding the multilevel determinants of IPV to developing culturally grounded\, trauma-informed\, mindfulness-based\, and neuroscience-informed approaches to survivor recovery. The presentation will discuss implications for theory development\, policy\, practice\, clinical intervention\, and global efforts to prevent IPV.\n\nBiography:\nCarrie K. W. Li\, PhD\, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at the University of Hong Kong and an International Visiting Faculty member at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Dr. Li is an interdisciplinary scholar whose research bridges criminology\, sociology\, social work\, psychology\, nursing\, and public health. She earned her PhD in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University\, her MSc in Crime Science from University College London\, and her BSc with Honours in Experimental Psychology from the University of Bristol. Dr. Li’s research has been supported by numerous competitive grants totaling more than USD 1.3 million. Her work has been published in leading peer-reviewed international journals\, including Journal of Interpersonal Violence\, Family Process\, Child Abuse & Neglect\, Journal of Family Violence\, Violence Against Women\, Victims & Offenders\, Deviant Behavior\, and Journal of Prevention and Health Promotion.

DESCRIPTION:This paper proposes a Reinforcement Learning (RL) approach to the optimal reinsurance problem\nwhen the insurer faces uncertainty about the insurance claim dynamics. To this end\, we first formulate\nan exploratory version of the problem as a relaxed stochastic control problem. Within a broad class of\nparametric retention functions and general risk loading functions\, we derive the closed-form equilibrium\npolicy under the continuous-time mean-variance criterion. This is achieved through a formal verification\ntheorem and solving classical solutions of a system of exploratory extended Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman\n(EEHJB) equations. We then establish a policy iteration theorem\, showing that starting from any timeand state-homogeneous policy\, policy iteration converges to the derived equilibrium policy. Next\, we\ndevelop a martingale orthogonality theorem\, which serves as the foundation of our RL algorithm. The\nalgorithm is evaluated through simulation studies and real data from the U.S. National Flood Insurance\nProgram. Results demonstrate that the RL approach effectively learns unknown claim distributions\,\ntracks unobserved changes in claim dynamics and produces higher insurer surplus trajectories than the\nmaximum likelihood estimation (MLE) approach while simultaneously exhibiting greater robustness to\nthe choice of training window.

DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. She is the author of A History of Half-Birds (Milkweed Editions\, 2024) and If I Call This Cave a Garden (YesYes Books\, forthcoming 2027).\n\nHer creative work is rooted in the precarious landscape of the Gulf Coast\, where her practice spans poetry\, sculpture\, painting\, film\, choreography\, and the tendons in between. Behind every object on a gallery wall is a chain of relationships\, decisions\, and logistics that rarely gets discussed in art school\, yet shapes the careers of artists and the afterlife of their work.\n\nIn this conversation\, artist Cosmo Whyte\, collector JoAnn Gonzalez Hickey\, and collection manager Elizabeth Tenenbaum pull back the curtain on that journey. Each brings a distinct vantage point: the artist who makes the work and sets its terms\, the collector who lives with it\, supports it\, and makes it available to the public\, and the manager who handles the practical details of cataloguing\, care\, documentation\, shipping\, and loan agreements that keep a collection in good order.\n\nWhether you’re a practicing artist navigating the collecting world\, a student artist looking at career paths ahead\, or an emerging collector\, join us for an insightful conversation with professionals to strengthen your roadmap. Registration requested.\n\nAbout the Speakers\n\nCosmo Whyte\nCosmo Whyte (b. 1982\, St. Andrew\, Jamaica) received a BFA from Bennington College\, a post-baccalaureate at Maryland Institute College of Art\, and a MFA from University of Michigan. In 2020 he had solo exhibitions at MOCA Georgia and ICA San Diego. Whyte has exhibited in biennial exhibitions including Prospect.5 New Orleans (2022) 13th Havana Biennial\, the Jamaica Biennial (2017)\, and the Atlanta Biennial (2016). His work has been included in exhibitions at Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; The High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA\; The Drawing Center\, New York\, NY\; The Somerset House\, London\, UK\; Museum of Latin American Art\, Los Angeles\, CA\; Atlanta Contemporary\, Atlanta\, GA\; Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France\; and the National Gallery of Jamaica\, Kingston\, Jamaica. His work is in public museum collections including the High Museum\, Atlanta\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; International African American Museum\, Charlotte\, NC\; Museum of Contemporary Art Georgia\; National Gallery of Jamaica\; and the Pérez Art Museum Miami. In 2022 he joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture as an assistant professor. Whyte lives and works in Los Angeles\, CA.\n\nJoAnn Gonzalez Hickey\nJoAnn Gonzalez Hickey has spent much of her adult life engaged in the visual arts as practitioner\, patron\, friend and advocate.\n\nUpon abandoning the art studio and any potential advancement as a young practicing artist\, her mentor and teacher wisely advised her to continue on by “enjoying an art experience every day.” Reading\, museums\, galleries\, studio visits\, board work and philanthropic engagements became the artistic playground where her eye and individual sensibilities continued to develop.\n\nA move to New York City in 2002 prompted JoAnn to think more formally about collecting. Certainly\, living in New York City\, a major international center for contemporary art\, offered opportunities for a direct and targeted exploration. She spent the next couple of years visiting private collections\, seeking perspective on the various approaches employed by collectors. During this period of time she realized her eye was most often drawn to works on paper. In 2005\, having gained clarity and vision\, she set out to formally build a collection focused entirely on unique contemporary abstract works on paper. In 2012 JoAnn created the Syzygy platform. Syzygy offers her collection for study by college and graduate academic institutions to engage in a multitude of interdisciplinary projects. \n\nJoAn was a speaker at the Vail Symposium\, “Art\, a Matter of Mind\,” in 2018 and has lectured at the University of Minnesota\, Colorado State University\, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA)\, and numerous other colleges and universities across the US. Internationally\, she participated in a panel on collecting at Vienna Art Week in Austria and featured in a video interview with Joana P.R. Neves\, a London-based independent curator and Artistic Director of the Drawing Now Art Fair.\n\nThe collection has expanded considerably over a 20 year history. It offers the fullest expression of what a drawing can be while articulating the range of language employed by individual artists. JoAnn Gonzalez Hickey believes there is value in connecting with the artist in order to gain an understanding of the underlying forces central to the artist’s work. \n\nJoAnn currently resides in the mountains of Colorado. When she isn’t looking at art\, her time is spent enjoying other cultural arts activities\, fly fishing and two young grandchildren. \n\nAbout the Collection \nThe JoAnn Gonzalez Hickey Collection is a significant collection of unique contemporary works on paper by over 450 early to mid-career contemporary artists from around the world. While the collection can largely be characterized as abstract\, there are exceptions yielding to figuration and the narrative. Paper is the essential element of the collection. Ms. Gonzalez Hickey established SYZYGY\, a curatorial and study platform to promote a deeper understanding of the nature of works on paper. \n\nElizabeth Tenenbaum\nElizabeth Tenenbaum is an art advisor\, private curator\, collection manager and a qualified accredited USPAP appraiser who lives in Brooklyn\, New York. Elizabeth is also the Director of Syzygy\, a curatorial study platform focused on unique contemporary works on paper. Elizabeth attended Syracuse University\, graduating with a BFA in 1998. She received her Certificate from NYU in Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts. Her career began at Art in General\, a nonprofit organization that assisted artists with the production and presentation of new work. She has been active in the New York City art world for over 25 years working with galleries\, assisting other artists in residency programs\, working as the art director for a nationwide publication and as the assistant director at an art foundation.\n\nIn 2013 she founded her art collection advisory and appraisal firm\, Art Wise\, Inc. She was a visiting critic in 2014 for ABUBUYA KM0 2014 an International Workshop involving visual artists\, cultural managers\, curators\, interacting with the moxeño community El Rosario in Beni – Bolivia\, accessible by the River Mamoré only\; in 2015 visiting critic at the Wassaic Project Residency in Amenia\, NY\; and in 2021 studio visits with NARS foundation residents. Her writing was published in the 2015 book Abubuya. She has presented and lectured about contemporary art collections to students in various Masters of Fine Arts Programs including: Sotheby’s Institute\, New York\; School of Visual Arts\; New York\, University of San Francisco\, CA\; Colorado State University\, Ft. Collins\, CO\; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art\, Philadelphia\; and University of Minnesota\, Minneapolis\, MN. She lectures annually at Artist in the Marketplace\, at the Bronx Museum of Art.

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the opening of Tomoyuki Ueno's exhibition *Like the Flowing River*\, featuring a conversation between Ueno and curator Amanda Krugliak. Light refreshments will be served.\n\nAbout the exhibition: Artist Tomoyuki Ueno creates individual works and installations where nature appears to be in an endless conversation with form\, one echoing the other\, a repetition. They are a combination of certainty and ephemerality\, as if hinged between living and loss. The specificity of Ueno’s sculptural works reads like poetry. Ueno’s installation offers visitors time away\, for contemplation\, to draw inward\, to come inside\, to ask the question\, “How are art and the everyday intertwined?” Honoring the Buddhist philosophy of impermanence\, one becomes a continuation of the other. The artist intends the space to offer a restorative and meditative experience.\n\nThis exhibition includes artworks created from natural materials foraged by the artist while in artist residency in Ann Arbor.\n\n*The title refers to the opening line of Hōjōki\, written by 13th-century Japanese Buddhist monk Kamo no Chōmei: \"The flow of the river is ceaseless\, and the water is never the same…\"*

If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past.
