DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan.  Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.  \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space.  In patterns that support the artwork’s theme\, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Comics Beyond Sight
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

DESCRIPTION:Experience a curated experience of the imaginary\, featuring a lightly sci-fi\, magnificent work of art--the LRCCS Fortune and Longevity Dragon\, a 25-ft long\, Asian-inspired full-body dragon sculpture for use in the traditional \"dragon dance\"  crafted by renowned international artist Zhen Guo with U-M faculty arts lecturer Raymond Wetzel\, artist Jeri Rosenberg\, students\,  and volunteers   The exhibition highlights the story of the dragon's fabrication and its impact on community..  An iconic symbol of inclusivity\, strength\, and courage\, this newly imagined U-M dragon\, with its futuristic flair\, technological creativity and sustainable materials\, invites students and the entire community to re-envision a classic cultural symbol for contemporary times.\n\nPresented by the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies. DESCRIPTION:Lila Kadaj received her MFA from Wayne State University. Her work has been shown at numerous institutions\, including the Detroit Institute of Arts\, the Cranbrook Art Museum\, and the Arab American National Museum.  She spent nearly 27 years teaching art at Detroit Public schools.\n\nArtist statement: “When looking at a beautiful flower.  It’s just itself.  Just there......no .....it does not proclaim its purpose for blooming is to make people happy. It just is. Like standing in front of an easel and painting........just is.......no matter......what proclamations may be concluded to sway the viewer. Same thing goes for fine art.  It’s not about I am a woman....it’s not about I am a first generation Arab American.....it’s not about being a child of trauma....it’s not about a member of my family being gunned down on the street....it’s about being born a painter.....standing in front of my easel and working to create a \"Piece of Fine Art\". Not standing on some soap box and expecting my words to somehow qualify my painting. It’s the painting\, drawing or sculpture that must speak on its own.......on how the artist......via the intellect and muse uses the elements to create something distinct and first rate.   It can be quiet or loud. I see so much very weak work uplifted not for its quality but because it’s in fashion.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Black Birth Joy
DESCRIPTION:Black Birth Joy by Tiana Lashae documents birth as a deeply personal story of connection\, courage\, tenderness\, and joy. The photographs and stories in the exhibit challenge mainstream narratives that reduce Black birth to statistics and only amplify Black pregnant women's anxiety and hesitancy about navigating the maternal health care system. Instead\, the exhibit offers evidence of joy\, reminders of possibility\, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard\, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers\, babies\, partners\, families\, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care\, respectful treatment\, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity\, dignity\, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae\, a doula and birth/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine\, an international publication. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Like the Flowing River
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tomoyuki Ueno creates individual works and installations where nature appears to be in an endless conversation with form\, one echoing the other\, a repetition. They are a combination of certainty and ephemerality\, as if hinged between living and loss. The specificity of Ueno’s sculptural works reads like poetry. Ueno’s installation offers visitors time away\, for contemplation\, to draw inward\, to come inside\, to ask the question\, “How are art and the everyday intertwined?” Honoring the Buddhist philosophy of impermanence\, one becomes a continuation of the other. The artist intends the space to offer a restorative and meditative experience.\n\nThis exhibition includes artworks created from natural materials foraged by the artist while in artist residency in Ann Arbor.\n\n*The title refers to the opening line of Hōjōki\, written by 13th-century Japanese Buddhist monk Kamo no Chōmei: \"The flow of the river is ceaseless\, and the water is never the same…\"*

DESCRIPTION:Sign up for a two-hour work session\, with a hot lunch with colleagues! The Faculty On-Campus Work Retreats provide a quiet space to work with other scholars and artists\, and an opportunity for you to prioritize your research and creative work by committing to one or two work sessions before teaching\, service\, and email take over the semester. There are both morning and afternoon sessions available. Morning sessions also offer the option of coming early to enjoy an extended three-hour session. Breakfast snacks\, coffee\, and tea will be provided.During the lunch provided at each work session\, there will be a chance to share interests and work with other colleagues\, to learn about each others’ research\, to grow professional and social networks\, and to experience the University as a collective.The Work Retreats are open to all ~7\,800 members of the Faculty Senate\, including tenure-track professors\, lecturers\, research faculty\, clinical faculty\, librarians\, archivists\, and curators. DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. The Program Manager will communicate with students requesting exemptions via email and/or meet with students via zoom meetings to discuss their need for exemptions and provide any relevant and necessary resources.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 3): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:\n\nFrom September 2025 through December 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Southeast Michigan-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)\nPhase 3 (September 11 - December 11) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)\nPhase 3 \n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Abhishek Narula (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Nathan Byrne (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtist Statements/Bios\n\nAbhishek Narula\, Compressions \nCompressions is an installation comprised of 416 industrial-grade zip ties\, cinched around the entry pillar of the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference\, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it\, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie\, typically used to hang and bind other material\, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation\, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility\, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell\, to slow down\, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist\, designer\, and educator who works across sculpture\, installation\, sound\, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions\, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry\, exploring themes of labor\, precarity\, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology\, Science Gallery Detroit\, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia\, New Media Caucus (NMC)\, WaveFarm\, The Boulder Public Library\, The Hyde Park Art Center\, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press\, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI)\, International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA)\, among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne\, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image / object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne\, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist’s interest in embodied experience of space\, archival and site responsiveness\, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty\, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist / educator / curator currently based in Detroit\, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects\, he reimagines\, and explores within frameworks such as language\, the passage of time\, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal\, transformative\, and emotive states through materiality\, process\, and placement\, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer’s encounters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lecturer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. He has been awarded numerous artist residencies including Anderson Ranch Arts Center\, I-Park\, KHN Center for the Arts\, Prairie Ronde\, Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program\, and Rockland Woods. DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

DESCRIPTION:CID Speaker Series\n\nJoin the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host S. Michael Gaddis\, clinical associate professor of management and policy in Georgia State University’s Andrew Young School of Policy Studies.\n\nAbstract: Intersectionality theory argues that race and gender cannot be fully understood in isolation or through an additive approach. This study introduces a systematically comparative framework for identifying missing results in correspondence audits and helping scholars conduct more holistic analyses. Drawing on 52 correspondence audits encompassing nearly 330\,000 tests\, it identifies patterns that can be missed when racial and gender discrimination are analyzed separately rather than through an intersectional framework\, and offers best-practice recommendations for designing\, analyzing\, and citing correspondence audits.\n\nGaddis is a methodologist with expertise in survey and experimental design whose research advances understanding of inequality and discrimination across multiple dimensions.

However\, current modeling approaches often fail to capture the physical\, behavioral\, and systemic diversity required for effective localized planning and decision-making.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present integrated frameworks that combine bottom-up physics-based modeling with AI-driven analytics for characterizing urban energy systems. I will first show how the URBANopt platform has developed capabilities that enable coordinated analysis and co-design across buildings\, DERs\, and the grid. I will then discuss an AI-driven capabilities that automates input generation and supports dynamic scenario exploration.\n\nThese capabilities transform urban energy system planning by reducing the labor required for model generation\, scaling scenario exploration\, and improving accuracy for localized analysis. Together\, they form a scalable and adaptable framework that provides stakeholders with actionable insights for planning reliable and efficient energy transitions.\n\nBiography:\nDr. Rawad El Kontar is a Senior Research Engineer at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR). He is the lead developer of URBANopt\, DOE’s open-source urban energy modeling platform\, and the creator of the Urban Systems Generator\, an AI-driven framework that automates building-level data completion and scenario generation for city-scale energy modeling. With a multidisciplinary background spanning architecture\, building science\, and data science\, Rawad develops analytics and software platforms that integrate machine learning\, AI\, and energy simulation to accelerate the co-design and optimization of buildings\, distributed energy resources (DERs)\, and grid systems. SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Cutting Through Time: Folk Heritage and Socialist Vision in Chinese Papercuts
DESCRIPTION:Deeply woven into the fabric of daily life\, Chinese papercuts (jiǎnzhǐ 剪紙) have long marked domestic spaces and life-cycle rituals. This exhibit showcases the rich tapestry of regional styles\, distinct cutting techniques\, and enduring motifs preserved across generations. Drawn from several significant donations to the Asia Library\, alongside our rich print collection on Chinese paper arts\, we'll highlight both rare original artworks and publications that provide context for them.\n\nBeyond traditional themes\, our collections also reveal how papercutting transformed into a medium of political and social mobilization throughout the twentieth century. In the 1940s\, artists at the revolutionary base in Yan’an adapted local paper arts to convey socialist ideals. Following the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949\, more and more art schools\, local workshops\, and professional artists were involved in the creation of papercuts\, depicting collective labor\, communist ideology\, and industrial progress. During the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976)\, new papercuts largely illustrated political campaigns and eulogized party leaders. By the reform era of the 1980s\, papercuts entered global markets as exported handicrafts and cultural ambassadors\, marking yet another reinvention of a timeless folk tradition.\n\nIn 2009\, Chinese papercutting was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity\, honoring centuries of technical virtuosity and communal creativity across China’s diverse regions and ethnic groups. \n\nThird Thursdays at the Library is a themed monthly open house where we share materials from our collections. A lifelong advocate for the arts\, he has championed the integration of museum-quality contemporary art into the built environment while building one of the country’s leading private collections. If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past.
