SUMMARY:Exhibition:Comics Beyond Sight
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 3): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:\n\nFrom September 2025 through December 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Southeast Michigan-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)\nPhase 3 (September 11 - December 11) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)\nPhase 3 \n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Abhishek Narula (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Nathan Byrne (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtist Statements/Bios\n\nAbhishek Narula\, Compressions \nCompressions is an installation comprised of 416 industrial-grade zip ties\, cinched around the entry pillar of the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference\, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it\, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie\, typically used to hang and bind other material\, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation\, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility\, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell\, to slow down\, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist\, designer\, and educator who works across sculpture\, installation\, sound\, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions\, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry\, exploring themes of labor\, precarity\, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology\, Science Gallery Detroit\, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia\, New Media Caucus (NMC)\, WaveFarm\, The Boulder Public Library\, The Hyde Park Art Center\, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press\, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI)\, International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA)\, among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne\, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image / object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne\, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist’s interest in embodied experience of space\, archival and site responsiveness\, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty\, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist / educator / curator currently based in Detroit\, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects\, he reimagines\, and explores within frameworks such as language\, the passage of time\, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal\, transformative\, and emotive states through materiality\, process\, and placement\, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer’s encounters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lecturer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. He has been awarded numerous artist residencies including Anderson Ranch Arts Center\, I-Park\, KHN Center for the Arts\, Prairie Ronde\, Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program\, and Rockland Woods. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Special Exhibition | Ancient Abstractions: Roman Visual Trends Beyond Naturalism
DESCRIPTION:The lifelike naturalistic bodies of Greek and Roman sculpture have been a source of wonder since the Renaissance. Indeed\, the Italian Renaissance artist Vasari identified the ancient world as the time “when sculpture rose to its greatest height.” But close likenesses of the natural world are not the only visual products of the ancient past. This exhibition traces alternative visual trends in the ancient Roman world that today would be considered examples of abstraction. It focuses on monuments and motifs long pushed to the margins of our accounts of ancient art. Oversize arrangements of interlocking shapes pulsate in bold block colors from tombs\, temples\, and homes\; stylized animals flicker into view\, only to collapse once more into bright geometric arrangements\; and artists adopt experimental shorthands for the depiction of space across media. DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed Telegraph Quartet\, now in residency at the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, performs a recital. The program highlights music shaped by the idea of revisitation – it includes George Rochberg’s String Quintet (performed with cellist Norman Fischer)\; Franz Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 76\, No. 2 “Quinten”\; and Osvaldo Golijov’s *Ever Yours*\, a string octet performed with Fischer\, violist Matt Albert\, and violinists River Sawchyn and Aidan Krieger. Composed in different eras\, these works by Rochberg\, Haydn\, and Golijov each center on the idea of returning to something: musical ideas embraced before or the meanings behind emotions that influence the composers’ work.\n\nInitially known for his use of serialism – an approach to composing that focuses on creating sequences using pitches\, rhythms\, dynamics\, or other musical elements – Rochberg turned to writing music with a more melodic style after the death of his son in 1964. Rochberg claimed he couldn’t fully express his grief in music that used serialism’s pattern-focused approach. His 1982 String Quintet reflects Rochberg returns to the familiarity of more traditional melodic expression\, and though critics thought it was a creative regression\, the music still conveys what Rochberg viewed as an expanded emotional range.\n\nHaydn’s String Quartet Op. 76\, No. 2 “Quinten” bucked the composer’s trend of composing grand\, bright\, vibrant music and is instead written almost entirely in D minor\, which is often described as the saddest and most melancholy of all keys. The piece is nicknamed “Quinten\,” meaning fifths\, because of Haydn’s frequent use of this foundational interval between notes. Composed when he was in his 60s\, after a lifetime of writing some of the most sophisticated\, expressive\, and innovative works of his time\, this quartet showcases Haydn’s ability to create impressive work even with the most basic elements.\n\nAfter being asked to compose an octet for the Amsterdam String Quartet Biennale\, Osvaldo Golijov re-read letters Vincent Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. The small but consistent detail of Van Gogh’s letters closing with “ever yours” prompted Golijov to reflect on the enduring bonds between himself\, the St. Lawrence Quartet\, and their late first violinist\, co-founder\, and force of nature\, Geoff Nuttall\, to whom the octet is dedicated. At the time\, Nuttall was battling pancreatic cancer\, which would ultimately take his life. In thinking about Nuttall\, Golijov came to consider the idea of Van Gogh’s “ever yours” mentality and how attention can connect to love. Through that attention-minded lens\, Golijov saw a bond between Nuttall\, Van Gogh\, and Haydn\, a composer of whom Nuttall was especially fond\, ultimately connecting the three across time and creative spaces. \n\nThe Telegraph Quartet was truly honored to work with Nuttall\, the St. Lawrence Quartet\, and Golijov in the actual formation of the work. Golijov composed the music almost before the ensemble’s very ears\, using the instrumentation of the octet and aesthetic feedback from the Telegraph’s players to stimulate his own creative process. The work was dedicated to Nuttall\, who\, along with the St. Lawrence and Telegraph Quartets\, premiered the work at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.\n\nABOUT TELEGRAPH QUARTET\nErin Chin & Joseph Maile\, violins\nPei-Ling Lin\, viola\nJeremiah Shaw\, cello\n\nThe TELEGRAPH QUARTET formed in 2013 with an equal passion for standard and contemporary chamber music repertoire. Described by the *San Francisco Chronicle* as “…an incredibly valuable addition to the cultural landscape” and “powerfully adept… with a combination of brilliance and subtlety\,” the Telegraph Quartet was awarded the prestigious 2016 Walter W. Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Grand Prize at the 2014 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. The quartet is currently the quartet-in-residence at the University of Michigan.\n\nThe quartet has performed in New York City’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center\, San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre\, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s *Chamber Masters Series*\, and at festivals including the Chautauqua Institute\, Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival\, and the Emilia Romagna Festival. They have collaborated with pianists Leon Fleisher and Simone Dinnerstein\; cellists Norman Fischer and Bonnie Hampton\; violinist Ian Swensen\; and the St. Lawrence Quartet and Henschel Quartett. A fervent champion of 20th- and 21st-century repertoire\, the Telegraph Quartet has premiered works by Osvaldo Golijov\, John Harbison\, Robert Sirota\, and Richard Festinger.\n\nIn 2023\, the Telegraph Quartet released *20th Century Vantage Points: Divergent Paths*\, the first in a trilogy of recordings on Azica Records exploring the string quartets of the first half of the 20th century – an era of music that the group has felt especially called to perform since its formation. *Divergent Paths* features two works that (to the best of the quartet’s knowledge) have never been recorded on the same album before: Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major and Arnold Schoenberg’s String Quartet no. 1 in D minor\, op. 7. DESCRIPTION:Over the last thirty-five years\, Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee Steven Page has established himself as one of the most recognizable and enduring voices in music. The release of his latest album\, Excelsior\, shows that he has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. \n\nAs a co-founder\, vocalist and songwriter for Barenaked Ladies\, Steven sang and wrote classics like “Brian Wilson\,” “If I Had A Million Dollars\,” “What A Good Boy\,” “It’s All Been Done” and many more. With the band\, he sold over 15 Million albums and scored multiple Junos\, Billboard Music Awards\, SOCAN awards\, Gemini Awards and two Grammy nominations. After leaving the band in 2009\, Steven embarked on a solo career that has produced five solo albums\, including 2022’s Excelsior\, and has seen him tour worldwide\, from folk festivals to cabarets and theatres\, all the way to packed arenas on a string of dates opening for rock legends The Who.\n​\nSteven performs in many configurations\, but\, since 2016\, has been playing most often with his pals in The Steven Page Trio\, Craig Northey of Vancouver legends Odds on guitar\, and Kevin Fox on cello. With SP3\, Steven has performed arrangements of some of his best-loved songs from his long career with symphony orchestras including the Vancouver and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestras. \n\nSteven is a frequent collaborator with Toronto’s eclectic Art of Time Ensemble\, is a member of power-pop quartet\, The Trans-Canada Highwaymen\, has a Stratford commissioned musical in the works\, and continues to work in film\, television and other media.
