The Art of Memory, Paintings by Felix Lembersky", "event_subtitle":"", "event_type":"Exhibition", "event_type_id":"7", "description":"Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter, theater stage designer, teacher, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons, these paintings, along with his later nonconformist work, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars, the 1917 revolution, and political terror, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable, neglected, and marginalized people: children, the elderly, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy, dignity, and admiration. \n\n\u201cFor my father, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session.\n\nAbout this talk:\nThis lecture presents the early stages of a new research project on the role of animals in prison memoirs from Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Rather than offering definitive conclusions, the talk will outline a preliminary research agenda and explore how encounters with animals may have shaped experiences of captivity, survival, and humanity within carceral systems. I begin with a contemporary example from the United States, where incarcerated individuals in prison dog-training programs prepare service animals for people with disabilities, creating an unexpected relationship between imprisonment, care, rehabilitation, and the human\u2013animal bond.\n\nThe lecture then places this phenomenon in historical perspective by examining memoirs and oral histories of political prisoners, Gulag survivors, and dissidents from Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. My goal is to identify recurring patterns and raise questions rather than present a finished interpretation. In these accounts, animals emerge as companions, witnesses, sources of comfort, reminders of life beyond prison walls, and reflections of prisoners' own vulnerability, while also occupying roles within systems of labor, deprivation, violence, and survival. It tells the story of \u201csundown towns\u201d where residents drove out or actively excluded specific groups from residing there (from being in a town after sunset) through ordinances, signs, and acts of violence. Sundown towns excluded Black people, and in some cases, Chinese Americans, Jewish people, Native Americans, Latinas\/os and other racialized groups. Since the 19th century these towns have been prevalent throughout the U.S. and especially in the Midwest, West, and East.\n\nThese policies did not completely disappear over time. The attitudes that drove them morphed into housing \u201ccovenants,\u201d redlining, discrimination within the post-war FHA and discrimination in the granting of bank loans. The results of these decisions and policies haunt our country to this very day. *Don\u2019t Let the Sun* will shine a light on this difficult chapter in America\u2019s ever-expanding history, and help audiences engage productively with \u201chard\u201d histories.\n\nMr. Loewen\u2019s *Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism* is the definitive history of these phenomena. Another source is the \u201cHistory and Social Justice\u201d website launched by Dr. Loewen, which has had nearly one million visitors over the last three years, and continues to amass cases and first-hand accounts. Librettist Richard Wesley\u2019s text is inspired by the voices of individuals impacted by sundown towns and more recent policies, examining the harm experienced by both the excluded and the excluders; and recent efforts by many sundown towns to reckon with their past and shape a better future.\n\nABOUT THE GUEST ARTISTS\n\nTHEODORE WIPRUD is a composer, an educator, and a researcher on the musical community\u2019s work toward equity and inclusion. Many of his works address social issues, including vocal works like *American Journal* (Robert Hayden) and *A Georgia Song* (Maya Angelou); and orchestral works like his Violin Concerto *\u201cKatrina\u201d; Wind of Many Voices*, responding to the troubled history of South Dakota; and a second Violin Concerto *\u201con the brink\u201d* exploring climate grief and climate action. \n\nRICHARD WESLEY is a playwright and screenwriter whose many plays deal with social-historical moments.
