The Art of Memory, Paintings by Felix Lembersky", "event_subtitle":"", "event_type":"Exhibition", "event_type_id":"7", "description":"Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter, theater stage designer, teacher, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons, these paintings, along with his later nonconformist work, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars, the 1917 revolution, and political terror, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable, neglected, and marginalized people: children, the elderly, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy, dignity, and admiration. \n\n\u201cFor my father, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie, typically used to hang and bind other material, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell, to slow down, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist, designer, and educator who works across sculpture, installation, sound, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry, exploring themes of labor, precarity, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS\/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology, Science Gallery Detroit, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia, New Media Caucus (NMC), WaveFarm, The Boulder Public Library, The Hyde Park Art Center, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI), International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA), among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website \/ Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image \/ object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist\u2019s interest in embodied experience of space, archival and site responsiveness, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist \/ educator \/ curator currently based in Detroit, MI. Through spatial and archive-responsive projects, he reimagines, and explores within frameworks such as language, the passage of time, and contemplation. The launch began the spacecraft\u2019s 2.2 billion mile journey to the asteroid 16 Psyche in the outer part of the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The Psyche asteroid, composed of over 50% metal by weight is possibly the metal core of a planetesimal whose formation was interrupted early in the solar system by collisions with other bodies that created the asteroid belt. The Psyche spacecraft is a hybrid. Maxar\/Intuitive-Machines, now known for taking photographs from space over Ukraine, fabricated the spacecraft bus based on heritage hardware, and JPL installed scientific payload, avionics and autonomous flight software for deep space operation. This $900M NASA mission is the first spacecraft to use Hall thrusters in deep space to rendezvous and orbit the asteroid, and recently completed a Mars Gravity Assist on the way to rendezvous in 2029. A 2-year science program will determine the asteroid\u2019s composition and remnant magnetic field to determine if this unique object really is a planetary core\u2026and what that actually looks like. The talk will describe the Psyche mission and provides updates on electric propulsion at JPL.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Dan M. Goebel received a B.S. in physics in 1977, an M.S. in EE in 1978, and a Ph.D. in applied plasma physics in 1981 from UCLA. He is a Fellow and Senior Research Scientist at JPL and an Adjunct Professor of Aerospace Engineering at UCLA. At JPL he is the Chief Engineer of the Psyche Mission and responsible for the development of advanced spacecraft technologies. Dr. Goebel is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Inventors, and Fellow of the AIAA, IEEE, and APS. The existing literature typically focuses on constructing equilibria with a PDE approach, which requires certain Markovian structures. We characterize all equilibria through a coupled system of forward-backward SDEs. In particular, when the time duration is small, we show that the FBSDE is well-posed, and therefore the game has a unique equilibrium. Moreover, this unique equilibrium may be non-Markovian and thus not attainable via the PDE approach. We next study the set value of the game, which roughly speaking is the set of insider's values over all equilibria and thus is by nature unique. Finally, we characterize the set value through a level set of a certain standard HJB equation.\nIn the second part of the talk, we apply the new approach to the Kyle-Back model with dynamic legal risk and large numbers of noise traders. In this setting, the insider chooses a strategy that conceals his identity within a large volume of surrounding trades and concentrates on medium-sized trades. We establish an intensity-based mathematical framework for explaining the interconnections between insider trading and stealth trading. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations.
