DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Special Exhibition | Ancient Abstractions: Roman Visual Trends Beyond Naturalism
DESCRIPTION:The lifelike naturalistic bodies of Greek and Roman sculpture have been a source of wonder since the Renaissance. Indeed\, the Italian Renaissance artist Vasari identified the ancient world as the time “when sculpture rose to its greatest height.” But close likenesses of the natural world are not the only visual products of the ancient past. This exhibition traces alternative visual trends in the ancient Roman world that today would be considered examples of abstraction. It focuses on monuments and motifs long pushed to the margins of our accounts of ancient art. Oversize arrangements of interlocking shapes pulsate in bold block colors from tombs\, temples\, and homes\; stylized animals flicker into view\, only to collapse once more into bright geometric arrangements\; and artists adopt experimental shorthands for the depiction of space across media. Anticipating recent interests in color and form\, the visual trends of antiquity emerge as far more varied than has long been told.\n\n*Ancient Abstractions is on view from November 5\, 2026\, through February 28\, 2027\, during regular museum hours (Tuesday–Friday\, 10:00 AM–4:00 PM\, and Saturday–Sunday\, 11:00 AM–4:00 PM\; closed Mondays and university holidays.*

DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. DESCRIPTION:Following his UMS debut last season alongside the Imani Winds\, composer and percussionist Andy Akiho returns with his steelpan and the Brooklyn-based ensemble Sandbox Percussion\, a quartet that came together in 2011 because of their interest in expanding the percussion repertoire.\n\nThis exhilarating ensemble champions living composers through an unwavering dedication to contemporary chamber music and has established a wider audience for classical music through collaborations with leading composers and artists.\n\nFor their UMS debut\, they’ll perform works by Andy Akiho from their many collaborations\, dating back 15 years to when Akiho and Sandbox member Ian Rosenbaum met in graduate school. If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment\, communication\, and boundary setting. However\, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming\, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”\nOur workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles\, including time for self-reflection\, small group sharing\, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive. \n“Can I request accommodations?”\nWe considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However\, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. DESCRIPTION:New Music!\n\nJoshua Radin emerged in 2004 as an empathetic\, engaging\, and often enthralling troubadour. Over the years\, he’s tallied north of 1 billion streams\, moved 1 million-plus albums worldwide\, and scored a gold certification for the single “I’d Rather Be With You.” His music has appeared in over 200 films\, television series\, and commercials. In addition to multiple showstopping appearances on Ellen (who also enlisted him to perform at her wedding) and Today Show\, and performances on The Tonight Show\, Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!\, and Conan\, he contributed “Brand New Day” to a commercial in support of the troops at the request of First Ladies Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden. He’s played to sold out crowds around the globe and shared the stage with the likes of Ed Sheeran\, Sara Bareilles\, Ingrid Michaelson\, Sheryl Crow\, Tori Amos and more. Not to mention\, he’s a staunch philanthropist who supports Little Kids Rock and North Shore Animal League America (NSALA)\, among others. Thus far his catalog consists of nine full-length offerings highlighted by fan favorites such as We Were Here\, Simple Times\, Underwater\, Wax Wings\, and Here\, Right Now.\n \nFollowing the release of his 2021 acclaimed album The Ghost and The Wall\, Joshua left his material existence in the rearview\, grabbed a backpack\, packed his guitar\, picked up a pen and a pad\, hit the road in search of new stories to tell.
