The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration. \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. The photographs and stories in the exhibit challenge mainstream narratives that reduce Black birth to statistics and only amplify Black pregnant women's anxiety and hesitancy about navigating the maternal health care system. Instead\, the exhibit offers evidence of joy\, reminders of possibility\, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard\, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers\, babies\, partners\, families\, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care\, respectful treatment\, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity\, dignity\, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae\, a doula and birth/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine\, an international publication. Mariana Matos joined as the studio assistant\, and later studio manager\, in 2024. Over those six years\, the business grew from an extension of their design practice to a community space that hosts more than 70 classes a year\, open studio for the public\, and year long funded fellowships that investigate practice in art and design related to the Book Arts. In 2026\, they decided to expand community programming\, and to accommodate this expansion closed Small Works\, and formed Center for the Book Arts Detroit (BAD) which operates in the same space.\n\nThis exhibition is a eulogy for the former Small Works shop\, and a celebration of all the people who made work here. This exhibition traces alternative visual trends in the ancient Roman world that today would be considered examples of abstraction. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session.\n\nAbout this talk:\nThis lecture presents the early stages of a new research project on the role of animals in prison memoirs from Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Rather than offering definitive conclusions\, the talk will outline a preliminary research agenda and explore how encounters with animals may have shaped experiences of captivity\, survival\, and humanity within carceral systems. I begin with a contemporary example from the United States\, where incarcerated individuals in prison dog-training programs prepare service animals for people with disabilities\, creating an unexpected relationship between imprisonment\, care\, rehabilitation\, and the human–animal bond.\n\nThe lecture then places this phenomenon in historical perspective by examining memoirs and oral histories of political prisoners\, Gulag survivors\, and dissidents from Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. My goal is to identify recurring patterns and raise questions rather than present a finished interpretation. In these accounts\, animals emerge as companions\, witnesses\, sources of comfort\, reminders of life beyond prison walls\, and reflections of prisoners' own vulnerability\, while also occupying roles within systems of labor\, deprivation\, violence\, and survival. It tells the story of “sundown towns” where residents drove out or actively excluded specific groups from residing there (from being in a town after sunset) through ordinances\, signs\, and acts of violence. Sundown towns excluded Black people\, and in some cases\, Chinese Americans\, Jewish people\, Native Americans\, Latinas/os and other racialized groups. Since the 19th century these towns have been prevalent throughout the U.S. and especially in the Midwest\, West\, and East.\n\nThese policies did not completely disappear over time. The attitudes that drove them morphed into housing “covenants\,” redlining\, discrimination within the post-war FHA and discrimination in the granting of bank loans. The results of these decisions and policies haunt our country to this very day. *Don’t Let the Sun* will shine a light on this difficult chapter in America’s ever-expanding history\, and help audiences engage productively with “hard” histories.\n\nMr. Loewen’s *Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism* is the definitive history of these phenomena. Another source is the “History and Social Justice” website launched by Dr. Loewen\, which has had nearly one million visitors over the last three years\, and continues to amass cases and first-hand accounts. Many of his works address social issues\, including vocal works like *American Journal* (Robert Hayden) and *A Georgia Song* (Maya Angelou)\; and orchestral works like his Violin Concerto *“Katrina”\; Wind of Many Voices*\, responding to the troubled history of South Dakota\; and a second Violin Concerto *“on the brink”* exploring climate grief and climate action. \n\nRICHARD WESLEY is a playwright and screenwriter whose many plays deal with social-historical moments.
