SUMMARY:Exhibition:Camille Ann Brewer\, MFA\, MLIS
DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan.  Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.  \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space.  In patterns that support the artwork’s theme\, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.

DESCRIPTION:Experience a curated experience of the imaginary\, featuring a lightly sci-fi\, magnificent work of art--the LRCCS Fortune and Longevity Dragon\, a 25-ft long\, Asian-inspired full-body dragon sculpture for use in the traditional \"dragon dance\"  crafted by renowned international artist Zhen Guo with U-M faculty arts lecturer Raymond Wetzel\, artist Jeri Rosenberg\, students\,  and volunteers   The exhibition highlights the story of the dragon's fabrication and its impact on community..  An iconic symbol of inclusivity\, strength\, and courage\, this newly imagined U-M dragon\, with its futuristic flair\, technological creativity and sustainable materials\, invites students and the entire community to re-envision a classic cultural symbol for contemporary times.\n\nPresented by the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies. Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women\, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. Through three distinct exhibit sections\, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.\n\nWhile enjoying the exhibit\, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. DESCRIPTION:Lila Kadaj received her MFA from Wayne State University. Her work has been shown at numerous institutions\, including the Detroit Institute of Arts\, the Cranbrook Art Museum\, and the Arab American National Museum.  She spent nearly 27 years teaching art at Detroit Public schools.\n\nArtist statement: “When looking at a beautiful flower.  It’s just itself.  Just there......no .....it does not proclaim its purpose for blooming is to make people happy. It just is. Like standing in front of an easel and painting........just is.......no matter......what proclamations may be concluded to sway the viewer. Same thing goes for fine art.  It’s not about I am a woman....it’s not about I am a first generation Arab American.....it’s not about being a child of trauma....it’s not about a member of my family being gunned down on the street....it’s about being born a painter.....standing in front of my easel and working to create a \"Piece of Fine Art\". Not standing on some soap box and expecting my words to somehow qualify my painting. It’s the painting\, drawing or sculpture that must speak on its own.......on how the artist......via the intellect and muse uses the elements to create something distinct and first rate.   It can be quiet or loud. I see so much very weak work uplifted not for its quality but because it’s in fashion.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Black Birth Joy
DESCRIPTION:Black Birth Joy by Tiana Lashae documents birth as a deeply personal story of connection\, courage\, tenderness\, and joy. The photographs and stories in the exhibit challenge mainstream narratives that reduce Black birth to statistics and only amplify Black pregnant women's anxiety and hesitancy about navigating the maternal health care system. Instead\, the exhibit offers evidence of joy\, reminders of possibility\, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard\, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers\, babies\, partners\, families\, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care\, respectful treatment\, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity\, dignity\, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae\, a doula and birth/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine\, an international publication. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Like the Flowing River
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tomoyuki Ueno creates individual works and installations where nature appears to be in an endless conversation with form\, one echoing the other\, a repetition. They are a combination of certainty and ephemerality\, as if hinged between living and loss. The specificity of Ueno’s sculptural works reads like poetry. Ueno’s installation offers visitors time away\, for contemplation\, to draw inward\, to come inside\, to ask the question\, “How are art and the everyday intertwined?” Honoring the Buddhist philosophy of impermanence\, one becomes a continuation of the other. The artist intends the space to offer a restorative and meditative experience.\n\nThis exhibition includes artworks created from natural materials foraged by the artist while in artist residency in Ann Arbor.\n\n*The title refers to the opening line of Hōjōki\, written by 13th-century Japanese Buddhist monk Kamo no Chōmei: \"The flow of the river is ceaseless\, and the water is never the same…\"*

The BA Senior Studio Exhibition offers these students the opportunity to build on the particular characteristics of the BA degree\, and focus on creating and exhibiting a culminating\, self-directed project. Students work independently or collaboratively to define a project plan with goals\, benchmarks\, and a timeline. \n\nIn the BA Senior Studio Exhibition\, students and instructors work collaboratively to produce a fully self-directed show from start to finish. DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | China’s Economic Slowdown: A Firm-Level Perspective

Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/DW8j6\n\nThis talk develops a new representative firm-level dataset for Chinese manufacturing from 1998 to 2019 by combining tax\, registry\, and inspection records and correcting for sampling biases in existing administrative data. Using a CES production framework with firm-specific distortions\, the talk introduces a novel decomposition of aggregate TFP growth into efficient growth and changes in misallocation. The analysis documents a sharp slowdown in Chinese manufacturing productivity growth after 2010\, driven both by weaker incumbent-firm productivity growth and by a diminished contribution from firm turnover and reallocation.  \n\nLoren Brandt is a professor of economics at the University of Toronto specializing in the Chinese economy.  He has published widely on the Chinese economy in leading economic journals including the *American Economic Review*\, *the Quarterly Journal of Economics*\, *Review of Economic Studies*\, *Econometrica and the Journal of Political Economy*\, and been involved in extensive household and enterprise survey work in both China and Vietnam. With Thomas Rawski\, he completed *Policy\, Regulation\, and Innovation in China’s Electricity and Telecom Industries* (Cambridge University Press\, 2019)\, an interdisciplinary effort analyzing the effect of government policy on the power and telecom sectors in China. He was also co-editor and major contributor to *China’s Great Economic Transformation* (Cambridge University Press\, 2008)\, which provides an integrated analysis of China’s unexpected economic boom of the past three decades.  His current research focuses on issues of entrepreneurship and firm dynamics\, industrial policy and innovation\, and economic growth and structural change.

Pilgrims at the Bedside examines the sacred roots of modern medicine and how hospitality\, ritual\, and meaning can enrich the experience of both patients and caregivers.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nMargaret Wardlaw is a pediatrician and sleep medicine physician\, educator\, and a prize-winning essayist. She received her MD and PhD in the Medical Humanities from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Her research interests include religion\, spirituality\, childbirth\, disability studies\, medicine as religious practice\, sleep medicine\, and pediatric palliative medicine. In addition to presenting nationally and internationally\, her writing has appeared in Guernica\, Plough\, Feminist Approaches to Bioethics\, Religion and Medicine\, The Persisting Osler\, and The American Journal of Bioethics. Her essay\, \"Monsters\,\" which received a Pushcart Prize\, is the winner of the grand prize in the National Science Foundation's \"Dangerous Creations\" project for the bicentennial of Frankenstein.

DESCRIPTION:Patterson Hood is an acclaimed singer-songwriter\, guitarist\, and co-founder\nof the Southern rock band Drive-By Truckers. Born in Muscle Shoals\,\nAlabama\, Hood grew up immersed in the region’s rich musical heritage\, with his father\, David Hood\, being a renowned session bassist for the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. Drawing inspiration from storytelling\ntraditions and a passion for rock\, country\, and soul\, Hood’s music often explores themes of Southern identity\, social justice\, and personal\nintrospection. While best known as frontman\, singer\, songwriter\, and guitar\nplayer for Drive-By Truckers\, he is also a writer of essays\, columns\, and\nshort stories as well as a solo performer and producer.\n\nSince forming Drive-By Truckers in 1996 with Mike Cooley\, Hood has been\na driving force behind the band’s narrative-driven sound\, blending gritty\,\nguitar-heavy arrangements with evocative lyrics. Albums like Southern\nRock Opera (2001) and The Dirty South (2004) have solidified their\nreputation as one of the most influential Southern rock bands of their\ngeneration.\n\nBeyond his work with the Truckers\, Hood has released solo albums\nincluding Killers and Stars (2004) and Heat Lightning Rumbles in the\nDistance (2012)\, showcasing his versatility as a songwriter. His latest solo\nalbum\, Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams\, produced by Chris Funk (The Decemberists) and released via ATO Records in February 2025\, earned widespread critical acclaim\, including 9/10 from Uncut and 8/10 from Mojo. Pitchfork called it Hood’s “most adventurous and surprising\, and his best” solo record\, while Forbes praised it as “one of Hood’s most focused studio efforts.”\n\nWhether fronting the Truckers or performing solo\, Hood remains a vital\nforce in contemporary Americana and Southern rock\, celebrated for turning\nlife’s raw realities into compelling\, soul-stirring art.
