Celebrate the centennial of the iconic 1926 “Down in Ann Arbor Town” map by exploring the colorful history, campus traditions, and detailed artistry that made it possible. Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. Through three distinct exhibit sections, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.

While enjoying the exhibit, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. Return your scavenger hunt at the desk for a small prize, while supplies last.

Join the curators — Ava Pustulka (’28) and Anna Rohl, map curator at Clark Library — for a presentation on September 24 (https://myumi.ch/X8y3r), where they will share the research that went into creating the exhibit.
Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter, theater stage designer, teacher, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons, these paintings, along with his later nonconformist work, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.

Having witnessed two world wars, the 1917 revolution, and political terror, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable, neglected, and marginalized people: children, the elderly, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy, dignity, and admiration.

“For my father, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. Art was an expression of freedom, individuality, and personalized creativity, without which it ceased to be art.”
— Galina Lembersky, daughter

Exhibit curated by Yelena Lembersky, granddaughter of Felix Lembersky, and Geneviève Zubrzycki, WCEE Director.

Works on loan from the private collection of Yelena Lembersky.

Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.

If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. Her scholarship and practice address the intersection of civil rights law, technology policy, and institutional accountability, with particular focus on the areas of digital privacy in areas of stigmatized healthcare around reproductive care and gender affirming care. She is admitted to practice in New York and Massachusetts, and is admitted to the Southern District of New York and the Eleventh, Ninth, and Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Her litigation practice has included impact cases on healthcare discrimination, employment discrimination, and LGBTQ civil rights, including work on Kadel v. Folwell, Lange v. Houston County, and Boston Alliance v. HHS. Alejandra’s published legal scholarship includes The Anti-Transgender Medical Expert Industry (Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics, 2022), Extradition in Post-Roe America (CUNY Law Review, 2023), and The Death of Medical Privacy for Trans Patients (forthcoming, Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy, 2026). Her scholarship has been cited in law reviews, amicus briefs, and media coverage of LGBTQ civil rights litigation.

Celeste Trianon is a transfeminine jurist and activist, based out of Montréal (in the traditional lands of the Kanien'keháka) and active all across Canada. Celeste holds a Bachelor of Laws from the Université de Montréal and a Juris Doctor from Osgoode Hall Law School (Toronto). She is currently working with the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund in Toronto, while completing her lawyer licensure process with the Law Society of Ontario. Through Juritrans, the legal clinic she founded prior to starting her first law degree, over a thousand trans people in Québec, Nova Scotia and other provinces have been able to get information and accompaniment in applying for legal name changes. Celeste has created opportunities for 2SLGBTQ+ law students to be involved with their own community through partnerships with various Canadian law schools. She has equally coordinated several judicial interventions defending the rights of trans people, both at trial (notably in A.B. v. Québec Minister of Education) and at the Supreme Court of Canada (namely Hak/EMSB and UR Pride). In her capacity as a content creator, she has built a following of 22,000+ on Instagram, primarily through breaking the news on developments in transgender issues in Canada. Celeste maintains Canada's Anti-Trans Risk Map, a resource extensively used in academia, conferences, and even by trans U.S. citizens seeking to flee their country.

Meet the Moderator:

M. Remi Yergeau is a Canada Research Chair in Critical Disability Studies and Communication and an associate professor of Communication and Media Studies at Carleton University. They also direct the Digital Accessible Futures Lab as a part of the DISCO Network. Remi is an autistic academic, and their scholarly interests include rhetoric & writing studies, digital studies, trans and queer rhetorics, disability studies, and theories of mind. Their book, Authoring Autism: On Rhetoric and Neurological Queerness (Duke UP, 2017), is a winner of the 2017 Modern Language Association First Book Prize, the 2019 CCCC Lavender Rhetorics Book Award for Excellence in Queer Scholarship, and the 2019 Rhetoric Society of America Book Award. Along with 13 colleagues from DISCO, Remi is a co-author of Technoskepticism (Stanford UP, 2025).

We want to make our events accessible to all participants.
Understanding how Afro-Europeans came to play leading roles in establishing the African-owned press in colonial Ghana, and why they introduced race as the primary language of political protest in their newspapers requires reaching back to the late fifteenth century when the social world of the transatlantic slave trade first began to take shape. Two features of this social world—interracial sexual relationships between African women and European men and the concomitant growth of an Afro-European population that remained embedded in African society—were key drivers of the process of racialization unleashed by the transatlantic slave trade. This process would evolve over the course of four centuries in ways that gave Afro-European men the social positionality, financial resources, and political impetus to be the first founders of African-owned newspapers in colonial Ghana. Their newspapers reveal a late-nineteenth-century West African epistemology of blackness that stretched beyond its elite (primarily) Afro-European origins as literacy rates grew, newspaper publishing expanded, and the language of race became a politically consequential medium in the twentieth century that enabled dissent and shaped how Africans in the colony’s growing public sphere debated and fought for political futures defined not by their colonizers, but by themselves.

Carina Ray is a scholar of race and sexuality; comparative colonialisms and nationalisms; migration and maritime history; print cultures; bodily aesthetics, and the relationship between race, ethnicity, and political power. Ray’s research is primarily focused on Ghana and its diasporas. She is the author of Crossing the Color Line: Race, Sex, and the Contested Politics of Colonialism in Ghana, winner of the American Historical Association's 2016 Wesley-Logan Book Prize and the African Studies Association's 2017 Aidoo-Snyder Book Prize. Her articles have appeared in Gender and History, PMLA, The Journal of West African History, and The American Historical Review, among others. She is series co-editor of New African Histories (Ohio University Press) with Jacob Dlamini and Derek Peterson, and African Identities: Past and Present (Cambridge University Press) with Toyin Falola. Ray previously served as series editor of Ohio Short Histories of Africa (Ohio University Press) with Dan Magaziner, Michelle Moyd, and Moses Ochunu; as editor of Ghana Studies; and as a member of the Board of Editors for The American Historical Review.

This event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.",
