SUMMARY:Exhibition:Comics Beyond Sight
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women\, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. Through three distinct exhibit sections\, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.\n\nWhile enjoying the exhibit\, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. DESCRIPTION:Visit the Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room to see historical materials that illustrate women’s changing relationship with food\, cooking\, and technology during the heady decade of the 1920s\, sandwiched between WWI and the Great Depression. This exhibit features materials from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive\, as well as select items from the Art\, Architecture\, and Engineering Special Collections and the Transportation History Collection.\n\nAs America rang in a new decade in the 1920s\, cookbook authors and appliance manufacturers stood ready to offer the newly emancipated and forward-thinking American woman a vision for her future\, a vision that would be scientifically  grounded\, speedy enough to make time for leisure as well as housework\, and guaranteed to bring fun to that most humdrum of chores: planning and preparing meals for a family three times a day\, 365 days a year.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Special Exhibition | Ancient Abstractions: Roman Visual Trends Beyond Naturalism
DESCRIPTION:The lifelike naturalistic bodies of Greek and Roman sculpture have been a source of wonder since the Renaissance. Indeed\, the Italian Renaissance artist Vasari identified the ancient world as the time “when sculpture rose to its greatest height.” But close likenesses of the natural world are not the only visual products of the ancient past. This exhibition traces alternative visual trends in the ancient Roman world that today would be considered examples of abstraction. It focuses on monuments and motifs long pushed to the margins of our accounts of ancient art. Oversize arrangements of interlocking shapes pulsate in bold block colors from tombs\, temples\, and homes\; stylized animals flicker into view\, only to collapse once more into bright geometric arrangements\; and artists adopt experimental shorthands for the depiction of space across media. Anticipating recent interests in color and form\, the visual trends of antiquity emerge as far more varied than has long been told.\n\n*Ancient Abstractions is on view from November 5\, 2026\, through February 28\, 2027\, during regular museum hours (Tuesday–Friday\, 10:00 AM–4:00 PM\, and Saturday–Sunday\, 11:00 AM–4:00 PM\; closed Mondays and university holidays.*

DESCRIPTION:An Ark family tradition!\nGemily (Gemini + Emily) is the folk music trio comprised of Laz and San Slomovits\, and San's daughter\, Emily. Laz and San\, as the highly popular family music duo\, Gemini\, have been performing throughout Michigan and the United States since 1973. Emily first began joining them on stage when she was just eight years old\, and increasingly since graduating from college in 2016. All three are versatile instrumentalists and excellent singers. Between them they play over a dozen instruments including guitars\, violins\, ukulele\, mandolin\, pennywhistle\, and a variety of folk flutes and hand percussion instruments. They’ve played an annual family concert for Ark audiences on the Sunday after Thanksgiving every year since 1994 to benefit Mott Children’s Hospital\, where Emily was born. \nSan and Laz's recordings have won numerous awards from\, among others\, the American Library Association\, Parents' Choice Magazine\, National Parenting Publications\, the Wolf Trap Institute\, Early Childhood News and ASCAP. Emily\, who studied classical violin for over a decade\, is an excellent violinist in a variety of styles including classical\, jazz and folk. Gemily's concerts feature a wide range of traditional and contemporary folk\, jazz and classical music. Audiences thrill to their musicianship\, warmth\, humor and ease on stage.
