Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. The Art of Memory, Paintings by Felix Lembersky", "event_subtitle":"", "event_type":"Exhibition", "event_type_id":"7", "description":"Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter, theater stage designer, teacher, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons, these paintings, along with his later nonconformist work, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars, the 1917 revolution, and political terror, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable, neglected, and marginalized people: children, the elderly, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy, dignity, and admiration. \n\n\u201cFor my father, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them, name potential barriers to intervention, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Studios, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator, MFA \u201920) and Abhishek Narula (MFA \u201920); and Sometimes Space, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I, MFA \u201921). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions, performances, and events, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project, Byrne, Clegg, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response, they\u2019ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA \u201923) and Erin McKenna (MFA \u201920)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA \u201920) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA \u201920)\nPhase 3 (September 11 - December 11) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA \u201920) and Nathan Byrne (MFA \u201921)\nPhase 3 \n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Abhishek Narula (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Nathan Byrne (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtist Statements\/Bios\n\nAbhishek Narula, Compressions \nCompressions is an installation comprised of 416 industrial-grade zip ties, cinched around the entry pillar of the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie, typically used to hang and bind other material, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell, to slow down, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist, designer, and educator who works across sculpture, installation, sound, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry, exploring themes of labor, precarity, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS\/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology, Science Gallery Detroit, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia, New Media Caucus (NMC), WaveFarm, The Boulder Public Library, The Hyde Park Art Center, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI), International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA), among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website \/ Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image \/ object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist\u2019s interest in embodied experience of space, archival and site responsiveness, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist \/ educator \/ curator currently based in Detroit, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects, he reimagines, and explores within frameworks such as language, the passage of time, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal, transformative, and emotive states through materiality, process, and placement, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer\u2019s encounters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lecturer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. This talk reevaluates the history of Japanese food culture by examining how ideas of healthy eating became both a popular phenomenon and a matter of grave concern among trained medical experts and amateur culinary enthusiasts alike. It explores why ordinary people ate what they did, how these ideas on proper eating came to be, and what social, economic, and moral concerns propelled their rise. Guidance on dietetics conveyed priorities about how well-nourished bodies were meant to act in the world, whether as agricultural workers, samurai bureaucrats, or merchant consumers. Failure to keep a proper diet carried life-or-death consequences, according to these guides, that could bring not just disease to oneself but financial and moral ruin to one\u2019s household, domain, or even society at large. This study of historical nourishment modes in Japan thus reveals an early modern dietetic revolution in the making, which disrupted older forms of expertise and provided a venue to critique official policies on eating and living right before the introduction of modern scientific nutrition.\n\nJoshua Schlachet is a historian of Japan, specializing in the cultural history of nourishment in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. His new book, *Nourishing Life: Cultures of Food and Health in Early Modern Japan* (University of Hawai\u02bbi Press, 2026), examines how the emergence of a dietary common knowledge expanded concepts of a well-nourished body to encompass economic productivity, status hierarchy, and moral cultivation. Schlachet is co-editor of *Interdisciplinary Edo: Towards an Integrated Approach to Early Modern Japan* (Routledge, 2024), a collected volume of innovative humanistic research on society and culture in the Tokugawa era. Nonetheless, MaOPs remain a particularly difficult and understudied problem class owing to challenges in both scalably generating solutions (in the form of a Pareto frontier) and interpreting the solutions we do get. This talk begins by providing a tutorial overview of methods commonly used to generate Pareto frontiers for multi-objective (defined as two or more objectives) optimization problems, alongside a discussion of why these approaches tend not to scale well when increasing the number of objectives. Then, I present the Objective Reduction Community Algorithm (ORCA), our group\u2019s novel approach for reducing the objective dimensionality of MaOP\u2019s to a manageable two or three a priori to solving the problem. At a high level, this approach identifies which objectives are likely to be pointing to similar decisions, embeds this information into a graph, and uses community detection to partition this graph to give groupings of objectives which are correlated within groups, but competing between groups. Three case studies are presented which demonstrate the power and efficacy of this approach for sustainable decision making. In the first, the correlation of planetary boundary objectives within a large scale sustainable fuel supply chain is assessed. The second case study considers changes in objective correlation due to intermittency in objective parameters, and assesses the correlation between cost and emissions driven industrial demand response for two different electrified chemical processes. The third case study utilizes an extension of ORCA to nonlinear MaOP\u2019s, showcasing its utility on a commonly used set of benchmark problems with known objective correlations, the DZLT5 problems, as well as on a design problem for a carbon capture, utilization, and storage network. I conclude by providing some perspective on future applications of our approach to problems of distributed model predictive control and aligned agentic AI systems.\n\nBiography:\nAndrew Allman is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan, and has been in this position since fall 2020. Andrew is an alumnus of the University of Minnesota Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, where he obtained his Ph.D. with Prodromos Daoutidis in 2018 and subsequently worked in a post-doctoral position with Qi Zhang from graduation until joining Michigan. His awards include receiving the NSF CAREER Award in 2023, and the CAST Director\u2019s Student Presentation Award in 2018. She recently completed both a postdoctoral fellowship at Georgetown Law's Institute for Technology Law & Policy, where she worked on the Redesigning the Governance Stack Project, and a Master's in Library and Information Science from The Catholic University of America. She received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.\n\nNgozi Harrison is a Ph.D. Student at the University of California, Los Angeles, in Information Studies, whose research primarily investigates the relationship between machine learning, quantitative and computational methods, and society. His work critiques algorithmic culture and computational reason and sits at the intersection of Black Studies, Critical Quantitative and Computational Methods, and Critical Information Studies. He is currently working on his dissertation proposal, which critically examines the underlying values, norms, and assumptions of machine learning practice to develop new frameworks for liberatory technical practice and justice-oriented technologies.\n\nDJ is an interdisciplinary scholar of race, technology, and learning and an Assistant Professor of Computing at Chicago State University. She particularly examines how and if researchers, educators, and technologists might use and create technologies toward liberatory learning and living. DJ (Stephanie T. Jones) earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science and Learning Sciences and an M.S. in Computer Science from Northwestern University. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment, communication, and boundary setting.
