His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons, these paintings, along with his later nonconformist work, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars, the 1917 revolution, and political terror, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable, neglected, and marginalized people: children, the elderly, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie, typically used to hang and bind other material, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell, to slow down, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist, designer, and educator who works across sculpture, installation, sound, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry, exploring themes of labor, precarity, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS\/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology, Science Gallery Detroit, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia, New Media Caucus (NMC), WaveFarm, The Boulder Public Library, The Hyde Park Art Center, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI), International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA), among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website \/ Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image \/ object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist\u2019s interest in embodied experience of space, archival and site responsiveness, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist \/ educator \/ curator currently based in Detroit, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects, he reimagines, and explores within frameworks such as language, the passage of time, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal, transformative, and emotive states through materiality, process, and placement, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer\u2019s encounters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lecturer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. He has been awarded numerous artist residencies including Anderson Ranch Arts Center, I-Park, KHN Center for the Arts, Prairie Ronde, Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program, and Rockland Woods. Today, the Z Facility at Sandia National Laboratories \u2013 the most powerful pulsed power driver ever constructed \u2013 is used to study material responses at extreme pressures, to produce very intense radiation environments and to drive fusion fuels to thermonuclear conditions. We are embarking on an effort to further increase the impact of Z through several targeted upgrades, including doubling the energy delivered to experiments, referred to collectively as the ZX Initiative (Z eXtended Capability Initiative). Through these upgrades we intend to demonstrate robust alpha heating in our fusion experiments, potentially achieving Mega-Joule-class yields. In our radiation experiments we anticipate creating the most intense pure x-ray sources available. Finally, we expect to be able to study the equations of state for mm-scale samples at record pressures. In this talk we will review the science currently being studied on Z and discuss the physics aims of the ZX Initiative. We will then describe the specific pulsed power and subsystem upgrades that enable ZX performance, and discuss work already occurring today to make that happen.\n\nSNL is a multi-mission laboratory managed and operated by NTESS, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International, Inc., for the U.S. DOE\u2019s NNSA under Contract No. DE-NA0003525.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \n\nDave Ampleford is currently leading the ZX Project Planning and Integration efforts at Sandia National Laboratory (SNL). Prior to that he was leading SNL\u2019s Inertial Confinement Fusion science research. He is an experimental plasma physicist who has researched pulsed power driven radiation sources and Inertial Confinement Fusion on the Z Pulsed Power Facility. Taking my recent article \"The Making of Online Kurdistan,\" co-authored with Bar\u0131\u015f \u00d6ktem, as its empirical center, the talk asks how Kurdish Generation Z constructs national belonging through digital platforms \u2014 building a transnational field of community through hashtags, online seminars, and digitally organized movements, even as this same infrastructure exposes Kurdish youth to surveillance and repression across borders. I situate this case within a longer arc of my work on Kurdish politics and within a decolonial reading of Kurdish studies more broadly. Rather than offering a general theory of sovereignty, the talk uses the Kurdish case to think through a live and unresolved question in the study of stateless nations: what forms can political authority, legitimacy, and collective imagination take when territorial statehood is foreclosed, and what is gained and lost when that struggle moves online.\n\nMashuq Kurt is Associate Professor of Sociology in the Department of Law and Criminology at Royal Holloway, University of London. His work sits at the intersection of Middle Eastern studies and the sociology of migration and diaspora, examining how Kurds and other marginalised communities construct political authority and belonging outside the institutions of the nation-state. He is the author of *Kurdish Hizbullah in Turkey: Islamism, Violence and the State* (Pluto Press, 2017), co-editor of the *South Atlantic Quarterly Special Issue: Decolonizing Kurdish Studies *(2024) and the *Contemporary Islam Special Issue: Islam, Critique and the Canon* (2024), and has published in journals including *Current Anthropology*, *Journal of Middle East Women's Studies*, and *Social Research: An International Quarterly*. His recent article \"The Making of Online Kurdistan\" (*Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies*, 2026), co-authored with Bar\u0131\u015f \u00d6ktem, examines how Kurdish Generation Z constructs national belonging through digital platforms. He was a Marie Curie Global Fellow at the London School of Economics and Yale University, has held visiting positions at Stanford and Sciences Po CERI. Her creative practice utilizes expanded media to create community-based feminist, anti-racist, and transformative justice memory projects and collective futures with people from Central America, its diasporas, and beyond.\n\nShe serves as the Director of AMA y No Olvida, Memory Museum Against Impunity, a community memory transmedia initiative created in collaboration with the Association Mother of April (AMA), an organization of families of victims of state violence in Nicaragua.\n\nHer artworks have been exhibited in international spaces such as the Resistance Biennial, Guatemala; the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MADC), Costa Rica; Casa Am\u00e9rica and the Museum and Vanguard Art Center Neomud\u00e9jar, Spain; Le Commun Contemporary Art Building, Geneva; and the Games and New Media Summit at Tribeca Film Festival.\n\nShe is currently an Assistant Professor of Art and Design at the University of Michigan. www.emiliayang.org\n\nKiyoteru Tsutsui\nFormer DHRC Director (2016-2020)\nProfessor of Sociology\nStanford University\n\nKiyoteru Tsutsui is the Henri H. and Tomoye Takahashi Professor and Senior Fellow in Japanese Studies at Shorenstein APARC, the Director of APARC and the Japan Program at APARC, a senior fellow of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, and Professor of Sociology, all at Stanford University.\n\nPrior to his appointment at Stanford in July 2020, Tsutsui was Professor of Sociology, Director of the Center for Japanese Studies, and Director of the Donia Human Rights Center at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.\n\nTsutsui\u2019s research interests lie in political\/comparative sociology, social movements, globalization, human rights, and Japanese society. More specifically, he has conducted (1) cross-national quantitative analyses on how human rights ideas and instruments have expanded globally and impacted local politics and (2) qualitative case studies of the impact of global human rights on Japanese politics. His current projects examine (a) changing conceptions of nationhood and minority rights in national constitutions and in practice, (b) populism and the future of democracy, (c) experimental surveys on public understanding about human rights, (d) campus policies and practices around human rights, (e) global expansion of corporate social responsibility and its impact on corporate behavior, and (f) Japan\u2019s public diplomacy and perceptions about Japan in the world.\n\nHis research on the globalization of human rights and its impact on local politics has appeared in American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, Social Forces, Social Problems, Journal of Peace Research, Journal of Conflict Resolution, and other social science journals. He has been a recipient of National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, National Science Foundation grants, the SSRC\/CGP Abe Fellowship, Stanford Japan Studies Postdoctoral Fellowship, and other grants as well as awards from American Sociological Association sections on Global and Transnational Sociology (2010, 2013, 2019), Human Rights (2017, 2019), Asia and Asian America (2018, 2019), Collective Behavior and Social Movements (2018), and Political Sociology (2019).\n\nTsutsui received his bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees from Kyoto University and earned an additional master\u2019s degree and PhD from Stanford\u2019s Department of Sociology in 2002.\n\nSteven Ratner\nFormer DHRC Director (2020-2026)\nBruno Simma Collegiate Professor\nMichigan Law\n\nSteven R. Ratner is the Bruno Simma Collegiate Professor of Law at the University of Michigan and former Director of the Donia Human Rights Center (2020-2026). He teaches and writes in the field of public international law on a range of issues, including war and peace, human rights, foreign investment, the United Nations (UN), territorial and ethnic-based disputes, and business and human rights. He is also interested in the intersection of international law and political philosophy and other theoretical issues. He has served on three high-level United Nations panels investigating human rights violations -- in Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and Ethiopia.\n\nAmb. Susan D. Page\nDirector, Weiser Diplomacy Center;\nProfessor of Practice,\nFord School & Michigan Law\n\nAmbassador Susan D. Page is a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience in international relations, conflict resolution, and human rights advocacy. She is an elected member of the American Academy of Diplomacy, an Elected Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration, a member of the Association of Black American Ambassadors, and serves on various boards, including The Carter Center Board of Trustees, the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area, Road Scholar, and Lex Collective (Formerly Global Diligence Alliance).\n\nAmbassador Page had a distinguished diplomatic career, including serving as the first U.S. Ambassador to the newly independent Republic of South Sudan and as the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Haiti. Through it, we explore the religious politics of early modern global Catholicism, French-Ottoman diplomacy, and the historiographic benefits of focusing attention on the lives of particular individuals.\n\nDaniel Ohanian is a historian of Armenians in the early modern Ottoman Empire. He is currently working on a cultural history of Catholic-Armenian contact in the c. 1700 Mediterranean and on the eighteenth-century travelogue of a merchant-turned-priest named Hovhannes Tovmajanian. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them, name potential barriers to intervention, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. In this talk, Eric Hemenway will explore the complexity of Indian country during the time, the struggles of Michigan\u2019s Anishnaabek and ask the question \u201cwhy fight for the United States?\u201d\n\nEric Hemenway is an Anishnaabe\/Odawa from Cross Village, Michigan. His work centers on bringing Anishnaabe\/Odawa history to the public and advancing Anishnaabek rights. For 20 years Eric worked for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians Archives. While at LTBB, Eric worked on exhibits, signage, curriculum, public programs, litigation and extensive work under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. Eric\u2019s partners include the National Park Service, the State of Michigan, Harvard University, Yale University, and numerous local schools in Northern Michigan. Eric received his honorary doctorate from Oakland University and has received numerous awards for his work on integrating indigenous history into public spaces. He is currently the humanities manager for the School of Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan. In this role, Eric looks to include more humanities into the environmental justice movement through sharing the history of Michigan\u2019s first people, the Anishnaabek.\n\nThis lecture is in conjunction with the exhibition \u201cFill the Ranks\u201d: the University of Michigan and the Civil War, on display at the Frankel Detroit Observatory September 24, 2026-July 2, 2027.
