This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing, haptics, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals.

Emily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!), and prior to that, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability.

Nick Sousanis (SFSU), the lead creative organizer of the exhibit, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.

View the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday, October 2nd, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.
Celebrate the centennial of the iconic 1926 “Down in Ann Arbor Town” map by exploring the colorful history, campus traditions, and detailed artistry that made it possible. Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. Through three distinct exhibit sections, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.

While enjoying the exhibit, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. Return your scavenger hunt at the desk for a small prize, while supplies last.

Join the curators — Ava Pustulka (’28) and Anna Rohl, map curator at Clark Library — for a presentation on September 24 (https://myumi.ch/X8y3r), where they will share the research that went into creating the exhibit.",

This exhibit features materials from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive, as well as select items from the Art, Architecture, and Engineering Special Collections and the Transportation History Collection.

As America rang in a new decade in the 1920s, cookbook authors and appliance manufacturers stood ready to offer the newly emancipated and forward-thinking American woman a vision for her future, a vision that would be scientifically grounded, speedy enough to make time for leisure as well as housework, and guaranteed to bring fun to that most humdrum of chores: planning and preparing meals for a family three times a day, 365 days a year.
The field of medieval environmental history has grown immensely from its inception 30 years ago. While scholars of the classical past and modern period registered environmental changes made by their powerful states a little earlier, the topic caught on more slowly in the medieval field, where small and ineffective states posed different methodological challenges. It took different ways of studying nature to see how environments changed in Europe and the Mediterranean during the millennium between 500 and 1500 CE. Scholars of the medieval environment of necessity adopted an acrobatic approach to the past, bringing together the usual tools of the historian -- close textual analysis – with archaeology, archaeobotany, and scientific studies of pollen distribution, weather patterns, and the contents of middens. Today, the field of medieval environmental history represents one of the most methodologically diverse and inventive among any branch of history.

This one-day conference, with an opening session on the previous afternoon, will appraise the major developments and turning points of the last 30 years in medieval environmental history with papers from some of the leading scholars in the field. Since one of the pioneers in medieval environmental history, Paolo Squatriti, has been on the faculty of the U of M for 25 years, the conference will take cues from his seminal works and methodological turns. Panels will offer papers within the following themes: 1. History in the mundane 2. Historical agency and unexpected actors 3. The Mediterranean as a place of hybridity 4. Materiality and the past 5. Science in the service of history.

Featuring:
Jon Arnold (University of Tulsa)
Henrik Dey (Hunter College)
Hussein Fancy (Yale University)
Benjamin Graham (University of Memphis)
Richard Hoffman (York University)
Alyssa Kotva (The Ohio State University)
Jamie Kreiner (University of California, Los Angeles)
Stephanie Leitzel (Cornell University)

From September 2025 through December 2026, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Southeast Michigan-based, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20); and Sometimes Space, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions, performances, and events, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project, Byrne, Clegg, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:

Phase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)
Phase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)
Phase 3 (September 11 - December 11) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)
Phase 3

Curated by Sometimes Space: Abhishek Narula (entry pillar)
Curated by CYNK Studios: Nathan Byrne (courtyard pillar)

Artist Statements/Bios

Abhishek Narula, Compressions
Compressions is an installation comprised of 416 industrial-grade zip ties, cinched around the entry pillar of the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie, typically used to hang and bind other material, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell, to slow down, and to simply see the pillar.

Abhishek Narula is an artist, designer, and educator who works across sculpture, installation, sound, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry, exploring themes of labor, precarity, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology, Science Gallery Detroit, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia, New Media Caucus (NMC), WaveFarm, The Boulder Public Library, The Hyde Park Art Center, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI), International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA), among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram

Nathan Byrne, Equally To Be Loved
Equally To Be Loved is an image / object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist’s interest in embodied experience of space, archival and site responsiveness, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.

Nathan Byrne is an artist / educator / curator currently based in Detroit, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects, he reimagines, and explores within frameworks such as language, the passage of time, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal, transformative, and emotive states through materiality, process, and placement, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer’s encounters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lecturer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. He has been awarded numerous artist residencies including Anderson Ranch Arts Center, I-Park, KHN Center for the Arts, Prairie Ronde, Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program, and Rockland Woods.

Curated by Srimoyee Mitra

Stamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture, UCLA.

This exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive, both personal and public, as a site of disturbance; and migration as a lived experience of refuge, refusal, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory, inheritance, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory, movement, and belonging.

Presented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and the U-M Library.
“humble folk-pop brilliance” –Rolling Stone

As a child, if you’re lucky, summer afternoons stretch out like a yawn, pool waves are as warm and engulfing as a blanket, the safety of your mother’s arms feels endless. On her new album, Neon Summer Skin, Bedouine, the project of Azniv Korkejian, explores this feeling of safety long before one can fully understand the concept. Written with vivid, honest and intimate imagery after visiting her family in Saudi Arabia, it tells the story of family and upbringing, and mourns the end of her childhood. There is a singular resonance and newfound heft in this music previously unheard in Bedouine’s discography.

Bedouine is known for making gentle, lilting folk songs that build fingerpicked guitar melodies into tsunamis of emotion. Her masterful songwriting and timeless melodies have earned her praise from publications like Pitchfork, who said her music “boasts a surreal calm and lived in glow,” and Rolling Stone, who lauded her “humble folk-pop brilliance,” plus an NPR Tiny Desk Concert, and tours with the likes of Fleet Foxes and Father John Misty.

As personal as her songs have been, they’ve often built upon universal experiences. The writing on Neon Summer Skin, however, is full of specific memories: a neon swim suit, beads of water dripping down tangled hair, the blood of a lamb, often sacrificed at Syrian weddings, oozing across the pavement. “It was the first time I had the inclination to write a record about one main subject which gave me a clarity and motivation I hadn't quite had before.”

Bedouine started working on the record after a trip to Saudi Arabia to visit her parents. She correctly assumed it would be her last one there because her family was retiring to Armenia. “For my 20s and much of my 30s, I couldn’t sit still,” she says. “I would pack my car and move to a new place. I was so curious about my own independence that it just didn't occur to me for the longest time to mourn the past. But after that trip, I came home and was so devastated. I couldn't place the feeling immediately, but as I started writing, I realized I was processing that I wasn’t ready to stop being somebody’s kid.

She co-produced most of the songs with her longtime collaborator, Gus Seyffert, and wrote with the sweet pop melodies of Todd Rundgren, Karen Carpenter, and Carole King in mind. She also worked on a couple of tracks with producer Jonathan Rado with Michael and Brian D’Addario of the Lemon Twigs. “It was important to me to try to approach some of the production of this record a little differently, just to try something new,” she says. The result is a fuller, more playful sound, at times grand and orchestral, shimmery and surreal, inflected with bits of psychedelia, bossa nova, and jazz.",
